<p><a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/apple">Apple</a> is constantly trying to revolutionize its <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/iphone">iPhone</a> lineup via R&amp;D, and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/01/25/apple-to-grab-first-dibs-on-tsmcs-2nm-technology/">past leaks have informed us </a>that the company is planning on integrating the advanced <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/2nm">2nm</a> processor technology developed by <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/tsmc">TSMC</a>. This development, though expected by many, is a significant step forward in Apple&#8217;s roadmap to enhance the performance and efficiency of its devices. Another piece of information has surfaced and is now backing up the previously leaked information.</p>

<h2>The mass production of these chips will kick off in 2025</h2>

<p>The revelation that Apple is actively designing these next-generation chips was hinted at through a leaked <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/linkedin">LinkedIn</a> profile of an Apple employee. This leak, while not groundbreaking, offers a glimpse into Apple&#8217;s strategic moves in the tech landscape. TSMC&#8217;s announcement to kick off mass production of 2nm chips by 2025, with Apple reportedly securing the first batch &#8211; this is quite an exciting time to be an Apple fan.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="1007" height="635" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-10.png?x10805" alt="Apple" class="wp-image-595521" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-10.png 1007w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-10-300x189.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-10-768x484.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-10-696x439.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image-10-666x420.png 666w" sizes="(max-width: 1007px) 100vw, 1007px" /><figcaption>Apple Fails During the Double 11 promotion, netizen demand refund &#8211; Gizmochina</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>The LinkedIn profile in question, though heavily redacted, mentioned involvement in &#8220;TS2nm&#8221; technology, alongside previous work on 5nm and 3nm chips. This indicates a deep-rooted expertise in chip development, with a background that spans several tech heavyweights including <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/google">Google</a>, <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/amd">AMD</a>, <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a>, and <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/qualcomm">Qualcomm</a>.</p>

<p>This news could suggest that Apple is preparing to push the envelope with its <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/iphone-17-pro">iPhone 17 Pro</a> and <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/iphone-17-pro-max">iPhone 17 Pro Max</a> models, expected in 2025. The shift to 2nm technology will offer significant advancements in terms of processing speed and energy efficiency, potentially transforming user experiences with faster, more capable devices that don&#8217;t compromise on battery life. And let&#8217;s be honest, Apple&#8217;s past few iterations have shown us what optimization can achieve in a flagship device. </p>

<p>Processor technology is advancing rapidly. This means that chips are becoming more powerful, smaller, and more efficient. For example, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-14-pro-max/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iPhone 14 Pro Max</a> uses a 4 nm chip. Even though 3 nm chips have not yet been released, TSMC has recently started preparing to trial-produce 2 nm chips. Here are the details&#8230;</p>

<h2><strong>TSMC to start 2nm chip trial production for Apple and Nvidia</strong></h2>

<p>TSMC is preparing to trial-produce 2 nm chips. This is a major step forward for the semiconductor industry, as it means that even more powerful and efficient chips are on the horizon. The company has sent 1,000 R&amp;D people to work at its new factory in Taiwan. This facility is still under construction, but soon, it will be a state of the art semiconductor manufacturing plant when it is completed. TSMC plans to start mass production of 2 nm products in 2025.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/tsmc-2nm-chip-production-1024x576.jpeg?x10805" alt="" class="wp-image-546511" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/tsmc-2nm-chip-production-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/tsmc-2nm-chip-production-300x169.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/tsmc-2nm-chip-production-768x432.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/tsmc-2nm-chip-production-1536x864.jpeg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/tsmc-2nm-chip-production-696x392.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/tsmc-2nm-chip-production-1068x601.jpeg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/tsmc-2nm-chip-production-747x420.jpeg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/tsmc-2nm-chip-production.jpeg 1600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>TSMC&#8217;s 2nm technology is expected to significantly outperform its previous 3nm chips in terms of both speed and power consumption. Specifically, the 2nm chips will be 10-15% faster than their 3nm counterparts while using the same power voltage. Furthermore, they will consume 25-30% less power than 3nm chips when operating at the same speed. These advancements are expected to boost the performance of devices using these chips, offering faster processing speeds while consuming less energ</p>

<p>TSMC&#8217;s move to prepare for 2nm production may seem insignificant at first, but it&#8217;s actually a very big deal. TSMC manufactures chips for dozens of tech giants, including Apple and Nvidia. This means that 2nm production could lead to much more powerful phones, computers, graphics cards, and gaming consoles. The smaller size and less energy consumption of 2nm chips could also help to overcome overheating issues. This could make handheld consoles and gaming laptops more stable and reliable.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400">In its recent annual report to shareholders, TSMC has announced that it has kick-started research and development for the 2nm process in 2019 itself. The semiconductor manufacturing company is yet to deliver</span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/04/13/apple-places-more-orders-for-5nm-chips-from-tsmc-for-iphone-12/"><span style="font-weight: 400"> Apple’s next-gen 5nm mobile chip</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400"> slated to release in the last quarter of this year.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">For context, the 2nm chips will be able to hold 3.5 times more transistors than the now best 7nm chipsets available in the market.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Additionally, it also revealed the </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/04/17/tsmc-3nm-process-development-is-on-schedule/"><span style="font-weight: 400">roadmap for 3nm chips</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400"> lask week, which is progressing as planned. The first batch of risk production is expected to begin in 2021, followed by volume production in the second half of 2022.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">The only major competitor for TSMC is Samsung, however, it is yet to mass-manufacture 5nm chips and has even </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/04/07/samsung-3nm-mass-production-delayed/"><span style="font-weight: 400">delayed 3nm chipsets</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400"> to 2022 due to COVID-19 pandemic.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Nevertheless, although TSMC has started working on 2nm chips, we won’t be able to see it anytime soon. The earliest we can expect it to be ready for the masses is 2025.</span></p>
