Samsung to release new Galaxy M series, storage variants revealed for upcoming models

A report surfaced a few days ago that Samsung will be axing some of its current series. These include the Galaxy J, Galaxy On, and Galaxy C series. All three will be merged into a new series called the Galaxy M.

The Galaxy M series will take on a double-digit nomenclature, so expect models such as Galaxy M30, M40 and so on. The Galaxy M series will reportedly have LCD displays, though a high-end model with an AMOLED display is also said to be in development. The switch to LCD is to keep the price low.

In other news, information about two models belonging to the upcoming series has surfaced and it also contains details about their storage variants.

The devices have model numbers SM-M205F and SM-M305F and if the rumored naming scheme is indeed correct, they should launch as the Galaxy M20 and the Galaxy M30 respectively.

Qualcomm releases list of supported devices for King of Glory Vulkan edition

Vulkan is Qualcomm‘s latest 3D graphics API. It was released as a successor to OpenGL. The new API is present in Adreno 5xx and Adreno 6xx GPUs and brings high-performance graphics to mobiles.

One of the advantages of the Vulkan API is that it is multi-threading friendly, unlike OpenGL. It does this by “providing a buffer system that can leverage all CPU cores to submit tasks to the GPU and perform memory operations”. The Vulkan API also makes cross-platform development between PC, consoles and mobile devices easier.

It turns out that Qualcomm has been working with game developers to optimize their games to take advantage of the new API. The result of one of the partnerships is an optimized version of the popular mobile game, King of Glory.

Samsung to announce Exynos 9820 on November 14

Huawei and Apple already beat the other chip makers in the race to announcing and also releasing phones powered by 7nm chipsets with their Kirin 980 and the Bionic A12/A12X proccesors respectively. Now it appears Samsung is ready to claim the third spot.

Samsung’s Exynos Twitter account posted a tweet yesterday with an image that has the text “Intelligence from within” and a November 14, 2018 date written on it. We believe this is a teaser for the launch of the next generation flagship Samsung processor – the Exynos 9820.

The Exynos 9820 will be a 7nm chipset and will first appear in the Galaxy S10 series in the first quarter of 2019 before appearing in the Galaxy Note 10 in the third quarter. The chipset will also have a 5G modem.

There are rumors the Exynos 9820 will have a tri-cluster arrangement like the Kirin 980. One cluster is said to be made of two custom Mongoose M4 cores, followed by a second cluster of Cortex-A76 cores and a third cluster of Cortex-A55 cores. The chipset has also been reported to feature a Mali-G76 GPU and have advanced AI capabilities.

Meizu has announced a battery replacement plan for its phones. The plan which costs ¥88 (~$13) will allow you to get your phone’s battery replaced with an original lithium-ion one.

Depending on the option you choose or available, you can take your phone to an authorized service repair center where the battery will be replaced or even have Meizu send someone to your home to replace it for you.

Meizu says the battery replacement plan is eligible for those who already have an existing protection plan, those whose warranty has expired, or those who just want their battery replaced even without having a warranty or protection plan in the first place.

Meizu has released a list of the devices that are eligible for the battery replacement plan. There are a lot but it doesn’t include all its products.

Design

You can not expect the best look from a phone that costs less than $150, and indeed, all of these devices feature a not exciting polycarbonate design. The most beautiful is the Samsung Galaxy J4 Core as it boasts thinner bezels and a higher screen-to-body ratio. Further, it is also way thinner than its opponents. On the other hand, Moto E5 Play is more interesting in terms of build quality as it is splash resistant.

Display

Samsung Galaxy J4 Core and Nokia 2.1 have the most interesting displays. They are very wide (6 inches 18:9 vs 5.5 inches 16:9) and they feature an HD resolution. The best phone for multimedia use is Nokia 2.1 because it has more powerful stereo speakers.

Specs

With its 2 GB of RAM making the difference, Moto E5 Play is the phone with the best hardware department. It can provide better performances, especially in multitasking. Further, it exists in a variant with the Snapdragon 427 SoC which is even better than Snapdragon 425. Nokia 2.1 has the worst hardware side with just 8 GB of internal storage, but it is the only one to have a micro SD dedicated slot which matters if you are planning to use the dual SIM functionality.

Camera

Motorola Moto E5 Play is the one I prefer even when it comes to cameras. Indeed, it has a rear camera with a brighter aperture than its opponents: f/2.0. You will still get disappointing photos if we compare this device with actual mid-rangers, but with its bright aperture and a nice pixel size, the final result is slightly better.

Battery

Nokia 2.1 has the biggest battery with a capacity of 4000 mAh which is huge for an entry-level device. Indeed, it can last two full days even with a very stressed use, thanks to both the capacity and the very efficient components. Samsung Galaxy J4 Core takes the second place with its 3300 mAh unit which is all but disappointing for the same reasons.

The Vivo Y95 is an upcoming mid-range phone that is expected to launch in India very soon. The phone’s specs and pricing leaked a few days ago. It has now been followed by images of its retail box and a promo poster, in addition to a Geekbench listing.

The Vivo Y95 was benchmarked a few days ago and it appears as the “vivo vivo 1807” on the site. The phone is running Android 8.1 Oreo and has 4GB of RAM. The chipset isn’t stated, instead what you have is ”QC_Reference_Phone”. Though we do know it is an octa-core processor with a base frequency of 1.96GHz. Our guess is that the Vivo Y95 is powered by the Snapdragon 439 processor just like the Vivo Y93 which was announced in China last week.

Images of the phone’s retail box have also been shared online. As you can see above, the Vivo Y95 has a water-drop notch which is home to a 20MP AI selfie camera. On the back of the box, it is revealed the phone has a 6.22-inch Halo FullView Display and packs a 4030mAh battery.

The bottom of the box lists the phone’s model number as Vivo 1807 just like the Geekbench listing above. It also mentions the phone will have 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The color of the unit in the retail box is Starry Black.

Xiaomi India announces increase in price of Redmi 6, Redmi 6A, Mi TVs and more, cites weakened Rupee

Just a few days ago, Realme announced it was increasing the prices of two of its products – the Realme 2 and the Realme C1. The company which is an off-shoot of OPPO gave the reason for the upward price adjustment to be the weakening Indian Rupee. Today, it is Xiaomi‘s turn to increase prices and it affects a lot more products.

The announcement was made on Twitter by the managing director of Xiaomi India, Manu Jumar Jain. He explained that the reason for the price increase is due to the Indian Rupee’s depreciation against the US Dollar by ~15% since the beginning of the year. Below is a list of the affected products and their new prices:

Redmi 6A

The 2GB RAM + 16GB and 2GB RAM + 32GB models of the Redmi 6A will add INR 600 and INR 500 to their old prices respectively and will now be sold for INR 6,599 (~$91) and INR 7,499 (~$104).

The Redmi 6 with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage will also get a INR 500 price increase and will be sold for INR 8,499 (~$117) henceforth.

Mi LED TV

The price increase affects the Mi LED TV 4C Pro 32 and the Mi LED TV 4A Pro 49. Xiaomi has added INR 1,000 and INR 2,000 to their old prices respectively. Henceforth, the 32-inch 4C Pro will be sold for INR 15,999 (~$220) and the 49-inch 4A Pro will go for INR 31,999 (~$441).

Xiaomi entered into the Indian smart TV market this year and has now become the number one brand in the segment. However, the increase in the price of the TVs may slow down its growth.

Mi Power Bank 2i (1o,000mAh Black)

The black Mi Power Bank 2i with a battery capacity of 10,000mAh gets a INR 100 price increase and will now be sold for INR 899 (~$12.40). The limited edition Red variant is currently sold at the above price.
