Amazon Prime Video Subscription is widely used across the US and the countries where it is available. The pricing and content are different in each country, but it seems now features will also differ if we conclude from the recent changes the company made to the Amazon Prime Video subscription in the US. Amazon introduced ads to the Prime Video subscriptions, and it seems the support for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos is also no longer available with the plan.

Amazon Prime Video Dolby Vision and Atmos Removal from Ad-Tier

A German tech firm, 4K Filme noticed the unavailability of the Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos features while streaming. The ad-tier users are limited to the HDR10+ and Dolby Digital 5.1 features. Later, Forbes and other publishers confined the absence of these features to the Amazon ad tier.

Surprisingly, Amazon did not add information about these features to the new ad-free tier. However, it seems the user has to pay an additional $2.99 per month to get an ad-free experience and support for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.

Amazon has not yet responded to the whole scenario and has failed to give any reasoning behind removing the features. Well, there could be a lot of things, at the backend, that led Amazon to take such a drastic step. However, a full explanation was expected, but the company simply confirmed to Forbes the removal of the features from the ad tier. In a response to Forbes, the company said, “Moving Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos to the ads-free tier is deliberate, and not the result of a technical issue.“

It seems, that Amazon deliberately removed the feature, rather than accidentally. Well, the actual reason remains under wraps.

The changes are part of the Amazon Prime Subscription Pack in the US, while other countries remain unaffected as of now.

As of today, subscribers can expect 3.5 minutes of ads per hour, with assurances that this won’t significantly affect the overall user experience.

Amazon will first introduced ads in the United States, then expect to extend to the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. The launch date for ads in other regions is currently uncertain. Ads will be visible in the free trial of Prime Video and the ad-supported Prime Video subscription. If you prefer an ad-free experience, you can do so by paying an extra $2.99 per month.

Amazon Prime Video displays ads that last between 15 seconds and 2 minutes. These ads can pop up at the start, middle, or end of movies and series. Amazon is testing a new subscription service called Prime Lite for users in India. The service is currently only available to select Prime members in the country as a Beta version, with an introductory price of Rs. 999 per year.

Prime Lite provides nearly identical benefits and services to Amazon Prime, with a few key differences. One significant difference is that the new Prime Lite membership does not include access to Amazon Prime Music. Furthermore, Prime Lite users are not eligible for no-cost EMI, free ebooks, or Prime Gaming.

In terms of delivery, Prime Lite offers Two-Day delivery on products, as opposed to Amazon Prime’s Same-Day or One-Day delivery. Prime Lite users can access unlimited content on Prime Video, but it will not be in HD format and will contain advertisements. The content can be streamed simultaneously on two devices, one of which must be a mobile phone.

It’s worth noting that Amazon raised the annual subscription price of Prime in India from Rs. 999 to Rs. 1,499 in December 2021. The new Prime Lite subscription offer is available at the previous price of Rs. 999 and is a more affordable option for users who do not require all of the benefits of Amazon Prime.

Amazon’s Prime Lite service is currently in beta testing and is only available to a limited number of users in India. The company has not stated when or if the service will be available to all users throughout the country.

According to a new report, the act of sharing passwords for Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video might soon be considered illegal in the UK. The news arrives from an update piracy guidelines that were shared by the British Intellectual Property Office. These stated that the “password sharing on streaming services,” which includes a number of the popular platforms like Disney+, can legally be considered as an act that breaks the copyright law.

TorrentFreak reached out to the UPO for more details regarding the legality of password sharing, and got the following response: “There are a range of provisions in criminal and civil law which may be applicable in the case of password sharing where the intent is to allow a user to access copyright protected works without payment. These provisions may include breach of contractual terms, fraud or secondary copyright infringement depending on the circumstances”

In simpler terms, if you share your password for the account on Netflix, Disney+, and even Amazon Prime Video, you can be legally prosecuted for fraud or for breaching the copyright’s law. Indian telcos request OTT services like Netflix, Prime Video, Hotstar, YouTube, and others to reduce the burden on their infrastructure networks. They are appealing this so that they can offer stable services to healthcare, banking, education, businesses, and others amid lockdown across India due to coronavirus outbreak.

The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) which comprises of the country’s telecom operators such as Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea has requested the popular video streaming services in the country to temporarily offer SD playback over HD and above quality for a certain period of time till the lockdown persists. The association has also asked them to avoid feeding high-bandwidth consuming advertisements and pop-ups to users.

Rajan Mathews, the director-general of the Association told Economic Times that they have appealed Department of Telecommunications (DoT) as well as Home Ministry to urge ‘video streaming service providers/broadcasters’ to manage their traffic distribution pattern in a way that they don’t stress the networks of telcos. By this, the network infrastructure can be used for other critical needs such as healthcare, online/digital education, digital banking transactions, and other important purposes.

Almost all the streaming services have already started taking steps to avoid using more bandwidth without compromising on the quality of the stream by using their proprietary software and algorithm. However, we are not sure whether or not they will limit playback to SD quality like the popular international services such as Netflix and Prime Video have done in other markets.
