Oppo is now rolling out the Android 13-based ColorOS 13 update for much older and less expensive smartphones worldwide. The Oppo A55 5G and Oppo A55s 5G are the latest such devices to get access to the new software.

Currently, the update is available in the beta form for these handsets. Also, it is limited to China.

Users of Oppo A55 5G and A55s 5G in China can head over to Settings to enroll themselves for the ColorOS 13 beta program. Selected applicants will receive the beta build via OTA.

Usually, Oppo takes about a month or more to deliver the stable build. Therefore, the final release for the general public should happen around April.

Both these phones were released with ColorOS 11 based on Android 11 though the s variant debuted more than a year after the regular model. Thus, ColorOS 13 is their second major software update as they got the Android 12-based ColorOS 12 update last year.

Since A55 and A55s are inexpensive smartphones, they will not receive any major software updates. However, they may continue receiving necessary security updates and bug fixes for a while.

The key spec highlights of these devices include a 6.5-inch HD+ display, a MediaTek Dimensity 700 chipset, a 13MP rear camera, an 8MP front-facing camera, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, a 5,000mAh battery, and 10W charging support.

Following the update plans shared by OPPO earlier this month, the company has started recruiting Android 12-based ColorOS 12 beta testers for two of its budget 5G smartphones. These devices are OPPO A53s 5G and OPPO A55 5G.

The OPPO A53s 5G and the OPPO A55 5G are the same phones for different markets. The former is sold in India, while the latter is available in China. Unsurprisingly, the latter model debuted first in January 2021, followed by the former in April 2021.

The handsets launched with ColorOS 11.1 based on Android 11. But now, Interested users can finally try out Android 12-based ColorOS 12 by joining the beta program.

In order to do so, the smartphones should be on the following required firmware versions.

• OPPO A53s 5G (India) – A.08 or A.09
• OPPO A55 5G (China) – A.15

If you meet the criteria, then head over to Settings > Software Update > Gear Icon > Apply for Beta Version > Update Beta Version and follow the on-screen instructions to enroll in the ColorOS 12 beta initiative. The registrations will only remain open until tomorrow (March 16).

There could be more batches in the future but we cannot tell that for sure. Hence, if you are truly interested, then register yourselves as soon as possible.

Selected applicants will receive the beta software via OTA. They may receive more than one build during the testing process, which will be followed by a stable build in the future.

OPPO recently confirmed that it would launch the OPPO F19s in India via Flipkart on September 27. The company has now teased the launch of a new A-series smartphone that would be launched on October 1 and will be sold exclusively on Amazon.in.

Although the teaser poster did not specify the name of the device, it is expected to be the OPPO A55 4G. The Oppo A55 5G had earlier been launched in some markets but this model is expected to bring support for 4G connectivity. The A55 5G packs a Dimensity 700 SoC but we expect this model to utilize a different chipset.

In terms of the design, earlier renders of the OPPO A55 4G shows that it will feature a triple camera setup at the rear with a slightly tweaked camera island. The camera system is placed vertically but it has the LED flash at the lower side of the camera island. It is also teased to pack a 50MP main camera lens.  The display will also house a punch-hole camera design which is different from the water-drop design on the predecessor.

The Oppo A55 4G is expected to have a big battery similar to the predecessor. It might be bigger than a 5,000mAh cell.  The device will come in Black, Green, and Gradient Blue color variants. The rest of the details of the smartphone are currently unknown.

OPPO has quietly launched a new budget 5G smartphone called OPPO A55 5G in China. The new device goes official after a few days from the release of OPPO A93 5G. Let us take a look at the specs, features, and price of this new OPPO phone.

OPPO A55 5G Specifications and Features

The newly announced OPPO A55 5G is powered by MediaTek Dimensity 700 SoC paired with 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. If needed, the memory can be further expanded up to 1TB via a MicroSD card.

On the front, the handset sports a 6.5-inch IPS LCD panel with a resolution of 1600 x 720 pixels (HD+) and a dewdrop notch. This screen has a 60Hz refresh rate, 60Hz touch sampling rate, 71% NTSC color gamut, 269 PPI, 1500:1 contrast ratio, and 480 nits peak brightness.

Talking about cameras, it comes with a vertically-aligned triple camera setup on the back consisting of a 13MP primary sensor, a 2MP macro shooter, and a 2MP sensor for portrait shots. Whereas, for selfies and video calls, there’s an 8MP snapper on the front.

On the connectivity front, the device supports 5G, dual-band WiFi 5, Bluetooth 5.1, GNSS (BeiDou, GALILEO, QZSS, GLONASS), a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a USB Type-C port. As for sensors, it houses a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, compass, ambient light sensor, accelerometer, proximity sensor, and gyroscope.

Lastly, the handset comes with model number PEMM00 in two colors (Brisk Blue, Rhythm Black), measures 163.9 x 75.7 x 8.4mm in dimensions, weighs 186g, runs ColorOS 11.1 based on Android 11, and is backed by a 5,000mAh battery with support for 10W charging.

OPPO A55 5G Pricing and Availability

The OPPO A55 5G is priced at ¥1,599 ($247) in the brand’s home country and is currently up for pre-order. It may make its way to global markets in the coming days as phones powered by MediaTek 5G chipsets have started launching outside mainland China.
