If the report is true, then the iPhone 5C and the iPad mini 4 will be the latest addition to this obsolete list.

For those unaware, the Cupertino based giant typically refers to a device as ‘vintage’ when it crosses five years old since its official announcement. But when a product cross seven years of age, the company labels these devices as ‘obsolete.’ In a similar move, Apple had recently declared that the iPhone 6 was a vintage device from the brand. Now, it appears that the iPhone 5c, which was launched in September 2013, will be the latest smartphone to enter this list.

This news isn’t really surprising considering that the iPhone 5c is over nine years old now. The device launched as the more affordable version of Apple’s flagship in 2013, which was the iPhone 5s. On the other hand, the iPad mini 4 also had a similar role by offering a relatively smaller display as a tablet, which is 7.9 inches, and also having a lower price tag compared to larger iPad models of that time. This model was also marketed more toward entertainment consumers, rather than creative professionals.

When a device is added to the ‘obsolete’ devices list, it means that the company will no longer offer hardware support for these products. Software support for these devices have already ended a while ago, but now, the brand won’t offer any form of paid repair services either.

The iPad Air 4 just went on pre-orders and, according to benchmarks, it has even higher performance than the iPhone 12. But, if we exclude the iPad Pro targeted at professional users, the iPad Air 4 is the most expensive Apple tablet. Is it worth spending more on such a device or cheaper tablets like iPad 10.2 8th gen and iPad Mini 5 make more sense for your needs? This is a specs comparison between iPad Air 4 and other affordable Apple iPads which should let you find out.

Design

You can see it even at first glance: the iPad Air 4 is the tablet with the most stunning design. Thanks to its very narrow bezels around the display, it is very elegant and futuristic. So, if you want the iPad with the best look, you know what to choose. Instead, if you need the most compact and lightweight tablet, go for the iPad Mini 5: thanks to its smaller display, it comes with smaller dimensions. Note that the iPad Air 4 also supports the keyboard and it turns into a mini-laptop. Despite its wider display, it has similar dimensions to the iPad 10.2 8th gen.

Display

The most advanced display is on board of the iPad Air 2020: it is a Liquid Retina IPS LCD panel with a 500 nit brightness and very high resolution (1640 x 2360 pixels). It is a wider display and it has the widest color gamut, as well as the True Tone technology and full lamination. Right after, we got the iPad 10.2 8th gen: unfortunately, you do not get full lamination, but it is still a pretty nice panel. Even the iPad Mini 5 is nice, but if you want the best multimedia tablet, the iPad Air 2020 has no rivals but the iPad Pro.

Hardware/Software

The iPad Air 4 has the most powerful chipset ever seen on a tablet launched by Apple to date. We are talking about the Apple A14 Bionic: the first SoC built at 5 nm and the same chipset as the iPhone 12. But the iPad Air 2020 actually provides even better performance than iPhone 12 because the Apple A14 clock is limited on the iPhone 12. In order to get a device that can beat the iPad Air 4, you have to consider the iPhone 12 Pro or the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Both the iPad Mini 5 and the iPad 10.2 8th gen are fueled by the Apple A12 Bionic chipset, but there is a difference: iPad 10.2 8th gen ships with iPadOS 14 out of the box, while the iPad Mini 5 ships with iOS 12. So, expect longer software support with the iPad 10.2 8th gen.

Camera

The Apple iPad Air 4 has a way better rear camera than iPad 10.2 8th gen and iPad Mini 5. We are talking about a 12 MP rear camera which is actually the same sensor as the latest iPhones, but it is not supported by any secondary sensor and it does not come with OIS. The camera is able to record 4K videos at 60 fps and 1080p videos up to 240 fps. The iPad Mini 5 and the iPad 10.2 8th gen sport the same 8 MP rear camera, but the front camera is better on the iPad Mini 5 (7 MP vs 1.2 MP).

Battery

Unfortunately, we did not test the battery life of the iPad Air 4. iPad Mini 5 has a smaller battery than its siblings. It will be a hard fight between iPad Air 4 and iPad 10.2 8th gen. According to Apple, they both last up to 10 hours (multimedia).

Price

Apple iPad Mini 5 is actually priced less than €400/$350, iPad 10.2 8th gen costs €370/$329, and iPad Air 4 has a €640/$599 starting price. Unless you need a very compact tablet, it does not make too many sense to go for an iPad Mini 5 with the iPad 10.2 8th gen around. The iPad Air 4 wins the comparison under every point of view, but it is way more expensive.

For the avoidance of doubt, the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 packs a 5,300mah battery and the video compares the battery endurance level with those of the iPad 4 Mini, Huawei P10 Plus and iPhone 7 Plus. To clear things up, the iPad Mini 4 packs a 5,124mAh battery, the P10 Plus features a 3750mAh battery and the iPhone 7 Plus uses a 2,750mAh battery.

Another thing to note is that a more powerful and efficient processor is on the iPhone 7 Plus and Huawei P10 Plus. The Apple A8 chip on the iPad Mini 4 could even be more powerful than the Snapdragon 625 chip the Mi Max 2 features. All four devices — three smartphones, and a tablet, were subjected to different activities which are things we use daily on our devices. First, the gadgets were subjected to one hour of gaming, all at the same time, running the NBA 2017 game. Thereafter, 1 hour of video chat was made on all the devices and this was followed by 1 hour of full HD video capture and then a music video was streamed online for 1 hour on all the gadgets.

The iPad Mini 4 was the first to run out of battery, followed by the iPhone 7 Plus and then the Huawei P10 Plus. It is interesting to note that by the time all the three models were out of battery power, the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 battery capacity was still at 50%. This simply means the Mi Max 2 offers twice the battery power and perhaps with more battery management than the others. We cannot conclude on this yet because we haven’t independently verified the test. But this is an indication that the Snapdragon 625 isn’t a power hungry processor and you’ll get an amazing battery life on the Mi Max 2.

It arrived as a smaller edition of 9.7-inch iPad. When the iPad Mini was launched, Apple was selling iPhones with 4-inch screen. However, the iPhones have now grown in size as they feature 5.5-inch screens and even iPad tablets have become more advanced as the new iPad Pro come with powerful specs and keyboard support. Since the launch of iPad Mini 4 in 2015, the Cupertino company has not released a successor device. Speculations have it Apple may be discontinuing the iPad Mini tablet series.

According to BGR, a source that is close to the Cupertino company has revealed that the iPad Mini is being phased out. The reason behind it is that its own products like the larger iPhone and iPhone Plus phones and advanced iPad Pro tablets could have led to cannibalism of iPad Mini. The arrival of these products have reduced the sales of iPad Mini which indicates that its popularity has decreased.

In this year, Apple reduced the listing of iPad Mini 4 on Apple Store. It is now only selling the 128 GB iPad Mini. Its Wi-Fi only model is priced at $399 and its Wi-Fi + LTE variant costs $529. There is no confirmation on whether Apple has halted the production of iPad Mini 4 and there is no information available on when will the Cupertino company stop the sales of iPad Mini 4. If the report about discontinuation of iPad Mini series is true, the company is expected to make an official announcement on it soon.

Apple’s 2017 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) will be held between June 5 and 9. As it does annually, new iterations of iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS are expected to get unveiled at the upcoming event. Speculations are rife that a new 10.5-inch iPad Pro may get unveiled at the event. According to KGI Securities analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, there is 75 percent possibility that the Cupertino company will announce a 10.5-inch iPad Pro at WWDC 2017.

Apple is rumored to have fitted a 10.5-inch screen on the alleged tablet that has a form factor of 9.7-inch iPad Pro. To make it possible, the company is rumored to have reduced the size of its bezels. Since the 10.5-inch iPad Pro is expected to sport slimmer bezels, there is no information on whether the Touch ID sensor will be placed on the front or at the rear of the tablet.

For the past few months, we have been regularly hearing about a large screen tablet from Apple. The device was expected to debut last year itself alongside the iPad Air 2 but it is said that due to production issues, the company had to delay its launch.

Today, we are once again seeing a new leak about the said device and contrary to the recent rumors which named the tablet as the Apple iPad Pro, this particular image of the large screen Apple tablet is named as the iPad Plus. So, could Apple be using the same naming scheme for its large screen tablet as the iPhone 6 Plus? Well, we don’t know that for sure, but it won’t be surprising if it comes to be true.

The same Weibo source also reveals that the upcoming tablet will feature a 12.9-inch 2K display. It will be extremely thin and light too. It is said that the iPad Plus will feature a 7mm thin profile, which is quite thin for a tablet of this size and will weigh less than 700 grams. As for battery, the company will reportedly increase the capacity to 11000mAh which will be almost 150% increase as compared to the current iPad Air 2. It is also said that the device can use third party protective keyboard cases.

The source further revealed that the company will most likely scrap the existing iPad Mini 3 in favor of iPad Mini 4 and will continue selling the old iPad Mini 2 version. Also, Apple plans to bring three different iPhone screen sizes in the market, which hints at a possible 4-inch iPhone’s entry into the market.

Remember that the news is not official and hence, we can’t really confirm anything at the moment. So, make sure that you take this leak with a pinch of salt.

Check back on us in the coming weeks for more updates.
