Huawei may have done a technological breakthrough in the battery field, revealing that it will be upgrading the battery of its upcoming foldable smartphone, which is rumored to be the Mate X3. According to Digital Chat Station, a well-known tipster, Huawei will use high-silicon anode material to enhance the battery capacity to 5060mAh (typical value).

The new foldable smartphone will feature a larger screen, which will require a better battery life. Currently, the industry is facing limitations in terms of improving the cathode material energy density of mobile phone batteries. Huawei’s breakthrough in the battery field will offer better energy density and a larger battery capacity.

Huawei Mate X2

However, the high-silicon anode batteries used in Huawei’s new mobile phone presented some technical difficulties. They have a large volume expansion coefficient, low first charge and discharge efficiency, and high resistivity. Huawei has overcome these challenges by using carbon-coated structures and innovative flexible polymer binders to inhibit expansion and shedding.

In addition, Huawei has incorporated the use of lithium foil to supplement lithium, which has increased the efficiency of the first charge and discharge by 26%. The company has also utilized carbon nanotube technology in silicon anode batteries, which has improved the conductivity by four times and enhanced the performance of the silicon anode batteries.

The use of high-silicon anode batteries in the upcoming folding screen mobile phone will result in higher energy density, larger battery capacity, and a 21% increase in energy density compared to traditional graphite anode materials. Huawei has also incorporated AI parallel power management, 15-layer security protection, and intelligent charging management to ensure higher charging efficiency and safer charging.

According to a report released by CINNO Research, the sales of folding screen phones in China saw a significant year-on-year growth of 54% in January 2023, with a continued double-digit growth trend. This comes after the sales of folding screen phones in China reached 2.83 million units in 2022, showing a remarkable increase of 144.4% year-on-year.

OPPO has emerged as the market leader in China’s folding screen phone market, capturing a 30% market share in January 2023, up by 22.1%. This growth is attributed to the strong performance of OPPO’s Find N2 and Find N2 Flip models, with their folding phone penetration rate increasing to nearly 4%, up by 3%.

Meanwhile, Huawei’s market share dropped by 33.2% year-on-year to 25.7%, with the company’s dominance in the folding phone market being challenged by the emergence of new players and the launch of more new products. This has led to the gradual formation of a “tripod” market pattern, with OPPO, Samsung, and Huawei occupying the top three spots in terms of market share.

Samsung’s market share remained stable at 23.2%, with its strategy of flooding the Chinese market with a large number of devices helping to maintain its position. Honor saw the most significant growth, with its market share increasing by 9.8% year-on-year to 12.8%, thanks to the success of its new generation of folding models, Magic V.

In terms of folding screen forms, the vertical folding form accounted for 42% of China’s folding phone sales in January 2023, a year-on-year increase of 2%. In terms of price, the sales of folding screen phones above 15,000 CNY accounted for 12% of the market, a sharp drop of 26% year-on-year.

Overall, this report highlights the continued growth and competitiveness of China’s folding screen phone market, with OPPO leading the pack and challenging Huawei’s dominance. It also reveals an interesting shift in the pricing of folding screen phones, with more sales occurring in the mid-range price bracket.

Just when you think that Samsung’s folding phones have reached a pinnacle, their new innovations raise expectations for future launches. The company’s flagship folding device, the Galaxy Z Fold 4, was released in August 2022. It showcases an improved version of their folding screen technology. At CES 2023, Samsung Display showed off a new prototype display and hinge that can rotate 360 degrees.

The ‘Flex In & Out’ display will allow the user to fold the display both inward and outward, which implies that the hinge will have an entirely different design. As per reports, the crease created by such a display will be subtler as compared to the current folding screen technology. The hinge design, also referred to as a ‘water-drop hinge’, will allow the display to form a looser shape while folded inward. It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time Samsung has unveiled a ‘Flex In & Out’ display at an event. The company previously showcased a similar display in Korea in the year 2021. Where the new display can fold both inward and outward, the older display can only be folded like an “S” with segments.

The new 360-degree folding display could make its way onto the next iteration of Galaxy Fold devices, the Galaxy Z Fold 5, which is expected to launch later this year alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 5. The incorporation of the new hinge would also mean that the fold crease would be subtle as compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 4. Only time will tell if Samsung can maintain its grip in the future, since the company’s Z series smartphones are practically leading the folding device market worldwide.

They have an extremely strong lineup of devices, from budget devices, to mid-rangers, to top-of-the-line flagships. But despite all this, the company has yet to introduce to a proper Xiaomi folding phone.

While Xiaomi does technically have the Mi Mix Alpha, that’s a completely different type of device that doesn’t have the typical features of a folding phone. Some have even been questioning whether we’ll even see a folding phone from the company. Well, today we’ve have gotten a glimpse at some patents for such a device courtesy of LetsGoDigital.

EDITOR’S PICK: Xiaomi could lose top spot in India in 2020, but not to Samsung

Halfway through 2018, Xiaomi filed a design patent for a pull-out phone with a side bar. The documentation was approved and only recently published on December 6, 2019. There are some product images included where a device is shown that can be pulled into a tablet format. It’s a very interesting take on a folding phone, which we’ve seen before.

If you remember from last month, we saw a very similar design patented by LG where the device unrolled like a scroll from a small form factor into tablet-sized device. Unlike LG’s solution however, Xiaomi’s patent seems a lot more robust. In fact, Xiaomi’s device looks like it could legitimately take form and isn’t just a plain and obvious concept.

The Xiaomi version of an extendable device begins as a normal sized smartphone, which can then be pulled to the left to extend further. The camera module on the back seems to sit on what will be the pull tab, while the front cameras sit on a side bar akin to the current back camera situation on the Mi Mix Alpha. It’s definitely a good concept device.

Unfortunately, lots of patents get approved yet amount to nothing. A good example is the LG folding phone we just shared, which still has had no presence in any LG release. It’s a shame, but chances are we’re not going to see anything like this launch, at least not for the next few years. We’re definitely excited for the idea however, and we can’t wait to see someone actually attempt it.

Yesterday, their patent for a specially designed foldable phone was approved. The device bears resemblance to the Samsung Galaxy Fold, but with a Z-Fold folding system.

LG’s patent shows a Z-fold device, and as one of the images here shows, the third screen is a stand-alone unit and appears to fold back onto the front surface of the smartphone. The design would give a full front screen that looks pretty much like all the smartphones we are used to seeing today that can unfold into a device that has a screen three times as wide when needed.

The design patent was filed in China on 6th March 2019, and included 18 sketches of a rectangular-shaped folding device with two displays; one of which is a flexible screen. The smartphone unfolds according to the Z-Fold principle, which is also used in brochures for the retail trade. After you unfold the phone, you’ll see a flexible screen which is twice the length of a regular screen and folds open in width like a tablet. These images omit any ports, USB included, where one might expect to find them. There is a series of symmetrical small holes along one edge that could be for speakers, but that is it. Therefore, it appears that LG intends to go fully wireless for this potential foldable phone – a risky strategy that has worked out poorly for other OEMs in the past.

Seeing something even remotely similar to the Z-FOLD in actual physical form from LG is pretty unlikely in the near future. Still, there are plenty of great ideas to improve on contemporary foldable display smartphones worth exploring here, and we look forward to seeing LG progress this idea further.

They had a prototype shown off a couple of months back, but the company’s been quiet about it ever since. That was at least until earlier today, with sources claiming that Sharp has begun work with fellow Japanese company JDI to begin work on developing a foldable smartphone.

This actually comes as a bit of a surprise since we had originally heard that Sharp was working with Samsung on their folding phone, though it also makes sense that they chose JDI instead. Japanese companies usually avoid working with Korea due to the ever intensifying Japan-South Korea trade war, and Sharp themselves rarely work with companies outside of their home country when it comes to their own products.

JDI is a seasoned veteran when it comes to mobile phone display production, though they have a heavy emphasis on LCDs over OLED displays. They’ve certainly produced OLED displays in the past, but it has never been one of their main selling points before. What this could mean is that Sharp’s folding phone will come with an LCD instead of the standard OLED.

Sharp isn’t exactly a big name when it comes to the smartphone market, but what they do have tends to be very solid when it comes to build and performance. We’re certainly looking forward to their inevitable folding phone, regardless of when it arrives or who makes the display. For now, stay tuned on Gizmochina.com for any updates on the matter.

Unlike the Galaxy Fold, the Huawei Mate X simply looks much sleeker, and it’s also more robust looking than the Royole Flexpai. Thus, it makes sense that Huawei wants to ensure that image remains once the device actually launches. To that end, they’ve delayed the release of the Mate X to optimize it further before launch.

According to the company, the Huawei Mate X still needs some time in the oven. It’s highly likely they want to avoid another Samsung Galaxy Fold situation, which makes sense. The last thing the company wants to do is drag down the concept of foldable phones further, especially considering Huawei’s current situation and reputation. Any poor decisions could lead to some really bad results.

Editor’s Pick: Honor’s Smart Screen will have a 55-inch Display with a Pop-Up Camera

He Gang, head of Huawei’s mobile division, tells us that Huawei have invested heavily when it comes to the Huawei Mate X. They aren’t concerned with pushing the device out quickly, instead adopting a “it’s done when it’s done” approach to the issue. The main focus is to make sure the device meets consumer expectations, though that’s a pretty high hurdle to get over.

As of right now, the Huawei Mate X has already passed all required certifications to launch, so we’re mainly just waiting on Huawei to get it right. It’s good to see that Huawei are really taking their time with this device, don’t want to end up with folding phones as a dead concept just yet. It’d be a huge shame to have such an interesting concept go down the drain due to rushed development.

According to LetsGoDigital, the company has just filed a new patent for a foldable smartphone. What makes Sony’s approach unique however is that the patent shows all the common smartphone sensors crammed in the screen, unlike other approaches.

The new foldable smartphone patent from Sony shows a flexible display on the front and back with a pressure sensor, acceleration sensor, and temperature sensor. The company also believes they can have other sensors such as a photosensor and a resistance sensor could also be added to the display. These allow the device to find out how the user is holding their device, which by extension allow the UI to adapt to the user’s holding habits.

The front and rear sides would have transparent displays, and the smartphone itself would fold together in a curved state. This means it’s unlike Samsung’s approach which involves two displays on the inside and outside of the fold. The company has opted for the display to only be on the outside, which firmly places it in the Huawei Mate X school of folding phones.

There’s no word on when Sony will launch its foldable smartphone or if we’ll even ever see this as a Sony folding phone. But it seems like Samsung and Huawei are pushing forward into the foldable phone sector, and it makes sense that Sony would want to dip in too. Don’t want to be late to the party and need to contend with companies like Xiaomi.
