Redmi‘s GM and Xiaomi Group VP Liu Weibing recently conducted a poll to know which most fans prefer between LCD and LED displays. The survey showed that most fans prefer LED display-toting smartphones as against an earlier preference for an LCD screen as of last year. However, there are apparently still fans who would love to have a flagship phone with an LCD screen.

Recently, a Weibo user had inquired (via) from Redmi’s product Wang Teng Thomas if Xiaomi is considering producing an LCD display-packing flagship phone powered by the Snapdragon 870 chipset. Of course, there were rumors recently that Xiaomi was going to launch three smartphones this year with Snapdragon 870 chip. But in response to the question, Wang Teng Thomas disclosed that the Chinese tech giant wasn’t planning to launch an LCD flagship this year. He even recommended the Redmi K30S Ultra to Mi fans who seek an LCD flagship phone. The K30S Ultra was released last year in China but is still on sale despite the arrival of the K40 Ultra.

The Xiaomi exec had earlier revealed that Xiaomi won’t be launching flagship models using LCD screens going forward. At present, OLED screens have become the standard configuration of flagship mobile phones. This trend has even shifted to the mid-range segments as more mid-range models are launched presently with OLED screens.

For instance, this year alone, Xiaomi has launched the Mi 11 flagship series with OLED screens and even the mid-range Mi 11 Lite equally utilizes an OLED panel. Further, the  Redmi K40 series, Redmi 10X series and a couple of other models also use OLED screens.

After Redmi split from its parent company Xiaomi to work independently, the brand has launched five smartphones — Redmi Note 7, Redmi Go, Redmi Note 7 Pro, Redmi 7, and Redmi Y3.

The company’s flagship smartphone powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC has been in the work, as the brand’s president has already confirmed. After several leaks and rumors, it seems that the phone is finally set to make its debut.

According to Weibo account of Tang Mu, General Manager of Xiaomi Smart Hardware Division, the company could launch the Redmi flagship smartphone powered by SD855 SoC at a launch event on 13th May in China.

Further, he notes that the company is also going to launch “one more thing” but what would that be is unknown at this time. Given that he handles smart devices division, it’s likely that the device could be an IoT-powered smart home device.

Yesterday, a protective cover of the Redmi K20 Pro smartphone leaked online, which allegedly is the upcoming Redmi flagship smartphone. It shows that the phone will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC and will have a 48 MP primary camera sensor on the back side.

The phone will come with a 6.3-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display and is likely to have an in-display fingerprint sensor like most other flagship smartphones. The device will be powered by a 4000 mAh battery with support for 27W fast charging. Previous reports have indicated that the phone will retain the 3.5mm headphone jack and a will have NFC support.

The company has also teased a smartphone powered by Snapdragon 730 chipset. This could be the device featuring a pop-up selfie camera as teased in a video shared by the company. There’s a possibility that the brand could launch this phone instead of its flagship smartphone.

The official name of the upcoming Snapdragon 855-powered Redmi phone is still unknown. It was initially referred to as the Redmi X but the company’s GM Liu Weibing disproved it. While we await the official name to be revealed, more details of the phone have surfaced.

Screenshots alleged to be from the device were shared on Twitter today by Sudhanshu Ambhore (@Sudhanshu1414) and they reveal some key details. One of the images reveals the phone’s codename as “Raphael“. This isn’t actually the first time we have heard that codename.

cepheus is the Xiaomi Mi 9, andromeda is the 5G Xiaomi Mi Mix 3, and raphael is another unknown Xiaomi Snapdragon 855 device.

Back in March, Mishaal Rahman of XDA-Developers tweeted the codenames of Xiaomi phones powered by the Snapdragon 855. Raphael is one of the devices he mentioned while the other two are the Mi 9 (Cepheus) and Mi MIX 3 5G (Andromeda).

Before we move on to other details of the screenshots, it is important to mention that Mishaal stated back then that Xiaomi was working on a Snapdragon 855 phone with a pop-up selfie camera codenamed “davinci”. He added that of all the Snapdragon 855 devices, only “davinci” is included in the hardware test for the pop-up selfie camera. But current developments point to “raphael” being the one with the pop-up selfie camera.

When I say "only for davinci's front camera" I mean that no other device is included in this hardware test (including no cepheus, andromeda, or raphael, the other 3 Snapdragon 855 Xiaomi devices.) This suggests the hardware is unique to davinci.

Back to the screenshot, we also see the phone has 256GB of storage which is double the amount of storage of any Redmi phone. There will surely be other variants too with this being the highest configuration. The phone is also shown to be running a beta version of MIUI 10.

The second screenshot reveals that the Redmi flagship has a GPU overclocking feature. Don’t get too excited as this might be a feature open to beta users and not accessible on the stable version. Nevertheless, it is a feature to be excited about.

The Redmi flagship is expected to launch this month and will be Xiaomi’s first phone with a pop-up camera. It will also have triple rear cameras and have an audio jack.

Update: Both “Raphael“ and “Davinci” are the two pop-up selfie camera phones powered by the Snapdragon 855 Xiaomi is developing. Both will also most likely be heading to India.

The Xiaomi’s sub-brand – Redmi is reportedly launching a flagship device with Snapdragon 855 soon. Lu Weibing, Xiaomi’s general manager is continuously teasing the new device via Weibo. After revealing new details like the pop-up camera in the new Redmi flagship, today he reveals some information about its availability.

While answering a question about the Redmi’s upcoming flagship device’s availability, Lu Weibing responds that the company is preparing enough stock of the device. As like of Redmi Note 7 Pro spot sale in China, we expect a similar activity for Redmi flagship device. It appears the Redmi preparations this time will fade away the availability issues.

The Redmi flagship device will come with Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset. It would be the world’s cheapest device powering the Snapdragon 855 chipset. It will compete against Xiaomi Mi 9, Lenovo Z6 Pro, Lenovo Z5 Pro GT 855, Samsung Galaxy S10 series, Sony Xperia 1 and other high-end devices.

The new mysterious phone will debut with NFC facilitating easy payments. A 3.5 mm audio jack and a triple camera module consisting of a 48-megapixel primary sensor + 8-megapixel + 13-megapixel camera sensors will be present on the device.

Unlike the Galaxy S10 series, there won’t be any punch hole camera, instead, it will come with a pop-up camera module housing a 32-megapixel sensor. There will be a full view display with improved screen-to-body ratio and slim bezels on the front side. The ‘worth waiting‘ device is expected to launch in May or June at an affordable price.

Moreover, a recent leak also pulled the wraps-off from a Snapdragon 730 powered Redmi smartphone. It is also in the pipeline and will feature a similar pop-up selfie camera, 3.5 mm audio jack, notch-less display and much more.

Redmi’s GM Lu Weibing recently hinted that the much-touted Redmi flagship would be released soon. Even though no date has been announced, the launch may likely be very soon. Now, Redmi’s GM has given us some details of the device and an idea of its pricing.

Lu Weibing tips the SD855-powered model to be the king of cost-efficient phones, meaning the price will be lower than all the Snapdragon 855 phones that have been released. He even promised that the price will be a shocker. Among the other features, the Redmi GM disclosed that the device whose name is still unknown will have stronger performance, longer battery life, better camera, and higher screen ratio.

The GM thinks it is a model worth waiting for and we may have to agree with that if, with such an array of features, the device ends up coming with a price tag that won’t put a hole in our pocket. Since the time Redmi General Manager Lu Weibing had confirmed in February that there will be an affordable Redmi flagship phone powered by Snapdragon 855 SoC, Redmi fans have been anticipating on its release date. A new Weibo post from Weibing suggests that the arrival of the Redmi flagship phone may not be very far away.

In the below shown screenshot, Weibing has claimed through Weibo that fans should not be believing and circulating rumors. The “not so fast, not so slow” translated text in his Weibo post is being related by the Chinese media to the release date of Redmi SD855 flagship phone. In other words, it is now being speculated that the launch date of the smartphone may not be far away.

When the Redmi executive says, “not so fast,” it could mean that the Redmi SD855 smartphone won’t be launching in April.  The “not so slow” text could mean that the release date of the Redmi flagship phone may not exceed June. Hence, there is a possibility that the smartphone may go official in May or June.

In China, June 18 is a very important mid-year online shopping festival. Probably, the company could be aiming the launch of Redmi 855 flagship phone around 618 festival to achieve higher sales.

Various smartphone manufacturers such as Samsung, LG, Google and so on are expected to announce their flagship phones from August through the end of the year. Hence, it appears that the mid-year could be the right time for the launch of Redmi flagship phone. Some reports have claimed that it may debut in China as Redmi Pro 2. Rumors have it that the same phone may debut outside of China as Poco F2.

Yesterday, an image showing Xiaomi co-founder and President Lin Bin along with a mysterious phone featuring a pop-up selfie camera and a 3.5mm audio jack was released by Xiaomi’s Product Director Wang Teng Thomas. It is speculated that it could be the highly anticipated Redmi 855 flagship smartphone. There are chances that it could be some other smartphone since Weibing had claimed the company’s flagship phone won’t be featuring a pop-up selfie snapper. Could it be arriving with a punch-hole display design as it was seen in a leaked video recently? Xiaomi today held its first independent launch event for the new Redmi brand and during the event, the company launched the Redmi Note 7 as its first product. Xiaomi also explained the need for the Redmi brand to be independent. Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun also officially announced that Lu Weibing, the former president of Gionee, who has recently joined Xiaomi Group, will serve as vice president of Xiaomi Group and general manager of the new Redmi brand. Later on, Lei Jun granted the media an interview where he disclosed that he had to persuade Lu Weibing for two years until the former Gionee chief had to turn off his own startup and joined Xiaomi.

Lei Jun also shared some details of the Redmi brand stating that the brand will continue to pursue the ultimate cost-effectiveness, focusing on the e-commerce market and attracting sales from the Internet. The Redmi brand has always been known for its affordability. That isn’t likely to change as Lei Jun reportedly hinted during the media chat the Redmi brand will manufacture its own flagship mobile phone which will cost just around 2500 yuan ($370). The Mi brand, on the other hand, will focus on high-end phones

This effectively confirms speculations that the unbundling of the company’s phone brand is similar to what Huawei and Honor did, as well as OPPO and Realme brands.
