Samsung, through a press release, announced that the Samsung Health Monitor app will now be available across 31 more countries. For the unware, users of Samsung should install this App on both their Smartphones and Wearables. Using this, they can avail the Blood pressure and Electrocardiogram(ECG) tracking feature.

First off, the above-mentioned features will be available for 28 new European countries, in addition to Chile, Indonesia, and the UAE. The rollout will be a staged process starting from February 4.

Samsung says that it is able to expand to EU nations after receiving the CE-marking in December 2020. This marking is for complying with health, safety, and environmental protection standards within European Economic Area(EEA).

Hence, the Samsung Health Monitor App will now enable the features in the 28 European countries as follows: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK.

Talking about the features, the Heartrate monitoring sensors use the pulse wave analysis to track the Blood Pressure of the users. The difference between the calibration value and the change in blood pressure will show the result.

As for ECG, the Galaxy Watch 3 / Watch Active2 have a dedicated sensor to study the heart’s electrical activity. Any inconsistent results are interpolated to show if the person is having the risk of Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) and duly notified.

To measure, rest your forearm on a flat surface and place a fingertip from the opposite hand on the top button on the smartwatch for 30 seconds. You can also watch the tutorial videos of Blood Pressure and ECG to get an idea.

Evan Blass, (via a Voice Post) says Samsung will launch a new Rose Gold variant of the Galaxy Watch Active 2 next month. And as the date on Watch face suggests, the launch could be on January 14. This is the date when the company is expected to unveil the flagship Galaxy S21 series.

A picture courtesy of Evan shows the Watch Active2 in Rose Gold base. The strap on the image looks to be in Purple color. To recall, the wearable is already selling in Pink Gold along with Black, Silver color options. That said, we are as surprised as you in hearing the news as Samsung has already launched an improved Galaxy Watch 3 back in August.

EDITOR’S PICK: Samsung showcases its NEON artificial humans’ role in banking in the future

One of the reasons Samsung could bring this is just for the sake of launching a wearable at the unpacked event. Or maybe to leverage a bit more on the already booming wearable market in multiple countries whilst not undermining the sales of Watch 3. Either way, looks like the Watch Active 2 will make its appearance again and launch alongside the Galaxy S21 series, Galaxy Buds Pro TWS.

Needless to say that Samsung has been updating its Watches constantly. Back in April, it brought a new Health Monitor App support which eventually made its way to Watch Active 2. Recently, the company also brought VO2 max measurement for endurance and Smart reply features.

Hence, even if it re-launches a year and a half later in 2021, users shouldn’t be wary of it being outdated. The Galaxy Watch Active 2 features a 1.2-inch(40mm), 1.4-inch(44mm) sAMOLED round display, Exynos 9110 dual-core chipset, 768MB of RAM. It also has Bluetooth/4G and Aluminum/Stainless-steel variant and supports ECG measurement, 39 workout modes, and more.

The wearables arrive from the company’s Made in India initiative which had it make a significant investment within the country.

Earlier today (9th July 2020), Samsung launched its aluminum Galaxy Watch Active 2 4G in India. It is the first smartwatch that the company has manufactured in its facility in the region. So, we can expect smartwatches to be sold in India from this facility for the foreseeable future. Notably, the smartwatch had already been launched about 7 months ago.

Under the hood, it has an eSIM that supports local telecom operators like Airtel and Ji. The LTE variant is only available in 44mm and will be sold in Cloud Silver, Aqua Black, and Pink Gold color variants. For those interested, you can pick up the smartwatch in its aluminum finish from 11th July 2020. It will be available through Samsung’s retail network, Samsung Opera House, Samsung.com, and other online retailers for 28,490 INR (roughly 380 US Dollars).

Although, it remains to be seen just how well the smartwatch performs in the market, especially during this time of crisis. Furthermore, with Samsung gearing up for the Galaxy Watch 3‘s launch arriving next month, that might also cut into its own product’s customer base.

However, the device lacked support for blood pressure monitoring, which is now being rolled out.

A couple of months ago, Samsung had announced that the blood pressure monitoring support will be added as the feature and now it is being rolled out as it was cleared by the South Korean drug safety agency to measure blood pressure.

Today, the South Korean giant has finally started rolling out the blood pressure monitoring support to the Galaxy Watch Active 2 devices in South Korea. With this, users will now be able to measure and track their blood pressure. The company has also launched the Health Monitor application.

To get started with blood pressure monitoring, users will first need to calibrate their watch using a traditional cuff-style blood pressure monitoring equipment. Then, they can use the Galaxy Watch Active 2’s pulse wave analysis for measuring blood pressure.

The application needs to be installed on both the devices — the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 and the smartphone connected to it. Blood pressure readings are synced to the app and users can track it by days, weeks, and months, and can also share the data with their doctor or health professionals for consultation.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 comes in two sizes — 40mm and 44mm. It features an S-AMOLED display that supports 360 x 360 pixels resolution. The 40mm device has a 1.2-inch display whereas the 44mm model is fitted with a 1.4-inch screen.

It is an IP68 rated and MIL-STD 810G rated water-resistant and dustproof device that can remain unaffected from harsh climatic conditions. The device offers 39 workout options with different categories. It features an improved optical heart rate tracker with 8 LEDs for faster readings and also comes with an electrocardiogram (ECG).

It runs Tizen OS with One UI which also allows users to create a customized watch that matches the clothes of the user. Under the hood, it is powered by Exynos 9110 chipset along with 768MB of RAM. However, the LTE supported premium stainless steel edition of the smartwatch has 1.5 GB of RAM.

As for the pricing, the 40mm aluminum edition of the Watch Active 2 is priced at $279 and the 44mm variant carries a price tag of $299.

It is a perfect bundle of Samsung’s best phone and its best wearables.

Samsung is marketing the Galaxy 10th Anniversary Premium Package as a great holiday gift for your loved ones. There is no price tag yet but it will be available in select markets this November. We hope the price is lesser compared to when bought separately.

Samsung says this should come in handy during the holidays when viewing photos or watching a video or movie.

Out of all the units sold, the Apple Watch accounted for 6.8 million units making it the most popular smartwatch. In comparison to Q3 of 2018, when Apple sold 4.5 million, the sales of its smartwatches in Q3 of the current year grew an astounding 51 percent. Correspondingly, the Apple Watch lineup single-handedly accounts for almost half of the market share.

Other leading manufacturers in this segment include Samsung and Fitbit. The South Korean Electronics giant shipped 1.9 million smartwatches worldwide in Q3 of 2019, almost doubling from 1.1 million a year ago. Speaking of its market share, it jumped from 11 percent last year to 13 percent in the current year, making it the second-largest manufacturer of smartwatches. One of the most selling models from the company is the Galaxy Watch Active 2 which is expected to boost sales even further in the forthcoming festive season.

Closely followed by Samsung is Fitbit which sold 1.6 million smartwatches worldwide in Q3 of 2019, growing slightly from 1.5 million a year ago. Despite the growth in sales, it’s market share fell to 11 percent from 15 percent in the third quarter of the preceding year. “Fitbit continues to underperform in the smartwatch industry average, however, its recent takeover by Google could provide it with some relief and increased market share,” said Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics.

Some readers might be surprised as Xiaomi seems out of sight in this report, however, it is hidden in the other segment. Noteworthy, it is one of the largest manufacturers of smart bands which happens to be a smart wearable and not a smartwatch in particular. Having said that, the company has recently launched its first smartwatch, dubbed the Mi Watch, it starts at Yuan 1299 and is packed with features. This device ticks almost every box that consumers in the budget and mid-range segment look for, therefore, Xiaomi is assumed to make a significant mark in smartwatch sales report in the coming quarters.

Design and Display

Xiaomi’s Mi Watch draws a lot of design inspiration from the immensely popular Apple Watch Series 5. Both of these devices sport a 1.78-inch square-shaped display with a ceramic back. In contrast, the Galaxy Watch Active 2 and Huawei Watch GT 2 have a round-shaped display that measures 1.4 inch and 1.39 inch respectively. Consumers who prefer a smartwatch that is not very distinguishable from a conventional wristwatch can choose either of these two.

Chipset, Software and Features

Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 – 40mm Aluminum

The newly launched Mi is equipped with the Snapdragon 3100 series SoC which is developed by Qualcomm. Rest of the three smartwatches in this comparison pack a chip that is developed in-house by their respective manufacturers. In terms of OS, the Mi Watch and Apple Watch Series 5 have MIUI based on Google WearOS and Apple’s WatchOS, both of which can be navigated via a crown and multifunction buttons which are mounted on the sides of the two devices.

The Galaxy Watch Active 2 runs on Samsung’s WearableOS 4.0 which is based on top of Tizen. Finally, the Huwaei Watch GT2 has a custom OS which has a very vanilla feel and looks similar to stock WearOS from Google.

All of these smartwatches support fitness tracking features like step counter, sleep tracker, and can display notifications from the smartphone. The Apple Watch and Galaxy Watch Active 2 support ECG functionality. Whereas one distinguishing feature of the Mi Watch is its SpO2 sensor which can be used to measure oxygen in the blood.

Battery

In terms of battery, the Mi Watch which is the most affordable smartwatch out of the bunch packs the largest battery which is rated at 570 mAh. In contrast, most expensive out of the pack, the Apple Watch Series 4 has the smallest battery which is rated at 296 mAh. The Huawei Watch GT 2 and the Galaxy Watch Active 2 are also equipped with decent sized batteries which are rated at 455 mAh and 340 mAh respectively.

The non-cellular variant of the Apple Watch Series 5 (44mm) starts from $ 429 while the 4G enabled variant starts at $ 529. However, with premium strap options, it goes all the way upto $ 1399. The Mi Watch is currently limited to China and it is offered in two variants which includes standard and premium. The affordable variant costs Yuan 1299 (~$ 185) while the top of the line variant costs Yuan 1999 (~$ 257). Cheerfully, innards of both the variants remain the same but the premium variant has a stainless steel strap, sapphire glass protection, and a stainless-steel frame.

The Galaxy Watch Active 2 (44 mm) starts at $ 299 for the non-cellular variant, whereas the variant with 4G is priced at $ 449. Last but not least, the Huawei Watch GT 2 is offered in just one variant that skips on 4G and it costs Euro 249 which roughly translates to $ 277.

All of these smartwatches have their own USP’s but the Mi Watch from Xiaomi seems like the most value for money offering in this competition. All in all, the support for e-sim, a large battery and a swift chipset makes it a praiseworthy product which the Chinese corporation has managed to price aggressively.

Both products will launch before the Galaxy Note10 unpacked event but on separate dates. The launch date for the Galaxy Tab S6 is tomorrow, 31st of July while the launch date for the Galaxy Watch Active 2 is the 5th of August. The Galaxy Note10 launches on August 7 in New York.

Samsung also released a teaser video for both the Tab S6 and the Watch Active 2. An official press release reveals that both products will be unveiled on the official Galaxy website on both days.

The Galaxy Tab S6 will come with a Snapdragon 855 processor, a new stylus that attaches to the back of the tablet, and will also be Samsung’s first tablet with dual rear cameras. Unfortunately, there won’t be an LED flash on the back, which means you won’t be able to use it to take pictures in the dark.

The Watch Active 2 will have a touch-sensitive bezel that you will be able to use to control the device. It will also connect via Bluetooth 5.0 which has a longer range and faster speed.
