OpenAI is exploring new ways to generate revenue and has not ruled out the possibility of introducing ads into ChatGPT. In an interview with The Verge, ChatGPT head Nick Turley said the company is open to the idea but emphasized the need to be “very thoughtful and tasteful” if it moves forward. He said ChatGPT may not be suitable for advertising because it must closely align with user goals, but other OpenAI products in the future could support different business models.

Turley said he remains confident in the subscription-based approach, which has driven rapid revenue growth. OpenAI expects to generate $12.7 billion in revenue this year, more than triple the $3.7 billion it made in 2024, according to Bloomberg. Despite this, the company still operates at a loss and does not expect to achieve positive cash flow before 2029.

ChatGPT recently surpassed 700 million total users, and as of April, the platform had 20 million paid subscribers. Turley said most users remain on the free tier, but added that this user base creates an opportunity to convert them to premium services.

OpenAI is also working on new monetization features, including product recommendations through ChatGPT. Turley said the company is testing a system called “Commerce in ChatGPT,” which could allow OpenAI to earn a cut from purchases. He said OpenAI does not plan to allow affiliate revenue to influence recommendations and wants the product selection process to remain independent.

Sam Altman, OpenAI CEO, has expressed concerns about mixing ads with AI. During a Harvard Business School event last year, he said the idea made him “a little uneasy” and should only be used as a last resort. However, in a podcast episode this June, Altman said he is “not entirely opposed” to ads if implemented responsibly.

Turley said OpenAI is also considering future product directions that go beyond the current chatbot format. He said ChatGPT could evolve into a more deeply integrated tool for productivity and business use, where different monetization strategies might apply.

In related news, an insider dismissed the August launch hype around DeepSeek-R2 as pressure grows on its AI goals, while Huawei’s new AI UCM tech is said to help China counter chip sanctions and improve performance.

A new health company called Thrive AI Health is aiming to revolutionize wellness through artificial intelligence. Co-founded by Arianna Huffington and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Thrive AI leverages AI to create a personalized “health coach” tailored to your specific needs. This coach analyzes various aspects of your life, including sleep, diet, fitness, stress, and social interactions, to offer data-driven recommendations.

The health data will be accessible through a smartphone app or a virtual assistant

Leading the company is DeCarlos Love, who previously spearheaded the fitness and health experience at Fitbit. Thrive AI plans to train its AI coach using a combination of scientific research, medical data, and collaborations with institutions like Stanford University School of Medicine. Their vision is to create a comprehensive health data platform accessible through a smartphone app or a virtual assistant integrated with Thrive’s existing products. This system will learn your behavior patterns and offer real-time health advice.

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, recently praised Apple’s new mixed-reality headset, the Vision Pro, on X (formerly Twitter). He ranked it as the second most impressive tech innovation after the iPhone. The Vision Pro, which costs $3,500, allows users to interact with digital content in their real surroundings using eye and finger movements.

OpenAI recently launched the ChatGPT app for Vision Pro

Altman believes the Vision Pro could be as impactful as the iPhone was, suggesting it represents a big step forward in how we use technology. He hinted that the most impressive tech to him might be artificial intelligence, especially with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which has changed what AI chatbots can do. Notably, OpenAI has already launched the ChatGPT app for Vision Pro, which is now available in its App Store.

Earlier this week, Elon Musk also commented on the Vision Pro, noting it’s not perfect but sees potential for improvement, similar to how the iPhone evolved after its initial release.

The Vision Pro’s ability to blend digital and physical realities hints at a future where technology more intimately integrates with daily human experience, similar to how the iPhone revolutionized mobile computing and connectivity.

Altman also joked about product names in the comment section, suggesting “ChatGPT” might not be as good a name as “Vision Pro,” showing he’s in tune with tech culture and feedback.

The Vision Pro has sold over 200,000 units since its release, demonstrating strong market interest and optimism in mixed-reality technologies. These devices are evolving to blur the lines between the digital and physical worlds, providing innovative ways to interact with and comprehend our surroundings. Altman’s endorsement of Vision Pro and his vision for AI‘s future reflect broader anticipation for upcoming technological advancements that will reshape our relationship with technology.

OpenAI, backed by tech giant Microsoft, has achieved a monumental revenue milestone, surpassing $2 billion in December 2023. The achievement, first reported by Reuters and later corroborated by The Financial Times, signifies a remarkable trajectory for the San Francisco-based company, driven by burgeoning interest from corporate clients in its generative AI tools.

The surge in revenue is attributed to OpenAI’s innovative products, particularly its ChatGPT offering, which has witnessed substantial adoption in various industries. The company’s annualized revenue soared to over $1.6 billion by December, a significant leap from $1.3 billion reported just two months earlier, as noted by The Information.

Market enthusiasm for OpenAI is evident, with investors valuing the startup at a staggering $80 billion. Riding on this momentum, CEO Sam Altman has been actively engaged in discussions with potential investors, including prominent figures like Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed al-Nahyan from the UAE, to secure funding for a transformative initiative.

Altman’s ambitious vision involves establishing a chip-making company, aiming to bolster global chip-building capacity and advance AI capabilities. Reports from Bloomberg indicate that Altman’s plan entails constructing modern manufacturing facilities, necessitating funding in the tens of billions of dollars and spanning several years for completion.

Key players in these funding talks include TSMC from Taiwan and Softbank, underscoring the global significance of OpenAI’s endeavors. Sheikh Tahnoon’s involvement, given his strategic role in managing significant investment funds in the UAE, further underscores the international interest in OpenAI’s initiatives.

While the specifics regarding the structure of the new chip-making venture remain undisclosed, sources suggest that OpenAI will serve as its initial client. This move aligns with previous reports hinting at OpenAI’s exploration of manufacturing its chipsets to address the increasing demand for AI chips, catalyzed by the widespread adoption of AI applications like ChatGPT.

The shortage of AI chips, exacerbated by increased demand, has prompted OpenAI to diversify its chip suppliers beyond Nvidia and explore collaboration opportunities with other manufacturers. The strategic move underscores OpenAI’s commitment to fostering innovation and meeting the evolving needs of its clientele.

OpenAI’s Bold Leap into Chip Manufacturing: Seeking Billions for Global AI Chip Fabs Network

This move is driven by Altman’s belief that the growing AI industry will soon face a shortage of necessary chips. Current production forecasts for AI-related semiconductors are not meeting the anticipated demand. Altman’s concern is that without sufficient chip supply, the widespread deployment of AI could be hindered.

OpenAI, known for developing ChatGPT, has seen its annual revenue reach $1.6 billion in 2023. The company is now looking to raise new funding at an estimated valuation of around $100 billion. Altman’s venture into chip manufacturing diverges from the strategy of other major players in the AI industry, like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft (OpenAI’s largest investor), who typically design their own chips and outsource the manufacturing.

The construction and maintenance of chip fabrication plants (fabs) are notably costly and resource-intensive. Setting up a single state-of-the-art fabrication plant can require tens of billions of dollars, and creating a network of such facilities would take years. Altman’s discussions with G42 alone have been about raising between $8 billion and $10 billion.

This venture is crucial for OpenAI’s future growth, as Altman has noted the company’s increasing need for chips. Major chip fabrication market leaders like Intel Corp., Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., and Samsung Electronics Co. are potential partners in this endeavor.

The plans for these fabs come after Altman’s brief departure and subsequent return as CEO of OpenAI. He has also approached Microsoft regarding this plan, with the software giant showing interest. However, the specifics of these partnerships and funding are still not fully determined, as the talks are ongoing.

Back in September last year, OpenAI also initiated a collaborative project with former Apple designer Jony Ive seeking up to $1 billion in Softbank funding for their AI Device Project, aiming to create an innovative consumer device focused on OpenAI technology. The project, still in its early stages, aimed to revolutionize computer interactions and potentially challenge smartphones’ dominance in the consumer electronics market.

In a surprising turn of events, OpenAI has announced the reinstatement of Sam Altman as CEO after a week-long internal crisis surrounding his abrupt termination. The initial decision had triggered concerns of a mass exodus from the company, with hundreds of staff members threatening to quit in solidarity.

The resolution involves the establishment of a new board chaired by former Salesforce executive Bret Taylor. Notable figures such as former US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo will join the board. Altman, co-founder and former CEO, expressed his anticipation for returning to OpenAI and highlighted the importance of building on the strong partnership with Microsoft, a key player in OpenAI’s investments.

The upheaval began when Altman was removed from the CEO position, prompting internal turmoil and investor pressure for stability. Microsoft, a significant investor, initially offered Altman a role to lead a new AI research team. However, Altman, with the support of Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, is set to return as OpenAI’s CEO under a new leadership structure.

Nadella welcomed the leadership changes, emphasizing their importance in achieving more stable, well-informed, and effective governance. Microsoft is considering changes in OpenAI’s governance structure, including potentially increasing the board’s size and raising the experience level required for members. This aligns with Microsoft’s goal of enhancing protections, given its substantial $13 billion investment in OpenAI.

Negotiations are ongoing between Altman, the OpenAI board, and interim CEO Emmett Shear regarding Altman’s possible reinstatement. Nadella has expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of notification from OpenAI’s board before Altman’s termination, underscoring the importance of communication and collaboration.

Regardless of Altman’s return, Nadella insists on significant governance changes at OpenAI. Microsoft is contemplating the possibility of placing one of its executives on OpenAI’s board but is cautious about potential challenges from US regulators.

As discussions unfold, Microsoft remains tight-lipped on the matter. The fate of Altman’s return and the current board will likely shape the future trajectory of OpenAI, a company renowned for its flagship product, ChatGPT. The advanced language model-based chatbot gained global popularity, reaching over 100 million monthly users within a year of its public release in November 2022.

Microsoft has recently made a significant move by hiring Sam Altman, the former CEO of OpenAI, and Greg Brockman, a co-founder of OpenAI, to lead a new advanced AI research team. The board cited issues with overseeing Altman and a lack of trust, leading to his and Brockman’s departure.

Altman’s Departure and New Beginning at Microsoft

Emmett Shear, co-founder of Twitch, was appointed as the interim CEO of OpenAI, succeeding Mira Murati, who had briefly held the position following Altman’s firing. The OpenAI board highlighted Shear’s unique skills and experience as pivotal for the company’s future. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella expressed excitement about Altman and Brockman joining Microsoft and emphasized the company’s commitment to providing them with the necessary resources.

Notably, Nadella took to social media to reiterate Microsoft’s dedication to its partnership with OpenAI, stating, “We remain committed to our partnership with OpenAI and have confidence in our product roadmap.” This statement reflects Microsoft’s strategic intent to maintain a strong collaboration with OpenAI while also enhancing its own AI research capabilities.

Altman’s departure from OpenAI was unexpected and caused a stir in the tech industry, revealing a divide in the AI community between rapid development and concerns about AI’s potential risks. Altman had been discussing a new AI start-up, and his firing led to some employees planning to leave OpenAI. Microsoft, a major investor in OpenAI, was taken aback by the sudden decision, learning about it shortly before it was publicly announced.

Microsoft’s new AI research team, led by Altman and Brockman, is part of the company’s ongoing investment in AI technology. Microsoft has also developed its own custom AI chip, the Azure Maia, to reduce reliance on Nvidia and power its Azure data centers.

Overall, Microsoft’s acquisition of Altman and Brockman positions the company favorably in the competitive AI research space, capitalizing on their expertise and following among AI professionals.

Open AI’s Sam Altman will collaborate with Jony Ive’s LoveFrom for the development of the first-ever OpenAI consumer device. The two companies have been reported to have held talks at Ive’s San Francisco studio. The goal is to create a new consumer product focused on OpenAI’s technology. The new device will deliver a more intuitive and natural user experience for AI engagements. The plan resonates with the Apple iPhone’s trajectory and its revolutionary impact on mobile internet for the mass market.

The AI Device Project is in the early stages of its design but various ideas are now under consideration. One of the important details is that ARM will have a significant contribution to the product. The chip designer is one of Softbank’s current investments. The collaborations will hopefully see the establishment of a company that pulls the resources of the three companies together. There are no formal agreements yet although talks are progressing smoothly.

The LoveFrom partnership with OpenAI marks a significant shift by Jony Ive who was part of the team that designed the first iPhone. The move marks a shift by the designer towards creating computer interactions that are less dependent on screens. The project may herald a new phase in consumer electronics. The rise of virtual reality products has not provided a dent yet in the widespread impact of smartphones. The new project however comes with innovation and a revolutionary bent. This potentially could evolve into a consumer device that can rival smartphones. The finer details of the OpenAI-LoveFrom-Softbank project will be known soon.

OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman, has confirmed that the company is not currently training a GPT-5 language model. Altman addressed this issue during a virtual event at MIT, where he emphasized that OpenAI is currently focused on upgrading and updating their existing GPT-4 model. He added that the company is working on addressing safety issues related to the model and that they had spent over six months training GPT-4 before its public release.

Credit: TheAIGRID

Altman also discussed some of the concerns raised in an open letter, allegedly signed by Elon Musk, calling for a pause in the development of large-scale language models. Altman noted that the letter lacked technical nuance and did not provide specific guidance on where the pause should occur. He emphasized the importance of increasing safety rigor as capabilities become more serious, and he stated that moving with caution is critical.

While OpenAI plans to continue being transparent, the company has not released any information on GPT-4’s training data or its architecture, construction, or other inner workings. This decision was based on concerns related to the competitive landscape and safety implications of large-scale language models like GPT-4.

Overall, Altman’s comments suggest that OpenAI is taking a measured approach to the development of language models and is focused on addressing safety concerns as it moves forward. While there is no GPT-5 in training, the company is committed to upgrading and updating its existing models to improve their performance and safety.

The ban on ChatGPT in Italy has raised concerns over data privacy and the regulation of AI technology. ChatGPT, an AI-powered chatbot developed by OpenAI, has become increasingly popular worldwide since its launch in November 2022. The chatbot’s impressive abilities have been utilized by users for various purposes, including writing essays, generating ideas for video content, and composing poetry. However, the ban in Italy marks the first time that a country has taken action against the use of an AI chatbot.

The Italian government’s data protection authority has accused OpenAI of unlawfully collecting personal data from users and failing to have adequate age-verification measures in place to prevent minors from being exposed to illicit material. The ban comes after a data breach was reported on March 20, which OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged. The ban has prompted OpenAI to provide additional information and possible remedies before the Italian government makes a final decision on the future of ChatGPT in the country.

We of course defer to the Italian government and have ceased offering ChatGPT in Italy (though we think we are following all privacy laws).

Italy is one of my favorite countries and I look forward to visiting again soon!
— Sam Altman (@sama) March 31, 2023

The ban in Italy has caused concern among ChatGPT users and the wider tech community. As AI technology continues to advance and become more integrated into our daily lives, it is likely that more countries will implement stricter regulations to ensure the protection of user data and privacy. OpenAI’s response to the ban highlights the need for AI regulation, which has been a topic of discussion among tech experts for some time.

In a recent interview with podcast host Lex Friedman, Sam Altman talked about the possibility of AI replacing some human jobs, including customer service. He acknowledged that he was worried about how quickly this change would come, but also stated that human creativity is limitless and we find new jobs to do eventually.

The ban on ChatGPT in Italy serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting user data and privacy in the age of AI. As AI technology continues to evolve, it is essential that governments and tech companies work together to develop ethical and responsible practices that ensure the safe and secure use of AI technology.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently expressed his concerns over the potential impact of the company’s latest AI creation, ChatGPT. In an interview with ABC News, Altman admitted that he is “a little bit scared” of the chatbot’s ability to eliminate human jobs. He also expressed concerns about the possibility of ChatGPT being used for malicious purposes, such as large-scale disinformation or offensive cyberattacks.

(Photo by Steve Jennings/Getty Images for TechCrunch)

Altman acknowledged that while ChatGPT is currently very much in human control, there is a risk that other individuals or organizations may not put the same safety limits in place. He suggested that society has a limited amount of time to figure out how to regulate and handle the potential impact of AI technology like ChatGPT.

OpenAI recently launched the ChatGPT-4 version of the bot, which the company claims is “more creative and collaborative” than previous versions. The company has also rolled out a ChatGPT Plus subscription for users, offering early access to new features, including GPT-4.

However, Altman acknowledged that the development of advanced AI like ChatGPT could potentially lead to job displacement for humans. He expressed confidence in humanity’s ability to adapt to major technological shifts but also cautioned that rapid technological changes could present significant challenges.

Overall, Altman’s comments highlight the complex and often unpredictable nature of AI technology and its potential impact on society. While AI has the potential to revolutionize many industries and improve our lives in numerous ways, it also poses significant challenges and risks that need to be addressed. As AI continues to evolve and become more advanced, it will be crucial for society to carefully consider and manage its impact.
