New Coolpad phone gets TENAA certified, packs mid-range specs but old OS

A new Coolpad phone with the model number 1873-A0 was certified on TENAA a few days ago. The phone has a modern design and specs that put it in the mid-range category but it’s running an older version of Android that may be a deal breaker for a lot of people.

The Coolpad 1873-A0 has a large 6.28-inch screen with a 2246 x 1080 resolution. The resolution means it has a notch at the upper part of the display just like a lot of phones released this year.

[envira-gallery id=”226798″]

It is powered by a 1.5GHz octa-core processor which is probably an old chipset from MediaTek or Qualcomm. The chipset is paired with 4GB of RAM and 32GB/64GB/128GB of expandable storage.

The Coolpad 1873-A0 has dual rear cameras but TENAA only mentions one and it is a 16MP sensor. Besides the vertically arranged sensors, there is also a fingerprint scanner. A 13MP camera sits in front for selfies.

Coolpad has also included a 3900mAh battery to go along with the large display. What is sad is that the phone runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat which is old for a phone that may be launching at the end of 2018 or the beginning of 2019.

Nubia Red Magic Mars will be available globally early 2019

Nubia recently launched a new gaming phone dubbed Red Magic Mars in China with a pretty impressive price tag coupled with the hardware tailored to meet the expectations of gaming enthusiasts. The design of the Nubia Red Magic Mars is inspired by Mars, the God of War and is promoted as the latest weapon in mobile gaming. The device has since gone on sale in China but there has been no word on the global availability. Well, until now. Nubia has revealed that the Red Magic Mars will be available for the global market in the early part of 2019. The global availability is likely going to be focused on Europe but we do hope it spreads into other markets.Nubia Red Magic Mars

The Nubia Red Magic Mars is the second flagship gaming phone that the company is releasing and honestly, it is not very much different from the first mode – the Red Magic. The Mars, in fact, builds on all that was great about the first Red
Magic phone but with some awesome new features and fixes. Top of the pack is a Snapdragon 845 processor with the Adreno 616 GPU as well as a special nano-scale liquid cooling system. The new type of system will help the device to remain cool even while performing CPU/GPU intensive tasks. This will, in turn, boost the phone’s performance. You get a 3,800mAh battery onboard as well as the Android 9.0 Pie operating system out of the box.Nubia Red Magic Mars

On the camera end, the Red Magic Mars packs a single camera shooter of 16 megapixels with f/1.8 aperture. On the front, the device carries an 8-megapixel selfie shooter. The device also features a 4D shock haptic feedback along with two touch-sensitive shoulder buttons. Nubia has added stereo speakers for DTS 7.1 audio but removed the 3.5mm audio jack.Nubia Red Magic Mars

The company wasn’t specific with the global release date but we expect the device to drop in the first quarter of 2019. Whenever it does drop, it will be available in three different colors of Meteorite Black, Flame Red and camouflage edition. All the color variants are available with RGB LED strip on the rear along with impressive decals. The Red Magic Mars gaming rig will also be available in 6GB RAM, 8GB RAM and 10GB RAM variants.

Nokia 8.1 vs Meizu 16 vs Huawei Nova 3: Specs Comparison

Nokia 8.1 is the international version of the Nokia X7 and it was launched in the global market a few days ago. In order to establish if HMD Global realized another best-buy like its predecessor Nokia 7 Plus, it is time to compare it with its actual competitors. For this comparison, we chose Meizu 16 and Huawei Nova 3 as they are among the best alternatives in the same price range of the Nokia 8.1.

Design

Huawei managed to release devices with stunning designs in the last year. One of them is Huawei Nova 3, a high-end smartphone which comes with a glossy back made of glass available in gradient colors. Its display has a big notch in the middle, but thanks to it there are very narrow bezels. On the other hand, Meizu 16 has the most original design, it has a high screen-to-body ratio even though it does not feature a notch, as well as an in-display fingerprint reader.

Display

The display of Meizu 16 is the one I like more because, besides integrating an in-display fingerprint reader, it is a Super AMOLED panel with brilliant colors and deep blacks. Nokia 8.1 and Huawei Nova 3 both come with an IPS notched panel and a Full HD+ resolution, but I would prefer Huawei Nova 3 because of its narrower bezels and its bigger size. Even though they come with wide viewing angles and a pretty high brightness, they are just average panels.

Specs & Software

The Snapdragon 845 and the Kirin 980 are currently the best chipsets available in the Android market. Sadly, Huawei Nova 3 still has the Kirin 970, while Nokia 8.1 has the upper-midrange SoC Snapdragon 710. So Meizu 16 is the most performing handset with its Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 which is paired with up to 8 GB of RAM in the most expensive variant. But if you go for it, you will have to say goodbye to the micro SD slot. Android One is on board of the Nokia 8.1 and it it is based on Android Pie, while Huawei Nova 3 and Meizu 16 come with EMUI and Flyme OS based on Android Oreo.

Camera

Cameras are the strongest point of Nokia handsets, and it is the same for the new Nokia 8.1. But there is a very marginal difference between the camera performances of these three handsets. I would personally prefer Meizu 16 because of its accurate autofocus and OIS which do a really nice job with photos sharpness. But Nokia 8.1 is able to provide outstanding performance as well, especially in the most disadvantageous scenarios. Huawei Nova 3 is definitely the best when it comes to selfies because of its dual front camera.

Battery

Huawei Nova 3 provides an impressive battery life with a 30-40 percent of remaining charge even after a long day of use. Nokia 8.1 can last a single day too, but Huawei Nova 3 results slightly better in many scenarios. Meizu 16 has definitely a too small battery to compete with its opponents, so it loses the battle. But on the other hand, it is able to charge very fastly thanks to its proprietary mCharge technology.

Price

Nokia 8.1 debuted in Europe with a €400 price tag, Meizu 16 costs €410 in its base variant and Huawei Nova 3 can be purchased for about €400 as well. With the actual prices, I would go for the Nokia 8.1 because of its good battery and very nice cameras. I would have chosen the Meizu 16 if it had a bigger battery.

Geekbench listing reveals Huawei P Smart 2019 will run Android Pie

A few weeks ago, news of a new phone called the Huawei P Smart (2019) surfaced on the web and it revealed the phone was set to arrive in Europe in January 2019. The phone has now been spotted on Geekbench.

The Huawei P Smart (2019) will succeed the Huawei P Smart a.k.a P Smart 2018 that was released at the beginning of the year but it isn’t a successor to the P Smart+ a.k.a Nova 3i released in August 2018.

Huawei P Smart 2019 Geekbench

The FCC listing of the phone already revealed the Huawei P Smart (2019)’s model number as POT-LX3. The version that appeared on Geekbench is another variant with model number POT-XL1.

According to the Geekbench result, the phone runs Android 9 Pie and has 3GB of RAM. It is powered by an octa-core processor with a base frequency of 1.71GHz. An early leak already revealed the chipset is the Kirin 710, the same chipset in the Huawei P Smart+.

The P Smart 2019 scored 1517 points in the single-core test and 5535 in the multi-core test.

TENAA: Samsung Galaxy A8s packs 8GB RAM, triple cameras, and more

The Samsung Galaxy A8s will be announced on Monday at an event in China. Ahead of the release, the phone’s full specifications have been revealed by China’s communication agency, TENAA, along with some photos.

The Galaxy A8s will come with a 6.39-inch 2340 x 1080 display. Unlike other phones in the A-series, this is not a Super AMOLED display but an LCD panel. However, it is the first phone to come with Samsung’s Infinity-O Display.

The phone will be powered by an octa-core processor with four cores clocked at 2.2GHz and the other four clocked at 1.7GHz. The chipset is said to be the Snapdragon 710 which powers phones like the Mi 8 SE and the Nokia 8.1/X7. The processor is paired with 6GB/ 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage irrespective of the RAM variant you purchase.

[envira-gallery id=”226769″]

On the back of the Galaxy A8s are triple rear cameras just like the Galaxy A7 (2018). The camera arrangement is quite different too. The three cameras – 24MP + 5MP + 10MP – share a single housing and there is an LED flash below the setup. However, the middle camera has a yellow ring around it that seems to be another LED flash but we are not sure. About a centimeter to the left of the cameras is a fingerprint scanner and in front of the phone, nestled within the hole in the screen is a 24MP camera for selfies and video calls.

LG GRAM 17 Notebook launched sporting a huge 17.3-inch display and ultralightweight design

We don’t get to see laptops with a 17-inch display every day due to their bulkiness. Instead, this is steadily turning into the exclusive preserve of desktop PCs. However, LG is out to rock the boat with the launch of the latest Gram laptop. The LG Gram 17 defies the ods to come with some degree of portability, in terms of its weight.LG Gram 17

The LG Gram 17 features a 17.3-inch screen with a resolution of 2560×1600 resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio. The laptop weighs just 1.33kg which is almost similar to those of many 13-inch laptops. Thus, this is a big laptop that could still pass as a portable one. The Gram 17 design includes a dark silver Carbon Magnesium alloy chassis that is only 17.8 mm (0.7 inches) thick. The chassis is notably thinner than most 15-inch notebooks. Specifically, it is thinner than the ASUS ZenBook Pro 15.

Furthermore, the LG Gram pack a quad-core Intel Core i7-8565U (Whiskey Lake-U) processor and LG’s UHD Graphics 620 iGPU fires up the graphics. Th processor is paired with a whopping 16 GB of DDR4-2400 RAM as well as 512 GB SATA SSD. Unlike the vast majority of 17-inch notebooks, the LG Gram 17 does not have a discrete GPU, which will be missed by gamers and performance enthusiasts, but that has helped to keep the weight and power consumption on the low. LG claims the battery can last up to 19.5 hours on a single charge but failed to disclose the battery capacity.LG Gram 17

For connectivity, the LG Gram 17 comes with a 802.11ac Wi-Fi + Bluetooth module, three USB 3.0 Type-A ports, a USB Type-C connector that can be used for charging the laptop. The laptop can also be charged using the dedicated power connector. The device also packs an HDMI output, a microSD slot, and a TRRS jack for headsets. You also get a webcam fitted with an IR sensor for Windows Hello as well as a fingerprint reader, bringing two forms of biometric authentication.LG Gram 17

UMIDIGI One Max Teardown: Showing its big battery and wireless charging capabilities

UMIDIGI, a Chinese smartphone company after offering deals this festive season is again back with new devices. Nonetheless, the China based smartphone company has recently launched its new product dubbed as UMIDIGI One Max. The One Max is all a bang for the buck device, at least that’s what its seems to us by seeing the overhauled specs sheet and the price tag it carries. Now, the company has come up with a teardown video of the device mainly showing-off its massive battery capacity and wireless charging capability.

The video posted over at UMIDIGI official YouTube channel takes us to the inner world of UMIDIDI One Max. It’s a quick teardown video necessarily showing the all hardwares that it boards, and other smartphones with such a price could never even think of having all those perks. Let’s see what all things do the teardown bring to our notice.

The video, not to much surprise, highlights two USP of the UMIDIGI One Max – the massive 4150mAh battery, and 128GB massive storage with LPDDR4X RAM. The 4150mAh battery coupled with the power-efficient Helio P23 SoC should give you 2-3 day normal usage endurance. Also, the One Max support both 18W fast charging and 15W wireless charging, so even if you end up battery-low it’d take only few hours to rejuvenate the battery. The teardown video hasn’t forgotten to flaunt the NFC chip, which is a rarity in most of the budget devices currently in the market.

Then comes the 12MP+5MP dual rear camera sensors capable of taking bokeh shots. The side fingerprint sensor is on top of the power button, a design choice first introduced by Sony and it’s very convenient but not so common on devices. Very interestingly, the inclusion of Type-C port is another marvel of the One Max.

If you’re impressed with the UMIDI One Max, you need to wait a little more to get hold off a unit as it’ll be up for pre-order at aumidigi 45k pre-sale price of just $179.99 from December 10. The full-teardown video of the device is embedded below, check this out.

OnePlus allegedly removing negative reviews from their online store

Nowadays, nothing is going right for the prominent players in the smartphone industry. We’ve come across lots of incidents where the manufacturers are charged for false deeds and their weird marketing strategies. For instance, Samsung and Huawei have been accused of using stock photos to promote the camera prowess of their smartphones multiple times. Now, the latest to join the “thug life trend” is none other than OnePlus.

As per a Redditor – namely u/ftblwolf, OnePlus seems to filter the negative reviews on their online stores. He/She came to this conclusion after noticing that a fairly negative review posted by him/her on a OnePlus 6T tempered glass has been deliberately removed by OnePlus in a matter of days. Interestingly, it’s not an isolated issue as there are other Redditors too who all had witnessed the same.

From the scenario, it’s quite evident that OnePlus is doing some sort of unethical processing on the user review section. Some have researched the topic to see exactly what’s going on. And, the initial result seems to back the claim by the redditors. It was found that at OnePlus’ US and UK online stores, only positive reviews were to be seen, at least for the newer products, especially on OnePlus 6T and its accessories. Well, indeed, a broad search does show some negative reviews, but mostly for the older products.

As mentioned earlier, manufacturers are now on the limelight for all the wrong reasons. As the smartphone business is becoming crowded and highly competitive day by day. These companies need to realize that such marketing stunts only to impart fake reputation can only backfire. By doing so, they are not only degrading their reputation but also puts a blemish on their loyal fanbase who’d played an immense role in their upbringing. Moreover, such a deed from a company which is known for listening to their community wholeheartedly is unacceptable and hard to believe.

Nokia deliberatly delaying Android updates in lieu to boost Nokia 8.1 sales?

After a comeback, Nokia is here from past two years. The Finnish company which is now backed by a Chinese HMD Global has launched various mid-range devices. Now, they are looking to target the upper-midrange by launching more powerful devices in 2019. Along with these developments, some sources are alleging that Nokia is deliberately delaying Android updates for a number of devices in order to boost sales of Nokia 8.1.

HMD Global Logo

Though, the company has promised to launch a new update for Nokia 8 and Nokia 8 Sirocco. Later, it got delayed due to some issues in the build. Well, the source claims that this is not a genuine reason behind the delay, in actual Nokia want to boost sales of Nokia 8.1. Moreover, several other devices such as Nokia 5, Nokia 6, and Nokia 8 were also slated to receive the update this month or in the past but has been delayed. The reason is not stated but as per the information received Nokia is delaying it.

The decision is made by HMD’s Chief Product Office, Juho Sarvikas in November to push back release. He believes that users tend to buy new phones which have the newest software experience.

Now, as per the reports, it is believed that Nokia 8 will start receiving the update by the end of December or by early next year. It will be delayed for a couple of months in order to boost sales of Nokia 8.1.

Overall, it’s not a good marketing tactic that Nokia is following as of now, If it is true then Nokia is going to face a lot of flak in the upcoming days. We hope Nokia to respond to these kinds of allegations, to let us know what’s truth behind this.

Apple patents AR tech that could Potentially Help Ride Hailing Apps

Apple clearly believes a lot in the potential of augmented reality (AR) as it has been pushing developers to create AR applications for its iOS platform for a couple of years now. A new patent filing from the Cupertino giant has surfaced online showing one important area where Apple is working to leverage AR to facilitate users. Ride-hailing apps like Uber have made commutes much easier for frequent city travelers and it is becoming increasingly popular due to its convenience and affordability. However, with more and more people using such services and apps, a big problem is identifying a customer/driver.

apple

Apps like Uber do include GPS pointers to pinpoint the exact position to both the individuals involved, however, it can get confusing at times. For example, crowded locations which are common in big metro cities would make the identification issue much tricky. Apple’s AR solution is simple and effective. It will pinpoint the exact ride through an on-screen indicator. It’s kind of like what you see in games when vehicles have some pointers or highlights over them that indicate they can be used. The system would be usable both by the driver and the customer as well, suggests the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

The AR system would feed the customer’s app with the vehicle’s model, and colour and then identifying with it with the rear camera. A similar system would be used to identify the customer such as a photo. It is worth noting that this is merely a patent and it doesn’t mean that a similar feature will be introduced in the future. However, it does show that Apple is interested in that particular application.

Samsung patents fully bezel-less wrap-around display

It can be fairly said that 2018 was the year of the bezel-less smartphone. Now that we’re at the end of the year, we can definitely say that we’ve seen some breathtaking designs this year to phase out the bezels including the OPPO Find X and the Vivo NEX. However, there’s always some bezel left somewhere on the screen and a true 100 percent screen-to-body ratio has not been achieved still. Interestingly, a Samsung patent filing has popped up online that promises a display that wraps on all edges of a device. At least, that’s what the shoddy images presented by Samsung in the patent appear to show.

The patent published by the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) clearly shows a flexible display. It wraps on the left and right and even top and bottom leaving absolutely no trace of any bezels whatsoever. The low-quality image shows icons placed even on the edges. Unfortunately, the provided images from Samsung are too poor to make up anything and besides that, the filing is merely for a utility patent, not design. Also, this solution seems to create more questions than it answers such as the problem of edge detection, placement of vital sensors and so on. Regardless, Letsgodigital has created concept images based off of these patents and it does look stunning.

At the moment, bezel-less displays do seem to be the future as Samsung is getting ready to reveal its Galaxy S10 devices next year, however, this new patent design looks far from finished. If Samsung is working on an ultimate bezel-less phone, it is likely that we won’t see it anytime soon. For now, we’ll have to stay content with Infinity-O displays and flexible OLED panels.

Asus Zenfone Max (M2) vs Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro vs Motorola One Power

The battery life is the only specification for which midrange smartphones can be more advantageous than flagships and, besides the more affordable price, it is the only reason why people can prefer them to flagships. The new Asus Zenfone Max (M2) alongside Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro and Motorola One Power are among the best smartphones in terms of battery life, and this comparison will help you find out which is better to choose for your needs.

Design

Asus Zenfone Max M2, Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro, and Motorola One Power do not represent anything special when it comes to the aesthetics. They have a full metal unibody design which is a classic on midrange devices. But they come with narrow bezels thanks to their notches. The one I would pick is the Motorola One Power because it is splash resistant, but some might prefer Asus Zenfone Max M2 because it has a higher screen-to-body ratio and it is also the thinnest and most lightweight phone.

Display

Average IPS screens in each case, with a classic Full HD+ resolution except for the Asus Zenfone Max M2 which is only HD+. Asus decided to equip this device with a low-resolution panel in order to save more battery. So if you are looking for the best display quality, Motorola One Power is the most suitable device for you because it features the LTPS technology and a Full HD+ resolution, while Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro sits in the middle.

Specs & Software

Thanks to the Snapdragon 636 chipset, Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro and Motorola One Power provide almost the same level of performance, but I would prefer Motorola One Power because it has Android One and a micro SD dedicated slot allowing to use more than a SIM while you are using the expansion slot too. Asus Zenfone Max M2 has inferior performance because it features the lower-end Snapdragon 632 chipset and just 3 GB of RAM, while its opponents come with up to 6 GB of RAM depending on the market.

Camera

When it comes to photo and videos, Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro wins because of its overall camera performance. I like both its dual rear camera and its dual front camera setups, even though the rear one remains a midrange-class setup and it loses a lot of detail in low-light conditions. Motorola One Power is at the second place with a brighter aperture than Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro for the rear camera and a pretty nice front camera. We still did not test Asus Zenfone Max M2, but on the paper it is disappointing.

Battery

As said in the first paragraph, the battery is the strongest point of these smartphones which come with huge lithium units. Motorola One Power wins the battery challenge because of a bigger 5000 mAh battery allowing it to last even more than two days with a stressed use. But its opponents still provide a very long battery life, so you should not worry in any case if you are looking for a phone with an excellent battery life.

Price

I would personally choose Motorola One Power because of its bigger battery, Android One and its faster updates, good performances, and decent cameras. But it costs more than its opponents: about €270/$307, while Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro is easy to find at less than €200/$227 and Asus Zenfone Max M2 costs about €171/$195. Anyways, I would definitely spend up to €100 more for a better phone like Motorola One Power. And I hope Lenovo keeps releasing phones with a great quality price-ratio such as Motorola One Power and Lenovo S5 Pro as they are great rivals for the best-selling Chinese phones.

Nubia X 5G version likely to be announced on December 10

In April this year, Nubia CEO Ni Fei had claim a 5G test machine will be launched by the end of this year and a commercial 5G device will be announced in 2019. Nubia has officially confirmed that it will be holding a media event in Beijing on Dec. 10. The launch poster carries “dual screen” and “5G” texts which suggests that the 5G edition of the Nubia X smartphone will be announced on the said date.

Nubia December 10 Launch Event

Probably, the above poster could be hinting the arrival of Nubia X 5G smartphone. The currently available Nubia X phone is fueled by Snapdragon 845 chipset. In order to support 5G connectivity, the Nubia X should be fueled by the recently announced Snapdragon 855 SoC that includes X50 LTE modem.

Multiple smartphone manufacturers are gearing up to launch 5G enabled smartphones in the coming year. OnePlus has recently confirmed it will be launching a 5G phone at the beginning of the coming year. The Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 5G edition is slated to go official in the first quarter of 2019. Rumors have it that there will be a 5G version of the Samsung Galaxy S10. OPPO and Vivo has also demonstrated the 5G live video calling on 5G editions of Find X and Vivo NEX. These phones are all powered by Snapdragon 855 chipset.

Nubia Red Magic Mars gaming phone that was announced in the previous month features 10 GB of RAM. It is likely that the alleged Nubia X 5G could be also equipped with 10 GB of RAM.

Nubia X Blue

Nubia X is equipped with a 6.26-inch IPS LCD FHD+ display on the front and a 5.5-inch OLED HD+ screen on the rear. The SD845 chipset is assisted by 8 GB / 6 GB of RAM. It comes in 256 GB / 128 GB / 64 GB storage models.

The Nubia X has 16-megapixel + 24-megapixel dual camera on the rear. The smartphone lacks support for microSD card, 3.5mm audio jack and selfie camera. The handset is equipped with dual side-mounted fingerprint scanners. The 3,800mAh battery of the phone supports Quick Charge 4.0. It is available with a starting price of 3,299 Yuan (~$479).
