<p><a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/Samsung">Samsung</a> remained the biggest individual brand with a market share of 20%, followed by Apple with a share of 14% and Xiaomi with a share of 13% (via <a href="https://www.counterpointresearch.com/infographic-q3-2021/">Counterpoint Research</a>). However, BBK Electronics grabs the top spot when the market shares of all of its brands (<a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/OPPO">OPPO</a>, <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/vivo">vivo</a>, <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/Oneplus">OnePlus</a>, <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/realme">realme</a>) are combined – holding 25% of the shipments.</p>

<p>Counterpoint further revealed to <a href="https://nokiamob.net/2021/12/12/nokia-mobile-shipped-almost-3-million-smartphones-in-q3-2021/">Nokiamob</a> that <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/nokia">Nokia</a> shipped almost 3 million smartphones in Q3 2021, representing a growth of 12% compared to Q2 2021. But it gets even more impressive when the shipments are compared to Q3 2020 as the growth then sharply rises to 37%.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-large wp-image-430557 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/HMD-NOkia-Q3-2021-1024x513.png?x44794" alt="" width="696" height="349" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/HMD-NOkia-Q3-2021.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/HMD-NOkia-Q3-2021-300x150.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/HMD-NOkia-Q3-2021-768x385.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/HMD-NOkia-Q3-2021-696x349.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/HMD-NOkia-Q3-2021-838x420.png 838w" sizes="(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px" /></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The rise has been driven by the Middle East, Africa, and North America where the exit of LG has left quite some shoes to be filled. Still, in terms of global smartphone makers ranking, Nokia Mobile retained the 14th spot.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-large wp-image-430556 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/HMD-Nokia-FP-sales-Q3-2021-1024x564.png?x44794" alt="" width="696" height="383" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/HMD-Nokia-FP-sales-Q3-2021.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/HMD-Nokia-FP-sales-Q3-2021-300x165.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/HMD-Nokia-FP-sales-Q3-2021-768x423.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/HMD-Nokia-FP-sales-Q3-2021-696x383.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/HMD-Nokia-FP-sales-Q3-2021-763x420.png 763w" sizes="(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px" /></p>
<p>As for feature phones, Nokia Mobile remained the 2nd largest vendor, shipping around 10 million units in Q3 2021. This, combined with smartphone sales, churns out a 13 million figure in total, making Nokia the 11th biggest phone vendor on the planet. But even with the growth, the company has actually slipped two places compared to the previous quarter.</p>

This isn&#8217;t surprising since Nokia was once the king of the smartphone market. However, the last decade wasn&#8217;t too good for the company, with losses increasing and its decision to stick with Microsoft&#8217;s Windows platform leading to its ultimate demise. We&#8217;ve all dreamed about an Android based Nokia smartphone in the past, with Finnish company&#8217;s solid hardware and design and Google&#8217;s open source platform. While we haven&#8217;t really seen a real Nokia based Android smartphone in the past, this is soon going to change.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-81104" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Nokia.png?x44794" alt="Nokia" width="512" height="512" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Nokia.png 512w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Nokia-150x150.png 150w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Nokia-300x300.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px" /></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>After the establishment of the new &#8216;Nokia Technologies&#8217; company, we have <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/2016/02/21/nokia-confirmed-to-re-enter-smartphone-market/">heard multiple times that it wasn&#8217;t going to enter the smartphone market directly</a>. There wasn&#8217;t much information in the past about its plans for this market, but now, things have become a lot clearer.</p>
<p>We are definitely going to see Nokia Android smartphones in the coming months.</p>
<p>Nokia Technologies revealed today that it has given exclusive global license to HMD Global, a startup company based out of its own home country of Finland. This means that HMD Global can now manufacture smartphones as well as tablets bearing the Nokia brand name. In return, Nokia Technologies gets royalty for using its name. The company also has conditionally agreed to acquire rights to use the Nokia name from Microsoft.</p>
<figure id="attachment_45332" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-45332" style="width: 440px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-45332" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/nokia-concept-image-1.jpg?x44794" alt="nokia concept image 1" width="440" height="330" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/nokia-concept-image-1.jpg 440w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/nokia-concept-image-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/nokia-concept-image-1-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/nokia-concept-image-1-100x75.jpg 100w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/nokia-concept-image-1-180x135.jpg 180w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/nokia-concept-image-1-238x178.jpg 238w" sizes="(max-width: 440px) 100vw, 440px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-45332" class="wp-caption-text">nokia android concept image</figcaption></figure>
<p>At the same time, Microsoft is selling its feature phone business to FIH Mobile, a subsidiary of Foxconn for $350 million. The deal is expected to close by the second half of 2016. And guess what, FIH and HMD Global have entered into a collaborative deal which gives full operational control of sales, marketing and distribution of Nokia branded smartphones globally.</p>
<p>So, it looks like finally things have come together to revive Nokia&#8217;s smartphone business. The company also confirms that Nokia smartphones and tablets will be based on Android, which is what we wanted from the start.</p>
<p>In case you are wondering, Nokia Technologies will have a seat on the board of HMD Global to ensure that the quality and reputation of Nokia&#8217;s name is maintained. Given that HMD Global is founded by ex-Nokia employees, we can expect great design on the upcoming Nokia branded smartphones. The company also confirmed that ex-Nokia executive and current head of Microsoft&#8217;s Mobile Division Business for Greater Asia, Middle East and Africa, Arto Nummela will be the CEO of HMD.</p>

The company&#8217;s smartphone business was sold out to Microsoft at just over $7 billion in 2014, after which only a small portion of the original company was left. However, Nokia has been busy working and developing its other projects, like <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/2016/02/09/nokia-will-present-mwc-2016-dont-get-excited/">4.5G / 5G technology</a> and acquiring the network equipment manufacturer Alcatel-Lucent recently.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/nokia-concept-image-3.jpg?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-45330" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/nokia-concept-image-3.jpg?x44794" alt="nokia concept image 3" width="440" height="274" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/nokia-concept-image-3.jpg 440w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/nokia-concept-image-3-300x187.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 440px) 100vw, 440px" /></a></p>
<p>Given that Microsoft&#8217;s contract barred the company from entering the smartphone industry for a couple of years, Nokia was tight-lipped about any future plans to re-enter the industry. However, at MWC 2016, which is currently going on in Barcelona, Spain, Rajeev Suri, the CEO of Nokia, confirmed plans to re-enter the smartphone industry. This is definitely good news for all loyal Nokia fans still out there, wanting to see the manufacturer of their first phones, make a comeback in the market.</p>
<p>However, Rajeev didn&#8217;t give out a timeline for a smartphone release. The company can reportedly start selling smartphones under its name from Q4 2016, but we are not quite sure whether we will see handset from the company so soon. His exact words were &#8220;There&#8217;s no timeline, there&#8217;s no rush. It could happen in 2016, it could happen later.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/nokia-n1-tablet.jpg?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-73228" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/nokia-n1-tablet.jpg?x44794" alt="nokia n1 tablet" width="1600" height="1066" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/nokia-n1-tablet.jpg 1600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/nokia-n1-tablet-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/nokia-n1-tablet-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/nokia-n1-tablet-600x400.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/nokia-n1-tablet-630x420.jpg 630w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/nokia-n1-tablet-640x426.jpg 640w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/nokia-n1-tablet-681x454.jpg 681w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /></a></p>
<p>Less than a year after Microsoft&#8217;s acquisition, Nokia released its first tablet, the Nokia N1 based on Android. The company partnered with Foxconn to build the N1 tablet and we could see a similar strategy where the company controls the design for its upcoming products.</p>
<p>Anyways, this clears a lot of doubts regarding Nokia&#8217;s re-entry into the smartphone industry. Now, the question has changed from &#8220;Whether Nokia will enter the industry&#8221; to &#8220;When they will launch a new smartphone&#8221;. Like CEO said, it could be this year, or maybe next. But for now, we wait and watch.</p>

However, if you were hoping to see some new Android smartphones from the company at the event, you will most likely be disappointed.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/Nokia-Mobile-World-Congress.jpg?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-72298" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/Nokia-Mobile-World-Congress.jpg?x44794" alt="Nokia-Mobile-World-Congress" width="660" height="253" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/Nokia-Mobile-World-Congress.jpg 660w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/Nokia-Mobile-World-Congress-300x115.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/Nokia-Mobile-World-Congress-600x230.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/Nokia-Mobile-World-Congress-640x245.jpg 640w" sizes="(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px" /></a></p>
<p>Nokia has a handful of projects under development and some of them would be showcased at the upcoming tech event in Barcelona. Ever since the sale of its smartphone business to Microsoft, Nokia has shifted its focus on network infrastructure. So, we can expect new tech in this field by the company.</p>
<p>Nokia recently announced a new security product in the market, called Netguard Security Management Software. The company confirms that this new product will be showcased at MWC this year.</p>
<p>Netguard is a software designed to monitor and control all the security components of a network. So, instead of securing just individual devices, the software secures the network as a whole. It monitors all IoT devices in the network for malware and other attacks and secures the entire system. The company also adds that it is ready to sell the product to any brand of networks.</p>
<p>Another interesting tech from Nokia to be shown off at MWC will be the LTE Advanced Pro. The new network promises a significant increase in transfer speeds, using the existing network infrastructure. The LTE-A Pro will use special algorithms to speed up uploads at twice the existing rate and downloads at thrice the rate. This could be an important tech as it enables existing network carriers to squeeze more out of their existing infrastructure. So, no need to install costly new age components for increased speeds, at least, not at the moment.</p>
<p>As for smartphones, we may see Nokia branded phones sometime later this year. We have seen <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/2016/01/11/nokias-purported-metal-android-smartphone-leaks/">some renders of a possible Nokia smartphone</a>, but they are not yet confirmed. In fact, the eventual return of the company to smartphone business is still a debated topic.</p>
