Chip giant TSMC is aggressively expanding its advanced 2nm production capacity to meet the unprecedented demand for artificial intelligence (AI) chips and high-performance computing (HPC). The company has set up five state-of-the-art fabrication plants, all entering the ramp-up phase this year, gearing towards the most aggressive expansion in the company’s history.

At TSMC’s 2026 Technology Symposium held in Silicon Valley recently, Hou Yung-ching, Senior Vice President, Deputy Co-COO, and Chief Information Security Officer, revealed that the company is pushing forward with its expansion plan at “twice the speed.” He added that the 2nm process has officially entered mass production and its yield learning curve is superior to that of the 3nm generation, even though the newer node uses a more complex nanosheet architecture, demonstrating TSMC’s leadership in advanced processes.

Even with higher production capacity, there will still be a shortage of high-performance chips due to explosive demand. To counter that, major players including NVIDIA, Apple, Qualcomm, and AMD have reportedly secured large allocations of N2 capacity. Apple alone is reported to have secured more than half of the initial N2 capacity from TSMC.

Hou Yung-ching pointed out that multiple fabs simultaneously introducing new processes in the same year has never happened before. With the five 2nm fabs in operation, TSMC is expected to increase output capacity by up to 45% compared to the same period for 3nm fabs, a significant increase in capacity utilization. TSMC also plans to upgrade or install nine new factories along with capacity expansion projects each year to significantly ramp up its production capacity, effectively doubling the company’s historical expansion rate. The production is also being expanded at existing fabrication plants in Arizona, USA; Kumamoto, Japan; and Dresden, Germany.

Supported by strong demand, TSMC’s wafer shipments for AI accelerators are increasing by 11x, and demand for large-size chips featuring advanced packaging technologies is going up by 6x. And with continuous upgrades to 3D packaging technologies, TSMC has shortened the mass production time for SoIC chips by up to 75%, resulting in faster chip production. The overall advanced packaging capacity is estimated to grow by 80% in 2027.

TSMC is witnessing explosive demand for its high-performance node, pushing the company to expand its production capacity at a pace never seen before while simultaneously advancing large-scale future expansion plans. The company will continue to strengthen its leading advantage and domination in the semiconductor industry.

The 2nm process node is the most advanced, cutting-edge node in the industry, and it’s none other than TSMC leading the next-generation wave of advanced chips. The Taiwanese chip giant has managed to achieve yields favorable for mass-producing 2nm wafers, but unfortunately, that is not enough to meet demand for AI chips and mobile SoCs, forcing smartphone brands to opt for silicon downgrades later this year.

According to a reliable Chinese tipster, Digital Chat Station, multiple smartphone brands will offer fully equipped SoCs only in their top-of-the-line “Ultra” or “Pro Max” models because of rising memory costs and the chip crisis. While the tipster doesn’t explicitly mention “TSMC,” it doesn’t take long to realize where the fingers are pointing to.

While the complexities of mass-producing advanced wafers at a larger scale pose a major challenge for the Taiwanese chip giant, AI and mobile are competing for the same advanced nodes, only worsening the supply crunch. According to industry reports, much of N2 capacity through 2026 is already effectively sold out, with Apple, Qualcomm, Nvidia, and AMD locking in large allocations. Apple alone is reported to have more than half of the initial N2 capacity.

Also read: TSMC hits 5GHz speeds on smartphone processors, leaving Huawei generations behind

Samsung is the most prominent alternative to TSMC, but it is struggling even worse in bringing up its 2nm GAA yields. That leaves smartphone brands with limited supply, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see high-end chips being reserved for top-end models. This explains why Qualcomm is rumored to launch Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro as part of its dual-chip launch strategy. Apple is also said to follow a similar approach with its A20 and A20 Pro.

Even MediaTek is reportedly adopting the same strategy, offering the Dimensity 9600 and Dimensity 9600 Pro. The more affordable SoC will be offered to less premium phones, and the more expensive silicon will be reserved for top-end phones. We can also expect smartphone prices to rise, with the DRAM crisis among the main culprits.

Samsung‘s foundry business has been facing difficulties attracting customers for their latest chip manufacturing processes (3nm and 4nm). Despite this challenge, they are actively forging ahead with development of even more advanced technology, including the 2nm process.

Samsung is also planning to mass produce chips using 3nm tech later this year

This 2nm process will utilize next-generation gate-around transistor (GAA) technology, which is expected to be mass produced in 2025. Samsung will be showcasing this technology at upcoming industry conferences.

GAA itself is a new transistor design that improves efficiency and performance by allowing for better current flow. Samsung first introduced GAA technology in their 3nm process, but so far, only their own Exynos processors have taken advantage of it. Compared to 5nm chips, the first-generation 3nm GAA chip offers significant improvements in area reduction, performance, and energy efficiency.

Looking ahead, Samsung plans to mass produce chips using the second-generation 3nm GAA technology later in 2024. This technology is expected to offer even greater advancements. While their main competitor, TSMC, hasn’t adopted GAA technology yet, both companies (along with Intel) are expected to utilize it in their upcoming 2nm processes.

Most chip manufacturing companies are continuously making efforts to expand, accent, and enhance chip manufacturing to meet the ever-growing demand. Samsung Electronics, TSMC, and Intel are now working on 2nm chip manufacturing, which will go live for production next year. Amidst all this, Samsung Foundry has received its first 2nm AI Accelerator Order along with HBM and Advanced Packaging Services.

In an announcement along with the Q4 2023 report, Samsung mentions the jump in demand for smartphones and PCs, which is also turning the tide for the foundry business. According to assumptions, the chip foundry market will return to the demand level of 2022 this year. With increasing demand for AI and other complex processes, chip makers are continuously increasing their efforts to start developing 2nm chipsets.

Samsung in particular is currently mass-producing 3nm GAA chips, while the 2nm process is slated for next year. The new process aims to increase performance by 25% in comparison with the 3nm GAP process. Even so, it will improve the power efficiency by 12% and reduce the size by over 5% in comparison with the 3nm 3GAP. Samsung could get a Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 manufacturing consignment, which will use their 3nm GAP process.

Major players like TSMC, Intel, and Samsung are leading the charge to tackle the growing demand for the latest and most advanced semiconductor manufacturing process. Reports suggest that Apple is set to become TSMC’s inaugural customer for the 2nm process. Additionally, Intel has announced receiving orders for its 18A process, specifically for 5G infrastructure chips, from Ericsson.

Amidst this competition, Samsung is gearing up to attract customers to its 2nm process by offering competitive prices. Qualcomm, a major player in the semiconductor industry, is reportedly planning to shift some of its flagship System on Chips (SoCs) to Samsung’s SF2, indicating the company’s interest in Samsung’s 2nm manufacturing capabilities. The move towards more advanced processes reflects the industry’s continuous pursuit of enhanced performance and efficiency in semiconductor manufacturing.

Processor technology is advancing rapidly. This means that chips are becoming more powerful, smaller, and more efficient. For example, the iPhone 14 Pro Max uses a 4 nm chip. Even though 3 nm chips have not yet been released, TSMC has recently started preparing to trial-produce 2 nm chips. Here are the details…

TSMC to start 2nm chip trial production for Apple and Nvidia

TSMC is preparing to trial-produce 2 nm chips. This is a major step forward for the semiconductor industry, as it means that even more powerful and efficient chips are on the horizon. The company has sent 1,000 R&D people to work at its new factory in Taiwan. This facility is still under construction, but soon, it will be a state of the art semiconductor manufacturing plant when it is completed. TSMC plans to start mass production of 2 nm products in 2025.

TSMC’s 2nm technology is expected to significantly outperform its previous 3nm chips in terms of both speed and power consumption. Specifically, the 2nm chips will be 10-15% faster than their 3nm counterparts while using the same power voltage. Furthermore, they will consume 25-30% less power than 3nm chips when operating at the same speed. These advancements are expected to boost the performance of devices using these chips, offering faster processing speeds while consuming less energ

TSMC’s move to prepare for 2nm production may seem insignificant at first, but it’s actually a very big deal. TSMC manufactures chips for dozens of tech giants, including Apple and Nvidia. This means that 2nm production could lead to much more powerful phones, computers, graphics cards, and gaming consoles. The smaller size and less energy consumption of 2nm chips could also help to overcome overheating issues. This could make handheld consoles and gaming laptops more stable and reliable.

Recent reports suggest that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is making significant strides in its efforts to sprint towards the next generation of process technology. TSMC has reportedly initiated preparatory work for 2nm trial production and plans to incorporate an advanced AI system to enhance energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and accelerate trial production efficiency. Industry insiders anticipate that major players such as Apple and Nvidia will be among the first customers after TSMC achieves 2nm mass production, solidifying their lead over competitors like Samsung and Intel.

Apple and Nvidia Expected to be Early Customers

TSMC has refrained from commenting on the rumors surrounding its activities. However, the company emphasized that the development of 2nm technology is progressing smoothly, with mass production expected to commence in 2025.

Sources reveal that TSMC has dispatched engineers to the Zhuke research and development (R&D) plant to commence preliminary preparations for 2nm trial production. The company plans to assemble a dedicated R&D team of over 1,000 experts to spearhead global mass production at Zhuke Baoshan Wafer Fab 20. This advanced production base, planned to span six phases, will serve as TSMC’s primary 2nm facility in the future.

Industry insiders indicate that TSMC intends to establish a small-scale trial production line at Zhuke for initial 2nm research and development purposes. The goal for this year is to conduct trial production of nearly 1,000 pieces, followed by a risk trial production sprint in 2024 and mass production in 2025. TSMC’s 2nm technology will leverage a new gate-around (GAA) transistor architecture, which is expected to significantly enhance system performance compared to 3nm technology. This improvement has garnered strong investment interest from potential customers, allowing for greater customization of solutions.

A lower value of nm for chipsets refers to the size of the transistor’s gate length in nanometers. Smaller transistors result in increased performance, higher efficiency, more transistors on a single chip, reduced heat generation, and potential cost reduction. These advancements allow for faster data processing, improved energy efficiency, increased functionality, better thermal management, and cost savings in chip production. However, the nm value is just one factor influencing a chipset’s overall performance, with other aspects like architecture and design also playing important roles.

TSMC previously unveiled its 2nm family process blueprint, with plans to commence mass production of the N2 variant in 2025. The backside rail design of N2 is tailored for high-speed computing (HPC) products, set to debut in the latter half of 2025. The N2P and N2X versions of the 2nm family are projected to launch in 2026. Furthermore, Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang has also publicly revealed that TSMC will integrate an AI system developed in collaboration with Nvidia and other partners into the 2nm trial production operations.

Rapidus, a chipmaker backed by the government of Japan, has announced its new plans for advanced semiconductor technology. The company is seeking to build 2nm prototype process line by the year 2025.

In other words, the Japanese chip venture might be seeking to catch up to the world’s largest contract chipmaker, TSMC. For those unaware, the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is set to start risk production of its next gen 2nm process in 2024. Furthermore, mass production for this cutting edge semiconductor process is also set to begin sometime in 2025. Similarly, even Samsung is rushing to begin production of its 2nm process line by the same year.

Unfortunately, the company has only announced its prototype line’s timeline. The mass production of the advanced process is only slated to begin sometime in the late 2020s. Although, even with this schedule, the Japanese government backed firm is still not too far behind the industry giant, TSMC. The company will also officially finalize its plans regarding the site location for the prototype facility in March. Notably, this site will also be responsible for the mass production later down the road.

Some of the key factors that will influence this decision is the availability of stable water and robust electrical infrastructure. This location should also be able to “attract domestic and foreign talent easily,” as per Rapidus President Atsuyoshi Koike. He stated that “we aim to produce only advanced chips, establishing a high margin business model,” further adding that “We want to bring in engineers from areas that different companies specialize in, in order to create new value”.
