Hong Kong based Sandbox VR has collaborated with numerous entertainment and media companies to create realistic and fully immersive experiences for users. Their Star Trek-themed game, developed in collaboration with CBS, was a hit among sci-fi fans. The company’s newest collaboration with Netflix is based on the dystopian thriller Squid Game, which has gained worldwide attention for its intense gameplay and gripping storyline.

According to CEO and founder Steve Zhao, the company’s content team in Hong Kong has been working on the Squid Game experience for the past five months, and it will be launched later this year at Sandbox VR’s arcades across the globe. Sandbox VR’s expansion plans have been supported by investors such as Adreessen Horowitz, Gobi Partners, and Alibaba Group Holding. The company has 34 locations worldwide and is building 12 new ones.

Despite the setbacks of the pandemic, the company has rebounded and is now focused on increasing its global footprint to 40 locations by the end of 2022. Zhao confirms that the company is already profitable and has no plans to raise new funds at this time. Sandbox VR’s journey has not been without challenges, and the pandemic dealt a severe blow to the company’s business, leading to its US operations filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2020.

However, the company has recovered and is now expanding its headcount, with 50 people working on research and development across product, technology, and content. Though the company’s growth in mainland China has been slow, it is making steady progress, and Zhao expects the location in Shanghai to return to normal operations this year. The company’s focus, for now, remains on the US market, where its collaborations with leading entertainment companies have proven to be a winning strategy.

As the virtual reality market is expected to grow significantly in the coming years, Sandbox VR is well-positioned to take advantage of this trend. With its unique approach to location-based VR and collaborations with entertainment giants like CBS and Netflix, the company hopes to continue its growth trajectory and offer guests a fully immersive experience that meets their fantasies. Netflix may launch a video game based on its popular Squid Game

Earlier this year, Netflix had officially revealed its plan on entering the gaming market, with titles based on its popular series being launched. Now, it seems that another beloved series, Squid Game, could be entering its gaming roster.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the online video streaming platform’s VP for the Asia Pacific content, Minyoung Kim, talked about the possibility of turning the explosively successful series into a video game. As of right now, the second season for the South Korean series is currently in talks to start as well. The senior official of Netflix has confirmed that the company is “looking into” the possibility.

The news of the series being turned into a video game arrives as the show saw massive success across the globe. Minyoung Kim even added that she has been receiving requests to bring the series into a video game format. She added that “We’ve been getting an overwhelming but happy volume of requests from the organization — from the consumer product department, from the gaming group, from our other international teams.”

Notably, the executive also confirmed that the team is looking into creating a roadmap for its future ventures as well, stating that “My team’s role is to really look at all of those opportunities together, to create that roadmap for the Squid Game IP.” Additionally, Minyoung Kim believed in aiming towards increasing the viewers’ affinity towards their content by adding, ”We are looking at multiple different areas — from games, consumer product, and others — to really figure out what we can bring to our audiences to increase their affinity toward our content and give them more joy while staying true to the world that our creator has built.”

South Korean internet service provider sues Netflix over ‘Squid Game’

SK Broadband, a South Korea based internet service provider, is suing Netflix over its popular series “Squid Game.” The reason behind the lawsuit was the alleged surge in network traffic that it had faced due to the recently released show.

The South Korean internet service provider is demanding Netflix to pay for the associated maintenance costs due to the spike it faced in networking traffic. For those unaware, Squid Game is a new Netflix series is based on the dystopian thriller type genre. Notably, the Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said is on pace to become the online movie streaming platform’s “biggest show ever.”

A Netflix spokesperson stated in an email to CNBC that “We will review the claim that SK Broadband has filed against us. In the meantime, we continue to seek open dialogue and explore ways of working with SK Broadband in order to ensure a seamless streaming experience for our shared customers.” Interestingly, this statement arrives after a South Korean court stated that Netflix should “reasonably” pay an amount to SK Broadband for network usage.

Furthermore, lawmakers in the region has also been calling out content providing platforms like Netflix that do not pay network usage fees. Although, Netflix revealed earlier this week that it helped create 16,000 jobs in South Korea. Unfortunately, SK Broadband did not respond to CNBC’s request to comment on the matter.
