Logistics company UPS has commenced testing its mini electric delivery vans as a cleaner alternative to its ICE trucks. These electric vans which are somewhat four-wheeled e-bikes come on the heels of similar moves by the USPS. The US testing follows similar tests carried out by UPS in Europe earlier this year.

The new UPS mini electric vans use a mid-drive electric motor paired with a set of bicycle pedals. The quadricycle is called the eQuad produced by Fernhay. The eQuad is a four-wheeled e-assist cycle designed for pickups and deliveries in places where a larger van need not reach. It is 33 inches wide and less than 3 meters long. Its versatility means it can enter places where a bicycle can. The UPS eQuad will therefore be useful for last-mile deliveries quickly and more efficiently. The cargo space is up to 6 feet long and is swappable as a modular system.

The Fernhay eQuad could prove a great asset in congested urban settings and also useful for small cargo deliveries. It is designed to share the bike lane with other bicycles. The low load area and high seat allow the rider to have greater visibility around the eQuad. The testing is being carried out in New York. The success of the UPS eQuad delivery vans in New York will see the program extending to other cities. There is no word yet on timelines for the completion of testing of the eQuad in New York.

Vermont-based tech startup Beta Technologies has signed a deal with United Parcel Service (UPS) to produce 150 electric vertical takeoffs and landing aircraft. UPS will deploy the aircraft to cut delivery times and access small markets more efficiently. Beta will make the first deliveries of 10 evTOL aircraft in 2024.

The electric aircraft from Beta Technologies has a 400km range, with a top speed of 274kph (about 170 mph), and can carry a payload of about 635kg. The aircraft will provide UPS with greater efficiency in moving time-sensitive and other important deliveries for small markets. They would avoid airport protocols as the aircraft will take off and land on UPS facilities. The evTOL aircraft would ultimately incorporate autonomous technology, but the current deliveries will all be the piloted version.

UPS’s move to acquire electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft is bound to substantially improve its operational efficiency when the aircraft becomes operational in 2024. According to Kyle Clark, the founder, and CEO of Beta Technologies, it will bypass the use of airports and create a micro air feeder network without the noise or operating emissions of fixed-winged aircraft.

The evTOL aircraft manufacturer Beta Technologies has made solid progress in the development and deployment of electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft and will also provide its proprietary modular charging stations for rapid recharge of the aircraft. The charging stations can rapidly recharge the aircraft within one hour and provide charging support for UPS’s growing electric vehicle fleet. The charging stations make use of aircraft batteries which are no longer capable of use in flights.

Both UPS and Beta Technologies are optimistic about the potentials of the deal, which will open new business opportunities and enhance the efficiency of the logistics giant’s ground operations while also drastically reducing UPS’s carbon emission profile.

Chinese consumer electronics manufacturer Orico has announced a new powerbank with a mammoth 100,000mAH capacity. The powerbank is named MOUPS and has the ability to change multiple devices, even smaller powerbanks, all at the same time. In reality, though, the Orico MOUPS is more of a portable uninterrupted power supply (UPS) gadget, as it can be used to power small refrigerators, TV, radios, mini drones, Notebooks etc.

The Orico MOUPS comes in two capacities, one with 50,000mAh battery capacity and the beast with a 100,000mAh battery. Both versions feature four USB interface which can be used to connect up to four different gadgets. They both also support Quick Charge 3.0 with a maximum output power of up to 18W.

The MOUPS (50000mAh & 100,000mAh) both use Panasonic, Samsung and LG batteries. The device also comes with LED lights that can be used for outdoor camping at night or any other activity in the dark. The gadget also comes with a 220V AC outlet in addition to the DC outlets and four USB ports.
