Huawei’s partnership with Google dated back to the days of the Nexus smartphones and that partnership gave birth to the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X. Curiously that was where trouble started brewing.

According to insider sources who were allegedly familiar with Huawei’s operatons who spoke with Android Police, Google promised Huawei when the Chinese smartphone maker was brought in to make the Nexus 6P, that the smartphone would be sold by all four US carriers. The reports indicated that Huawei who had been looking for an opportunity to enter the lucrative US market, immediately bought into the project and had specifically mentioned that they want the phones to be sold by Verizon, perhaps because Verizon rank as largest or second largest carrier in the US. However, that didn’t materialize and the Huawei-manufactured Nexus 6P and 5X ended up not being sold by any of the mobile carriers in the US.

Apart from that, Android Police reports that the insider sources also hinted that Google had also agreed terms with Huawei for both parties to spend hundreds of dollars to advertise the Nexus 6P but obviously that won’t work out since talks with the carriers didn’t work out. The US smartphone market is one that is very much carrier-dependent.

That seem not to have ended both giant’s affinity for each other, as Google was said to have approached Huawei not long after the launch of the Nexus 5X and 6P, unveiling its plans for the year’s portfolio. Google was said to have indicated interest in having Huawei build the Pixel phones but with a stringent condition attached. This condition was said to have led to the collapse of talks an what is it? Trns out Google wanted the phones to carry only Google’s logo without any recognition going to Huawei as the manufacturer. Huawei, according to the source, wanted none of that and taht immeddiately ended talks between both parties. Quite ironically, both smartphones would be sold by all four US mobile carriers just as Huawei had wanted but unfortunately the Pixel and Pixel XL are both HTC-manufactured.

Related: Huawei said to be working on a 7-inch Google Tablet to be Released soon

Huawei and Google are still potential partners, though, recall they were rumored to be working on a tablet and Google is reported to have contacted Huawei again among other companies, to build a mid-range device which may likely drop mid-2017.

This wasn’t surprising because, in the past couple of years, the company has really stepped up its smartphone game, releasing some pretty interesting phones. And the Nexus 6P was no exception, being one of the best devices of last year. The phone came with powerful hardware as well as fluid stock software to make sure that the overall experience was top notch.

While we are not entirely sure whether Huawei will continue as the Nexus maker for the second consecutive year, a trademark for “Nexus 7P” has surfaced online. This could be an indication that the company will be partnering up with Google for a new Nexus device.

Now, the Nexus 7P could be a new smartphone, going forward with last year’s naming scheme, or it could be a tablet. It has been a good three years since we saw an update to the Nexus 7 2013 tablet, which was very popular back then. Hence, a powerful tablet from the Chinese company would not be a bad idea. The description in the trademark application most likely hints at a mobile device, but we can’t be sure of that. Also, just because Huawei has trademarked the name “Nexus 7P” it does not confirm that such a device exists. We have seen time and again many patents and trademarks do not materialize into anything. So, we better not get too excited until we receive more details.

So, what do you think about a Huawei made Nexus 7P tablet? Would it be something that would attract your attention?

It looks like one of the Nexus devices just made an entry in the AnTuTu benchmarking site, blowing everyone’s mind with a score of more than 85000!

If you remember, the Samsung Exynos 7420 chipset is currently on top of AnTuTu with 65000+ points. However, with a score of over 85,000 this Nexus device beats Samsung’s chip by over 20,000 points.

This brings us to the big question, what exactly is running inside this Nexus device? Well, AntuTu 5 doesn’t reveal much about the specs inside the device, but the phone probably will come with the new Snapdragon 820 chip from Qualcomm. While the score is still too good to be true, considering Qualcomm’s desperate need for a comeback with 820, the company could have boosted its performance to a whole new level.

What we do know is that the phone will be called as the Nexus 5 (2015) model, which probably means that LG is not sticking with the incremental naming policy. Also, this may also give us a clue about the screen size, as you can expect it to be around 5-inches (5.2-inch would be just perfect). The Nexus 6 came with a monstrous 5.9-inch display, but it was too big to handle. So, this could actually be a good move. The resolution is surprisingly just FHD, which would be a downgrade from the QHD display on the Nexus 6.

Anyways, if the performance of Snapdragon 820 is really this good, we would like to know whether it overheats like the current generation 810. But we hope Qualcomm will have learnt its lesson by now.

Usually, Google announces its Nexus devices in fourth quarter of the year and we expect the company to continue the tradition this year too. By then, there could be a couple of Snapdragon 820 powered smartphones like Xiaomi Mi5 in the market. So, things could get interesting pretty soon!

While the news was almost confirmed by an iSuppli analyst, the source revealed nothing about the processor that the new Google powered smartphone would use.

Now, a new report has cropped up online which claims that the Huawei made Nexus device could indeed use the company’s own Kirin processor. We have already seen the new Kirin 930 on the new Huawei Mediapad X2 smartphone. And most of the smartphones in the company’s lineup use its own Kirin processors. However, using Huawei’s processors inside Google’s Nexus range would be a big step up for the company.
In case you are wondering, there are plenty of reasons why Google would agree to use a Hisilicon made Kirin SoC inside its next Nexus phone. First of all, Hisilicon has evolved a lot in the past few years, enough to compete with market leaders like Qualcomm and Mediatek.

Hisilicon was established back in 2004 and has generated over $1.4 billion in revenues in 2013. It is now the no.1 IC design company in China.

The new Hisilicon Kirin 930 is a very advanced processor. It is built on a smaller 16nm process, even better than the 20nm process used by Qualcomm Snapdragon 810. Moreover, its an 64-bit octa-core SoC clocked at 2.0 GHz and based on ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture which helps save power. The processor is also capable enough to support up to 32MP resolution camera sensors.

While Huawei’s Hisilicon doesn’t make it to the top three global chipmakers list, the company announced last year that it would be selling chips to other companies too, which should further increase its market share. And what better smartphone than the upcoming Nexus device.

Remember to take this news with a grain of salt as nothing is confirmed as of now. But since a number of sources have started giving out details, its best to wait and watch if we actually see a Huawei made Nexus smartphone this year.

Stay tuned.

A few days back, we reported that Google might partner up with a Chinese OEM for its next Nexus device. Later, we came to know that that along with this Chinese OEM, Google will also partner with LG for a new Nexus device in 2015.

Now, Kevin Yang, the Director of China Research at iSuppli, a leading market research firm, confirmed on Weibo earlier today that Google has indeed chosen Huawei as the next Nexus maker. This is in line with the previous reports about Huawei entering into a partnership with Google to make this year’s Nexus device.

The major reason why Google went with Huawei could be because its the biggest competitor to Xiaomi at the moment. While everyone would have loved a Xiaomi Nexus device (in fact our recent survey showed that 43% readers would have liked a Xiaomi made Nexus), Huawei too has shown great promise in 2014 with releases like the Ascend Mate 7 and the Honor 6 Plus. Still, its very surprising that Google did not choose Motorola for its new device this year.

Now that we are almost sure that Huawei could be the next Nexus maker, we will have to wait and see whether they go with Huawei’s Kirin processor for the new device or with Qualcomm’s snapdragon range. Both are quite capable but will Google risk putting the new Kirin range in its smartphone/ tablets? Well, only time will tell.
