With AI-generated notes powered by GPT-3.5, members can focus on the meeting itself and not on taking notes. In the near future, key points and takeaways will be displayed after the meeting. AI-generated tasks and action items will also be automatically suggested for follow-up.

Lastly, Teams Premium will also offer live translations for captions in 40 languages, making meetings more productive and effortless for everyone. Only the meeting organizer needs to have Teams Premium for all attendees to enjoy the benefits of real-time translations.

Additionally, team meetings will be more personalized and branded for its members. IT admins will be able to create customized meeting templates to greatly reduce the time and effort required to plan a meeting. Google has recently released the January update for multiple Pixel devices which surprisingly includes the Pixel 3 and 3XL. However, the update is still on hold for Pixel 6 series devices which will receive multiple bug fixes later in January. So, let’s take a look at what the new update carries.

According to an official post made on Google’s support forums, The update is rolling out this week with build number SP1A.210812.016.A2. The update brings the January security patch and a whole host of bug fixes. The most notable fix mentioned in the changelog is that Google is finally getting rid of the bug that prevents users from making emergency calls when certain third-party apps are installed on their pixel devices.

One of these culprits is the Microsoft Teams app, for which the company recently has released a patch. However, Google is making changes on a firmware level to prevent this issue from happening again in the future.

Pixel 3a to Pixel 6 series devices also receive a bug fix that was causing an issue where phones would unlock by themselves after a missed call. Other than that, a whole host of fixes and changes have been made all across the board for multiple devices, which you can check by reading the complete changelog.

An odd incident recently occurred where a Google Pixel 3 user was unable to call 911 during an emergency. Now, the results of the official investigation from the company has revealed some interesting reasons as to why this happened.

Back in November 2021, Reddit user u/KitchenPicture5849 (Via AndroidPolice) shared his unfortunate experience on the social media platform. The user had placed an emergency 911 call for an ambulance, but only after the phone ringing once, the Pixel 3 froze completely. This further hampered any further attempts from the user to communicate with the person who was on the other side of the call. While the device had managed to reveal the location to the emergency services on the call, the user was unable to share crucial details like his address, apartment number, or even the condition of the person that required medical assistance.

The Pixel 3 was basically stuck on the app screen. Fortunately, the Reddit users managed to reach emergency services through the landline. But considering the gravity of the situation, this could’ve been a fatal experience for those that only use smartphones. When sharing his experience on Reddit, the user also recreated the bug and found that his Verizon logs showed no record of a call being placed to 911. This prompted Google to start its own investigation into the issue that is thankfully not widespread at the moment.

So what caused this issue? A Pixel Community account revealed that the bug was spotted on devices where the users had installed Microsoft Teams but hadn’t logged in with any account. It added that an “unintended interaction” between the app and Android prevented emergency calls from being made. So now, both Google and Microsoft are promptly working on a fix as of right now.

Microsoft has announced that they will be integrating Mesh, the next step in the evolution of Microsoft Teams. The Mesh will be an interactive platform for virtual experiences inside the Teams platform. This announcement comes just days after Facebook reincarnated to Meta and revealed its future vision for a metaverse.

Microsoft Mesh appears to be the next step in AR technology. Some new features revealed by Microsoft consist of a ‘Together Mode’ which is designed to create a virtual avatar of a person that will aid in better engagement during meetings. The idea was inspired after seeing so many users experience pandemic fatigue due to excess screen time.

Microsoft Teams will be equipped with new 3D avatars to facilitate a metaverse environment, which won’t require a VR headset. These avatars can represent the user, both in 2D and 3D meetings. This provides the user with the option of not turning on the webcam if he or she doesn’t want to. “It’s not binary, so a person can choose how they want to show up, whether it’s video or an avatar, and there’s a variety of customized options to choose from, as to how one wants to be presented in a meeting,” says Katie Kelly, principal product manager for Microsoft Mesh.

Additionally, according to Katie Kelly, these technologies, or should we say prototypes work better with VR or AR headsets, these features will be accessible by most of the devices. Also, because it is based on realistic experiences, the human presence such as talking, eye contact, and reactions are going to be important. This upgrade also focuses on removing language barriers by including a built-in app translation support, which will be a blessing in the post-pandemic scenario wherein companies have remote workers across the globe. The great news is that Microsoft has promised that these features are going to be accessible as soon as early 2022.

The addition of this feature will enable the corporations to model their own virtual spaces, or metaverses inside Teams. This seems to be Microsoft’s own metaverse.

Microsoft has announced a couple of new accessories for PCs. The new products were launched under its Modern line and include headphones, a USB-C speaker, and a webcam.

Microsoft Modern USB Headset and Modern Wireless Headset

Microsoft has two new headphones – the Modern USB Headset and the Modern Wireless Headset. As the name says, one is wired and the other is wireless. Both come in black, have beamforming microphones, and 28mm moving-coil speakers.

The wired one has a USB-A connector and an in-line remote with buttons for volume adjustment, a microphone mute button, and a Microsoft Teams button for easy setup and management.

The wireless version has similar buttons on the earcups but the volume control is via an adjustable right earcup. It also has a status light that shows if your microphone is muted. Microsoft says that battery life is up to 50 hours (30 hours with voice calling on Microsoft Teams).

The wired version works with Windows and macOS devices and is priced at $49.99 while the wireless version adds support for Android and iOS, and will sell for $99.99.

Microsoft Modern USB-C Speaker

The Microsoft Modern USB-C Speaker is designed for meeting rooms or use case scenarios where more than one person is on a Teams call. It connects via USB-C and has the same buttons as the in-line remote of the wired headset.

The speaker has a 50mm full-range driver and two omnidirectional microphones. It is covered in black fabric and has a 68 centimeter-long cable. The Modern USB-C speaker is compatible with Windows and macOS devices. It is priced at $99.99.

Microsoft Modern Webcam

The Modern Webcam comes in black too. It features high-quality videos with HDR and True Look and also has autofocus. The camera can record in 1080p and has a 78° field of view. There is also a privacy shutter that you can slide over the lens when not in use. It can be attached to your monitor, laptop, or tripod. It connects to your device via a USB-A cord.

Microsoft has put a price tag of $69.99 on the webcam and just like the other accessories, it will be available in June.

Smart displays have been in existence for a few years now. They can perform the functions of a smart speaker and even more such as play videos, make video calls, and more. Now, there is a new category of smart display that has been specially created for Microsoft Teams called Microsoft Teams Displays.

The best way to describe a Microsoft Team Display is as a desk phone with a touchscreen and smart features. It is powered by Cortana and seamlessly works with your PC. Microsoft says they are designed to handle video-conferencing and content viewing, and thus freeing your computer for work.

You can ask the smart display to join a meeting on Teams, add contacts to a meeting, and more.

Lenovo has a Microsoft Teams Display Device called the ThinkSmart View and it shares a striking resemblance to the Lenovo Smart Display 8.

Priced at $349, the ThinkSmart View has an 8-inch HD touch display, a 1.75” 10W full-range speaker with two passive tweeters, far-field microphones, and an HD camera with a privacy shutter. The description says it is built on the Microsoft Teams platform and the spec sheet says it runs Android AOSP 8.1. It has Bluetooth 4.2 and also supports dual-band Wi-Fi. If you need one, you can grab one on the Microsoft online store.

There will also be another Microsoft Smart Display from Yealink (pictured above beside the Lenovo ThinkSmart) later this year. It is shown to have a different design but the screen seems to be 8-inches too. There is no news of a Surface-branded Microsoft Teams Display yet but we may see one in the future.
