Xiaomi 14 & Xiaomi 14 Ultra outsells the Xiaomi 13 in Europe

For those unaware, the Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Ultra hit the European market this week. These are the newest premium grade devices from the company and appear to be a lot more popular than the Xiaomi 13 and the Xiaomi 13 Ultra from last year. Lu Weibing, Xiaomi President and Redmi General Manager revealed that the newer smartphones are outselling the older models by a large margin.

The two flagship phones only recently went on sale in the region but the top end Xiaomi 14 Ultra model sales have tripled over last year’s 13 Ultra. On the other hand, the Xiaomi 14 has impressed even more with sales that are a whopping six times higher than the older Xiaomi 13 at the same time last year.

It is worth noting that these sales figures from the Chinese tech giant likely refer to the initial hours of the sale rather than overall availability since the Xiaomi 14 lineup is still quite new. To recall, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra was just launched in China recently and has also been selling better than the 13 Ultra.

According to Italian authorities, the company’s local business charged customers after confirming that the products were of good quality, but the company should instead examine potential flaws and accept product returns without collecting any fees, including freight and inspection expenses.

Xiaomi responded to domestic media by saying it was aware of the decision and was investigating the reasons for it. The company also stated that it has always conducted lawful and compliant activities, adhering to local relevant laws and regulations. According to the company, it is devoted to offering the greatest after-sales service experience to every consumer.

According to a StrategyAnalytics report, the Chinese tech giant saw a year on year growth of 14 percent in Q2 2021. During this quarter, the company shipped a total of 50 million units. The report added that the smartphone market’s recovery driven and the recovery of the economy also enabled healthy demand from consumers with aging devices, along with growing appeal for newer handsets that support 5G networking.

Boris Metodiev, Associate Director at Strategy Analytics stated that, “The European markets for smartphones had a strong quarter driven by Covid recovery, following the crash in 2020. The highlight of the quarter is Xiaomi emerging as the number one vendor in shipment terms for the first time. Xiaomi shipped almost 13 million units on the continent to displace longtime leader Samsung. Xiaomi has seen great success in Russia, Ukraine, Spain and Italy among others and found customers eager for its Mi and Redmi series of feature rich, value smartphones.”

While the Chinese brand saw growth during this period, South Korean tech giant Samsung saw a year on year decline of 7 percent in Europe, with 12 million units shipped in Q2. Furthermore, it also faced stiff competition with Apple in the high end market, meanwhile, it also failed to take advantage of Huawei‘s decline in the region. The Cupertino based giant, on the other hand, saw a 16 percent year on year growth in this time, shipping 10 million units in Europe.

We have seen several memes surrounding it, one we find hilarious suggest by 2030 Apple will ship only a retail box, leaving pout the smartphone because we already have one. Several OEMs have also capitalized on the issue to troll Apple, including Samsung, and Xiaomi Spain.

We unboxed the #Mi10TLite – Atlantic Blue variant You'll get all the essentials, just with less plastic waste. Starting in Europe, we've committed to reducing plastic packaging by about 60%. pic.twitter.com/ai1yq3YR92

— Xiaomi (@Xiaomi) October 20, 2020

Away from jokes and trolling, Xiaomi has committed to reducing the plastic it uses on its packaging by up to 60% and this will start in Europe. The firm seems to have swung into action in this regard as the Mi 10T Lite looks to be the first phone that it will be implemented on.

The retail box of today contains less plastic than a couple of years back as manufacturers try to reduce the cost of production. Xiaomi’s posture which is aimed at conserving the planet but you will still find all the accessories the Chinese tech giant usually ships with its smartphones such as the charger, USB-C cable and even the TPU case. The Mi 10 Lite which was launched earlier this year in Europe featured these accessories inside the retail box.

Overall, this can’t be said to be a drastic commitment towards environmental conservation compared to Apple’s stance. After all, the retail boxes are most times useless the moment we unbox the smartphone Moreover, the retail boxes are mostly made from carton. Thus, this could be another attempt at grabbing some publicity riding on the shoulders of Apple’s controversial decision.

Recall that when Apple removed the 3.5mm audio jack from the iPhones, it generated this kind of controversy but subsequently, other OEMs also followed suit by dishing the headphone jack in favour of a USB-C port. Some fans are yet to get around with that decision and it will be even more difficult to remove the adapter for companies like Xiaomi whose flagships have up to 100W wired and 80W wireless charging support. Apple’s 20W USB Power Delivery adapters are pretty easy to come by than the 100W adapters.

If you live in Europe and have been looking for a way to get your hands on the speaker all the way from Asia, it has been reported by Winfuture that Xiaomi will be bringing it to the old Continent.

The source says they have been informed by retailers that the speaker will soon be announced in Europe. It appears the speaker will come in a different color from the one sold in India as shown in the images we have attached to the post. Good luck telling people it isn’t a Sonos One.

Notwithstanding, it will retain its affordable price tag as the source said they have been informed it will sell for €52.99 in Spain and €59.95 in Portugal. Google’s Nest Audio speaker is not available in a lot of countries in Europe but is priced at €97.47 in Germany.

The Mi Smart Speaker has a 12W 2.5” speaker unit that pumps out sounds loud enough to fill whichever room you place it in. It has touch-sensitive buttons including a mute button at the top as well as two far-field microphones to pick up your voice commands. The speaker connects via 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi and also has Bluetooth 4.2. You can pair two units together for a stereo setup. It weighs 853 grams but since it is not battery operated, you won’t be moving it around.

There is no date yet for the launch but we can expect it to go on sale before the end of October.

A new report has suggested that the company might be planning on bringing the new 10,000mAh power bank to the region, as per a trusted source.

According to a MySmartPrice report, the Mi Power Bank 3 Ultra Compact will be launching in Europe soon and as its name suggests, will feature a light and compact design to offer better portability, weighing just 200 grams and 90×63.9×24.2mm in measurements. Looking at the product images, the size of the new power bank is quite small and measures somewhere close to the length of an average credit card. Its power capacity is 10,000mAh while its rating capacity is around 5,500mAh.

Editor’s Pick: Huawei, Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo made the Huran Top 5 Consumer Electronics Brands list in China in 2020

The Xiaomi Mi Power Bank 3 Ultra Compact is small and also offers a new finish on top, which is likely to allow for a better grip on the compact device. The battery is a lithium polymer cell inside the shell that also houses four ports in total. This includes two USB Type A, one Type C, and one Micro USB port. Notably, it also supports dual input and can be charged using both the Micro-USB and the Type-C charging port.

Furthermore, the power bank supports up to 24W PD (power delivery) input via the Type-C port, and up to 18W through the micro-USB port. The Xiaomi power bank takes 6 hours to completely charge using a standard 5V/2A charger, and 3.5 hours with a 24W PD charger. Through the two USB Type A and a Type C port, it can also charge up to 3 devices simultaneously.

The brand first launched its products officially in the region in November 2017 with a launch event in Spain. But the company seems to have gained some traction in Western Europe and recently, Xiaomi’s CFO revealed plans to expand in the region.

A Xiaomi Store in China

A market analytics report by Strategy Analytics has indeed confirmed Xiaomi’s rise in Western Europe. The report claims the Chinese company is now firmly established as the fourth-largest smartphone vendor in the region, only behind the likes of Samsung, Apple and Huawei. This is despite having zero presence there just 2.5 years ago.

Xiaomi’s rise is attributed to the continuous collaboration with local operators, resulting in huge gains across Western Europe. Much of that growth was achieved at the expense of Huawei, which continues to shrink in the region following the US ban.

Xiaomi’s total global smartphone shipments remained flat annually in Q1 2020. Despite the lack of growth, the company performed much better than the overall smartphone market, which declined -17% YoY in Q1 2020. Xiaomi’s global market share by volume thus increased to all-time high of 10%.

“In an extremely challenging environment, due to the COVID-19 crisis, which affected the industry both on the demand and supply side, Xiaomi was affected to a lesser extent than the other big Chinese brands (Huawei, Oppo, vivo), because of its more diverse geographical footprint and online channel distribution approach”, the report states.

Xiaomi has garnered a towering reputation for its large ecosystem consisting of smartphones, smartwatches, smart home gadgets and other IoT products. Over time, the Chinese brand has released more products on Mi Stores across various European cities. The company may even be planning to release more IoT products in Europe if a leaked list of upcoming Xiaomi IoT products is to be believed.

The list is said to contain Xiaomi’s product roadmap for the European market and contains some products that haven’t been launched at all, like the mi TV Stick. Also, some of the products have already been announced when Xiaomi announced the Mi 10 series for Europe. The Mi True Wireless Earphones 2 is one of them, the Mi AIoT Router AC2350 is another. Both products alongside the Mi Robot Vaccum Mop 1C and Mi TV Stick are expected to be released in May.
