A fresh concept design called the Pixel Duo imagines a smartphone that ditches the usual. Instead of a single display on the front, this model features two distinct screens that deliver different visual experiences. So here’s what makes this phone so unique.

Pixel Duo: New Concept Phone With Dual Front Displays

Even with a typical dual display smartphone, one screen is the primary panel with a secondary one usually being housed on the outside/back as a cover panel. But with the Pixel Duo concept, both displays have moved to the front, creating a unique dual screen layout. However, this isn’t even the wackiest bit yet. One of the screen is a conventional LCD panel, although it is the smaller of the two (3.5 inches). The much larger 5.2-inch screen is an E-ink display.

The 3.5-inch IPS panel carries a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. Meanwhile, the 5.2-inch E-ink has a 1300 x 838 pixel resolution. If you’re unfamiliar with the E-ink tech, this screen only shows content in the grayscale. You’ll often find this display technology being used in e-books.

So this will offer a more natural reading experience to the users. On the other hand, the LCD panel allows a better experience when using the camera (as a viewfinder and to view the captured pictures and images). We can expect an impressive battery life experience as well considering how the E-ink display is more energy efficient compared to typical screens. Keep in mind that this is still just a concept phone, so it’s unclear if such a device will ever see a commercial release.

Caviar is a Russian brand that offers luxury smartphones based on Apple iPhone or Samsung Galaxy series. Now, the company seems to be working on something different and unique, which has been revealed as Caviar Origin.

The company has announced a concept smartphone called Caviar Origin. The device is just a concept phone and it remains to be seen if the company continues using the same design and material for the phone that is launched commercially.

As for the design, the Caviar Origin comes with a screen and a physical keypad at the bottom. It is not known if the display is touchscreen or not. Given that it’s a luxury phone, the keypad is gold-plated.

The smartphone runs the Android operating system out-of-the-box and thus, can run any compatible Android application. Currently, nothing more is known about this smartphone but we expect to get more information in the coming months.

The Caviar Origin smartphone will be made available for purchase in the fourth quarter of this year. Given that it is just a prototype at the moment, there’s a possibility that the phone may go through some minor changes.

As for the pricing, the device is suggested to have a starting price of $6,000 but for the final price, we will have to wait for the official announcement because of the cost associated with the precious metals and gemstones. It also remains to be seen in which markets the company plans to launch this smartphone.

Earlier today (5th February 2021), Xiaomi had teased that it would be unveiling something new and innovative that would be “mind blowing.” And it seems the company kept its word as it revealed its first Quad Curved Waterfall Display Concept Smartphone, which features a curved display on all four edges of the device.

Through its official Twitter handle, the Chinese tech giant shared an image poster revealing this concept device. Looking at this device, it can be observed that all four edges of the device are curve around the side of the device at an angle of 88 degrees. While curved edges aren’t something new in the industry, having all four edges being curved has never been seen before. In other words, the company’s first Quad Curved Waterfall Display Concept Smartphone is truly a unique handset that also signifies its emphasis on ‘innovation’. From the front, the device would seem to be mostly covered by the display, except the corners.

Furthermore, the smartphone manufacturer stated that it achieved the quad curve 88 degree surface through “countless breakthroughs in glass bending and laminating technology to extend the limits of the display to infinity.” Xiaomi also added that the device features a port free unibody design and has been built using a total of 46 different “groundbreaking” patents. Notably, the 88 degree curved edges have been prior to this in devices like the Mate 30 Pro.

Similarly, other OEMs have also showcased their curved edge smartphones in the past as well. However, these devices generally only feature just two curved edges that were on either side of the device and didn’t include the top notch and the bottom chin region of a handset. While the Xiaomi concept certainly looks futuristic and eye catching at the moment, it is unclear if the company actually aims on commercially launching such a product. Another major concern regarding the device would also be its durability, as having more edges as glass/display makes it more prone to cracks even from simple falls.

OPPO is yet to officially launch a commercial foldable smartphone but what the company is working on seems much better and advanced than what other companies are doing in terms of foldable devices.

The Chinese smartphone brand has today unveiled a new concept phone which it has developed in collaboration with Japanese design studio Nendo. The device, which OPPO is referring to as “slide-phone”, features a triple-fold design.

With a triple-fold design, the device can be easily fit into the palm of the hand when it is folded. Sliding up one fold offers a 1.5-inch screen, which seems good enough for checking notifications or answering phone calls, or access a music player.

Further sliding up, to unfold the phone a second time, offers a 3.15-inch display, which the company claims is good enough for taking photos and some casual gaming. When fully unfolded, the phone has a 7-inch screen with narrow bezels. However, the form factor is unusually long but could be good for multitasking, especially in landscape orientation.

OPPO is also offering a stylus, which can be tucked away into the phone’s body. There are three camera sensors on the phone’s outer shell along with an LED flash. As the company is highlighting the phone’s design, the specifications have not been revealed.

The design of this new OPPO “slide phone” concept seems quite impressive but the fact is that we won’t be able to get hands on such a device anytime soon. While the company has not confirmed this, the device is still a few years away from making its commercial debut.

As said, OPPO is yet to launch its first foldable smartphone and we expect that to happen soon. There’s a possibility that the first such device from the company could be a rollable display smartphone, which it showcased recently as OPPO X 2021 Concept Smartphone.

Smartphone manufacturers are constantly pushing the boundaries with technological innovation. Every year we see a new feature or standard become the norm or a new launch that evolves upon the fundamental designs. Now, Oppo has unveiled the Oppo X 2021 Rollable Concept smartphone that features an extending display, which is the first of its kind.

The efforts of the Chinese tech giant’s R&D is on full display at the Inno Day 2020 event as the Oppo X 2021 arrives with a unique extending screen. Its display expands from 6.7 inches to 7.4 inches, which is achieved through the company’s rollable concept technology. This makes the display durable with no “hard folding” involved to eliminate the “headache’ of a crease forming in the middle of the display, which is common on foldable handsets. The screen is an OLED panel that extends through its 6.8mm Roll Motor that is a proprietary design. Notably, the company had filed for 122 patents for this project, out of which 12 are used on the scroll mechanism alone.

Oppo placed an emphasis on the durability and support structure behind its rollable display. The company built a special 2 in 1 plate, which acts as the support when the display is contracted or extended. It achieves this by having the support panel comprise of two parts with one portion sliding out along with the display to keep a rigid structure and achieve a flat surface. Oppo’s Chief 5G scientist Henry Tang stated that “Compared with foldable technologies, rollable displays are a lot more adaptable as they are adjustable between minimum and maximum sizes for different use case scenarios.”

Furthermore, the company also added a custom made laminate for the screen for additional protection. The Warp Track is a 0.1mm laminate that firmly protects the screen. Oppo intends to have this device enhance the usual functions that a smartphone offers. In other words, the additional real estate would offer a wider view during gaming, extra real estate for reading e-books, and even offer split interface to make full use of the extended display.

Unfortunately, finer details and specifications of the smartphone is currently unknown nor has the company revealed further details regarding the panel supplier or mention anything specific regarding availability. Levin Liu, Oppo Vice President and Head of Oppo Research Institute, also stressed at the device’s concept stage but he hopes to bring this technology to consumers “at the right time.”

At the same time, Vivo has developed a new concept smartphone, dubbed IFEA that has a detachable front camera module. Now, this modular design from the Chinese company has won the Red Dot Design Award.

Based on the description on the award landing page, this new IFEA smartphone design from Vivo is an attempt to offer a new photography system and experience which is totally different from what is usually offered with a smartphone.

IFEA is designed to equip smartphones with a detachable front camera. It integrates enhanced user-friendly shooting features and the users can create and record images and videos anytime and anywhere.

So far, it seems that the phone is just a concept design and the company has no plans to make it available commercially anytime soon. If Vivo is indeed planning to launch it in the market, we should hear from the company soon.

Back in September last year, Xiaomi had announced the Mi MIX Alpha concept smartphone, getting much attention because of its unique surround screen technology that covers the majority portion of the device.

Earlier this year, in January, during a business conference held by Xiaomi Group, it was revealed that the Mi MIX Alpha is ready for mass production. Today, at Xiaomi Science and Technology Park, the company reportedly showcased the smartphone with few upgrades.

The Xiaomi Mi MIX Alpha is priced at 19,999 yuan in China which roughly converts to $2,883. However, the smartphone is not yet available for purchase in the company’s home country and we are anticipating more information on this.

The upgraded variant comes with support for full dual-mode 5G with SA/NSA connectivity and is now powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC. When first announced, the device was powered by the Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset.

Vivo had been teasing its latest concept flagship smartphone for a while, even up till this morning. But now, its finally here as the company launched the Vivo Apex 2020. It arrives with many first of its kind features ranging from cameras display and more.

Vivo Apex 2020

The concept flagship was initially slated to be unveiled during the MWC 2020 in Barcelona. Unfortunately, ever since the cancelation of the major event, many OEMs like Vivo lost a stage for various launches. However, the company in a special launch event earlier today (28th February 2020) has finally announced the Apex 2020.

Design and Specifications

One of the highlighting features of the Vivo Apex 2020 is undoubtedly its display. It sports a 6.45 inch “FullView Edgeless Display” with a 120 degree curved edge. In other words, its a curve far beyond what last year’s flagship the Vivo Nex 3 featured and has been aptly dubbed as a “waterfall display.” Similar to previous iterations, the Vivo Apex 2020 doesn’t feature any ports, opening or seams. In its stead, the smartphone is equipped with virtual buttons.

Furthermore, the notch on the Apex 2020 is almost nonexistent, and impressively, the Apex 2020 has managed to successfully integrate a 16 megapixel selfie camera right under the display. Vivo stated that this was achieved thanks to an increase in light transmittance in the portion of the display that houses the camera by 6 times. The company has even heavily relied on software algorithms to achieve better image quality.

Under the hood, the Vivo Apex 2020 features Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 SoC with the X55 5G Modem. It is also equipped with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. The display resolution is 1080p and the phone weighs 169 grams. The device runs the latest Android 10 and arrives in both Black and White colors as well.

When talking about smartphone cameras, Vivo isn’t exactly the first name that pops into one’s mind. However, it seems that the company has outdone itself with various first of its kind technologies. The rear camera module features what Vivo calls the “continuous optical zoom” lens. In simpler terms, unlike most flagship telephoto/periscopic lens which feature both optical and digital zoom to achieve magnified results; the Vivo Apex 2020 presents an actual moving lens, enabling magnification capabilities ranging from 5x to 7.5x zoom.

Vivo stated that the 16 megapixel lens is just 6.2mm thick due to its periscopic design, allowing it to be housed in the 8.8mm body. But the innovation doesn’t end there, the company has made a major breakthrough in the industry with its Gimbal-like stabilizing camera for its 48 megapixel primary camera. Vivo claims this provides an increase in stabilization by over 200 percent in comparison to current OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) standards of today.

Apparently, the company designs for the new camera module was inspired by the moving eyes of a chameleon, helping it better track objects. Although, it is currently unknown just what implications and practical uses the design will offer in real life. Just to put it into perspective, a gimbal-like stabilization and optical zoom of this caliber are generally seen in proper handheld cameras, so it is nothing short of an impressive feat that has been achieved.

Battery and 60W Wireless Fast Charging

Yes, you read it right. The Vivo Apex 2020 supports 60W wireless fast charging. Since the smartphone has no ports, wireless charging is the only way to go, and the company pulled out every trick up its sleeve to make it highly practical. Vivo claims that the technology can charge a 2,000mAh battery pack in just 20 minutes. Thus, this wireless charging technology is capable of even rivaling most wired fast charging solutions out there.

Conclusion

The Apex 2020 is the culmination of efforts from Vivo’s dedicated R&D department, engineers, designers and a whole lot more. Although the device wouldn’t see a mass commercial launch, it still showcases the innovation the smartphone industry has to offer. Each iteration in the Apex series brings new things to the table, and the 2020 edition has just raised the bar. We may see a new Vivo Nex device that brings a lot of these features to a commercial device in the near future, but as of right now, the device remains a concept smartphone and will not be available for purchase.

Vivo has today revealed that the company’s next-generation Apex-series smartphone — Vivo APEX 2020 Concept Smartphone will be officially unveiled in its home country China on 28th February at 11:00 AM local time.

The company was expected to announce its APEX 2020 Concept Smartphone at the Mobile World Congress 2020 in Barcelona, Spain. However, as the MWC 2020 conference got cancelled due to concerns related to coronavirus, Vivo was forced to change it launch schedule and has now revealed that the phone will be showcased on 28th February in Beijing, China.

Making this announcement, Vivo said that the upcoming APEX 2020 represents vivo’s prediction and layout of mobile phone development and technological innovation in 2020, said the company.

The company has also released the first teaser poster for the smartphone that shows faintly curved screen and the number “120” which could be 120Hz screen or something complete different. Another image shows the back of the phone with periscope zoom camera for loss-less zoom.

Earlier today (10th January 2020), a business conference was held in Beijing by the Xiaomi Group. In the event, a notable announcement regarding the Mi Mix Alpha was made public, that the device is currently ready for mass production

The event saw the appearance of the Chinese company’s research and development team for smartphones (the ones behind the surround screen technology in the Mi Mix Alpha), who won Xiaomi’s Annual Technology Award for 2019. And in an interview, Cui Baoqiu, chairman of Xiaomi’s technical committee and Han Haicai, the architect behind the surround sound screen research and development team brought up the topic regarding the production of Mi Mix Alpha.

According to the senior officials, the smartphone has not been mass produced yet, with no plans of doing so being on the table. However, they stated that Xiaomi is currently at the capacity where it can start the mass production of the handset.

It has further been revealed that the Mi Mix Alpha was developed after Lei Jun (Co-Founder and CEO) decided on the need for a unique and innovative smartphone. Additionally, the device was also made to break the repetitive cycle of similar types of smartphones that are currently in circulation.

Xiaomi had initially announced the Mi Mix Alpha back on 24th September 2019, which has garnered a lot of attention ever since. Xiaomi recently unveiled its Mi MIX Alpha concept smartphone that offers a massive 180.6 percent screen-to-body ratio, highest among any mobile phone launched in the market so far, thanks to the wraparound display.

Now, Xiao Zhiyuan, Director of Marketing for Xiaomi’s mobile phones has confirmed through a post on Weibo that the Mi MIX Alpha smartphone will be getting an official mobile case for the protection.

However, he has not revealed more details about this. It also remains to be seen how the case will work, given that majority of the smartphone is a display except for bar-like module on the back that houses the camera sensors.

Coming to the smartphone, the Mi MIX Alpha is the world’s first smartphone with a curved display that wraps around almost the entire device. Except for the tiny vertical strip that houses the camera at the back, the display surrounds the entire smartphone, including the sides and the back.

This is a single display panel of 7.92-inch that wraps around the entire body bringing the screen to body ratio to a staggering 180.6%! This is made possible also because of the extremely narrow 2.15mm bezels on the top and the bottom.

The device is confirmed to be powered by the Snapdragon 855+ processor with 5G dual SIM support. There will be at least one version with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of UFS 3.0 storage. The battery isn’t very large at 4,050mAh but it does support 40W fast charging just like the Mi 9 Pro 5G.

It is also the world’s first smartphone to feature a 100MP+ resolution camera sensor. This is made possible by using the Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX 108MP camera sensor at the back of the device. The sensor was developed in close collaboration with Xiaomi, hence it’s no surprise that we are seeing it first on the Mi Mix Alpha 5G.

The 108MP primary sensor on the Mi Mix Alpha is ultra-large with a 1/1.33″ sensor which is capable of outputting 12032 x 9024-pixel resolution images. It is coupled with a 12MP telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom and a 20MP ultra-wide-angle camera lens.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha will be produced on a very small scale on a trial basis at first. The company has priced it at a staggering 19,999 Yuan (~$2814), which is even more than Samsung’s new foldable smartphone.

Last month, on 30th January, Meizu officially kicked-off its plan to commercialize the Meizu Zero smartphone and launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo, with the order expected to start shipping in April this year.

Now, after around 15 days, Meizu Zero — the world’s first holeless smartphone — has managed to secure about 34 percent of its goal of raising $100,000. The company now has 16 days left to secure the rest of the amount to turn this concept phone into a reality.

If the company fails to raise the amount of $100,000 in the specified time limit, none of the company will go to the Chinese company and the existing 30 backers will get the refund. This is because the company chose the fixed goal route in which the campaign only receives funding when the goal is reached within the deadline.

In terms of specifications, the Meizu Zero features a 5.99-inch curved OLED panel with full HD+ resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels. It is equipped with mSound 2.0 technology which makes it possible for the smartphone to emit sound from the screen which eliminates the need for earpiece and external speaker.

The screen of the smartphone is also embedded with an in-display fingerprint sensor — something that almost all flagship smartphones have adopted. The device also comes with an IP68 certified for dustproof and waterproof to keep it completely sealed and there’s no opening on the device.

Since there’s no holes and buttons, the smartphone is equipped with linear motor-powered pressure-sensitive virtual buttons for power ON/OFF and volume up/down functions. The rear panel of the smartphone is made up of ceramic. There is also no SIM card slot on the device but it carries support for eSIM.

The company has dubbed the smartphone as “Exclusive Engineer Unit”, priced at $1,299, and is said to be handmade by Meizu’s engineers. This also raises a question related to the company’s ability to mass-produce this model. There’s also another version tagged “Exclusive Pioneering Unit” and with a $2,999 price tag but that version is sold out as just a single unit was available. The smartphone will be offered in Black and White color options.
