For those unaware, equipment made from the Chinese tech giant was banned by the local government from being used in the country’s 5G networking infrastructure. This meant that local telecom operators can no longer source telecommunications equipment from the company. Furthermore, the government also mandated that carriers have to phase out any equipment from the Chinese brand completely by the year 2027. Meaning, Huawei is essentially cut off from the 5G network in the UK.

According to an FinancialTimes report, a source stated that the company’s sales in 2020 were down by 27 percent year on year, reaching just 913 million Pounds (roughly 1.28 billion US Dollars). On the other hand, the company’s operating profit was down to a quarter, amounting to just 36.4 million Pounds (roughly 51.3 million US Dollars) before tax. Although, the vendor’s profits did benefit from a 26 million Pounds in costs due to the reduction in employee and travel expenses during this time.

While the UK unit of Huawei is a relatively small division of the company, it is also a symbol of the struggles that the brand is facing in various countries. After placing various sanctions on the telecom equipment maker, the US government also pressured other nations, including the UK, to ban the company from supplying gear for core 5G networks. Initially, the company was allowed to supply 5G in a limited capacity, but has since been banned completely from the network.

As per the company’s official notes, Huawei has been trading in the UK for over two decades now, with the new store being just one of the three stores that it plans on opening in the arriving months. The new store alone brings 15 new jobs for the Westfield Stratford City and its locals.

A new report has revealed that the UK might take quicker actions and tighten regulations around the Chinese tech giant to appease lawmakers. According to a Bloomberg report, Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party are demanding stricter rules on companies that are using 5G equipment from Huawei as part of the price for backing telecommunications security legislation, which are due in parliament next week.

Prior to this, it had been initially planned to allow firms to use Huawei equipment till 2027, a ban is enforced. At the moment, telecom operators had been stocking up on parts made by the Chinese company and sourcing alternatives as well. But the earlier ban might increase the cost at companies like BT Group and Vodafone that might now have accelerate the process of overhauling components from their networking infrastructure.

If the new proposal goes through, a ban would take effect as soon as September 2021. Notably, the UK has previously set a limit on network carriers on the purchase of Huawei equipment, which is set to take effect after December. Initially, Huawei had been granted a limited role in the 5G building within the country, but opposition led to the decision being reversed.

The US has also been pressuring the UK to take stricter actions against the telecom equipment provider on grounds of national security risk and espionage by the Chinese government. With Huawei out of the 5G race in the UK, operators would have to turn towards its rivals Nokia and Ericsson. We will have to wait to see what decision the parliament makes on the matter, so stay tuned for more updates.

The UK government found a “Critical, user-facing vulnerabilities” in the system regarding the Chinese telecommunications giant’s fixed-broadband products. The issue was caused by poor code quality and an old operating system, according to Huawei Cyber Security Evaluation Centre Oversight Board. This center was built by the company alongside the government in an arrangement to let the British National Cyber Security Centre examine its hardware and software.

Editor’s Pick: Entry-level Apple iPhone 12 models pack 64GB storage while Pro models start at 128GB storage

Since then, an annual report from HCSEC Oversight Board has stated that the security issue has been cleared and as such, no exploitations were detected. However, the fix also created a new and “major issue,” which is said to be caused by the “deficiencies in Huawei’s engineering processes remain.” The report from SCMP mentioned the event had “national significance,” and being a rare occasion where a full description of the problem was temporarily withheld from Huawei as the impact was assessed.

Notably, the discovery of the critical flaw arrived during the time when the British government had decided to ban the Chinese company from supplying the nation with equipment for 5G networking. The government is also currently reviewing its role in supplying fixed-broadband infrastructure. The HCSEC Oversight Board stated that it “can only provide limited technical assurance in the security risk management of Huawei equipment in UK networks.”

For those unaware, Huawei had previously been banned from providing 5G networking equipment in the UK. This had arrived after the Chinese tech giant had initially received the green light although with a market cap, but pressure from within the Parliament and the US had the decision revoked soon after. As of right now, the country plans on removing all Huawei made technology from the country as well.

The report also states that the year delay which the government is expecting at the moment for its 5G roll out may cost it’s economy a dire sum. 18.2 billion pounds is an estimate, with approximately 10 billion pounds of productivity benefits being missed out on. Similarly, even the mobile sector would lose out on the opportunity to generate about 4.7 billion pounds while related industries are likely to lose out on 2 billion pounds as well.

Furthermore, apart from just missing out on an estimated 173 billion pounds of incremental GDP over the course of 10 years (between 2020 to 2030), the delay in 5G roll out could also potentially impact innovation. Victor Zhang, Vice President of Huawei stated that “This new research shows how the US administration has directly impacted Britain’s economy, ending the UK’s leadership in 5G, holding the country back from realizing its full potential for years to come.”

The recent announcement made by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson laid out the plan to remove Huawei from the country’s networking infrastructure by the end of 2027. In other words, carriers can only purchase Huawei technology until the end of this year.

This move from the UK Government will reportedly cost telecom operators in the country around 2 billion Pounds (roughly 2.52 billion US Dollars). Furthermore, the removal of Huawei will also delay the adoption of 5G by at least 2 to 3 years, according to reports. The decision to ban Huawei may also have far reaching effects on the geopolitical situation between China and western nations like the US and UK.

The $1.25 billion research facility in question will be built in Cambridge and will be the international headquarters of Huawei’s fiber optic communication business. This new firm is said to create 400 new jobs in the region according to Huawei. However, this sizeable investment arrives at the time where its future in the country is quite uncertain.

This fact coupled with increasing pressure from the US government has also made its efforts of expansion in the region and Europe as a whole more difficult.

The new facility that is being built will bring hundreds of new job opportunities which acts as a boon to the UK’s economy that has been hit hard by the Coronavirus pandemic. The country is suffering from unemployment issues, with pressures increasing due to millions that are availing the government benefits. According to Huawei Vice President Victor Zhang, the new facility has been built “to help enshrine the UK’s leading position in optoelectronics and promote UK tech on a global scale.”

With a complete replacement being impossible by 2023, but the prohibition of new purchases and installations starting the same year.

But now, it seems like the government is working towards phasing out the Chinese tech giant’s equipment by 2023, as conservative members have pressured the UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson.

According to various reports, the Prime Minister has been pushed towards drawing up a plan that will effectively remove the telecommunications equipment made by Huawei in the near future. Previously, Huawei was allowed to only have a market share of 35 percent, which was similar to the Australian government’s restrictions. This arrives amidst multiple accusations like espionage and national data security risks being alleged by the US government.

Huawei’s 5G base stations

The US government had also urged the UK to ban Huawei in a similar fashion, but the Prime Minister had deemed the company’s involvement necessary at that point, even in a limited role. Various nations across the globe are having similar debates regarding the involvement of Huawei in their nation’s move to adopt the newer and faster bandwidth. While many do feel a threat of national security, there are also those that adopt 5G through the equipment provided by the Chinese company.

However, the UK government’s plans for the near future could be a sign of increased resistance being faced by Huawei in the western regions. Sir Iain Duncan, a conservative leader stated that “this is very good news and I hope and believe it will be the start of a complete and thorough review of our dangerous dependency on China.”

In other words, the removal of Chinese technology from their entire telecommunications ecosystem. At the moment, the trade disputes between the US and China have been ramping up, with additional sanctions being adopted to further limit Huawei’s operations in the US. There is a clear negative outlook on Chinese organizations and their possible individual actions, which are allegedly in the best interest of the Chinese government.

Huawei had made several bid to supply 5G infrastructures to several countries who are looking to deploy the next-generation connectivity. However, the US government made tremendous effort to block such deals, enjoining its ally boycott Huawei’s 5G equipment. While some countries went with the US advice and shunned Huawei’s gears, others such as the UK gave Huawei the nod to provide their 5G equipment.

Recently, there were reports that the UK may review its decision to use Huawei’s 5G gears in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Huawei even released an open letter advising the UK government not to do so. Respite may have come Huawei’s way as a senior government official have been quoted to have hinted that the government won’t likely review the decision. TechRadar quotes Simon McDonald, Permanent Under-Secretary at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Head of the Diplomatic Service in the UK to have stated that the government position on Huawei’s equipment in network development was considered, but will most likely remain unchanged.

Furthermore, the official disclosed that the UK’s decision to deploy Huawei’s 5G equipment which has strict conditions attached, was a firm one and therefore, is not being reopened.
