Mediatek and Qualcomm are the two major chip makers in the world, while we do have others such as Samsung’s Exynos and Huawei’s Kirin, majority of devices are sporting either a MTK chipset or a Snapdragon processor.

Qualcomm has always taken the lead in chip shipment in the Chinese mainland market, but analyst Pan Jiutang posted on his Weibo page that for the second quarter of this year Mediatek has claimed the top spot thanks to the success of the Helio series (save for the weak performance of the Helio P20 which has cost them OPPO and Vivo’s order) and more sales from online and offline brands.

But the increase in shipments is not being celebrated as the company’s gross margin has dropped to its lowest level (35%) in a decade. The company is still facing issues with regards to performance, process, and average selling price. They are also still dealing with supply issues which will still show up in the second half of the year.

RELATED: Mediatek’s COO Confirms Helio X30 Specs

Mediatek also needs to make sure they have a major breakthrough in the high-end market come 2017 or else that share of the market will be fully owned by Qualcomm.

More choice and options has got to be a good thing and these custom ROMs certainly offer all that. Mediatek devices are massively popular and there are numerous Custom ROMs built for them. These instructions show you how to install them safely and effectively. It is especially important for beginners to read instructions carefully to prevent failure or loss of data, but provided some care is taken, it is not a difficult task and enables you to get so much more out of your device.

Things you need to do and have:

Your phone must be rooted. If it is not rooted then use framaroot and root your phone before undertaking any customisation.

You must have full backup of your current or stock ROM. This is helpful if you donot liked the custom ROM and you want to revert back. Then just reflash the backup. To take backup of current or stock ROM the easiest method is to install CWM from here for your MTK device very easily and then create backup. Backup is important in case there is a problem with the new installation or if you dislike the custom interface and want to revert to the stock one.

USB Cable

Mobileuncle MTK tools from here or direct download from here.

SP Flash Tools setup and Device drivers from here

Any Custom ROM for your MTK Device

Here goes then, here’s how to do it.

Method 1. Using MobileUncle MTK Tools ( Level : Easy)

First of all install Mobileuncle MTK Tools from the above link on your phone.

Select update option and the device will automatically find the zip file located on your SD card.

Then select the ROM and tap on ‘Analysis Update Package End’ and wait for Mobileuncle to do its job.

Your phone will automatically restart after completion and there you have it, you’re good to go with the Custom ROM.

Method 2. Using CWM which you installed on your MTK phone from our previous post. Slightly more difficult approach but fine for users with a bit of experience.

Boot into CWM recovery by two ways : 1. Power on + volume down 2. Using Mobile MTK tools select ‘Boot into recovery’

Now first of all Wipe your current system data and then wipe the cache, found in the ‘Wipe’ Section

Then tap on Install Update from Zip file

Select ‘zip from SD card’

Browse to find and tap to select the custom ROM

Once the installation completes you will need to reboot your device

Enjoy!

Mediatek-powered devices can struggle with this feature but the service can be improved by tweaking the setting on your phone. If you have one of the following running your device this tutorial can help you get the most out of your phone’s GPS: MTK6592, MTK6582, MTK6589, MTK 6577 and MTK6575.

Before you start you need to make sure you have a ROOTED Android phone, uninterrupted internet connection and the GPS Test Application (available from Play Store).

Once you’ve got what you need and you’re ready to get started, these are the steps to a better GPS.

1. First of all enable the Internet Connection on your phone

2. Next go to ‘Settings’ then tap on ‘Google’ then select ‘Location Settings’ and make sure ‘Let Google apps access your location’ is set to ‘ON’.

3. Choose the option of ‘Location Access’. Make sure that All the options available there are Checked “ON”. as you can see in the image: You can also do get to the same stage by choosing ‘Settings’ and then ‘Location Access’ if you prefer.

4. Next, in ‘Settings’ go to ‘Location Access’, and open ‘GPS satellites’. Then you can enable ‘GPS EPO assistance’ as shown in the picture below.

5. Next go to ‘EPO settings’, which looks like this and set the EPO data to download.

6. Now Enable AGPS GPS.

This should mean you have GPS enabled on your MTK device. To check all is well, however, you can test the feature. To do this you need to Install ‘GPS Test’ from the link in the initial instructions at the beginning of the article.

7. If you have it, in the GPS Test App, tap Menu/Settings and check screen always on.

8. Be in your home and start the application and see the bar graph going up and down. You will see something like this

But if this doesn’t work then try going out and moving around, if these graphs start to move, all is well and you’re good to go. After you’ve completed these steps you should have a capable GPS system and be confident enough to actually rely on it.

Mediatek chipset made increasingly being used by Android-based smartphones. Not only at a lower level but also began to explore the upper class because they are already qualified.

If talking about the 4 core processors in smartphones, most people is always thinking about the popular chipset products from Qualcomm or Nvidia. However Mediatek also want to show off in the mobile chipset lineup.

This was evidenced by MT6589 chipset, in which already existing quad core processor that has 1.2 GHz clock-speed which is ready to compete with Qualcomm and Nvidia.

“The performance we can compete, even based on the results of the experiment MT6589 is a quadcore processor cooler than most others,” claims Finbarr Moynihan, General Manager of International Sales and Marketing Mediatek.

In an experiment, Mediatek ‘punish’ a number of quad-core processors, including the MT6589 their products.

From the results of these experiments are shown Mediatek chip is not much temperature rise at full load, while its competitors chip temperature increased significantly.

It is said that that was one of the considerations for the Acer Liquid E2 which using Mediatek quad-core chipset, this Android phones is offers just only $200 USD.
