Over the last couple of weeks, we have reported on WhatsApp working on a number new features and functions. And now, the company has rolled out a new update that lets users directly message and even mute specific people in group calls.
The popular messaging platform is rolling out a new update for its group calling feature. This arrives shortly after expanding the group chat limit to support 512 people, raising the file sharing limit, and even adding the ability move chat history from Android to iPhone. Now, the company is bringing an update that lets users mute or message certain people that are a part of the group chat.
This feature has been highly requested and was announced by William Cathcart, the Head of WhatsApp at Meta. He shared the announcement on Twitter so now users can manually mute participants in a group who either forgot to turn off their microphones during group calls or accidentally turned it on. In other words, its a good quality of life change to the chat app’s calling feature. Notably, the ability to mute individuals will be offered to everyone, rather than just the one who requested it.
Some new features for group calls on @WhatsApp: You can now mute or message specific people on a call (great if someone forgets to mute themselves!), and we've added a helpful indicator so you can more easily see when more people join large calls. pic.twitter.com/fxAUCAzrsy

So if one mutes a person in the group call, no one else can hear them either. The person getting muted will have a mute icon appear next to their name. Another new function arriving to group calls is the ability to message specific people during the call itself. WhatsApp is also introducing a new banner than will notify users when someone joins the call after it begins.
