All the devices on this end of support (EOS) list will no longer enjoy regular software updates and upgrades from the company. The list consists of a mixture of Mi and Redmi smartphones as presented by the Xiaomi Security Center.

The Xiaomi Mi 9 and Mi Play are the latest devices included in the refreshed list. The two devices have been quite popular during the trajectory of their evolution into the EOS category. It should be noted that while a few critical updates will still be available for these devices, they have stopped receiving general updates and security patches. Devices on the list generally become more vulnerable to hacks and online threats.

Xiaomi, like other major brands, offers a limited lifespan of software updates and upgrades for smartphones. As one set fall under the hammer, as it were, new and improved products pop up to bridge the vacuum. The EOS list now contains 41 Mi and 29 Redmi smartphones, totaling 70 devices so far.

The phone was launched in Ukraine yesterday, exactly three months after it was unveiled in China. Xiaomi is asking for UAH 4,699 (~$174) which isn’t a huge difference from its ¥1099 (~$164) price in China.

The Mi Play has a 5.84-inch 1080 x 2280 display with a waterdrop notch and a 19:9 aspect ratio. It has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage which is expandable via a MicroSD card slot that also doubles as the second SIM slot.

Knowing Xiaomi, we already predicted they would release other variants in the near future and we just confirmed the existence of these variants along with their prices.

If you check the page source of the purchase page of the Mi Play, you will find the Mi Play will also come in two more variants – a 6GB RAM + 64GB version and a 6GB RAM + 128GB version.

The page source not only lists the variants but also their respective prices. When they launch, the 6GB RAM + 64GB ROM version will sell for ¥1299 (~$188) and the 6GB RAM + 128GB version will be sold for ¥1599 (~$232).

Apart from the increase in RAM and storage, the rest of the specs should be the same as the 4GB RAM + 64GB version. However, we won’t be surprised if certain color variants are only available in certain configurations.

Xiaomi has released a bunch of official live photos that show what the phone really looks like.

If the Mi 8 Lite didn’t already exist, you won’t be wrong if you called the Mi Play the Mi 8 Lite. The Mi Play is covered in Gorilla Glass on both sides with a metal frame in the middle. It is available in three colors – Black, Fantasy Blue, and Twilight Gold. The gold and blue variants have a special finish that gives the phone a shimmering effect when light rays hit the back.

Xiaomi has gone for dual cameras like so many of its phones this year. The cameras are arranged vertically with a LED flash below the setup and a fingerprint scanner sitting in the middle of the phone.

[envira-gallery id=”229201″]

The Mi Play is the first Xiaomi phone with a waterdrop notch but it won’t be the last. The Redmi 7 Pro will have one too. The display has a 19:9 aspect ratio and the resolution is FHD+.

The Mi Play is not only the first Xiaomi phone with a waterdrop notch but it is also the first smartphone in the world to be powered by the spanking new Helio P35. The Helio P35 is a 12nm octa-core chipset with a PowerVR GPU. Xiaomi says it offers better performance than the Snapdragon 625 but what we would really like to see is a comparison against the Snapdragon 632.

The Mi Play is priced at ¥1099 (~$160) and goes on sale tomorrow, December 25, at 10 AM (China local time).

Along with the launch of Xiaomi Mi Play, the company has also set a new Guinness World Record using the same smartphone to create the world’s largest dynamic puzzle using smartphones. The company made a Christmas tree of 7.9 meters using around 1,008 smartphones to set the record.

The company says that one of the major difficulties in forming a giant screen/display using multiple mobile devices is to connect those phone’s screens into a matrix and ensuring that all the smartphones are 100 percent in sync. However, the company was able to successfully set the record, beating the previous record of a dynamic mobile-based puzzle, which used 504 phones.

To complete the record, Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun put the last piece (Mi Play smartphone) into the puzzle. Later, the same tree-type structure was also made available for the audience. Also, the same structure also doubled-up to provide high-speed internet connectivity to the customers in the shopping mall, which also became the biggest hotspot in Beijing on Christmas Eve, said the company.

Revealing more information about this, Lei Jun said through Weibo post that the company was preparing for this activity since the last two weeks, and the team started making the construction at 4:00 AM and was completed at around 4:00 PM.

As said, the record was set using the Xiaomi’s Mi Play smartphone, which was launched by the company today in China. As we previously reported, the phone comes bundled with an offer that provides free 10GB internet data every month for one year.

The Xiaomi Mi Play features a 5.84-inch waterdrop Full HD+ display and is powered by MediaTek Helio P35 octa-core chipset with IMG GE8320 GPU. It packs 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage but we are expecting other variants to launch in a few months.

For photography, the phone comes with a 12MP 1.25μm primary sensor that is paired with a secondary 2MP sensor for capturing depth details for bokeh images. The front camera is an 8MP sensor with HDR, face recognition, and portrait mode, among others.

Connectivity options on the device include Dual SIM, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, and a USB type-C port. For security, it comes with a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. It is powered by a 3,000mAh battery which should be sufficient for almost a day.

The Mi Play seems to be the first of a new series for Xiaomi. It is the Mi line’s version of the Redmi series, so phones released under this category will be less powerful and less expensive than the other phones in the Mi series.

Mi Play Design

The Mi Play has a more elaborate design that makes it stand out from the Redmi series. So rather than the metal/plastic body of the Redmi series, you get Gorilla Glass on both sides of the Mi Play. The finish on the back is also eye-catching and not dull like that of the Redmi line.

Specs

The Xiaomi Mi Play has a 5.84-inch screen with a water-drop notch, a first for Xiaomi. Its greatly reduced bezels give it a form factor that is just a tiny bit bigger than the Mi 6 which has a 5.15-inch display. The Mi Play has a 1080 x 2280 resolution (FHD+) with a 1500:1 contrast ratio, 432 PPI, and an eye protection mode.

The processor powering the phone was a mystery but today we finally get to know that it is powered by a brand new chipset from MediaTek called the Helio P35.

The Helio P35 is a 12nm octa-core chipset clocked at 2.3GHz. It has a feature called CPU/GPU dual-turbo technology and its AnTuTu score places its performance above that of the Snapdragon 625. If you asked us, we would say the Helio P35 is MediaTek’s answer to Qualcomm’s 14nm Snapdragon 632 processor. The processor has an IMG PowerVR GE8320 GPU clocked at 680MHz.

The Helio P35 chipset is paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. This is the only storage configuration available but we won’t be surprised if Xiaomi announced a new variant in a few months.

Dual cameras are practically standard on devices now and it is no surprise that the Mi Play also joins the trend. It has a 12MP 1.25μm primary sensor that is paired with a secondary 2MP sensor for capturing depth details for bokeh images. Xiaomi says it has HDR, EIS, and a bunch of AI features. The front camera is an 8MP sensor with HDR, face recognition, and portrait mode and more. Below are some camera samples.

[envira-gallery id=”229097″]

The Mi Play packs a 3,000mAh battery which should be sufficient for almost a day. There is no fast charging, so you are left with 5V/2A charging. There is also a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner.

The phone has dual-SIM support (nano only), dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, and a MicroUSB port. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have an audio jack.

Mi Play Price and Availability

The Xiaomi Mi Play is only available in one configuration (4GB + 64GB). It will be available in three colors – Twilight Gold, Fantasy Blue, and Black. On the official online store, only the blue and black variants are available.

The Mi Play is priced at ¥1099 which roughly converts to $160. It is not expensive but Xiaomi itself has multiple devices at that price range which have better specs. However, Xiaomi is also throwing in 10GB of free high-speed data for 12 months which is worth between ¥828 (~$120) and ¥1296 (~$188) per year depending on the network operator. If you were to subtract the cost of the data from the cost of the phone, then you are practically getting the device for free.

Unfortunately, those who live outside China and order the Mi Play will not be able to enjoy the free data bundled with the phone.

The Mi Play will go on sale at 10 AM tomorrow, December 25 on the official Mi online store.

Hence, it is being speculated that it could be featuring the newly announced Helio P90 SoC.

Following is an unboxing video of the Xiaomi Mi Play that has surfaced on the Chinese microblogging site. The blurry video only manages to reveal that the Mi Play handset features a thick chin while its side bezels are not very thin. The handset can be seen in Bright Black.

Earlier today, the official images of the Dream Blue and Gold Dawn gradient color variants of the Mi Play handset were released Xiaomi President Lin Bin. Speaking of Bin, he has also shared another image (shown below) through his Weibo to confirm on the key features of the smartphone.

Through Weibo, Bin has expressed that size of mobile phones are getting bigger and bigger and it is inconvenient to operate such phones with one hand. The Xiaomi Mi Play features a 5.84-inch display, but the size of the smartphone is equivalent to 5-inch smartphones from few years ago. It is pocket-friendly smartphone that can be easily operated with hand. The display supports full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2280 pixels and a pixel density of 432 ppi. The screen is coupled with features like 1500:1 contrast ratio, sunlight legibility, night screen mode and eye protection mode.

The Xiaomi Mi Play will be unveiled tomorrow in China. It is expected to carry a price tag of 1,699 Yuan (~$246). However, there is no confirmation on whether the pricing belongs to the 6 GB RAM + 64 GB storage or 6 GB RAM + 128 GB storage variants of the Mi Play.

However, none of the reports have confirmed on the exact name chipset that powers the Mi Play. Some have speculated that it could be featuring the MediaTek Helio 90 chipset whereas some have claimed that it could be featuring the unannounced Snapdragon 730 chipset. Leaked photos of what appears like launch slides of the Xiaomi Mi Play handset have been shared a Weibo user. The leaked slides reveal the pricing and key features including the chipset.

The first slide reveals that the Xiaomi Mi Play is powered by MediaTek’s annual flagship chipset. The 64 GB and 128 GB storage editions of the Mi Play feature 6 GB of RAM. The handset is fitted with a 5.84-inch waterdrop notch screen. It features 3,000mAh battery to keep the lights on. The leaked slide also claims that the phone will be available free internet access for the entire year. The smartphone is priced at 1,699 Yuan (~$246) in China and by paying 99 Yuan (~$14), its users can avail 12 months accident insurance.

The second slide also states that the Mi Play that carries a price tag of 1,699 Yuan (~$246) is driven by MediaTek Helio flagship chipset. There is no confirmation on whether the pricing belongs to the base model featuring 6 GB RAM + 64 GB storage or the higher model with 6 GB RAM + 128 GB storage.

The above slide again reveals that the smartphone will be available in color gradient choices. Xiaomi President Lin Bin has already shared official images of the Dream Blue and Dawn Gold gradient color models. The rear side of the phone is equipped with AI enabled 12-megapixel + 5-megapixel dual camera setup.

The third image has the contents that are mentioned in the first slide. So, what could be the MediaTek Helio annual flagship chipset that powers the Xiaomi Mi Play handset? Could it be the newly announced Helio P90 chipset? The Helio P90 includes two Cortex A75 cores working at 2.2 GHz and six Cortex A55 clocking at 2 GHz. The SoC includes PowerVR GM 9446 graphics and support for Google AR Core. Further leaks appearing before the launch of the Mi Play are expected to confirm on the exact moniker of its chipset.

While most of the details related to the phone have already leaked online, a new report sheds light on the bundled offer with the purchase of Xiaomi Play.

A Weibo user has shared an image of the Xiaomi Play’s retail box, which reveals that the smartphone will come with 10GB of free internet data for one year. Currently, there’s no further information available related to this offer.

The ‘Play’ name hints that the phone will focus on entertainment, gaming, other such ‘fun’ stuff. This will mark the expansion of the company’s portfolio of smartphones with a new series and the Xiaomi Play will be the first smartphone in this new series.

Earlier, there were rumors suggesting that the Xiaomi Play could be the rebranded version of the Pocophone F1 for the Chinese market. However, the images shared by the company has confirmed that the Xiaomi Play will be an all-new phone and not a rebranded model.

Recently, we reported that the Xiaomi Mi Play will come in three variants — 4GB RAM with 64GB internal storage, 6GB RAM with 64GB internal storage, and 6GB RAM with 128GB internal storage. It is also expected to have a microSD card slot for expanding the storage capacity.

Further, it has also been leaked that the smartphone will be offered in three colors — Black, Dream Blue, and Dawn Gold. Xiaomi has been teasing the phone, revealing its design which confirmed that it will come with a waterdrop notch, making it first smartphone from Xiaomi to have such notch.

Additionally, the phone is confirmed to come with dual rear cameras which is likely to be powered by artificial intelligence technology. On the front side, it will come equipped with an 8-megapixel snapper. The rear camera sensors are stacked vertically in the top-left corner and there’s also a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.

The TENAA listing of the phone suggests that the device will feature a 5.84-inch Full HD+ display having 2280 x 1080 pixels screen resolution. The listing also reveals that the phone will be powered by a moderate 2,900mAh battery. The Mi Play is running Android 8.1 Oreo operating system out-of-the-box with the company’s own MIUI custom interface.

To know about the phone’s pricing and availability information, including any bundled offer, we’ll have to wait until the company officially launches the phone on 24th December.

On its own website, the company teased the new launch saying “I unilaterally announced that this should be my most wanted Christmas gift. See [you] at 10 o’clock tomorrow.”

Going by the teaser, it seems that the company is teasing the launch of Mi Play since this is a new category for the company and the world “Play” resembles fun that the company is teasing.

Rumors suggest that the Mi Play smartphone is the rebranded version of Pocophone F1 for the Chinese market. Earlier, we reported that Xiaomi could hold a launch event for the Mi Pay between December 17 and December 26.

Xiaomi had first launched the Poco F1 in the Indian market in August and was later launched in other markets as Pocophone F1. Recently, the company revealed that it has sold over 700,000 units of the Poco F1 in the past three months.

As for the specifications, the Poco F1 sports a 6.18-inch IPS LCD notched display that produces Full HD+ resolution and a layer of Gorilla Glass for protection from minor scratches. Under the hood, the device is powered by Qualcomm‘s Snapdragon 845 flagship processor and comes with LiquidCool technology.

As for the photography, the device comes with a 12-megapixel Sony IMX363 primary sensor, coupled with a 5-megapixel secondary sensor on the back panel. On the front side, there’s a 20-megapixel selfie camera powered with artificial intelligence for capturing enhanced selfie shots.

The phone comes with 6GB/8GB of RAM and 64GB/128GB/256GB of internal storage, depending on the variant. It runs on the company’s MIUI with Poco Launcher, based on Android 8.1 Oreo operating system and is powered by a 4,000mAh battery that supports Quick Charge 4.0 fast charging technology.

To know for sure what’s up the company’s sleeves, we’ll have to wait till tomorrow when Xiaomi officially revealed its ‘fun’ product.
