Earlier this year, Google revealed its plan and roadmap for the Android 11 development, including developer previous and beta versions. After releasing three developer previews, the company is now adding one more.

So far, Google has released DP1, DP2, and DP3 versions as a part of the developer previews. Now, it was time for the company to jump on the beta versions with the Beta 1. However, instead of Beta 1, the company is releasing DP4.

The addition of DP4 version was not a part of the plan and thus it pushes back the timeline for other versions. The company said that it “decided to add a bit of extra time in the Android 11 release schedule.” And with this, all the subsequent milestones by a month, with a final release still on track for Q3.

The new Android 11 DP4 is focused on performance improvements and iterative updates. It has fixed the location service icon issue and it’ll no longer appear in the status bar when the service is not in use. The company has also fixed the issue where the status bar icons were running over the edge for some device.

Moving ahead of the Developer Preview builds, the company has confirmed that there will be three Beta releases ahead of the stable Android 11 launch. Here’s how the company has divided the upcoming beta versions.

• Beta 1 in June. It will come with the final SDK and NDK APIs and the company will open up Google Play publishing for apps targeting Android 11.
• Beta 2 will be released in July. The company claims that it will reach Platform Stability with the release of this version.
• Beta 3 release moves to August and the company will include release candidate builds for final testing. This will be the final beta version ahead of the stable release.

The Android 11 Developer Preview system images are available for Google’s own devices — Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a XL, Pixel 4, and Pixel 4 XL, as well as in the Android Emulator.

For those who have already installed Android 11 Developer Preview 3, the over-the-air (OTA) update will be rolling out. Users can also use the Android Flash Tool to install this new update.

Google released Android 11 Developer Preview 3 yesterday. It can be installed on all the Pixel smartphones except on the original duo. The DP1 debuted in February, followed by the DP2 in March. The search giant has planned a total of six Android 11 Developer Previews before officially launching the new OS in the second half of the year. That being said, just like the first two DPs, the Android 11 DP3 has also brought new features and changes.

Officially, Google has stated five new changes in Android 11 DP3 and they are as mentioned below.

App exit reasons updates

Apps on Android can exit for various reasons such as crash, system kill or user action. Being a developer, its necessary to know why the app exited. Hence, Google has introduced new exit reasons API to request details of the app’s recent exits.

GWP-ASan heap analysis

With GWP-ASan heap analysis, developers can find and fix memory safety issues. It is a sampling allocation tool that detects heap memory errors. It is enabled by default in platform binaries and system apps but developers can enable it on their apps as well.

ADB Incremental

Google has increased the installation speed of large APKs (2GB+) like games over ADB by 10x times. This feature is currently only available on Pixel 4/4XL as it requires the new Incremental File System. Developers will have to sign their APKs with the new APK signature scheme v4 format and use updated ADB command line tool to install them. Devices launching with Android 11 in the future will have the new file system to support this feature.

Wireless Debugging

The new ‘Wireless debugging’ in Developer options can utilize the full speed of the latest Wi-Fi standards. Developers can pair their Android 11 DP3-running device with their PC simply entering pair code. To further improve the experience, Google has plans to add QR code scanning for pairing in the future.

Data access auditing updates

Data access auditing lets developer instrument their app to better understand how it accesses user data and from which user flows. Additionally, several APIs have been renamed and hence it is advised to check out the changes.

Further, as per the timeline provided by Google, Android 11 Beta releases will begin next month, i.e. May. Which means like the last two years, developers and interested users will be able to try the latest Android on specific devices from different OEMs.

Google recently unveiled the Android 11 Developer Preview for Pixel devices. Instead of announcing the newer Android version at IO Developer’s conference during summers, the search giant launched the Android 11 Developer Preview a few months earlier. The newer build is available for Pixel 2, 3, 3a and 4 devices, but it can be installed on Project Treble supported devices also. We have prepared a guide to install the Android 11 Developer Preview GSI on POCO F1.

GSI is an untouched AOSP build for devices that are compatible with Project Treble devices. However, it is not advised to be used by general users as it is solely for the developers to test their apps and products prior to the official rollout. Project Treble is meant for rapid software update rollouts across compatible devices.

Project Treble carve the high-level code and low-level code and at the same time allow developers to bring updates without affecting the high-level code running hardware. The Operating System layer is differentiated from the high-level code under Project Treble. On the same principle, users can boot Poco F1 using the Android 11 Developer Preview GSI build.

Currently, the Android 11 stable version is a few months away, but until then the users can enjoy the Developer Preview. Moreover, it is not even confirmed from POCO whether the device will receive the official Android 11 update or not.

Install Android 11 Developer Preview on POCO F1

The guide is solely for the Poco F1 device and we suggest to take necessary backups before proceeding.

Note: We don’t recommend installing Android 11 Developer Preview if the device is your daily driver. There are many bugs and issues which may hamper your experience even while accessing basic functions. 

Prerequisites:

• Backup your data to any external media.
• Charge your device up to at least > 60%.
• You must have the latest firmware installed.
• Poco F1 must have an unlocked bootloader. (Follow our guide to unlocking the Poco F1 bootloader)

Downloads

• Download and Install TWRP on Poco F1. However, the users can also use any other compatible recovery like OrangeFox.
• Download the GSI system image that was ported from a Pixel device by Erfan.
• Download the ROM file from the Poco F1 t0 successfully boot GSI image.
• Download Force Encryption Disabler to save internal storage.
• Download Fastboot ADB and drivers to perform all the necessities.

Steps to install Android 11 on Poco F1

1. Extract Fastboot ADB and drivers in a folder on your PC. Then, move all the files like GSI image, ROM and Force Encryption Disabler in the same folder.
2. Connect your smartphone with a PC using a USB cable, and verify the connection by executing the following command:

   adb reboot recovery

3. Once in recovery mode, goto Wipe > Advanced Wipe and select Dalvik, Cache, System, Vendor, and Data for a clean wipe. Swipe to confirm the data wipe.
4. Head over to “Install” and select the ROM file that you have downloaded from the above link. Swipe to confirm the flash.
5. Now, “Install” Force Encryption Disabler to prevent hardware encryption.
6. Once again, “Wipe” the cache before moving ahead.
7. “Reboot System” to boot for the first time on new Pixel 4 ROM.
8. Once booted into Pixel 4 ROM, you need to enable ADB from the Developer option.
9. Now, boot into the recovery by using the appropriate button configs or connect your device with PC via USB cable and enter the following command:

   adb reboot recovery

10. After booting into recovery, once again head over to Install > select GSI image and then browse “GSI System Image.” Swipe to confirm flash, and then “Reboot System”.
11. Enjoy the Android 11 GSI on the Poco F1.

There are a lot many bugs, and some primary features may not even work on the first preview build of Android 11. It is recommended to be installed on a spare Pixel smartphone. Install Android 11 DP on Pixel smartphones

Prerequisites:

• Make a full backup of your data before proceeding, as your data will be lost while installing the Android 11.
• Download ADB and Fastboot drivers on your PC/Laptop
• Ensure your smartphone is at least 60% charged.

Method1: Install by Sideloading via Recovery and ADB

Note: This method does not require any unlocked bootloader access to install.

Carefully follow the instructions to install the Android 11 Developer Preview.

1. Extract the ADB and fastboot drivers on your PC.
2. Download and save the otaupdate.zip in the ADB and Fastboot directory on PC.
3. Enable Developer Mode by heading to Settings > About Phone > Tap “Build Number” 10 times.
4. Enable the USB Debugging Mode by heading to Settings > Developer Options > toggle “USB Debugging” option.
5. Connect your Pixel smartphone with a computer via a USB cable and authorize your connection if you’re connecting for the first time with ADB computer.
6. Run the below command to confirm the device’s connection with the PC.

   adb devices

7. Execute the following command to reboot into the recovery mode:

   adb reboot recovery

8. Now, select “Apply Update from ADB” on your phone.
9. Flash the Android 11 DP OTA zip(downloaded from the above link) by typing the below command:

   adb sideload "filename".zip

10. The phone will take some time to install the Android 11 DP.
11. Select “Reboot Reboot now” to reboot the system.
12. Enjoy!!

Method 2: Install Full Factory Image via Fastboot

It’s a bit easy method if you have an unlocked bootloader. Moreover, it gives an option to retain user data.

1. Extract ADB and Fastboot tools into a folder on PC.
2. Download the factory image of the respective Pixel smartphone from this link.
3. Enable the Developer mode by heading to Settings > About Phone > Tap “Build Number” 10 times.
4. Enable USB debugging mode by heading to Settings > Developer Options > Enable “USB Debugging”.
5. Extract the downloaded factory image.zip file into your ABD and fastboot folder.
6. Note: If you want to retain data then edit flash-all.sh (For MAC) or flash-all.bat (For Windows) script file with a text editor. Find and remove/delete -w flag in the fastboot update command.
7. Now, Connect your phone with PC using a USB cable.
8. Type the below command to boot into Fastboot mode:
   adb reboot bootloader
9. Execute the following command on Linux/macOS PC:
   flash-all
   Note: For Windows, just double click the flash-all.bat file.
10. The device reboots once your phone reboots into Fastboot mode.
