Disney+ Follows Netflix’s Lead with Account Sharing Restrictions! Deadline Announced

The number of digital content platforms has significantly increased in the past few years. With Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu, HBO Max, and Disney+, many of us to spend too much on just 1-2 series or movies that grabbed our interest.To save money, many have turned to sharing accounts with friends. However, Netflix recently cracked down on account sharing, boosting its user numbers and revenue. Now, Disney+ is following the footsteps of its biggest rival with a crackdown on password sharing starting March 14. Here are the details…

Disney+ Kills Account Sharing on March 14

Actually, it has been known for a while that Disney+ would put an end to account and password sharing. Although there hasn’t been an official announcement, the company was reported to be taking measures to address this issue. Unfortunately, a recent email sent to Hulu users, another digital content platform owned by The Walt Disney Company, has set a date for this unfavorable development. According to the email, Hulu is “adding limitations on sharing your account outside of your household.”

Certainly, upon reading the paragraph above, you might wonder, “Why would a Hulu email matter to Disney+ users?” However, our colleague at Ars Technica asked Disney about the situation, and the response was disappointing for users. Regrettably, starting March 14, Disney+ users can no longer share account passwords with friends or family in different households. Company officials stated they would provide more information to users soon.

Users sharing Disney+ account passwords cannot be identified at the moment. However, it is expected that a system similar to Netflix’s, which blocks account sharing for devices not connecting from the same household for a specific period, will be implemented. This decision is not without reason, as Disney+ has incurred an $11 billion loss since its launch in November 2019. The platform’s original content is expensive and not as popular as before, making it necessary for Disney to make such a decision. Whether this decision will yield positive results, similar to Netflix, will be revealed over time. For now, you can share your account freely until March 14th.

Reliance could spend billions to acquire Disney+Hotstar in India

Reliance is apparently planning on shelling out billions of dollars to acquire Disney+Hotstar in India. Recent rumors have hinted at Disney exiting the Indian market. For this, the company is also looking to sell its local assets and Reliance might be the buyer.

Reliance May Buy Out Disney+Hotstar

According to the previous report, Disney was in talks with Sun TV, Adani Group, and Reliance Industries for the potential acquisition. Now, the latest rumor hints that the deal could close soon with Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Group. The transaction would involve Reliance acquiring a major control stake in the business, although both parties are expected to be in the negotiation stage to decide the exact valuation for the deal.

While initial rumors claimed that Disney is looking to completely exit the Indian market, a Bloomberg report believes that the company only wants to sell a controlling stake rather than completely letting go of its Indian unit. The news from Bloomberg adds that Disney is near a multi-billion dollar deal with Reliance Industries. If this deal goes through, then a vast part of the Disney+Hotstar OTT platform, including its TV channels like Star Sports and Star Gold, could fall under Reliance.

Disney is reportedly asking for 10 billion US Dollars for Hotstar and Star India. However, Reliance isn’t agreeing with this evaluation, instead valuing it for around 7 to 8 billion US Dollars. Interestingly enough, the company acquiring Disney+Hotstar implies that the Ambani led group could gain control over the TV streaming rights of cricket in the Indian market. This is a big deal considering the immense popularity of the sport in the region.

Disney+ hikes prices & pushes back against account sharing

Disney+ is bringing some changes to its subscription service. The platform is planning to raise its prices while also fighting against the notorious account sharing that is rampant across any subscription-based model.

Disney+ follows Netflix’s footsteps

During its recent earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that the ad-free model of the Disney+ premium tier will see a price hike. Starting October 12, Disney+ will now cost 13.99 US Dollars over the current 10.99 US Dollars. Similarly, even Hulu is bumping the price of the ad-free tier to 17.99 US Dollars per month. But it’s not all bad news, the company is offering customers who are willing to bundle services.

A new Duo Premium subscription will roll out soon, which brings both ad-free tiers of Disney+ and Hulu for 19.99 US Dollars. Furthermore, it was also announced that the ad-enabled model will go live in Europe and Canada for just 8 US Dollars. Disney seems to be taking a page from Netflix’s playbook by cracking down on account sharing.

The company is working to fix this issue soon and is “actively exploring ways to address account sharing and the best options for paying subscribers to share their accounts with friends and family.” As per the announcement, these changes will likely go live sometime next year.

Netflix and every other video streaming platforms online have had their users indulge in the process of password sharing. But it seems like this practice might soon be turning illegal in the UK, as per recent piracy guidelines.

According to a new report, the act of sharing passwords for Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video might soon be considered illegal in the UK. The news arrives from an update piracy guidelines that were shared by the British Intellectual Property Office. These stated that the “password sharing on streaming services,” which includes a number of the popular platforms like Disney+, can legally be considered as an act that breaks the copyright law.

TorrentFreak reached out to the UPO for more details regarding the legality of password sharing, and got the following response: “There are a range of provisions in criminal and civil law which may be applicable in the case of password sharing where the intent is to allow a user to access copyright protected works without payment. These provisions may include breach of contractual terms, fraud or secondary copyright infringement depending on the circumstances”

In simpler terms, if you share your password for the account on Netflix, Disney+, and even Amazon Prime Video, you can be legally prosecuted for fraud or for breaching the copyright’s law.
