<p><a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/duckduckgo">DuckDuckGo</a>, the search engine known for its strong focus on user privacy, has launched DuckDuckGo AI Chat. This new service allows you to interact with powerful <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/generative-ai">generative AI </a>chatbots completely anonymously and for free.</p>

<h3>DuckDuckGo will remove any personal information from the queries</h3>

<p>This AI Chat acts as a middleman between you and the chatbots. You can ask questions or provide prompts, and DuckDuckGo AI Chat will route them to the appropriate chatbot (like <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/openai">OpenAI</a> <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/gpt-3.5">GPT-3.5</a> Turbo or Anthropic&#8217;s Claude 3 Haiku) while removing any personal information from your queries. The chatbots themselves will only see DuckDuckGo&#8217;s IP address, not yours, further protecting your anonymity.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="961" height="651" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/07fe93d1-f1a4-45a4-84f6-4b3c4f715cf3.webp?x96852" alt="" class="wp-image-630502" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/07fe93d1-f1a4-45a4-84f6-4b3c4f715cf3.webp 961w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/07fe93d1-f1a4-45a4-84f6-4b3c4f715cf3-300x203.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/07fe93d1-f1a4-45a4-84f6-4b3c4f715cf3-768x520.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/07fe93d1-f1a4-45a4-84f6-4b3c4f715cf3-696x471.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/07fe93d1-f1a4-45a4-84f6-4b3c4f715cf3-620x420.webp 620w" sizes="(max-width: 961px) 100vw, 961px" /></figure></div>

<p>While some chatbots might temporarily store your conversations, this one assures users that this data is deleted within 30 days and cannot be used to train or improve the AI models.</p>

<p>The service is free to use, but there&#8217;s a daily limit on the number of interactions to prevent abuse. Regular users shouldn&#8217;t encounter this limit during normal use. DuckDuckGo plans to expand the number of chatbots available in the future, offering you even more options to explore the capabilities of advanced AI and have anonymous conversations.</p>

<p>Google is in trouble with the US government. The US Justice Department is conducting an antitrust suit against the company. Accused of using its power and resources to overshadow competitors and create unfair competition, the company is backed into a corner by rivals like Microsoft. Of course, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/google/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Google</a> has denied the allegations and says that it will vigorously defend itself in court. </p>

<p>The outcome of the case is uncertain, but it seems the damage will be significant as the case continues to face new challenges. The latest information showed that <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/Apple/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple</a> considered switching private default search engine to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/DuckDuckGo/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DuckDuckGo</a> from Google. However, they rejected it due to the money coming from Google.</p>

<h2><strong>Apple Considered Switching Private Default Search Engine to DuckDuckGo, but Ultimately Rejected the Idea</strong></h2>

<p>The lawsuit filed by the US Justice Department against <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/google/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Google</a> has revealed many new details about the technologies we use every day. Court documents showed that in 2018, Apple had discussions with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/DuckDuckGo/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DuckDuckGo</a> to replace Google as the default search engine for private browsing mode in its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Safari/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Safari browser</a>.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="538" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/google-antitrust-suit-apple-safari-default-search-engine-duckduckgo-1024x538.jpg?x96852" alt="Duck duck Go" class="wp-image-572463" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/google-antitrust-suit-apple-safari-default-search-engine-duckduckgo-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/google-antitrust-suit-apple-safari-default-search-engine-duckduckgo-300x158.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/google-antitrust-suit-apple-safari-default-search-engine-duckduckgo-768x403.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/google-antitrust-suit-apple-safari-default-search-engine-duckduckgo-1536x806.jpg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/google-antitrust-suit-apple-safari-default-search-engine-duckduckgo-696x365.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/google-antitrust-suit-apple-safari-default-search-engine-duckduckgo-1068x561.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/google-antitrust-suit-apple-safari-default-search-engine-duckduckgo-800x420.jpg 800w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/google-antitrust-suit-apple-safari-default-search-engine-duckduckgo.jpg 1600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>The transcripts show that Apple executives were concerned about Google&#8217;s dominance in the search engine market and the potential privacy implications of its data collection practices. They also believed that DuckDuckGo&#8217;s privacy-focused approach could be a valuable addition to Safari&#8217;s private browsing mode.</p>

<p>However, Apple ultimately decided against switching to DuckDuckGo. The transcripts show that Apple executives were concerned about the quality of DuckDuckGo&#8217;s search results and its ability to handle the high volume of traffic that Safari generates. DuckDuckGo has long marketed itself as a more privacy-friendly alternative to Google. </p>

<p>It does not track its users&#8217; search history or target them with personalized ads. However, DuckDuckGo&#8217;s search results are not as comprehensive or accurate as Google&#8217;s. The company has not publicly commented on the matter. However, it is possible that Apple was concerned about the potential impact on its revenue. Google pays Apple billions of dollars each year to be the default search engine on Safari. This was also the reason the case started in the first place.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/microsoft/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Microsoft</a> is reportedly cracking down on Bing-powered search engines that are using its search data to power their AI chatbots. According to a report from Bloomberg, the tech giant has informed two unnamed search engines that if they continue to use Bing&#8217;s search data with their AI tools, Microsoft will restrict their access to the data altogether. This move by Microsoft is seen as an attempt to make its search data exclusive to Bing&#8217;s chatbot, which is powered by <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/03/14/gpt-4-aces-professional-exams/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">OpenAI&#8217;s GPT-4</a> language model and can answer questions, create summaries, generate code, and write social media posts.</p>

<p>While Microsoft licenses out Bing&#8217;s search data to several search engines, including <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/duckduckgo/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DuckDuckGo</a>, Yahoo, and You.com, it apparently draws the line at using its data in AI chatbots, which it views as a violation of its contract. Sources close to the situation claim that Microsoft may choose to terminate its agreements with the search engines accused of misusing the information.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="768" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/microsoft-1-1024x768.jpg?x96852" alt="Microsoft" class="wp-image-525262" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/microsoft-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/microsoft-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/microsoft-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/microsoft-1-696x522.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/microsoft-1-1068x801.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/microsoft-1-560x420.jpg 560w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/microsoft-1-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/microsoft-1-265x198.jpg 265w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/microsoft-1.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Although it&#8217;s unclear which search engines Bloomberg is referring to in its report, it&#8217;s worth noting that DuckDuckGo recently launched a tool called <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/03/09/duckduckgo-chatgpt-powered-duckassist/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DuckAssist</a> that provides AI-generated summaries for certain searches, while You.com and Neeva both offer AI-powered tools that generate annotated summaries and provide answers to users&#8217; questions. Microsoft&#8217;s decision to restrict Bing&#8217;s search data for use in AI chatbots could impact the functionality and capabilities of these search engines&#8217; chatbots.</p>

<p>This crackdown by Microsoft is significant because it highlights the increasing importance of AI chatbots in the search engine landscape. With more companies like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/02/07/google-bard-ai-technology-rival-chatgpt/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Google introducing</a> their own takes on OpenAI&#8217;s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/chatgpt/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ChatGPT</a> chatbot, there is a growing demand for access to high-quality search data to power these tools. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/microsoft/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Microsoft&#8217;s</a> decision to restrict access to its search data could potentially put it at a competitive advantage, as it seeks to make its chatbot stand out in a crowded marketplace.</p>

<p>This move could also have implications for the wider AI industry. It remains to be seen how this situation will unfold, but it underscores the importance of access to high-quality data in the development of AI technologies.</p>

<p>ChatGPT taking internet by storm, as the artificial intelligence is being used in many different services. Recently, it was integrated into Bing and other Microsoft services, which brought great success to the company and caused a rise in the search engine&#8217;s popularity. Now, DuckDuckGo, another search engine, is following suit by releasing its own ChatGPT-powered search tool, DuckAssist. Here are the details&#8230;</p>

<h2><strong>DuckAssist: DuckDuckGo&#8217;s New ChatGPT Based AI Search Feature</strong></h2>

<p>DuckDuckGo has released a new tool called DuckAssist. It uses artificial intelligence (AI) technology called ChatGPT to give users quick and accurate answers to their search queries. The answers are gathered from websites like Wikipedia and presented in a way that looks similar to regular search results.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/duckduckgo-chatgpt-powered-duckassist-1024x576.webp?x96852" alt="DuckDuckGo DuckAssist" class="wp-image-521193" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/duckduckgo-chatgpt-powered-duckassist-1024x576.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/duckduckgo-chatgpt-powered-duckassist-300x169.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/duckduckgo-chatgpt-powered-duckassist-768x432.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/duckduckgo-chatgpt-powered-duckassist-696x392.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/duckduckgo-chatgpt-powered-duckassist-1068x601.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/duckduckgo-chatgpt-powered-duckassist-747x420.webp 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/duckduckgo-chatgpt-powered-duckassist.webp 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>First of all, we must warn that <strong>DuckAssist isn&#8217;t a chatbot</strong>, so users don&#8217;t need to talk to it. Instead, it shows users an automatic answer when it recognizes a question it can answer. This feature will be especially useful for straightforward questions like &#8220;What is a search engine index?&#8221; and others that have simple, factual answers. The ChatGPT-powered tool is currently in beta and is free to use on the DuckDuckGo app and browser extension.</p>

<p>DuckDuckGo is committed to keeping users&#8217; data private, and DuckAssist is no exception. It won&#8217;t collect any personal information or require users to log in. The company also plans to keep users&#8217; search and browsing history anonymous when sharing data with its partners, OpenAI and Anthropic, who helped develop the ChatGPT technology.</p>

<p>If DuckAssist proves to be popular, DuckDuckGo plans to roll it out to everyone using the search tool on its website. Users can also provide feedback on the AI-generated answers anonymously, which will help the company improve the tool.</p>

Google will soon start offering Android users alternatives to its own search engine in the form of a choice screen that will appear on their phones.</p>
<p>The “choice screen” is being introduced by Google following an antitrust ruling from the European Union last March. Google was fined a record $5 billion by EU regulators, who said the company had to stop “illegally tying” its search engine and browser to its mobile OS. As a result, Google has done a blind auction for three alternative search engines in each market.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>EDITOR’S PICK: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/01/08/top-10-coolest-products-of-ces-2020/">Top 10 coolest products of CES 2020</a></strong></h6>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-300060" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/search-engines.jpg?x96852" alt="" width="607" height="324" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/search-engines.jpg 607w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/search-engines-300x160.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 607px) 100vw, 607px" /></p>
<p>In this blind auction, search providers that met Google’s criteria provide “the price that they are willing to pay each time a user selects them from the choice screen in the given country.” A minimum bid was set for each country and the three highest bidders for each market will appear during setup on Android phones in that country.</p>
<p>As a result, DuckDuckGo will be one of three alternative search engines offered by Google during new Android phone setups in every European country, while Bing will be an option only in the U.K. However, given that this was a closed auction process, it’s difficult to know which search providers applied for inclusion in which markets. You can see the full list <a href="https://www.android.com/choicescreen-winners/">here</a>.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-300059" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/duckduckgo-wallpaper-1200_red.png?x96852" alt="" width="780" height="408" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/duckduckgo-wallpaper-1200_red.png 780w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/duckduckgo-wallpaper-1200_red-300x157.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/duckduckgo-wallpaper-1200_red-768x402.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/duckduckgo-wallpaper-1200_red-696x364.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 780px) 100vw, 780px" /></p>
<p>This auction hasn&#8217;t gone without its fair share of critcism however. Search engine Ecosia, which uses its profits to plant trees in areas of deforestation, <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-51048412">told BBC News</a> it had boycotted the process altogether. Chief executive Christian Kroll said: &#8220;We believe this auction is at odds with the spirit of the July 2018 EU Commission ruling.</p>
<p>&#8220;Internet users deserve a free choice over which search engine they use and the response of Google with this auction is an affront to our right to a free, open and federated internet. Why is Google able to pick and choose who gets default status on Android?&#8221;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-300057" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/ecosia.jpg?x96852" alt="" width="760" height="428" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/ecosia.jpg 760w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/ecosia-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/ecosia-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/ecosia-746x420.jpg 746w" sizes="(max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px" /></p>
<p>Ecosia is also already planning to raise its concerns with European regulators. “Now that this process has come to a conclusion, we’ll raise our broader concerns over Google’s monopolistic behaviour with European Union legislators — we’ll also look at other ways to work with regulators to challenge this result,” claimed Kroll.</p>
