Qualcomm, a leading semiconductor and telecommunications equipment company, has recently announced the launch of two modem chips, namely 212S and 9205S. These chips are launched so as to cater to the growing demands of the enterprise Internet of Things (IoT) sector as well as the satellite industry, which is expected to boom over the next decade. Offering hybrid connectivity and boasting ultra-low power consumption, the chips aren’t your regular Qualcomm chips. They comply with the 3GPP Release 17 standard, making them ideal for ground synchronous orbit (GEO/GSO) satellite communication. Additionally, they also support global positioning capabilities (GPS).

The 212S is perfect for long-distance fixed-location applications

The 9205S chip, which has already hit the market, is advertised to provide seamless connectivity between IoT devices and both cellular and satellite networks. This integration enables precise positioning data through the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). As a result, the chip will find applications in various industries, such as tracking shipping containers, monitoring agricultural equipment and livestock, and managing global fleets and freight in supply chain operations.

On the other hand, the 212S chip, set to be released later this year, is fabricated for long-distance, fixed-location applications. As per Qualcomm, the chip excels at optimizing battery to extend device lifespan and performs tasks such as collecting telemetry data from water and fuel tanks, meters, and other infrastructure equipment. Moreover, it is well-suited for public grid monitoring, early fire detection reporting etc.

Both chips leverage the Qualcomm Aware platform, which offers real-time asset tracking and device management services in remote areas. In collaboration with NTN service provider Skylo, the Qualcomm Aware platform promises optimized integration for these chips, enhancing their functionality and performance.

In a remarkable technological feat, AST SpaceMobile, the pioneer in space-based cellular broadband networks, has accomplished repeated successful download speeds surpassing 10 Mbps during the testing phase of BlueWalker 3. This groundbreaking milestone marks the first-ever instance of space-based cellular 4G communications using smartphones.

Space-Based communication will help provide connectivity to dead network zones over the globe

The tests, conducted by engineers in Hawaii during June, utilized off-the-shelf smartphones and leveraged AT&T spectrum and Nokia RAN technology. Initial speeds reached an impressive 10.3 Mbps, while subsequent voice call testing with AT&T employees showcased the versatility of the system. As newer iterations of BlueWalker 3 continue to be created, the next major milestone will be 5G cellular broadband. It won’t take too long, that’s for sure.

Abel Avellan, Chairman and CEO of AST SpaceMobile, emphasized the transformative potential of this achievement, stating, “AST SpaceMobile’s space-based cellular capabilities are designed to be a critical extension for cellular communications. This groundbreaking moment in telecommunications history brings us closer to our goal of providing broadband services to regions lacking reliable or non-existent cellular coverage.”

The successful achievement of double-digit download speeds during satellite-to-smartphone testing represents a significant step towards universal connectivity. Chris Sambar, Head of AT&T Network, also expressed the importance of this milestone in ensuring uninterrupted connectivity for people across the United States, irrespective of their location.

The impact of this development is not limited to the United States. Alberto Ripepi, Chief Network Officer at Vodafone, explained how achieving such mobile speeds through satellite communication directly to standard 4G smartphones brings people closer together by making networks more accessible. Vodafone, Vodacom, and AST SpaceMobile are committed to bringing this capability to hard-to-reach areas in Africa and Europe.

Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia, stressed the importance of delivery of real mobile broadband connectivity directly to smartphones. This should be treated as a critical achievement that will foster global connectivity in the long run. AST SpaceMobile’s technology also aims to expand coverage for wireless companies, bridging gaps and dead zones in their networks. This breakthrough has the potential to extend cellular broadband services to millions worldwide, currently lacking reliable cellular connectivity. The number is bigger than you might think.

With agreements with over 35 mobile network operators worldwide, AST SpaceMobile’s impact will become clearer over the long run. Major players in the telecommunications game, such as Vodafone Group, AT&T, and Bell Canada have previously expressed support in favor of AST SpaceMobile’s technology. As the company prepares its technology for commercialization, the successful deployment of BlueWalker 3, combined with the largest-ever commercial communications array in low-Earth orbit, will set the stage for the birth of a truly global cellular broadband network. With the advancements in telecommunications rapidly advancing, it won’t be surprising if the near future normalizes global satellite-based communications on mobile devices.

AST SpaceMobile’s mission is to eliminate connectivity gaps faced by the five billion mobile subscribers worldwide and bring broadband services to the millions who remain unconnected. With their groundbreaking achievements and partnerships, it seems like they are one step closer to fulfilling their vision.

Now, the known telecom based company has helped make the first phone call from space on a Samsung Galaxy S22 model. This milestone was achieved by AST SpaceMobile, which is a firm that is working on building the first ever space based cellular broadband network and managed to make the first two way voice call directly to a regular smartphone using its proprietary satellite technology.

But this wasn’t reached alone, since the company made this space call over the AT&T spectrum using an unmodified Samsung Galaxy S22. Going into the details, AST SpaceMobile utilized its own technology and the BlueWalker 3 satellite to complete establish a direct voice connection from space to a device connected to the traditional cellular network. The company’s engineers managed to make this unique voice call from Midland, Texas area to Rakuten in Japan thanks to AT&T spectrum.

Chris Sambar, Head of AT&T Network stated that “AT&T’s heritage began with the birth of the telephone 147 years ago and has continued with many other firsts including: trans continental call, overseas call, call from the moon, and partnering to deliver the only network built with and for America’s first responders. We connect people to greater possibility, and this important milestone with AST SpaceMobile is a big step and we can’t wait to see what’s next in our space based journey.”

At MWC Barcelona 2023 today, Google Cloud has announced a new product that aims to help communications service providers (CSPs) automate and optimize their network operations. The product, called Telecom Network Automation, is a cloud-based solution that leverages Google’s expertise in Kubernetes, artificial intelligence (AI) and open source software.

Source: Google Cloud

Telecom Network Automation is based on Nephio, an open source project that Google created and led on under the Linux Foundation. Nephio enables CSPs to use common automation templates to manage their network infrastructure and functions across multiple clouds and vendors. Nephio also uses AI-powered control loops to monitor and adjust network performance based on user-defined intents.

According to Google Cloud, Telecom Network Automation can help CSPs reduce operational costs, improve service quality and accelerate time-to-market for new services. The product can also support various use cases such as 5G radio access networks (RAN), edge computing, network slicing and private networks.

One of the early adopters of Telecom Network Automation is Bell Canada, which has used it to automate its implementation of Google Distributed Cloud Edge, a platform that delivers cloud services at the edge of the network. Bell Canada said that Telecom Network Automation has helped it simplify its network management and enhance its customer experience.

Google Cloud said that Telecom Network Automation is part of its cloud-native network modernization offering for CSPs, which also includes Anthos for Telecom, a platform that enables CSPs to run applications anywhere using containers and microservices. Google Cloud added that it is committed to collaborating with the telecom industry and supporting open standards and interoperability.

And the main reason for the lack of cellular signals in places like the forest and the ocean is because telecommunications providers don’t have cell towers built in the area to provide you cell service to access the Internet or to make calls.

However, in 2022, technology has matured far enough that humans have finally found a solution to tackle the problem of providing cell service even in remote places that were previously unreachable by traditional cell signals.

The news arrives from sources close to the matter (Via ITHome). Apparently, the Chinese tech giant shipped telecommunications equipment to Russia’s VimpelCom (AKA VEON). The sources said that the deliveries were made under a previously signed contract, although, a new contract has yet to be approved. A couple of days ago, VimpelCom received a large batch of telecom equipment made by Huawei.

These are apparently worth around 15 million US Dollars, as per people close to the terms of the contract. As per the two sources, the supply contract was lengthy and was initially signed back on February 24. However, sanctions that were imposed caused issues in deliveries. As of right now, various governments across the globe has been against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine. The US has banned exports of high tech products in the region, especially technology related to defense, aerospace, and shipbuilding.

Furthermore, these also included the supply of semiconductors, computers, telecommunications, and information security equipment as well. Back in February 2022, the US Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security had also issued a clarification that the export or transfer of goods to maintain civilian telecommunications infrastructure will be excluded from this rule.

US Telecom group AT&T had also announced last month that its US consumer and business customers will be eligible for unlimited long distance calls to Ukraine till the 7th of March 2022. On the other hand, Verizon announced that it will be waiving roaming charges for calls from residential landline and consumer or business wireless phones to and from Ukraine till March 10. It is even removing costs for voice and text based roaming charges for customers in the country. Overall, the telecom operators that are providing these temporary offers are from both sides of the Atlantic and seek to help people in Ukraine amid the Russian invasion.

According to a MoneyControl report, the satellite company is looking to hold virtual conversations with Members of Parliament, ministers and other top government officials about how broadband connectivity can change lives in rural areas. Furthermore, SpaceX’s satellite broadband unit also seeks to bring its own services in India from December 2022, with around 200,000 active terminals subject to permission from the local government.

Starlink Country Director for India Sanjay Bhargava stated that “In October I am also keen to have 30-minute virtual conversations with MPs, ministers, secretaries to GOI (government of India), or principal secretaries to states to see if they think 100 per cent broadband would help improve lives. We will probably focus on ten rural Lok Sabha constituencies for 80 per cent of the Starlink terminals shipped to India.” Previously, Bhargava has also said that the pre order from India has crossed 5,000 and the company was keen to work in rural areas for providing broadband services.

Starlink’s arrival in India would have it compete with local telecom operators like Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea in broadband. Bhargava added that “”Most of this will be provided by terrestrial broadband, but the hard-to-serve areas will be handled by Satcom providers like Starlink. We look forward to the day a rural constituency in India can declare itself to be 100 percent broadband.”

According to an SCMP report, Democratic representatives Ted Lieu of California and Brad Schneider of Illinois have now joined 30 other cosponsors of the Transatlantic Telecommunications Security Act earlier this week. This would allow the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) to identify projects from central and eastern Europe (including regions like Austria and Greece to Ukraine and Moldova) and to offer support to their respective agencies.

The bill states that “the United States has national security and economic interests in assisting central and eastern European countries to improve the security of their telecommunications networks by reducing dependence on covered telecommunications equipment or services that are often offered with predatory economic inducements, and replacing them with secure telecommunications equipment or services.” For those unaware, Chinese telecom giants Huawei and ZTE have been facing increasing friction in the west. Furthermore, the US has been pressurizing its allies to avoid low cost gear from the two firms.

Now, the latest move seeks to warn the central and eastern Europe against China’s attempt “to undermine” their sovereignty. The two senators added that “The US has pushed countries to ban Huawei infrastructure, but … has not offered support to countries who cannot afford other infrastructure. The [Transatlantic Telecommunication Security Act] would provide financing to European allies who are most vulnerable to low-cost options like Huawei, and it would expand the number of countries that DFC can invest in, helping them modernize digital infrastructure.”

According to a Reuters report, the US FCC will be opening a 1.9 billion US Dollars program that will reimburse US telecom carriers, specifically rural ones, in order to aid in the removal/replacement of networking gear from the Chinese tech giant. For those unaware, Huawei was labeled as a national security threat by the US Commerce Department, who also added the brand into its trade blacklist as well. Now, the government seeks to further remove its presence from its network entirely.

While it Huawei and ZTE were designated as national security threats to communications, an order of “rip and replace” isn’t so simple. This holds especially true for rural carriers that would potentially face high costs and difficulty finding works that can remove and replace the equipment made by the Chinese firms. Furthermore, the initial eligibility criteria were for companies that had fewer than 2 million or lesser customers, but that has since been raised to 10 million or lower customers.

Back in September 2020, the FCC had estimated that the cost of total removal and replacement would be around 1.837 billion US Dollars. And now, it seems that the US is accelerating its plans to ban approvals for equipment in the nation’s telecom networks that were made by entities designated as a national security threat.

Market research firm Dell’Oro Group recently published a report about global telecom infrastructure market for the fourth quarter of 2020. While Huawei led the market, the overall market witnessed a 7 percent year-on-year increase.

The telecommunication equipment market includes products for broadband access, microwave and optical transmission, mobile core network and wireless access network, SP routers, and carrier-grade switches.

The report reveals the the top seven supplier companies in this segment, which include Huawei, Nokia, Ericsson, ZTE, Cisco, Ciena, and Samsung. All these companies accounted for about 80 percent to 85 percent of the overall market. It also reveals that Huawei’s market share has increased by 2-3 percent points through the year 2020.

On the other hand, Ericsson and Nokia have increased their RNA market share outside of China. Further, the report adds that revenue for these companies continue to be affected because of the status of deployment of 5G communication technology, especially in the highly concentrated market.

In the year 2020, Huawei had 31 percent market share in terms of revenue, followed by Nokia and Ericsson, both of them having 15 percent share. ZTE, Cisco, and Ciena ranked fourth, fifth, and sixth with 10 percent, 6 percent, and 3 percent market share respectively. South Korean giant Samsung came seventh with 2 percent share.

This growth is primarily driven by their home country China and its 5G network.

For those unaware, Huawei, Nokia, Ericsson, ZTE, Cisco, Ciena, and Samsung are the top seven telecom equipment providers in the world; and in the third quarter of this year, Huawei arrived first with a 30 percent market share, which is up from 28 percent during the same period from back in 2019. Similarly, ZTE also saw a 2 percent rise from 9 percent in Q3 2019, to 11 percent in the third quarter of this year.

Editor’s Pick: Global Smartphone production revives in Q3 2020; Xiaomi, OPPO dominate Samsung in QoQ rise

The primary reason for the growth in market share is apparently due to either company working on providing 5G infrastructure in China. The country is one of the first nations to offer commercial 5G and has been putting in efforts to raise its adoption rates and coverage for the newer and faster bandwidth. However, during this same period,, the other major telecom equipment providers like Nokia, and Samsung saw a fall in market share, as per a TelecomLead report.

Apart from the Chinese firms, most others saw a fall during Q3 2020, with Samsung’s market share falling from 3 percent to 2 percent year on year. Furthermore, Nokia, the second largest network equipment provider also had its share fall from 16 percent in 2019, to 14 percent in 2020. Both Ericsson and Ciena saw no rise and fall during this period with a steady 14 percent and 3 percent respective market share. Although, Cisco also saw a fall from 7 percent to 6 percent in the third quarter.

The Chinese tech giant is a known leader in the telecommunication equipment and has entered into an agreement with Indonesia to develop talent in 5G technology and its related fields in the region. The company is set to train 100,000 people to become proficient in digital technology, especially in sectors regarding cloud and 5G networking. Huawei will even set up its internal employee training in the country based on the memorandum of understanding.

For those unaware, Nokia is also a known telecom equipment maker, with various countries with anti Chinese sentiments opting for Nokia’s equipment. According to a new The Elec report, Huawei’s market share in the first half of 2020 reached 31 percent, which is a rise from 28 percent from back in 2019. Nokia arrives second with a market share of just 14 percent during the same period, dropping from 16 percent last year.

Editor’s Pick: Redmi 9i launch on September 15 officially confirmed; Likely to arrive with Rs 7,999 (~$109) pricing

Furthermore, Huawei had first surpassed Nokia back in 2015 and has since been widening the gap between itself and the Finnish vendor. Ericsson, a Swedish brand, came in at 14 percent market share in 2020, which has remained unchanged since 2019. Another Chinese brand that rounds up the group is ZTE, with a market share of 11 percent, rising from just 9 percent year on year.

Both Huawei and ZTE have seen a jump in shares thanks to the adoption of the newer and faster bandwidth in China. On the other hand, Nokia has been more or less excluded in the 5G infrastructure in China, while it has seen more popularity in the west, which is a clear indicator of the frictions between China and other western nations. Lastly, Cisco and Ciena came in fifth and sixth respectively in the wired equipment market.

This can occur due to Huawei equipment being forcibly removed from the UK’s telecommunications infrastructure.

According to representatives from Vodafone and BT, it would take a minimum of five years before the UK government can completely remove the Chinese tech giant’s equipment without causing a major disruption in networking. For those unaware, Huawei had initially been granted the role of providing equipment for 5G networking in the region, albeit with limitations.
While Huawei had a market cap of 35 percent, but since it is a high risk vendor, it cannot be allowed to work in core areas.
According to Andrea Dona, Vodafone UK Head, “Should the guidance become stricter it will have an effect, it will delay the rollout of our 5G, it will have cost implications and focus our investment in the removal of the existing equipment.
The report states that the common kitchen appliance is capable of negatively impacting the strength of the Wi-Fi networks in houses when it is being used. Apparently, a Microwave oven is only one of the many household items that can potentially hamper Wi-Fi signals at your home. Other objects like a baby monitor, halogen lamp, cordless phones, dimmer switches, stereo speakers, TV, monitors and more can interfere with the Wi-Fi signal strengths that come from the router.

This arrives after Britain is facing issues regarding its data networking, especially mobile data. The UK regulatory agency has advised people to make calls over a landline or internet as it is currently more reliable than the standard mobile calls due to heavy traffic in the data bandwidth. Even local telecom operators are providing Wi-Fi calling to aid the user’s cellular signals, which is too weak to handle a conversation.

Nokia is one of the three major players in the telecom equipment market, with the other two being Ericsson and Huawei. Right now, the company is in talks to acquire Comptel (Comptel Corporation), another Finnish company that deals in software communications.

The acquisition will help Nokia advance its software strategy and stay relevant in the 4G mobile broadband equipment production. The acquisition will cost Nokia $370 million with Nokia offering €3.04 in cash per share. Comptel’s board of directors have unanimously agreed to accept the offer and will recommend that shareholders do the same too.

Comptel is said to be a long-time partner of Nokia. It was founded in 1986 and operates in countries like Bulgaria, Malaysia, India and the United Kingdom alongside its home country. The acquisition is expected to not have an effect on the jobs at Comptel.
