Redmi K50 series smartphones teaser confirms camera setup with Optical Image Stabilization

Redmi K50 series smartphones are set to be officially announced for the Chinese market tomorrow, i.e. on 17th March. Ahead of the launch, the company has been teasing key features of the upcoming phones.

In the latest teaser poster, the company has confirmed that all the models in the Redmi K50 series will come with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) in the rear camera setup. This will help users avoid or reduce shakiness while capturing photos or videos.

The company has revealed some key details so far through teaser posters. It recently confirmed that the Redmi K50 series phone will come packed with a 5,000mAh battery and have support for 120W fast charging to fully charge the phone within 20 minutes.

Prior to that, Redmi has confirmed that the smartphone will feature a display from Samsung with support for 2K screen resolution. It is claimed to have a pixel density of 526ppi and has support for several advanced adjustments.

It has also been confirmed that the Redmi K50 series phones will come with dual stereo speakers with support for Dolby Atmos and Hi-Res Double Gold certification. For connectivity, there’s dual-frequency GPS, Wi-Fi 6, NFC, IR blaster, and is said to be the first in the industry to support Bluetooth 5.3.

For those who are unaware, the Chinese company is expected to launch three models in the lineup tomorrow — Redmi K50, Redmi K50 Pro, and Redmi K50 Pro+. They will come powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 870, MediaTek Dimensity 8100, and MediaTek Dimensity 9000, respectively. The company has already launched Redmi K50 Gaming Edition which comes powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC.

South Korean tech giant Samsung is reportedly planning to start including Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) on the mid-range Galaxy A series from next year. Before now, OIS is only included in the flagship Galaxy S and Note series. However, the company had started including the feature on some of the upper models in the Galaxy A series.

Reports emanating from South Korea indicate that the company is now planning to expand the availability of OIS on its smartphones to the entire Galaxy A series models from next year. Optical image stabilization involves mounting a gyro sensor on the camera module which moves the lens in the opposite direction to counter any form of shakes or movements, thereby maintaining stability. OIS is usually applied to the main rear camera in most smartphones.

This year, the Galaxy A series models that came equipped with OIS include the Galaxy A72 packing a 64-megapixel camera, the Galaxy A52 also equipped with a 64-megapixel sensor, and the Galaxy A22 4G which packs a 48-megapixel camera. All other models in the series such as the Galaxy A32 4G/5G, Galaxy A22 5G, and Galaxy A42 utilize autofocus (AF) with lower performance than OIS.

Samsung has in recent times been losing market share to Chinese manufacturers such as Xiaomi who offer high-end smartphones at pocket-friendly prices. The move to expand the OIS usage is in a bid to strengthen the competitiveness of its mid-range segment. Even Apple is expected to bring OIS to the budget iPhone SE 5G that is rumored to be released later this year.

The Korean company recently invested 150 billion won in Jaeyoung Solutech, a secondary parts supplier for its smartphones. The company announced a few days back that it would enter the OIS camera module market with plans to supply OIS camera modules to Samsung Electronics as early as the fourth quarter.

Certain Galaxy A series phones are reported to come with OIS in 2021

It is a known fact that Samsung’s budget and mid-range smartphones sell more in quantity than its flagship Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series. Last year, the South Korean tech-giant restructured its budget handset offerings with new Galaxy M and revamped Galaxy A series. Now, according to a new report, some devices in the latter series will feature OIS starting 2021.

OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) is normally found on high-end premium smartphones. It does not make sense for manufacturers to include them in their budget models as it increases their retail price.

But now, as Samsung has to compete with a slew of Chinese competitors with better spec’d handsets and Apple’s iPhone SE 2020 in the budget department, it seems to have decided to include OIS in some of its Galaxy A series as per a report by The Elec (via Gadgets360).

According to the report, the first Galaxy A series of smartphones to come with OIS will be the successors to Galaxy A71, Galaxy A81 (Galaxy Note 10 Lite), and Galaxy A91 (Galaxy S10 Lite). All three of them are expected to launch next year.

Samsung is reported to turn towards Galaxy A series for profits as the sales of Galaxy S20 series has been sluggish this year as a result of the pandemic. The same effect is forecasted for upcoming premium devices and the only solution to keep its smartphone business profitable is by launching attractive mid-range devices with select features from flagships.

Apart from this, Samsung is also expected to launch Galaxy S20 FE/Lite in October, months earlier than its predecessor Galaxy S10 Lite.

OnePlus Nord will have OIS; photos of retail box revealed

A new detail about the OnePlus Nord has been revealed. According to a tweet by Ishan Agarwal, the phone will have optical image stabilization. The tweet was retweeted by OnePlus Co-founder, Carl Pei with the comment “Flagship camera incoming”.

Optical Image Stabilization or OIS for short is a feature commonly found in flagship phones. There are even a few flagship phones that have been released in the past that do not have the feature, so it is no surprise that OnePlus is bragging about its availability on its mid-range device.

OIS allows users to take shake-free photos. If you don’t have steady hands or you are taking a photo while moving, you will definitely find it very useful.

Other than the confirmation of the new feature, the retail box of the phone has also been revealed.

The OnePlus Nord will come in a black box, a first for the company whose previous phones ship in white or red (orange in the case of the McLaren edition phones) retail boxes. The top part of the box has the OnePlus logo at the corner while the word “Nord” is written multiple times in a much larger font. On the side of the box is written “OnePlus“.

The retail box is designed in such a way that you can see the teal/cyan color of the inside of the box. This is the same color OnePlus is using for the OnePlus logo for the Nord line but we are surprised the logo on the box doesn’t have that color.

In one of the images posted, OnePlus demonstrates the sturdiness of the box by having two people stand on top of it. This particular picture has gotten mixed reception with some defending it and others saying they really do not care how strong the box is since it is going to get discarded once the phone is out of it.

The OnePlus Nord launches on July 21 and the event will be the world’s first AR smartphone launch.

ZTE Hawkeye Specifications Revealed

The ZTE Hawkeye is a crowd sourced smartphone born from ZTE’s Project CSX (Crowd Sourced X) where ‘X’ is the mobile device you want ZTE to build next. In this case X stands for Hawkeye.

The ZTE Hawkeye was unveiled at this year’s edition of CES and we got to learn of some of its major features. There is the eye-tracking feature labelled Senseye which lets you scroll through webpages using only your eyes and the self-adhesive back that lets you stick the phone up on walls for a hands-free usage. Today ZTE has unveiled the technical details of the Hawkeye.

The phone will have a 5.5-inch display, 3GB RAM, 32GB ROM, a snapdragon 625 processor and a 3000mAh battery. It will have Quick Charge 2.0 support, a USB Type-C port, and dual hybrid SIM slots.

Just like the ZTE Blade V8 and Blade V8 Pro, the ZTE Hawkeye will also have dual rear cameras. One will be a 13MP sensor and the other will be a 12MP shooter and both cameras will have optical image stabilization. Don’t be confused, we know renders of the phone released by the company shows a phone with a single rear camera but ZTE has confirmed that it will indeed have dual-cameras.

The Hawkeye will have a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and will ship with Android Nougat out of the box. ZTE has also provided the 4G LTE bands the Hawkeye will support, so if your operator uses any of these bands (B2/B4/B5/B12(MFBI)/B7/B13/B66), you might want to set your sights on the ZTE Hawkeye.

The phone is listed on Kickstarter for $199. So if you are interested, you should go back it up. Do note that if the project doesn’t meet its $500,000 goal by February 19, 2017 it will not be funded. So as nice as the specs of the ZTE Hawkeye may sound, it may still not see the light of day.

iPhone 8 To Sport Dual Cameras With Auto Focus, Dual OIS, Analyst says

A tech analyst with KGI Securities, Ming-Chi Kuo has hinted that the upcoming Apple 2017 iPhone 8 flagship will likely feature dual cameras which on their own would have dual optical image stabilization(OIS).

Dual cameras are not customary to Apple device, found only on the iPhone 7 Plus and not on the iPhone 7. But the well-known analyst posits that Apple will re-engineer the 2017 flagship’s lenses to support optical image stabilization and auto focus as well.This he said will be to enhance the phone’s selling point because of the improvement it will bring to the photo quality and optical zoom range.

The iPhone 8 is rumored as having a version with 5.1- 5.2 inches OLED display in addition to the traditional 5.5-inch LCD display sporting one. Mr Kuo hinted that both versions will this time around feature dual cameras with dual IOS. However, there is also a 4.7-inch model which the analyst says will retain a single-lens camera but will also have optical image stabilization feature. The 6P and telephoto lens on all three new models are expected to be supplied by longstanding Apple supplier Largan Precision, according to the analyst.
