It&#8217;s basically a permanently folded curved screen device. Looking at its beautiful curved display, we may assume that it&#8217;s from big-league OLED makers like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a>, LG, or even <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/BOE">BOE</a>. But turns out, Xiaomi worked very closely with China&#8217;s Visionox to bring this curved screen design to reality.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/xiaomi-mix-alpha-pic-6.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-278356" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/xiaomi-mix-alpha-pic-6.png?x10805" alt="" width="499" height="519" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/xiaomi-mix-alpha-pic-6.png 499w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/xiaomi-mix-alpha-pic-6-288x300.png 288w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/xiaomi-mix-alpha-pic-6-404x420.png 404w" sizes="(max-width: 499px) 100vw, 499px" /></a></p>
<p>A top-rated digital blogger and supply chain source, Mocha revealed on Weibo earlier today that <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/visionox">Visionox</a> and Xiaomi developed the Mi Mix Alpha concept together. So it was none of the big names like Samsung or BOE (Mate X <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/05/24/huawei-boe-partnering-8-inch-foldable-display-smartphone/">display supplier</a>) that brought such an experimental design close to a commercial release. Xiaomi&#8217;s product director Wang Teng Thomas didn&#8217;t deny this claim. He replied to the post saying that Xiaomi works with multiple OLED panel makers including Visionox.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Screenshot-2019-09-25-at-9.02.53-PM.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-278691" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Screenshot-2019-09-25-at-9.02.53-PM.png?x10805" alt="visionox mi mix alpha supplier comment" width="449" height="264" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Screenshot-2019-09-25-at-9.02.53-PM.png 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Screenshot-2019-09-25-at-9.02.53-PM-300x177.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 449px) 100vw, 449px" /></a></p>
<p>Visionox may not be a household name when it comes to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/OLED">OLEDs</a>, but the company&#8217;s roots go back to the strong OLED project team of Tsinghua University, one of the most prestigious universities for science and technology in the world. What&#8217;s even more interesting is that he revealed Visionox is also going to supply OLEDs to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei">Huawei</a> very soon.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/08/27/huami-unveils-the-amazfit-x-concept-watch-with-a-flexible-curved-display/">Huami unveils the Amazfit X Concept Watch with a flexible curved display</a></strong></h6>
<p>It looks like Visionox has become China&#8217;s new favorite for developing experimental displays. Apart from the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-mi-mix-alpha/">Mi Mix Alpha</a> concept, Visionox is also supplying flexible OLEDs for Xiaomi&#8217;s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/03/27/xiaomis-foldable-smartphone-features-in-official-video-teaser/">dual folding smartphone</a>. Further, the flexible AMOLED display for <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/zte-axon-10-pro/">ZTE&#8217;s Axon 10 Pro</a> is also supplied by the same company.</p>

<p>But Visionox is also part of another experimental product, coincidentally, also called as the Alpha. In case you still haven&#8217;t figured it out, I&#8217;m talking about the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/zte-nubia-alpha/">Nubia Alpha</a>, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/02/26/nubia-alpha-foldable-watch-phone-announced/">foldable watch shaped smartphone</a>, that features a four-inch flexible display from Visionox. The Chinese OLED maker currently has around 6,000 OLED patents to its name and has two plants, one in Gu&#8217;an, Hebei province, and another one in Hefei, Anhui province for manufacturing flexible OLED panels.</p>

<p>The Nubia Alpha has courted a lot of interests since the device was first showcased as MWC 2019. The official launch in China a few days back again rekindled interests in the model. The design and innovation which the device brings to the table. The innovation comes at a costly price, though, but that seems not to have affected the sales. The  Alpha starts at 3,499 Yuan (~$520) for the black variant with eSIM. There is an 18k gold-plated edition with a price tag of 4,499 Yuan (~$669).<img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-246182" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/nubia-alpha-sale.jpg?x10805" alt="Nubia Alpha" width="563" height="1000" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/nubia-alpha-sale.jpg 563w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/nubia-alpha-sale-169x300.jpg 169w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/nubia-alpha-sale-236x420.jpg 236w" sizes="(max-width: 563px) 100vw, 563px" /></p>

The smartwatch/fitness tracker is gradually gaining momentum. Nubia has taken the bar a notch higher with its wearable smartphone known as Nubia Alpha. Aptly put, the Alpha could be regarded as the first smartphone with the form factor of a smartwatch. Of course, there are smartwatches with some features found on a mobile phone but the Alpha is different in many ways. It can safely be called a smartphone whereas others can&#8217;t. The Nubia Alpha was officially unveiled in China yesterday with sales scheduled to commence on April 10. Here are some unboxing pictures of the feature-packed wearable phone.<img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-245893" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/nubia-alpha-5.jpg?x10805" alt="Nubia Alpha" width="600" height="399" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/nubia-alpha-5.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/nubia-alpha-5-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<p>To recap, the Nubia Alpha packs in a 4-inch flexible display that offers an aspect ratio of 36:9. The display can be wrapped on the wrist for use as a smartwatch and when unwrapped, it adopts a flat shape and can be used as a smartphone with a tall aspect ratio display. The interface is one of the beauties of the Alpha. It runs on Nubia’s custom-made AlphaOS and supports AIM (Air Interaction Mechanics) gestures that allow users to control the device without touching its screen.<img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-245891" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/nubia-alpha-3.jpg?x10805" alt="Nubia Alpha" width="600" height="399" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/nubia-alpha-3.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/nubia-alpha-3-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<p>Further, the Nubia Alpha is powered by a Snapdragon Wear 2011 processor paired with 1 GB of RAM. It has an inbuilt storage of 8 GB which can&#8217;t be expanded. On the camera end, there is a 5MP f2.2 aperture camera by the side of the display and the samples captured by the sensor are pretty decent. Away from the features of a smartphone, the wearable also packs all the features you&#8217;ll find on a smartwatch/fitness tracker such as a heart rate sensor, sleep tracking, pedometer etc. Nubia Alpha comes with Bluetooth but there is a version with eSIM support. <img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-245892" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/nubia-alpha-4.jpg?x10805" alt="Nubia Alpha" width="600" height="399" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/nubia-alpha-4.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/nubia-alpha-4-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<p style="text-align: center"><strong>Read Also: <a title="First Sample from Nubia Alpha’s tiny 5MP camera doesn’t disappoint" href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/04/05/first-sample-from-nubia-alphas-tiny-5mp-camera-doesnt-disappoint/" rel="bookmark">First Sample from Nubia Alpha’s tiny 5MP camera doesn’t disappoint</a></strong></p>
<p>The Nubia Alpha has got a beautiful design but we can&#8217;t say if there is a market for what Nubia is offering. The industry is witnessing a shift from small screen smartphones to large display models. 4-inch smartphones are almost extinct so we don&#8217;t see how the Nubia Alpha will be of any value except for mainly fitness tracking. We&#8217;ll have to see how this pans out. Meanwhile, you can check out more photos of the Alpha from below.</p>

The wearable device looks more like a concept device with its foldable display and smartphone features crammed into a smartwatch design. However, the phone isn&#8217;t just a concept but will actually <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/04/01/nubia-alpha-set-to-debut-on-april-8-in-china/">meet with us on April 8 when it will be launched</a> in China. Ahead of the launch, Nubia&#8217;s co-founder and G, Ni Fei has released a camera sample which he says was shot using the minuscule Nubia Alpha&#8217;s camera. <img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-245249" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/nubia-alpha.png?x10805" alt="Nubia Alpha" width="598" height="297" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/nubia-alpha.png 598w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/nubia-alpha-300x149.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/nubia-alpha-324x160.png 324w" sizes="(max-width: 598px) 100vw, 598px" /></p>
<p>For the avoidance of doubt, the device comes with a 5MP camera for photos and video shooting. For a small sensor, the sample is pretty impressive with high clarity and attention to details. We don&#8217;t know much about the camera details like if there is autofocus, PDAF or the aperture size, among others. Ni Fei did share the EXIF data of the photo though, to convince us that it was indeed shot by the tiny wearable. The data shows the camera uses a resolution of 1080&#215;1920 pixels (FullHD).<img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-245248" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/nubia-alpha-2.jpg?x10805" alt="Nubia Alpha" width="690" height="552" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/nubia-alpha-2.jpg 690w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/nubia-alpha-2-300x240.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/nubia-alpha-2-525x420.jpg 525w" sizes="(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px" /></p>
<p>As a reminder, the Nubia Alpha features a 4-inch flexible OLED display but appears a lot bigger because of its ultra-wide aspect ratio. The display offers 960 x 192 pixels screen resolution and an aspect ratio that looks to be in the region of 5:1 or 49:9. Under the hood, the device is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 chipset, coupled with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage.</p>

<p>It also comes with fitness-related features such as sleep-tracking and health-assistant apps. The Nubia Alpha is fuelled by a 500mAh battery which promises a day or two of endurance, comparable to smartphones. It comes in two models, one with an eSIM while the other has only Bluetooth connectivity. Both models will be available in Black and Gold colours.</p>

<p>Nubia Alpha is a wearable device with a foldable display which looks to be acting like a smartphone. Basically, Nubia Alpha is more of a smartphone in the form factor of a smartwatch &#8212; a standalone wearable device.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-238301 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Nubia-Alpha.png?x10805" alt="Nubia Alpha" width="970" height="546" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Nubia-Alpha.png 970w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Nubia-Alpha-300x169.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Nubia-Alpha-768x432.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 970px) 100vw, 970px" /></p>
<p>It features a 4-inch flexible OLED display but appears a lot bigger because of its ultra-wide aspect ratio. The display offers 960 x 192 pixels screen resolution which seems to be offering 5:1 or 49:9 aspect ratio.</p>
<p>While the company addresses the device to be a smartphone, it actually is a smartwatch. Under the hood, the device is powered by Qualcomm <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2016/02/11/qualcomm-announces-the-snapdragon-wear-platform-and-wear-2100-chipset-for-wearables/">Snapdragon Wear 2100</a> chipset, coupled with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage.</p>
<p>It also comes with fitness-related features such as sleep-tracking and health-assistant apps. The device also features a 5-megapixel camera for taking photos and video recording. The Nubia Alpha is fuelled by a 500mAh battery which promises a day or two of endurance, comparable to smartphones.</p>
<p>As for the software, the device runs a custom operating system based on Android which comes with features like motion gestures and AIM (Air Interaction Mechanics) and also supports voice-based commands.</p>
<p>When released, the Nubia Alpha will be available in a couple of models and two color options &#8212; Black and Gold. The base model will have Bluetooth connectivity while the high-end model will offer eSIM compatibility.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The Bluetooth version of the Nubia Alpha will launch in April and it will cost €450 and will be offered only in Black color while the eSIM model will be €550 for the Black color and €650 if you want the Gold version. It will be available in China from April and then in Europe (in Q3) and North America (Q4).</p>
