While the company has showcased rollable television in the past, this TV is unique thanks to its dual sided rolling mechanic on its screen.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-395699 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/lg-oprolbare-tv.gif?x10805" alt="LG" width="1440" height="950" /></p>
<p>According to a <a href="https://nl.letsgodigital.org/televisies-tvs/lg-tv-rollable-display-2021/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>LetsGoDigital</em> </a>report, the South Korean tech giant was awarded a design patent by The Hague International Design System. This patent was titled &#8216;Television with rollable display.&#8217; In its rolled up form, the television resembles a shape of an elongated speaker, which has rounded sides. The device houses the display on either side that can be pulled out. When pulled out, the display unfurls out from the two housing units.</p>
<p>The company has already showcased the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/20/lg-signature-oled-tv-r-finally-goes-on-sale-in-south-korea-for-100-million-won87000/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">LG Signature OLED TV R</a>, which has its rollable display roll out from a base. But unlike this model, this rollable TV is more compact and has a triangular housing that extends horizontally rather than vertically. Looking at the design sketches from the rear, it can be observed that this display is supported by a T shaped frame. Unfortunately, finer details like the size of the screen and its resolution is currently unknown at the moment. Although, it does appear to have a 16:9 aspect ratio along with an OLED panel.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-395701 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/lg-tv-rollable-display-770x663.jpg?x10805" alt="LG" width="770" height="663" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/lg-tv-rollable-display-770x663.jpg 770w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/lg-tv-rollable-display-770x663-300x258.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/lg-tv-rollable-display-770x663-768x661.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/lg-tv-rollable-display-770x663-696x599.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/lg-tv-rollable-display-770x663-488x420.jpg 488w" sizes="(max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px" /></p>
<p>Notably, this design has the patented LG Rollable OLED TV resemble the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/01/12/ces-2021-tcl-showcases-marvelous-rollable-oled-smartphone-and-a-17-inch-scrolling-display/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">TCL CSOT rollable TV</a>, which was demonstrated in October 2020. As of right now, it is unknown if the company is actually working on such a TV or is just covering all bases. However, it does offer us a look at a futuristic and compact rollable TV that could even be portable.</p>

<p>According to the <a href="https://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/tech/2021/04/133_307892.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>KoreaTimes</em> </a>report, a source close to the matter stated that &#8220;<span class="read">A lot of NPEs have approached LG Electronics for the possible acquisition of its 5G mobile patents</span>.&#8221; Unlike LG&#8217;s products, the company&#8217;s mobile patents are still considered competitive. This has caused multiple firms to seek its patents including Samsung. An official from the South Korean tech giant said that &#8220;<span class="read">We have not reviewed any plans.&#8221;</span></p>
<p>For those unaware, NPEs are firms that holds a patent or patent rights. These companies do not manufacture or produce such patented technology but rather generate profit by licensing it out to other firms. As per the source, LG currently holds patents in LTE and 5G technology that are worth around 901 million US Dollars. In total, the former smartphone maker holds about 24,000 LTE and 5G standard essential patents, which is the third largest nuymber of 5G standard patents, as per <span class="read">data provided by IPlytics</span>.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-136044 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/lg-logo.jpg?x10805" alt="Samsung" width="700" height="400" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/lg-logo.jpg 700w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/lg-logo-300x171.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></p>
<p>Furthermore, the company is also ranked 1st in terms of global 4G standard patents for four consecutive years from 2012 to 2016. Thus, after its exit from the mobile market due to the unit being a loss maker, it arrives that no surprise that other firms aim to buyout its patents. An LG Electronics&#8217; official also offered a statement citing that &#8220;<span class="read">We cannot confirm the speculation. We are reviewing the use of our network patents in other sectors such as IoT or self-driving</span>.&#8221;</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400">LG is yet to launch a foldable smartphone, however, it has released other interesting products. First and foremost, LG is the only company to </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/20/lg-signature-oled-tv-r-finally-goes-on-sale-in-south-korea-for-100-million-won87000/"><span style="font-weight: 400">commercially sell </span></a><span style="font-weight: 400">a rollable smart TV called LG Signature OLED TV R. Also, it is the only brand in the world selling a modern smartphone with a swivel display in the form of </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/lg-wing-5g/"><span style="font-weight: 400">LG Wing</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400">.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Though the company has confirmed to launch a rollable smartphone next year, it seems to even have plans for a laptop with this very same tech. Because it has filed a design patent for the same. This LG patent was first reported by </span><a href="https://rootmygalaxy.net/lg-files-patent-for-a-rollable-laptop-with-17-inch-display/"><i><span style="font-weight: 400">Root MyGalaxy</span></i></a><span style="font-weight: 400"> but the publication does not say anything about when and at which office this patent was filed.</span></p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>EDITOR&#8217;S PICK: </strong><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/08/05/lg-showcases-an-array-of-flexible-and-rollable-displays-at-the-sid-2020/">LG showcases an array of flexible and rollable displays at the SID 2020</a></h6>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">According to the diagrams, the display in this laptop can be unrolled from 13.3-inch up to 17-inch. That’s not all, even the keyboard with a touchpad can be rolled inside the display drum. So when the notebook is completely rolled, it looks like a soundbar.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">So what are the use cases of this design? The only one we could think of is that it will take less space in bags. But since flexible technology is fragile, it will take time to perfect this. Hence, we don’t see LG launching a rollable laptop in the near future.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Having said that, if you still want a futuristic computer, </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Lenovo/"><span style="font-weight: 400">Lenovo</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400"> sells a foldable laptop called </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/22/lenovo-thinkpad-x1-fold-china-launch-price-specs-features/"><span style="font-weight: 400">ThinkPad X1 Fold</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400">, which is limited to certain regions for now.</span></p>

Now, the company might also be working on another new device within this project as a recent patent suggests that the South Korean tech giant is making another innovative smartphone with a rollable display.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-351467 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/lg-uittrekbare-smartphone-1024x661.jpg?x10805" alt="LG" width="1024" height="661" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/lg-uittrekbare-smartphone-1024x661.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/lg-uittrekbare-smartphone-1024x661-300x194.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/lg-uittrekbare-smartphone-1024x661-768x496.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/lg-uittrekbare-smartphone-1024x661-696x449.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/lg-uittrekbare-smartphone-1024x661-651x420.jpg 651w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>According to a <a href="https://nl.letsgodigital.org/opvouwbare-telefoons/lg-project-b-rollable-smartphone-2021/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>LetsGoDigital</em> </a>report, LG filed a new patent with the USPO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) back in August 2019, which was finally published in September 2020. The device in the patent is for a handset with a flexible display, which can be rolled up within its own housing. Looking at the images, the device seems to be like any other regular handset when in its compact form. However, it resembles a tablet when the display is completely unfurled.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/11/02/samsung-galaxy-s21-ultra-already-in-production/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra could already be in production: Report</a></strong></h6>
<p>Unlike a foldable device with a hinge in the middle, the rolling mechanism is on either side of the device. Meaning, one simply pulls out the rest of the display from the sides. When the device is unrolled, the frame also moves along with the display. This indicates that the bezel also acts as protection for the rollable display&#8217;s housing. The display from the LG smartphone with a pull out the rollable screen in an OLED panel with a metal housing.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-351469 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/smartphone-met-oprolbaar-display-1024x740.jpg?x10805" alt="LG" width="1024" height="740" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/smartphone-met-oprolbaar-display-1024x740.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/smartphone-met-oprolbaar-display-1024x740-300x217.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/smartphone-met-oprolbaar-display-1024x740-768x555.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/smartphone-met-oprolbaar-display-1024x740-324x235.jpg 324w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/smartphone-met-oprolbaar-display-1024x740-696x503.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/smartphone-met-oprolbaar-display-1024x740-581x420.jpg 581w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>Furthermore, since the rolling mechanism is housed on the sides, the company has also saved up on space and thickness. It has sufficient space for its internal components and is not very bulky, as per the design patents. Unfortunately, the specifications and the name of the device are currently unknown and we will have to wait for an official company announcement. So stay tuned as we will be providing more updates when additional information is available.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-343682 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/lg-oprolbaar-display-camera-stylus-pen-1017x1024.jpg?x10805" alt="LG" width="1017" height="1024" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/lg-oprolbaar-display-camera-stylus-pen-1017x1024.jpg 1017w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/lg-oprolbaar-display-camera-stylus-pen-1017x1024-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/lg-oprolbaar-display-camera-stylus-pen-1017x1024-298x300.jpg 298w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/lg-oprolbaar-display-camera-stylus-pen-1017x1024-768x773.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/lg-oprolbaar-display-camera-stylus-pen-1017x1024-696x701.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/lg-oprolbaar-display-camera-stylus-pen-1017x1024-417x420.jpg 417w" sizes="(max-width: 1017px) 100vw, 1017px" /></p>
<p>According to a <a href="https://nl.letsgodigital.org/smartphones/lg-oprolbaar-display-apparaat/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>LetsGoDigital</em> </a>report, the South Korean tech giant filed a patent application for this &#8216;Electronic device&#8217; with the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) back in 2019. This got approved earlier this month arrives with various product sketches as well. Looking at these images, a device with a primary base can be observed which features all of the components as well as the rolled up display. This base has a square rectangular cuboid or triangular design, based on the variations.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-343683 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/display-apparaat-1024x730.jpg?x10805" alt="LG" width="1024" height="730" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/display-apparaat-1024x730.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/display-apparaat-1024x730-300x214.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/display-apparaat-1024x730-768x548.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/display-apparaat-1024x730-100x70.jpg 100w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/display-apparaat-1024x730-696x496.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/display-apparaat-1024x730-589x420.jpg 589w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>Judging by its size, it is meant to be a compact and carryable device that might serve multiple purposes. The display is a rollable OLED panel, which is similar to the one seen in its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/01/08/lg-signature-oled-tv-r-with-roll-up-display-showcased-at-ces-2019/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Signature TV R</a> that featured a rollable display as well. A power button can be found on top of the display device, while additional buttons are also placed next to it that control the display rolling out or rolling in. Although, images show that the user can also manually pull out the display if needed.</p>

<p>At the moment, it is unsure what purpose the device actually serves as the images reveal that it indeed has a camera as well on one end and the display can be used for multimedia entertainment. Another interesting feature is that the device also has a stylus, which may be indicative of the gadget being targetted towards professionals in the creative fields. Furthermore, when pulling out the display, the aspect ratio of the image being displayed is changed according to the amount of display that is rolled out. So, users can choose what length of the display they require.</p>

<p>Unfortunately, the name of this product is currently unknown and its internal specifications are also unclear. However, LG has provided an in depth breakdown of the components that will be housed on the inside of the device&#8217;s casing, so we can assume that the company might actually be working on such a device and could possibly showcase it in notable events like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/ces-2021/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">CES 2021</a>. Although, that is just speculation so take it with a pinch of salt.</p>

The patent filing shows LG is working on a display design where the screen wraps around the body of the phone.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/lg-display-patent/"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-116783" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/lg-display-patent.png?x10805" alt="lg-display-patent" width="557" height="425" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/lg-display-patent.png 557w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/lg-display-patent-300x229.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 557px) 100vw, 557px" /></a></p>
<p>Previous patent filings had revealed LG&#8217;s intent on exploring the numerous possibilities which curved OLED display brings to the table, so this recent filing isn&#8217;t much of a surprise. The design, which sees the display wrap around the upper body of the smartphone, results in a two-screen looking display. There are no physical buttons for power and volume controls at the sides, while the bottom part features a circular element which could likely house the home button or even fingerprint sensor.</p>
<p style="text-align: center"><strong><span style="color: #ff0000">Read More: </span><a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/2017/01/28/clearer-images-lg-lg-watch-style-leaked-online/">Clearer Images of LG LG Watch Style Leaked Online</a></strong></p>
<p>Although we wouldn&#8217;t mind having this concept looking design come out someday soon, the patent filing doesn&#8217;t really mean that LG will release a smartphone with this design in the near future. But we sure look forward to a surprise from LG, after all, we have seen quite a lot of patents on flexible and curved displays from the Korean company.</p>
