Moondrop MIAD 01: The phone for audiophiles, but what makes it special?

Remember the good old days of smartphones? Back when every phone wasn’t just a glass-and-metal brick designed by a committee. When manufacturers dared to be different and made phones as unique as their target audiences.

Those days seem increasingly distant now. However, some companies like Nothing are still trying to keep that spirit alive. Nothing made a splash in the smartphone market with a phone that was affordable, transparent (literally!), and refreshingly free of bloatware—a breath of fresh air in a market filled with predictable-looking phones.

Now, Moondrop, known for its high-fidelity audio equipment, has entered the smartphone scene with the MIAD 01. Not to anyone’s surprise, the MIAD 01 is a phone designed with one very specific user in mind: the audiophile who craves exceptional sound quality on the go. But what makes it special? Let’s take a closer look.

1. Dual DACs and Headphone Jacks

The MIAD 01’s defining characteristic is its unwavering commitment to high-fidelity audio. Unlike most modern smartphones that have ditched the headphone jack altogether, the MIAD 01 boasts not one, but two: a standard 3.5mm jack and a 4.4mm balanced jack.

The 3.5mm caters to casual listeners with standard headphones, while the 4.4mm caters to audiophiles who use balanced headphones, known for their superior signal separation and clearer sound.

But the real highlight of the phone is its dual Cirrus Logic MasterHiFi DAC chips. Digital-to-analog converters (DACs) translate digital audio signals into analog signals that headphones can use.

Most phones have a single, fairly basic DAC. But the MIAD 01 has dual high-fidelity DACs coupled with support for 32-bit audio processing which can significantly improve sound clarity and detail compared to phones with standard audio hardware.

Theoretically, 32-bit processing allows for a wider dynamic range, meaning the quietest and loudest parts of your music are captured with greater fidelity. It also potentially reduces noise levels, leading to a cleaner, more transparent listening experience.

2. Additional Audio Features

Moondrop doesn’t stop at dual DACs. The audio circuit boasts a 6-layer gold-sinking PCB designed to dissipate heat and minimize electrical interference. Then there’s an independent Low-Dropout Voltage Regulator (LDO) to ensure a clean and stable power supply for the audio components.

The phone also features a 100-level hardware DAC volume control. This allows for precise volume adjustments without compromising audio quality, a feature often missing in standard phone volume controls.

Audiophiles will also appreciate the ability to tinker with EQ settings through a dedicated app, allowing for granular control over the sound signature. However, the benefits of dual DACs and high-fidelity audio processing depend on the quality of the headphones or earphones you use. Lower-end audio products might not fully exploit the MIAD 01’s capabilities.

3. Mid-Range Specs

Outside the realm of audio, the MIAD 01 settles for a more conventional mid-range phone experience. It features a 6.7-inch 1080p OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a decent but not groundbreaking spec for the price point.

The phone is powered by a mid-range MediaTek Dimensity 7050 processor sufficient for everyday tasks but unlikely to impress power users. The camera system consists of a 64MP main sensor and an 8MP ultrawide sensor, again falling within mid-range expectations. Moondrop themselves acknowledge that the camera is not a highlight of the phone quoting “It’s not good, but it works.”

The phone comes pre-installed with Android 13, free of bloatware and intrusive data collection. However, it lacks Google Mobile Services (GMS) certification out of the box, which means users will need to sideload essential apps like Gmail, Maps, and the Play Store.

Keeping all things powered is a 5000mAh battery that supports 33W USB-PD charging. The phone also has 5Gbps USB 3.1 connectivity.

Design-wise, the MIAD 01 is a thick boy that measures 9.15mm at its thinnest and weighs 202 grams. But Moondrop has managed to create a phone that looks unique with the raised bar on the top housing the camera module along with MIAD 01 branding with few orange accent patterns. The remaining half has a textured finish that also contributes to the look of the phone.

4. Price and Availability

The Moondrop MIAD 01 is priced at CNY 2499 (~ $349), placing it firmly in the mid-range segment. It is currently available for purchase through select e-commerce partners and authorized stores only in China. Details on its global availability have yet to be announced.

Also, here’s a quick recap of its specs:

5. Conclusion: In its own Niche

The MIAD 01 occupies a unique niche in the smartphone market. For audiophiles seeking an unparalleled mobile listening experience, its dual DACs and dual headphone jacks are undeniably appealing.

However, the phone’s mid-range processing power, potentially underwhelming camera system, and lack of pre-installed Google Mobile Services (GMS) could be dealbreakers for some. Additionally, as a new player in the smartphone space, Moondrop’s long-term software support capabilities are also uncertain.

We have already published our review of the Moondrop MIAD 01. You can watch it below:

Xiaomi fires top executives for corruption in key markets

Xiaomi, the prominent smartphone manufacturer, is taking a strong stance against corruption with the dismissal of two regional general managers in its International Business Department.

Xiaomi

Corruption Crackdown: Xiaomi Sends Strong Message with Dismissals of Regional Leaders

According to a report by Sina Technology, Chen Bingxu, former general manager for the Latin American region, was accused of soliciting bribes, accepting expensive gifts, and indulging in lavish entertainment funded by business partners.

Owen, the ex-general manager of Western Europe, is alleged to have fabricated outsourcing deals involving substantial sums of money. Both executives were reportedly key figures in propelling Xiaomi’s overseas expansion.

Xiaomi has taken decisive action. Chen Bingxu has been dismissed, stripped of stock options, and is reportedly required to compensate the company for financial losses. In Owen’s case, not only has he been fired, but the company has also initiated legal proceedings against him, pursuing both criminal charges and civil damages.

The company’s “Zero Tolerance” approach to corruption sends a clear message to its employees worldwide. It’s particularly noteworthy considering the timing – Xiaomi is currently battling Samsung and Apple for market dominance in Europe, and Latin America presents a promising growth opportunity. Losing key regional leaders due to misconduct could have significantly hampered Xiaomi’s progress.

Looking at Latin America, the Canalys report indicates that Xiaomi shipped a healthy 5.3 million units in Q1 2024, capturing a 15.3% market share. This represents an impressive 45% year-on-year growth for the company. While in the Europen market, Xiaomi has secured the third position with a respectable 16% market share in Q1 2024.

iOS 18 lets you rename your Siri wake word with anything you want

Apple‘s iOS 18 beta introduces a new accessibility feature called Vocal Shortcuts. While it is intended to provide alternative control methods, users have discovered a way to use it for a different purpose: to give Siri a new wake word.

Vocal Shortcuts lets users assign custom voice phrases to launch shortcuts and perform various tasks on their iPhones. Interestingly, one such shortcut can be programmed to activate Siri itself. That is, users can set a custom wake word through Vocal Shortcuts to replace “Hey Siri” with a phrase of their choice.

iOS 18 Siri rename

If you’re on iOS and want to try it, navigate through the Settings app to Accessibility and then to Vocal Shortcuts. Here, select “Set Up Vocal Shortcuts” and then choose “Siri” (not “Siri Request”). Next, enter your desired wake word, such as “Computer,” as shown in the image below.

Once configured, you can say that phrase to activate Siri on your iPhone. However, there are some limitations you should be aware of. The custom wake word only works on the specific device it’s set up on and doesn’t sync across Apple devices like the HomePod. They still demand “Hey Siri” to activate.

Additionally, you won’t be able to use a seamless flow in commands like “Hey Siri, what time is it?” with the custom wake word. You will need to pause briefly after saying the custom wake word before giving an actual request, which can disrupt the natural flow of interaction.

Given these limitations, many users might opt not to use this feature. However, it still provides an alternative for those who prefer a different activation method or have accessibility needs. Note that “Hey Siri” will still work to wake up the assistant even when a custom wake word is set through Vocal Shortcuts.

Cyberstud Spin hands-on: Unique TWS earbuds with fidget spinner design, long battery life

The Cyberstud Spin 360° fidget spinner is one of the most unique TWS earbuds I have encountered. The product comes from the India-based Nu Republic brand, which has a presence in markets like Nepal, Sri Lanka, and the UAE. Here is a look at what to expect from this device.

1. Cyberstud Spin hands-on: Design

Cyberstud Spin

Fidget spinners gained immense popularity in 2017 and were marketed as a tool to help people who have trouble focusing or those who fidget to relieve nervous energy, anxiety, or stress. The Cyberstud Spin TWS earbuds adopt a fidget spinner design, featuring a red case equipped with metal gliders. The latter emits a swoosh sound when opened to access the earbuds. Since it is a fidget spinner, you can play with it to satisfy restless hands during moments of focus, adding an interactive element to your routine. However, ensure the gliders are closed to prevent the earbuds from coming out while rotating the fidget spinner. It weighs 77 grams. The retail package of the device includes the Cyberstud Spin, extra ear tips, and a USB-C cable.

2. Cyberstud Spin: Setup

Cyberstud Spin

Setting up the Cyberstud Spin 360° fidget spinner earbuds was a breeze; it requires you to remove the earbuds by opening the metal gliders. On your phone, you need to go to Bluetooth settings and scan and pair the earbuds, which takes less than a minute. Readers should note that there is no app support for this device. The following are the various touch gestures supported by the Cyberstud Spin:

•             Single tap (left earbud): Decrease volume

•             Single tap (right earbud): Increase volume

•             Single tap for call: Answer / Hang up

•             Long press (either bud during an incoming call): Reject

•             Double tap (both buds): Play / Pause

•             Triple tap (left earbud): Previous song

•             Triple tap (right earbud): Next song

•             Four taps (left earbud): Music mode

•             Four taps (right earbud): Game mode

•             Long press (each bud at a time): Voice assistant

•             Long press (both buds together): Power on / off

3. Cyberstud Spin: Audio performance

Cyberstud Spin

When it comes to audio performance, the Cyberstud Spin manages to offer decent performance through its 13mm neodymium audio drivers and enhanced bass, thanks to X-Bass technology, which is enabled by default. As can be seen, the earbuds have a transparent kind of appeal. There is Enhanced Noise Cancellation (ENC) mode, which is activated by default, helping to cut down ambient noise during calls. For gamers, the game mode offers 40ms low latency. It allows users to switch between gaming and music with just a tap.

Throughout my time with the Cyberstud Spin, I was impressed by its extended playtime, lasting for hours without recharging. The company claims that it can last for up to 70 hours on a single charge. It promises a standby time of 310 hours. Lastly, the IPX5-rated splash and sweat resistance ensures full immersion in gaming without worrying about damage from accidental spills or intense sweat sessions.

Cyberstud Spin

4. Cyberstud Spin: Price in India

Cyberstud Spin

Launched last week in India, the Cyberstud Spin 360° fidget spinner is priced at Rs 2,499 (~$30). It can be purchased through the company’s website.

Final thoughts

Cyberstud Spin

In conclusion, the Nu Republic Cyberstud Spin 360° fidget spinner earbuds combine innovative design with decent audio performance. While the audio performance is good, the design and thoughtful features like the fidget-spinner case make it a worthy addition for tech enthusiasts, gamers, and music lovers alike. It would have been good if the company made more color variants of the Cyberstud Spin.

OnePlus Nord CE 4 Lite: What to Expect From This Budget Smartphone?

The OnePlus Nord series has carved a niche for itself in the mid-range smartphone segment. Following the April release of the Nord CE 4, OnePlus is gearing up to launch another phone under the Nord moniker – the OnePlus Nord CE 4 Lite. While details are still emerging, leaks and rumors paint a clear picture of what to expect from this upcoming budget offering.

OnePlus Nord CE 4 Lite

1. Possible Oppo K12x Rebrand

The biggest rumor surrounding the Nord CE 4 Lite is that it might be a rebranded version of the Oppo K12x, launched in China earlier this year. This suggests significant similarities in specifications between the two phones.

2. Display and Design

If the K12x is indeed the blueprint, the Nord CE 4 Lite is expected to boast a significant upgrade in display technology compared to its predecessor. It will likely feature a 6.67-inch AMOLED display with FHD+ resolution and a smooth 120Hz refresh rate. Additionally, the phone is rumored to incorporate an in-display fingerprint sensor and a peak brightness of 2100 nits.

Leaked images of the device hint at a sleek design with a flat frame, a trend that has become increasingly popular in recent smartphones. The back panel appears to have a glass finish, adding to the premium look and feel.

3. Performance

The whispers surrounding the processor are a little mysterious. While the Oppo K12x came equipped with the Snapdragon 695 chipset, rumors suggest the Nord CE 4 Lite might pack the recently unveiled Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 processor. Don’t expect a drastic performance leap though, as both chipsets share similar core architecture. The phone is likely to be offered in configurations with 8GB or 12GB of RAM, providing ample multitasking capabilities. Storage options could range from 128GB to 256GB.

4. Camera

In terms of camera capabilities, the Nord CE 4 Lite is likely to sport a dual-lens setup on the rear, consisting of a 50MP primary sensor and a 2MP depth sensor. This configuration should enable decent photography results, especially in well-lit conditions. The front of the phone is rumored to house a 16MP selfie camera for capturing clear and detailed self-portraits.

5. Battery and Charging

The device is expected to feature a large 5,500mAh battery. This should easily provide enough juice to last through a full day of moderate to heavy usage. Additionally, the phone is said to support 80W fast charging.

6. Software

The Nord CE 4 Lite is expected to run on OxygenOS 14, based on Android 14, out of the box. This should provide users with a smooth and user-friendly interface along with the latest features and security updates. The phone is also likely to include a 3.5mm headphone jack, which is becoming increasingly rare in modern smartphones.

7. Pricing and Availability

While there’s no official word on pricing yet, considering the expected specifications and the Oppo K12x’s price range, the Nord CE 4 Lite is likely to fall under the Rs. 20,000 mark in India. The official launch is set for June 18, 2024, so stay tuned for confirmation on pricing and availability.

8. Conclusion

Based on the leaks, the OnePlus Nord CE 4 Lite appears to be a compelling option in the budget smartphone segment. The phone offers a large and smooth display, a decent camera setup, a long-lasting battery, and fast charging capabilities. If you’re looking for a reliable and affordable smartphone for everyday use, the Nord CE 4 Lite is definitely worth considering. However, it’s wise to wait for the official launch to get confirmation on all the specifications and the final price tag before making a decision.

Here’s why the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will be more expensive than 8 Gen 3

Qualcomm recently confirmed that the Snapdragon Summit will take place from October 24th to 26th. The event will feature the launch of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset, set to power the flagship smartphones of 2025.

The processor has been in the headlines for months, with rumors suggesting that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will be more expensive, leading to higher prices for upcoming flagship phones.

Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has now shed light on the possible reasons behind the expected price increase for Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 processor (codenamed SM8750).

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 Phones

According to Kuo, the chip, which is expected to enter mass production in the second half of 2024, may see a 25-30% price hike compared to the current Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 (SM8650), which costs around $190-$200 per unit. This means the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 could cost somewhere between $237.50 and $260.

The primary reason for this price increase is the use of TSMC’s latest and more advanced N3E production node for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, says Kuo. While the new node will deliver performance improvements, it also comes at a higher manufacturing cost.

Despite the higher price, Kuo expects strong demand for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 due to the growing high-end smartphone market, especially those with AI features. Shipments of the new chip are expected to see a “high single-digit rate” increase compared to its predecessor.

Separately, Kuo also commented on the future of Windows on ARM (WOA) processors. He expects shipments of Qualcomm’s current X Elite and X Plus chips used in WOA devices to reach around 2 million units in 2024. Kuo says this segment will see year-on-year growth of at least 100-200% in 2025.

Snapdragon X Elite

The analyst also suggests that modified versions of the X Elite and X Plus chips will be launched in 2025 which will lower the cost of WOA devices.

Reportedly, Qualcomm is also planning a low-cost WOA processor codenamed Canim for mainstream devices priced between $599 and $799. This budget-friendly chip, manufactured on TSMC’s N4 node, will retain the same AI processing power (40 TOPS) as its more expensive counterparts, claims Kuo.

Samsung Galaxy S24 FE leaks for the first time in official-looking renders

Samsung is making headlines again, this time with the Galaxy S24 FE. The Korean giant has been working on its next affordable flagship phone, and we now have our first look at the device, thanks to tipster OnLeaks via Giznext.

From the looks of it, the device closely resembles the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+. The renders reveal the phone in black and green color options with a flat design and three camera rings on the back. The frames are likely made of aluminum as there are antenna lines on them.

The right side of the mid-frame houses the volume rockers and the power button, while the bottom section features the SIM tray, USB-C port, primary speaker grill, and microphone.

The front display bezels seem slim, though not uniform, with a slightly thicker chin. The display is reported to be 6.65 inches and, as expected, will be an AMOLED panel.

For performance, the device will likely use an Exynos 2400 chip, which scored 2,047 in single-core and 6,289 in multi-core tests on Geekbench

However, the benchmark listing revealed that the SoC has a slightly lower clock speed for the prime Cortex-X4 core at 3.11 GHz compared to the standard variant’s 3.21 GHz. This suggests that Samsung may use a tweaked version of the Exynos 2400 for the S24 FE. The software side of things will be handled by Android 14-based OneUI 6.1, which will have AI features baked into it.

The S24 FE is expected to retain the camera setup of the Galaxy S24 and S23 FE, with a 50MP main camera, a 10MP telephoto lens, and a 12MP ultrawide lens. Both the main and telephoto lenses will support OIS.

The battery life and charging specs are expected to stay the same as well, with a 4,500mAh battery, 25W fast charging, and 15W wireless charging.

Phone app on Android has a new tool to avoid scammers

Unwanted calls are a constant annoyance, and scam calls have become a major concern for many phone users.  While the Google Phone app already offered some caller ID features, Google has now added a new “Lookup” button to make identifying unknown callers even easier.

Currently, when you encounter an unknown number, you have to decide whether to answer it or risk missing a legitimate call. If you choose not to answer, you might then resort to manually copying the number into Google or phone directories like Truecaller to see if any information comes up.

Google Phone app Lookup feature

That hassle will soon go away with the Lookup feature on Google’s Phone dialer. Now when you get a call from an unidentified number, you can simply tap the Lookup button within the Phone app itself. It will trigger the app to automatically search for information about the number without you needing to switch to another app or manually copy and paste.

The results of the Lookup can vary depending on the number’s activity. Ideally, for scam calls, a search should reveal the type of scam being perpetrated. This confirmation can help you decide whether to answer and if a scam, you can report the number.

Even if the “Lookup” button doesn’t provide definitive answers, it can still be helpful. In the case when the caller is legitimate and you didn’t pick up the call, they can leave a voicemail message for you to listen to later. And for less important calls they can also follow up with a text message.

The Lookup feature was initially announced alongside the June Feature Drop for Pixel devices. However, according to Android Police, the update now appears to be rolling out independently. This means it may not be immediately available on all devices, even those that received the Pixel update.

The good news is that the Lookup button doesn’t seem to require any user activation. It should simply appear within the Phone app at some point during the ongoing rollout. So, keep an eye out for the new feature and take advantage of the additional information it provides when dealing with unknown callers.

Insta360 launches GO 3S, a thumb-sized camera with 4K recording and Apple Find My support

Insta360 has released the GO 3S, an upgrade to its popular, thumb-sized GO 3 (review) action camera. The new model brings improvements in video recording resolution and introduces a feature many will find highly valuable – Apple Find My support.

Previously capped at 2.7K, the GO 3S now allows filming in 4K at 30fps. It also offers 2.7K mode at 50fps for those who want smoother slow-motion options. While 4K playback might be limited by current displays, it provides futureproofing and increased versatility for recorded footage.

Insta360 GO 3S Launch Specs Price

A major addition is Apple Find My compatibility. Pairing the GO 3S with an iPhone allows users to locate the tiny camera through the Find My app, as long as it has a battery – regardless of being switched on or off.

However, Insta360 clarifies that Find My effectiveness is “significantly limited” underwater due to Bluetooth signal interference. Additionally, the bundled Action Pod lacks Find My functionality requiring users to keep track of it manually.

Beyond 4K and Find My, the GO 3S has several other upgrades. Water resistance capacity has doubled from 16ft (5m) to 33ft (10m), though this applies only to the camera itself; the Action Pod requires a separate Dive Case for submersion.

Then there’s a new MegaView FOV setting that offers an ultra-wide mode with reduced distortion, while the Interval Video function automatically turns the camera on and off at set intervals for extended activities.

Instao360 Go 3S Design

Slow motion has been enhanced to a maximum of 200fps at 1080p and 100fps at 2.7K and timelapses gain a Dynamic Timelapse effect that crops videos to simulate panning shots which will be ideal for capturing cityscapes or sunsets.

The GO 3S can also automatically detect and adjust settings for horizontal or vertical shooting, a valuable feature for social media-focused content creation.

Visually, the GO 3S is nearly identical to its predecessor and comes in a similar set of colors too — black and white.

Even the price remains consistent between the GO 3 and GO 3S. Their 64GB model starts at $399.99 and the 128GB is available for $429.99. While the GO 3 also has a cheaper 32GB option for $379,99, just an extra $20 will get you double the storage capacity.

Indonesia Threatens to Block X (Formerly Twitter) Over Adult Content Policy

X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, is facing potential trouble in Indonesia once again. This time, the controversy centers around X’s recent policy change allowing adult content on the platform.

X previously introduced a new policy permitting the posting of adult content

Indonesia’s Minister of Communications and Informatics, Budi Arie Setiadi, has threatened to shut down access to X if it doesn’t comply with the country’s 2008 Pornography Law. This law strictly prohibits the dissemination of pornographic material.

X

Earlier this month, X officially introduced a new policy permitting the posting of adult content, as long as users employ content warnings. The company’s stance emphasizes user autonomy, stating their belief that “adults should be able to engage with and create content reflecting their own beliefs, desires, and experiences, including those related to sexuality.” This includes “AI-generated, photographic or animated content such as cartoons, hentai, or anime.”

Minister Setiadi has issued a warning letter to X, outlining the potential consequences of non-compliance. The government plans to send further communications before making a final decision. Notably, X owner Elon Musk has reportedly not responded to these warnings. X itself has also not yet commented on the situation.

Indonesia has a well-documented history of cracking down on internet pornography. In 2014, the country banned Vimeo after accusing the platform of hosting videos containing nudity. Similar bans have been imposed on Tumblr, Reddit, and Imgur. Between 2016 and 2023 alone, Indonesia blocked nearly 2 million websites believed to contain pornographic material. X’s new policy has also drawn attention and potential challenges in Malaysia, another country with strict internet content regulations.

Big News for Tesla in China! Shanghai Authorizes Testing of Full Self Driving on 10 EVs

Shanghai has authorized testing of Tesla‘s Full Self-Driving (FSD) software on 10 vehicles, paving the way for a potential wider rollout in China, according to The Shanghai Observer, a local government-backed publication. This move could intensify competition in the world’s largest auto market.

Tesla could gain an edge in China if Full Self Driving is successful

A successful launch of FSD in China would significantly impact the competitive landscape. Tesla would gain an edge over domestic rivals by offering a more advanced driver-assistance system. This could trigger a price war focused on offering increasingly affordable advanced driver-assistance features.

Tesla

Tesla has already been laying the groundwork for a broader FSD rollout in China. For the past four years, they’ve offered a limited version of FSD as a subscription service. Additionally, in April, CEO Elon Musk visited Beijing, reportedly to discuss the planned launch. News also emerged in May that Tesla was preparing to register FSD with Chinese authorities.

The recent developments extend beyond just FSD. Tesla’s commitment to the Chinese market is further highlighted by their construction of a Megapack energy storage battery factory in Shanghai, reported by Chinese state media in May. Additionally, The Shanghai Observer mentions Tesla signing a contract with Shanghai Lingang, suggesting local commercialization efforts.
