During the recent Lunar New Year celebration, China saw a familiar set of apps dominating the digital landscape. Giants like Tencent and ByteDance led the charge, capturing the attention and data usage of millions. As families gathered and friends reconnected, platforms such as Douyin (TikTok‘s Chinese counterpart), WeChat, Kuaishou, Tencent Video, and Jinri Toutiao became essential tools for communication and entertainment.

The apps accounted for over three-quarters of the mobile data traffic

These apps weren’t just popular; they were pivotal, accounting for over three-quarters of the mobile data traffic during the nine-day holiday. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) highlighted this trend, marking the first time it has released such rankings for the Lunar New Year period.

Tencent and ByteDance, with two entries each in the top five, showed their continued dominance in the market. Most of these platforms have been around for a decade or more, proving that established names still hold sway in China’s tech-savvy society. Douyin, the youngest among them, has quickly risen to prominence since its launch nearly eight years ago.

Interestingly, this year’s report contrasted with previous years’ trends, such as the surge in digital red packet transactions via Alipay in 2021 and JD.com’s significant sales growth in 2019. These shifts underscore the evolving digital habits of Chinese consumers.

Experts note the challenge of introducing breakthrough apps in a market crowded with seasoned players. Yet, the potential for innovation remains, particularly in areas like artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and extended reality technologies.

Amid these trends, apps are evolving. WeChat expands into short videos, while Douyin ambitiously eyes e-commerce growth, targeting a significant increase in its online shopping channel’s gross merchandise volume (GMV). This strategy includes competing on price, directly challenging platforms like Pinduoduo, known for their budget-friendly offerings.

Douyin to Stream FIFA 22 World Cup in 4K for Free in China

Earlier today (14th November 2022), Douyin, which is basically TikTok in China, officially announced that it will be streaming the FIFA 22 World Cup for free. The company announced that it will offer the popular football World Cup live broadcast on its platform for free, but it will exclusively be available in China.

For those unaware, the FIFA 2022 World Cup is taking place in Qatar and Douyin managed to win the rights to stream the FIFA World Cup earlier this year. So now, Douyin will basically cover the entire 28-day event and offer free live broadcasts of all games at Ultra HD (4K) resolution quality on its popular short video-sharing platform. Simply searching for the “World Cup” will have Douyin users enter a special dedicated page that lets you watch the World Cup games.

Apart from just streaming the FIFA games, Douyin will also be offering a number of features to make the experience of watching the stream more interactive. This includes letting users invite friends to chat while watching the game. The app will offer this by making a live broadcast room. Keep in mind that this free 4K stream is exclusive to the China Douyin app. Meaning, it won’t be available on the Douyin app that is available globally. Huawei teases upcoming laptops, will feature support for Android apps

Earlier today (9th September 2021), Huawei announced that it will be hosting a new event later this month on September 13. Now, the company even shared a new teaser for its upcoming laptops.

The Chinese tech giant is gearing up for the launch of new notebooks from its MateBook lineup of laptops and shared a teaser on its official Weibo account. On the Chinese microblogging website, an image poster can be seen that showcases a laptop from the side that acts as the hour and minute hands of a clock with the numbers being swapped with various different applications. However, these apps are based on the Android platform, so the company is clearly hinting at the new laptops supporting smartphone applications from Android.

Taking a look at these apps, it includes some of the most popular apps in China. This includes Douyin, which is basically a Chinese version of TikTok, along with an app that is similar to Yelp in the region called Dianping. Finally, we can also see the Himalayan Tingshu app as well, which is the Himalayan Podcast application. In other words, users will be the option use these applications on the laptop. While Windows 11 will bring support for Android apps, Microsoft will not be including this feature on launch. Meaning, Huawei is not simply shipping the laptops with the new Windows but is working on its own emulation based system or another new software that allows the use of these Android apps on Windows.

Recent reports have hinted at the company aiming on releasing new laptops called MateBook 13S and 14S, which are 13 and 14 inch notebooks. A Weibo tipster @北午数码鲲 stated that the 14 inch model can run Android applications thanks to Huawei’s self developed mobile application engine. TikTok has now seen over 1.5 billion downloads globally

Store Intelligence estimates published by Sensor Tower in March this year showed that ByteDance’s popular app TikTok also known as Duoyin in China had been downloaded more than one billion times globally as at February 2019. Sensor Tower has again released its latest Store Intelligence estimates and it shows that the short video app has been downloaded more than 1.5 billion times on Apple’s App Store and Google Play since release.That is over 500,000,000 downloads were recorded between February and now.

TikTok was first launched in China in September 2016 and was later introduced to the overseas market in 2017. It was ranked as the fourth most downloaded non-gaming app in the world last year, hitting 655.8 million unique installs. This year so far, the app has accumulated 614 million downloads which is 6 percent more than it had by the same point last year. At this pace, it will even surpass last years record number of installs.

The app is the third most popular app worldwide in the non-gaming category after WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger which have 707.4 million and 636.2 million installs so far this year, respectively. The data released also show that India accounted for the largest share of the 1.5 billion cumulative downloads, with 31% of all unique installs coming from the country. China came in second with an estimated 11.5% of all installs but that is for the Chinese version called Douyin. The figures could even be higher a it doesn’t include downloads from third-party Android stores which are popular among Android phone users in China.

TikTok is also popular in the US with approximately 8.2% of the 1.5 billion total downloads coming from the US. The growing popularity of the app in the US has not gone unnoticed by the authorities. The US congress is presently scrutinizing the app for potential privacy and national security risks.
