If you were a smartphone enthusiast around the 2010s, Mediatek-powered Android smartphones had garnered a reputation back then for not having extended software support compared to Snapdragon-powered Android phones due to the more open access nature of Snapdragon chipsets for developers on Android at the time. In turn, you will see Snapdragon devices getting supported for up to 2 or 3 years compared to only 1 or 2 years on MediaTek devices back in the 2010s.

However, in 2023, it seems that Mediatek-powered Android flagships can match or even have longer software support than Snapdragon-powered flagships as one smartphone manufacturer demonstrated with their 2 flagship smartphones launched last month. That manufacturer is Xiaomi, with their Xiaomi 13T and Xiaomi 13T Pro.

The Xiaomi 13T and 13T Pro were launched on 26 September 2023 and Xiaomi has promised both models will receive 4 years of major Android OS updates and 5 years of Android security updates from the company. However, what’s interesting about the promise of updates are that it only applies to the Xiaomi 13T series and does not apply to the Xiaomi 13 series released earlier this year with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor.

For context, the Xiaomi 13T and 13T Pro are powered with MediaTek’s latest Dimensity 8200 Ultra and Dimensity 9200+ smartphones processors respectively. These two Dimensity processors are manufactured on TSMC’s industry-leading 4nm process which has a reputation of excellent power efficiency and high yields, the same process used in Apple’s A16 Bionic processor on the iPhone 15.

Meanwhile, the Xiaomi 13, Xiaomi 13 Pro and the Xiaomi 13 Ultra are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile processor, which is Qualcomm’s flagship offering this year. However, all three flagship models mentioned above are only promised to 3 years of major Android updates and 5 years of Android security updates. 

In short, this means that the earlier launched Xiaomi 13 series powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will receive one year less of major Android OS updates than the MediaTek-powered Xiaomi 13T and Xiaomi 13T Pro, debunking the myth of MediaTek devices receiving shorter years of software support than Snapdragon devices.

Xiaomi has recently unveiled its highly anticipated Civi 3 smartphone in China, following a series of teasing and anticipation. The device offers a harmonious blend of stunning visuals and impressive performance, boasting the cutting-edge Dimensity 8200-Ultra processor. Moving to the rear of the device, the Xiaomi Civi 3 showcases an eye-catching dual-tone aesthetic, offering users a choice of four delightful color variations: Rose Purple, Mint Green, Adventure Gold, and Coconut Ash. Situated in the top left corner, you’ll find a prominent camera module that houses all three lenses within it. Under the hood, the smartphone comes equipped with the recently launched MediaTek Dimensity 8200-Ultra chipset. For those unaware, this is an improved version of the Dimensity 8200 SoC, featuring faster CPU clock speeds, faster GPU clock speeds, and most importantly, support for both sub-6GHz and mmWave 5G bands.

To be precise, the Dimensity 8200-Ultra is based on TSMC’s N4 node and has an octa-core processor with one Cortex-X2 core clocked at up to 3.2 GHz, three Cortex-A78 cores clocked at up to 2.85 GHz, and four Cortex-A55 cores clocked at up to 2.0 GHz. It also features a Mali-G610 MC6 GPU, an IMG BXT 6E Gen 1 ISP, and a MediaTek APU 690 AI engine.

The Xiaomi Civi 3 offers users a choice between two RAM options. Opting for the 12GB RAM configuration provides LPDDR5 memory while selecting the 16GB RAM variant offers LPDDR5X memory. The device is available in three storage options, ranging from 256GB to 1TB of UFS 3.1 storage capacity. It operates on the Android 13-based MIUI 14.

The Xiaomi Civi 3 is equipped with a built-in 4500mAh lithium-ion polymer battery, which the brand claims can last for more than a day on a single charge. The device features a USB Type-C charging interface, supporting BC1.2, PD3.0, and PD2.0 charging protocols. With 67W fast-second charging, the Civi 3 can achieve a full 100% charge in just 38 minutes, ensuring quick and efficient charging capabilities. To keep the temperatures under control, Xiaomi has also incorporated a large 4000mm² stainless steel VC liquid cooling system.

For connectivity, the phone offers 5G, WIFI 6, and Bluetooth 5.3 with support for AAC / LDAC / LHDC. It also has NFC onboard along with Beidou GLONASS and AGNSS. The Xiaomi Civi 3 is equipped with a range of sensors, including an optical distance sensor, an ambient light sensor under the screen for color temperature detection, a rear light sensor, a flicker sensor, an acceleration sensor, a gyroscope, an electronic compass, a Z-axis linear motor, and an infrared remote control sensor, enabling various functionalities and enhanced user experience.

Camera

In terms of photography capabilities, the Xiaomi Civi 3 features a triple-camera setup on the rear. This setup comprises a 50MP Sony IMX800 sensor with an f/1.77 aperture, and optical image stabilization (OIS) support, ensuring sharp and stable captures. Alongside the 50MP lens, there is an 8MP ultra-wide camera with an f/2.2 aperture, expanding the field of view. Additionally, a 2MP macro lens is included for close-up shots. The primary camera is capable of recording videos in 4K 30fps, 1080p 30fps/60fps, and 720p 30fps.

On the front, the device sports a pill-shaped cutout housing a dual selfie camera setup. The primary lens is a 32MP shooter with an f/2.0 aperture and autofocus capability. The Xiaomi Civi 3 offers different models with varying RAM and internal storage configurations. The base model, featuring 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage, is priced at CNY 2,499 ($353). The 12GB RAM variant with 512GB of internal storage is available for CNY 2,699 ($382). Back in January, rumors emerged that the upcoming Xiaomi Civi 3 will feature the Dimensity 8200 chipset. The Dimsnity 8200 is a 5G SoC manufactured on TSMC’s 4nm process and powers smartphones like the Redmi K60e, Vivo V27 Pro, and Vivo S16 Pro. Now, Xiaomi has confirmed that the Civi 3 will come equipped with the Dimensity 8200 Ultra chipset, a custom variant of the Dimensity 8200.

The brand is yet to reveal the details about this custom chip. For context, the Dimensity 8200 features a total of eight cores, with one Cortex-A78 core clocked at up to 3.1 GHz, three Cortex-A78 cores clocked at up to 2.85 GHz, and four Cortex-A55 cores clocked at up to 2.0 GHz. It also has a Mali-G610 MC6 graphics processor. The Dimensity 8200 supports 5G connectivity with speeds up to 17 Gbps. It also supports Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.

Previous reports have mentioned that the upcoming Civi 3 smartphone is anticipated to retain the 6.55-inch OLED display with curved edges, reminiscent of its predecessor, the Civi 2.
