When Nintendo announced the Switch Lite, many were disappointed that the company didn’t release a proper sequel to the Switch. Instead, we got a cutdown version that was more affordable. But since its release, gamers have warmed up to it quite a bit. But is it worth buying in 2024? Let’s find out.

Nintendo Switch Lite: What makes it special?

One of the biggest selling points of the Nintendo Switch Lite was its cost. Unlike its elder sibling, it currently sells for under 200 US Dollars. The Nintendo Switch is already more affordable than a PlayStation or Xbox, so the Lite model being cheaper makes it a great entry point to the Nintendo library of games.

The Switch series has often faced criticism for featuring outdated or relatively weaker hardware compared to other handheld consoles. However, you’re not buying the Switch Lite for the performance, it is for its iconic game franchises. Anywhere from Mario to the Legends of Zelda, Nintendo has a powerful lineup exclusive to its platform.

Cons of the Switch Lite

For 100 dollars less, the brand did cut certain corners. Thankfully, the Switch Lite offers identical performance to the regular Switch. Both models are equipped with the Nvidia Tegra X1 processor. But the differences are immediately apparent with its design. Nintendo’s Switch Lite features a shorted 5.5-inch LCD panel compared to the 6.2-inch HD LCD screen on the base model.

If you spend a little more, you can even opt for the Switch OLED. Remember the removable controllers that the Switch is known for? The Lite doesn’t offer those either, lacking versatility. So you miss out on some of the charm of certain titles and the IRL multiplayer aspect in some games. Storage also takes a hit with a smaller 32GB onboard storage, which is half of the capacity of the regular Switch.

So is the Switch Lite worth buying in 2024?

Despite being a watered down version of the Nintendo Switch, the Switch Lite is an attractive option for entry level gaming. It is especially perfect for those who need an affordable handheld gaming console. Casual gamers looking to experience titles with legendary legacies like Mario can get a cheap entry into the Nintendo universe thanks to the Switch Lite.

While you do miss the removable Joy-Cons, the Switch Lite weighs over 100 grams lighter. This means that holding it in your hand and carrying it around is a breeze. Buyers also get support for digital and physical games, expandable storage, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and Nintendo Switch online. Everything which you also get on the more expensive Switch. To summarize, get the Switch Lite if you’re looking to enter the Nintendo gaming library (One of the best in the market) or get the Switch OLED if you have money to spare. You can even consider waiting for the Switch 2 if you’re a die-hard Nintendo fan, since it is touted to finally get some hardware improvements.

The competition in the handheld gaming console market is getting stronger every day. Almost every day, another manufacturer is moving into this space, trying to get a share of the market that is currently dominated by Nintendo Switch. For instance, we recently shared that Lenovo was working on a new handheld device called Legion Go. It seems the increasing competition has not just caught our attention but Nintendo’s as well.

According to emerging information, Nintendo is speeding up its work on the Switch 2 to stay strong in the competition, and plans to introduce the new generation handheld console in the second half of 2024. The new model, known to be backward compatible with older games, will be missing a key feature that the company had introduced a while ago. Here are the details…

Nintendo Switch 2: What We Know So Far

According to information obtained by Video Games Chronicle, Nintendo will introduce the Switch 2 in the second quarter of 2024. It’s said that the reason the company is waiting so long is because it doesn’t want to be affected by the chip crisis that occurred during the pandemic. As you know, both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X were released during this time, and it became a real struggle for customers to buy these consoles. In fact, the market was dominated by “opportunists” for a long time, and scalping was very popular until recently.

However, not all developments may please users. As you know, Nintendo introduced the OLED version of the Switch in 2021. This version, which isn’t very different from the original product in terms of technical features, was preferred by many users due to its superior screen. But the latest information shows that the Nintendo Switch 2 may come with an LCD screen instead of OLED. Of course, the console will still be able to connect to other screens. Therefore, if you own a high-quality OLED monitor, you can always play games with a dock.

The good news is the backwards compatibility. The Nintendo Switch 2 will run your digital and physical games without any problems. This way, your library that you spent a fortune on will be accessible for you, and you can replay the games you played in low quality due to the inadequate hardware of the console that came out in 2018, but now in a smooth way.

It’s worth noting that there is no confirmed release date for the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2024 at the moment. The report by VGC is based on leaks from sources in the industry and estimates by experts like Dr. Serkan Toto. However, the fact that so many sources are saying similar things does make the claims stronger. Unfortunately, we don’t have detailed information about the price or other technical specifications yet. But more information on this topic is expected to emerge in the future.

The eighth-generation console wars have come to an end with the introduction of the PS5 and the Xbox Series S/X. Sony, with the PS4, was the company that managed to sell the most products. Although the Xbox side did not meet expectations, the real surprise came from Nintendo. The Switch, introduced in 2017, exceeded everyone’s expectations and has become the popular handheld console that has outsold the PS4. Here are the details…

The Nintendo Switch has outsold the PS4, but Nintendo sees tougher times ahead

According to the latest reports, the Nintendo Switch has sold over 122.5 million units as of the end of 2022, surpassing both the legendary Game Boy and Sony’s PlayStation 4 to become the third best-selling gaming console of all time. However, looking at the last nine months of 2022, we see that sales have dropped to 14.91 million from 18.95 million during the same period the previous year. Additionally, total revenue has declined by 5.6%.

There are two basic reasons for this. Firstly, game sales fell by 4% despite the release of the new Pokemon Scarlet/Violet titles (which totaled an impressive 20.61 million units), unable to offset the decline. The second reason is the inability to supply enough products in the market due to the global chip crisis. Although the number of products has increased with the disappearance of the pandemic from our lives, this time demand has decreased.

Although the company has lowered its expectations for next year, exclusive games could change that. Titles like Zelda, which has a massive fanbase, can drive much higher console sales on its own. Another highlight in the company’s report is the preference of users. While sales of the Nintendo Switch with an OLED screen increased, there was a decrease in sales of the standard and lite models. This indicates that users want better and more powerful hardware.

It’s worth remembering that the Nintendo Switch just surpassing the PlayStation 4 in sales does not mean it is taking the lead in the eighth-generation console wars. Sony and Microsoft have prioritized the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, while Nintendo has not yet shown a new console that it is working on and continues to sell the device, which was released in 2017, with minor improvements. For this reason, it is possible to say that the PS4, which has sold approximately 120 million units, is still the winner!

Nintendo said last year that the transition to its next console is “a major focus for us,” and it could start becoming more urgent soon. It’ll be interesting to see if the Switch can hang around long enough to become the best selling console of all time, but Nintendo will have to sell around 33 million more units to surpass the PlayStation 2.

The Switch consoles have Bluetooth, but prior to the release of this update, users could only connect compatible controllers to the consoles but never an audio device. Four years after the Switch was released, this new update now allows users to connect their Bluetooth wireless headphones and speakers to their consoles.

If you are wondering how to connect your favorite Bluetooth earphones (and or speaker), this guide should make it easy for you. Below are the steps to get your Bluetooth devices connected to your Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch Lite:

Step 1 – Check that your Switch is running the latest software version

To be able to pair your Bluetooth audio device, you have to confirm that your device is updated to the latest software version. Below are the steps to check the software version your console is running:

Go to System Settings on your Nintendo Switch console. To do this, select the Gear Icon at the bottom of the screen.

Scroll down to System, and you should see the current version of your console on the right side of the screen.

To be able to connect a Bluetooth audio device, your console must be running version 13.0.0 and above. So if your device is running a lower version, you have to update your device. If your device is running version 13.0.0 and above, you can jump to step 3.

Step 2 – Update your Nintendo Switch

To update your Nintendo Switch console, simply tap ‘System Update’. Your system should check for an update and download one if there is. Your device will need to restart once the update is downloaded and installed.

Step 3 – Connect your Bluetooth Audio Device

Once you are running the required version for Bluetooth audio device support, follow the steps below to connect your Bluetooth audio device.

Go to System Settings as described in step 1.

Scroll down on the left pane to the bottom of the screen. You should see a new menu called Bluetooth Audio.

Select Pair Device on the right pane. If you have AirPlane Mode turned on, it will ask you to turn it off.

Put on your Bluetooth audio device and make sure it is in pairing mode.
Your Nintendo Switch will search for available Bluetooth devices.

Once you see your Bluetooth device, select it and the console will be paired to it.

As an owner of a Nintendo Switch Lite, it came as a surprise to find out that it was impossible to connect a Bluetooth audio device to the handheld console. However, it was possible to connect compatible controllers via Bluetooth. So, it has Bluetooth but you just can’t use it for audio. While an audio jack is present on the console, it would be nice to be able to connect wireless headphones instead.

There is actually a solution – a Bluetooth dongle that connects into the headphone jack or the USB-C port which you can then pair your wireless audio devices to. Never came around to buying one, probably because I was still angry at Nintendo for its silly decision not to have added Bluetooth audio support out of the box.

If you didn’t buy one too, then you are in luck as Nintendo has released an update that activates Bluetooth audio across its Switch lineup. Yes, you can now connect your favorite Bluetooth headphones to your Switch and enjoy your favorite games without disturbing others.

The update is already rolling out to the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite. However, we do not know if the Nintendo Switch (OLED Model) will have the feature activated right out of the box when it becomes available for purchase on October 8 or users will have to update it too.

While it is disappointing that it took Nintendo 4 years (2 for the Lite model) before it activated a feature that should have been available out of the box, we are glad it is now available. Do you own a Switch and have you updated it to try out the feature? Do let us know in the comment box below. Here is hoping that Nintendo’s next move is to permanently discount its first-party games that are more than 2 years old. Breath of The Wild for $29.99, anyone?

Just like the other four colors, the new blue Switch Lite will have a suggested retail price of $199.99. The color difference is the chassis, so you still get white buttons like on the others.

Nintendo says that new color will be available next month, starting May 21. You will be able to purchase it on the Nintendo online store as well as at partner stores such as Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, and Target.

The Japanese manufacturer has also announced that its upcoming game, Miitopia, will also be announced on May 21, the same day the new colorway goes on sale. It is an adventure game that you can play with family and friends.

Before Miitopia drops, Nintendo will release the New Pokémon Snap game for the Nintendo Switch devices on April 30. This game allows you to visit different islands and photograph different Pokémon in their natural habitat.
