Huawei earlier today unveiled its latest flagship Honor Magic in a ceremony held in China. The Huawei Honor Magic features a spectacular design which is nothing like we have seen in the past. It is just beyond stunning. The device went up on its first flash sale in China and we can tell you that the Honor magic was sold out immediately it went up on sale.

There is no specific figure about the amount Huawei did put up for sale but the flagship device is reported to have sold out even faster than the Xiaomi Mi Mix. In all sincerity, the Honor Magic flooors the Mi Mix in design and features it packs on board.

For the avoidance of doubt, the Honor Magic sports a 5.09-inch AMOLED display with 2K resolution. The display is curved on all sides up front as well as at the back, giving the Honor Magic a unique look. The device also tag along the Kirin 950 chipset as well as 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage.The device supports NFC and has a fingerprint sensor embedded under the home button. There is a dual camera setup at the back sitting horizontally with the LED flash at the side. The device crams a 2900mAh battery onboard which is touted as being capable of achieving 90% charge in just 30 minutes.

The 3,699 Yuan price tag didn’t even deter the device from being sold out in seconds.  It is not known when the device will go on its second flash sale but we’ll keep you updated, as always, on that.

Chinese phonemakers have started to look beyond configurations in order to release smartphones that outwits competitors. In addition to high-end specifications, they, now focus on design, camera quality, and display type as well as other things which consumers fancy.

One area the domestic mobile phone companies in China seem to focus on is the migration to smartphones with a curved screen, similar to what Samsung did on the Galaxy S7 Edge. Already, the Vivo XPlay 5 has clinched the record as the first Chinese phone to get the curved screen design and reports indicate that Xiaomi, Huawei and Meizu are seriously working on their own curved screen smartphones.

According to analyst Kevin Wang, director of China Research at iSuppli, Huawei, Xiaomi, Meizu, Gionee as well as Oppo have all perfected plans to churn out smartphones using hyperboloid or curved display screen. The analyst in his Weibo post also listed the features of the curved display to include its difference from the flat screens found on most devices, the cost of developing the curved displays which in turn translates into more expensive smartphones.

Chinese phones are known to be very cheap, even when they are at par in terms of specs with their foreign counterparts like Apple and Samsung. With aspirations to compete on the global turf, it is important that their smartphones sell at prices which would enable them compete and even outwit the top smartphone brands.

It is in this regard that Xiaomi founder Lei Jun was reported to have visited Samsung during his first ever trip to South Korea to discuss with execs about its planned dual cameras, curved screen and even signal processors. The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 flagship which may be released before the end of this year is expected to adopt curved screen on one of the three rumored versions the device.

In the same regard, Meizu’s next flagship device which is rumored to feature its next generation Flyme 6.0 OS, will likely feature a curved screen as well. Huawei is also said to be sourcing curved screens from Korean companies, LG and Samsung. Gionee and Oppo who mostly sells their smartphones via offline sales channels are also working on curved screen displays which comes with better looks and therefore might attract more buyers. But it is yet to be seen how they hope to adopt the obviously more expensive curved display type and yet keep their phones affordable and post good profits.

As Xiaomi’s product lineup expands, its customers also are increasing rapidly. Despite having a lot of other products like wearables, air conditioners, water purifiers etc, the core of Xiaomi’s business has always been its smartphones. And the company releases at least one phone every quarter. This has significantly increased its fan base in the past couple of years, and it is now a well know brand in Asian countries like India and even in other continents.

Up till now, Xiaomi has been using IPS LCD displays for its flagship smartphones, but that may change in the future. According to Korean media, Xiaomi’s CEO, Lei Jun is reportedly visiting Seoul, South Korea for the first time, to meet Samsung Electronics executives. Meeting Samsung’s executives could be a good indicator of Xiaomi’s plans to partner with the South Korean company for supplying components to its smartphones.

According to the report, Xiaomi will be meeting Jeon Young-hyun, who is the president of Samsung’s memory chip division (smartphones). Along with Jeon, Lei Jun is also expected to meet other Samsung executives from the company’s Display department. Considering Samsung enjoys a major share (more than 90%) of the smartphone OLED market, there is a good chance that Lei Jun is visiting to talk about the possibly supply of OLED displays for the company’s smartphones.

We had seen reports about Chinese companies like Xiaomi, Huawei, and Vivo planning to release curved edge smartphones. Moreover, lately, we also have been hearing a lot about curved display smartphones from Xiaomi, like the Mi Note Edge. Given that Samsung leads the dual curved edge display market for smartphones, this meeting could be to talk about supplying curved displays for Xiaomi’s upcoming smartphones.

Lei Jun could even talk about the supply of Samsung’s Exynos chipsets for Xiaomi flagships. We have seen the Exynos family get better and better in the past couple of years and the Exynos 8990 is presently one of the best chips in the market. I am sure fans won’t mind seeing an Exynos powered Xiaomi flagship in the market.

We will have to wait and see whether how these two companies can work together to bring the latest technologies to Xiaomi smartphones in the future.

Lei Jun seems to have confirmed the development of a curved screen smartphone from the company earlier today. While this was a big news, he failed to give out further details about the device. But that didn’t stop a Weibo user from revealing the possible specs of the device.

When it comes to curved screen smartphones, Samsung is clearly the leader, having two major flagships in the market, namely the Galaxy S7 Edge and the Galaxy S6 Edge. But according to this new rumour, Xiaomi is reportedly going to use LG’s Curved Display panel on its curved screen smartphone. While the resolution of the device was not revealed, it is said the phone will feature a 5.7-inch OLED panel.

What’s more, the phone is said to come with a metal body, something that all major smartphones seem to feature these days. There will be a Snapdragon 823 chipset inside along with 6GB of RAM, and dual 12MP (or 13MP) rear cameras. As for the release date, don’t expect the phone to be launched anytime soon. It is said that LG’s Curved display panel is not yet available on a large scale, at least, in the short term. So, one can expect the phone to be released sometime in the Spring of 2017.

Well, these are just rumours for now, but there’s no doubt that curved display smartphones are going to be in plenty in the coming months. Vivo has already taken the plunge and released a dual edge curved display phone and according to earlier reports, a lot of Chinese phone makers are developing their own curved phones this year. This includes Huawei (said to be using Samsung’s panel) as well as Meizu (the curved phone was already leaked before).

There’s still plenty of time for the phone’s launch, so we can expect more details in the coming months.

We have been hearing from multiple sources that Chinese manufacturers like Xiaomi and Huawei are planning to release curved smartphones this year. Now, similar rumors have cropped up online in China revealing some more information about the company’s plans for the same. These Chinese handset makers are reportedly going to use curved displays supplied by South Korean rivals LG and Samsung.

So, when can we expect these curved phones to hit the market? According to the source, both Huawei and Xiaomi will release curved phones in September.

Xiaomi’s first curved smartphone could end up being called as the Mi Edge or the Mi Note edge. The company will reportedly use the curved display panel from LG and not from Samsung. We have already seen the company’s take on curved displays with the LG G Flex, however, the Flex series didn’t get anywhere near the attention as the Galaxy Edge lineup. While it is still unclear how Xiaomi might design the Mi Edge smartphone using LG’s flexible display panels, it is possible that the company might use a new shape of the curved screen.

Now, coming to the curved screen smartphone from Huawei, it is said that the device will be called as the Mate Edge. Huawei will use Samsung’s curved display panels, but we are not sure whether the phone would be dual edged. Whatever the case might be, don’t expect the phone to retail for cheap.

In fact, we do have an initial set of specs and pricing for both the devices. The Xiaomi Mi Edge phone is expected to feature Snapdragon 820 chipset under the hood with 4GB of RAM, and 16MP rear camera. The pricing will be competitive, around 3000 Yuan which comes to $462. On the other hand, the Mate Edge phone is rumored to come with the Kirin 950 chipset with 4GB of RAM and a much high price tag of 4000 Yuan which comes to $617.

September is still a good few months away, so expect more details in the coming months.
