New Apple iPhones may offer longer battery life thanks to improved Samsung OLED displays

Sean — Wed, 15 Nov 2023 10:58:29 +0000

The future generation of Apple iPhones may soon offer improved battery life. Samsung Display is apparently planning on using new materials on its OLED panels, which should make the screens more energy efficient. So here are all the details.

Apple iPhones may last for longer soon

According to a new report from The Elec, Samsung Display plans to include blue phosphorescent material in its OLED displays. This new material will basically reduce the power consumption of the panels, so next generation iPhones could have a longer battery life. Unfortunately, this new screen might not be featured on devices until 2026. In other words, the new display technology shouldn’t be featured till the iPhone 18 lineup.

For those unaware, The red and green phosphorescent materials in OLED panels have a 100 percent internal luminous efficiency. However, blue has fluorescent materials that have an efficiency of just 25 percent. So switching it with phosphorescent material could help lower the power usage of the new OLED screens. Samsung is currently at work in creating this blue phosphorescent material.

Notably, the new materials under development by Samsung has a lifespan of around 55 percent of the lifespan of the blue fluorescent material that was employed on the M11 OLED material. This is the same screen featured on the iPhone 13 series. This means that the technology is still not ready, with UBI analyst Yoon noting that development “does not seem to be going smoothly”. Keep in mind that this is still just an unconfirmed report, so take this news with a pinch of salt.

Apple Will Use Samsung OLED For 7 Out Of Every 10 iPhones It Sells

Oğuz Çakır — Thu, 24 Nov 2022 12:47:43 +0000

Samsung is one of the largest technology companies in the world. Even though most of us know Samsung with smartphones, the company actually consists of many different departments. One of these departments is Samsung Display, which is responsible for developing and producing panel technologies. The South Korean technology giant produces displays under this brand both for itself and for many of its competitors, including Apple. It seems that the company is so successful in its business that it produced the screens of 7 out of every 10 iPhones sold.

Samsung is dominating the Apple iPhone 14 OLED supply this year

Apple works with several suppliers for the OLED screens it uses in iPhones. The most important of these are BOE, LG Display, and Samsung Display. According to recent reports, Samsung is dominating the Apple iPhone 14 OLED supply this year. Apple is expected to use more than 120 million OLED panels for the iPhone 14. Almost 70% of these panels will be produced by its biggest competitor.

The company is expecting to ship mid-80 million units out of that total of 120 million. Its closest competitor is LG Display is expected to ship mid-20 million units while BOE is to ship up to 6 million units. Samsung Display supplies OLED panels for all four models; LG Display supplies LTPS for the regular 6.1-inch model and LTPO for the 6.7-inch Pro Max model. BOE only supplies LTPS for the 6.1-inch regular iPhone.

OLED displays are among the most expensive parts used in iPhones. Considering all this, it is concluded that Apple makes money for Samsung from every iPhone it sells. However, this does not change the fact that the US company has outstripped all its competitors in the premium smartphone market.

Samsung teases rollable, foldable, & slideable OLED displays for phones, tablets, & even laptops

Zohaib Ahmed — Wed, 24 Nov 2021 12:36:58 +0000

Samsung has been hinting at a future full of rollable, foldable, and slideable OLED displays as part of its ‘OLED Era’ for quite a while. But a new site for Samsung Display now indicates that the company has gotten more overt than ever with its teasers.

The micro-site has seemingly been set up with the sole purpose of showcasing the company’s bleeding-edge display tech. Within it, the ‘Flex OLED’ page suggests that Samsung may soon be diverging into a greater variety of displays, offering a number of aspect ratios and folding in a variety of different ways. The company’s current portfolio only includes its Galaxy Z Fold and Flip devices but it might soon be expanded.

Samsung’s Ultra Thin Glass tech has been highlighted with improved durability, withstanding 100 folds a day or over five years of constant use. UTG has even been claimed to match the hardness of real glass, although that remains to be seen.

Ultra Thin Glass

The Korean company has even achieved a remarkably tiny bending radius of just 1.4mm, which should provide a tinier crease and result in slimmer devices.

But perhaps the most intriguing bits are the posters that seem to show laptops+tablets with foldable displays and TVs with rollable displays that roll just like paper. Of course, these are obviously still under their early stages, but a future where tech like this is mainstream is now closer than ever.

The site also offers a glimpse at Flex Bar – a display type not unlike the one found on the Z Flip3, as well as Flex Square (a Z Fold-style panel). Flex Note has been showcased as well – a new trademark that might be Samsung’s new way of describing tech found on devices like the ThinkPad X1 Fold.

All in all, Samsung’s vision is a huge step in the right direction. Many had already begun to deem phones as having reached an evolutionary peak, but it’s quite clear now that there’s plenty more to come.

Samsung Display OLED shipments falls by 9% due to low Apple iPhone 12 mini sales

Sean — Mon, 22 Mar 2021 09:39:27 +0000

Samsung Display‘s shipment of OLED (organic light emitting diode) panels has fallen by 9 percent in January 2021, over the previous month, reaching 45 million units in sales as per a new report.

The primary reason for the decline in sales is apparently due to the lackluster sales of the iPhone 12 mini from Apple, as per TheElec report. Last year, the Cupertino based giant launched four models in its iPhone 12 series. While the lineup overall saw great success across the globe with higher than expected sales thanks to its 5G support, the lowest end entry model saw lackluster demand. The sales of the 5.4 inch iPhone 12 mini was lower than what the company had anticipated.

Notably, the South Korean display maker is the sole supplier for the OLEDs on the Mini variant of the iPhone 12. The first quarter of a year is usually known to be an off season for smartphone sales, although, Samsung Display’s OLED display supply to Chinese companies remained strong in the same month. These ‘rigid’ OLED panels use glass substrates and are relatively cheaper than flexible OLED panels that use plastic (polyimide), which are found in flagship handsets like the iPhone and Galaxy S21 lineup.

The global shipments of OLED panels reached 53 million units, marking a decline of 9 percent. Out of this figure, Samsung Display accounted for 45 million units or about 85 percent of the total. On the other hand, LG Display shipped 6 million units in January 2021. In terms of rankings, Samsung Display arrived first, followed by BOE and Tianma as second and third respectively.

Samsung Display to setup new production line for notebook OLED panels

Sean — Mon, 01 Feb 2021 12:00:43 +0000

Samsung Display is planning on setting up a new production line. This new factory line will be responsible for the production of notebook or notebook OLED display panels, which will be at its A4 factory in Asan, South Korean

According to TheElec report, the South Korean tech giant will be opening a new production line, which will have a capacity of 30,000 substrates per month. These will be responsible for the production of mid sized OLED display panels that are in the 18 to 20 inch ranges that are targeting the laptop market. At the moment, the plan has been internally dubbed as the N Project. The N stands for notebooks, while it was previously called the notebook liquid crystal display (LCD) lines N Project as well.

The company will begin placing orders in the summer of this year for the equipment that will be required at the new production line. These will then be placed in the new line within the year or early 2022. Since Samsung Display is already producing notebook OLED panels, it shouldn’t take the firm too long to ramp up production after the new line is set up and the equipment is installed.

The move also marks the company’s growth towards IT products to meet the growing demand, especially for laptops, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, which has raised the PC market overall over remote working and online education. Just last month, the company even announced that it planned to launch over ten new kinds of notebook OLED panels within this year as it expects sales to grow by five folds in 2020.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra to feature a low powered OLED display

Sean — Tue, 26 Jan 2021 10:25:33 +0000

Earlier this week, Samsung Electronics announced a new low powered OLED display for smartphones. This new display will make its first appearance in the Galaxy S21 Ultra, with the company claiming lowered power consumption of about 16 percent.

According to a CNET report, that the new display technology achieves a lower power draw by speeding up electron flows in the screen’s organic layer. For those unaware, the display is one of the major power drawing components of a smartphone. Jeeho Baek, head of the Mobile Display Sales, Marketing & Product Planning Office of Samsung Display stated that The constant progression of display technologies has increased demand for lower power consumption to enable features such as larger screens, faster display driving, and greater resolution.”

To put things simply, pixels in OLED panels are made out of organic materials that glow when a current is passed through them. So, the acceleration of the flow of electrons through the display’s layers would increase the brightness of the light produced whilst consuming less power, which raises battery life, as per official Samsung notes.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G was unveiled along with the South Korean tech giant’s Galaxy S21 and S21 Plus earlier this month, and are positioned as the company’s latest premium grade flagship handsets. These devices sport top notch specs and supports the newer and faster bandwidth, 5G, as well. At the moment, the pre orders for these smartphone series is open right now, with the official launch to begin on 29th January 2021.

Samsung Display to unveil up to 10 OLED displays for Laptops at CES 2021

Balaji S — Tue, 05 Jan 2021 15:50:51 +0000

CES 2021 will be a virtual event due to the on-going pandemic situation. The event, which will last from Jan. 11-14, 2021, is going to witness a host of new technologies. Among them, looks like the OLED tech will gather a lot of attention. A new teaser of Samsung Display Promises OLED display with “Super Image Quality”, “Cinematic Colors” for Laptops. And it is said to unveil up to 10 displays for the same.

Samsung Display, via YouTube, shared the features of the upcoming OLED displays. First, the video begins with the above-mentioned slogans of display qualities. Samsung then shows how the OLED will have Ultrapure RGB Colors compared to conventional OLED displays.

In fact, it indirectly hints that Samsung Display‘s OLED for laptops will have improved Sun Light legibility, HDR. Precisely, it says that a combination of Brightness x Chroma which is probably an algorithm will enhance the quality. Further, the OLED displays will also cover 120% of the DCI-P3 color gamut.

That’s a whopping 46% bump up from the conventional display’s gamut as per the company. As if this wasn’t enough, Samsung says the displays will have deeper blacks even when tested at 0.0005nit, contrast ratio>1,000,000:1, 85% of the true-HDR coverage, and more.

Nevertheless, we can’t wait to see the working prototype versions at CES 2021 and are sure that Samsung Display is going to pioneer the notebook category like it has been doing it for Smartphones and TV panels.

While the YouTube video doesn’t say anything about the CES announcement, a report by computerbase.de says that Samsung will unveil up to 10 OLED displays for Laptops at the event. The sizes will vary from 13.3 to 16-inches and arrive in commercial products later in 2021.

Also, Samsung Display will reportedly share it with other brands breaking the stereotype of keeping it exclusive to itself. What is even surprising is that the company will likely unveil a 15.6-inch 1920×1080 pixels OLED display that will appear in products as early as February 2021. If the report is true, we might see FHD OLED laptops from Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo soon.

Xiaomi is working on a transparent TV with a 27 inch Samsung OLED panel

Sean — Tue, 08 Sep 2020 09:09:37 +0000

Xiaomi has recently been launching its own iteration of monitors across different segments and is showing an increasing interest in the display market as well. Now, a new report suggests that the company is working on a new transparent TV, which features a 27 inch Samsung OLED panel.

According to a MyDrivers report, the Chinese tech giant is planning on launching this transparent TV by 2021. This new monitor will be positioned as the company’s ultra high end flagship TV. For those unaware, transparent TVs forego traditional backplane, and bring circuits and micro devices into a subversive transparent form through precise layout design. Furthermore, the panel used will be a 27 inch OLED display from Samsung.

The report has also stated that Xiaomi has already started setting up the supply chain for the product with negotiations regarding operations and shipping commitments being made as well. Although considering the high cost of Samsung OLED panels and the inherited cost of transparent displays, we can expect the upcoming TV to be priced quite high. Unfortunately, finer details regarding this TV are currently unknown, so stay tuned for more updates which should arrive in the near future.

Future Apple iPhones Could Use OLED Panels From Chinese Suppliers

Jed John Ikoba — Mon, 26 Dec 2016 05:11:32 +0000

There is a steady interest in the use of OLED panels for smartphones of late and Apple has been one of those touted as planning a shift to OLED on one of its next generation iPhone models. In the past, Apple iPhones have traditionally launched sporting LCD panels, but in keeping up with the trend and perhaps because of the superior display quality OLED panels offer, the company is said to be tinkering with the idea of using it on one of its up coming iPhone 8 models and in future iPhones.

Rumor has it that the OLEDs that would be used by the iPhone 8 would likely be supplied by Samsung who seems to have perfected the technology. However, Samsung’s production capacity cannot meet its own demand for OLEDs for its smartphones and those of external manufacturers. Thus, a number of phone manufacturers do not have access to OLED screens. According to a report by IHS Markit, because Samsung cannot guarantee the supply of OLED panels, Chinese phone brands have already begun testing the local manufacturers of OLED screens.

The report reveals that presently the demand for OLEDs is from two of the biggest brands in OPPO and Vivo – two BBK subsidiaries. It went further to state that in 2017, other big brands like Meizu, Gionee, Lenovo, Huawei, Xiaomi will join the transition to OLED panels such that there’s projected to be a huge market demand that a reliance on only Samsung could lead to disappointment. IHS data put the rate of utilizaation of OLED screens in the domestic Chinese market at 13.6%, up from 8% in 2015.

IHS Markit report also noted that if the domestic manufacturers in China could seize this huge demand/supply gap to improve on their production capacity, they will likely enter Apple’s supply chain. In clear terms, future Apple iPhones OLED supplies could be from local Chinese manufacturers. That is if and only when they upgrade their own technology to meet the standard of Samsung’s OLED. Already, results have not been disappointing, as Xiaomi Redmi Pro was revealed to have used OLED panels sourced from local suppliers and the display was superb.
