Portronics Muffs A: What’s in the box?

The retail package of the Portronics Muffs A includes the headphones, a small USB to USB-C cable, a 3.5mm to 3.5mm audio cable that measures slightly over 1 meter, and a user manual.

Design and Build Quality

The Portronics Muffs A on-ear (supra-aural) wireless headphones sport a minimalistic design. The headband and the rectangle-shaped earpads have a matte finish on the outside and memory foam cushioning on the inside. The earpad cushion appears fairly thick but isn’t really as dense as seen on more expensive headphones. The company’s logo is engraved on both earpads.

Both earpads swivel (90-degree) to the side, allowing them to be laid flat as shown in the image. However, it cannot be folded further. There is a 5-level extender on either side that can be simply glided to adjust the Muffs A’s size for different users.

The left earcup has a USB-C port and an indicator for charging. The right earcup features three buttons for volume +, an MFB (multi-function button), and volume -. A 3.5mm audio jack, a Bluetooth connectivity indicator, and a microphone are also available on the right earcup.

These physical buttons make a clicky sound when they are pressed. It would have been better if Portronics had provided silent buttons on the Muffs A. The headphones are entirely made out of hard plastic, and the quality appears to be good. It weighs only 168 grams.

Comfort

The Muffs A’s earpads are suitable for most ear shapes and sizes. The fit is comfortable. Since they are lightweight and do not feel hard on the ears, one can use them for a longer period, wear them during workouts, or walk around with them. However, if the weather is very hot or humid, some may experience sweating around the ears. Thankfully, they are sweatproof.

Features

The MFB button can be used to play or pause a song. It can also be used to receive or end the call. It can be double pressed to activate a voice assistant like Google Assistant. The volume + key can be long pressed to change songs, while the volume key can be long pressed to listen to the previous song.

On the connectivity front, the Muffs A comes with support for Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity. There is no official word on the supported codecs. It can simultaneously connect to two devices via Bluetooth.

Once Muffs A is turned on, it instantly connects with the paired device. I had no problems connecting it with a Windows PC or an iPad. I noticed a slight latency while playing games, but it’s not a major concern.

The Muffs A comes with a big 520mAh battery. Even if the battery dies, the 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable that comes with the Muffs A can be used to connect the headphones to a smartphone, tablet, or laptop so that music can still be played. There is no wear detection feature onboard, meaning that the Muffs A will continue to play music even if they are taken off. Hence, users need to manually pause before taking it off.

Sound and Call Quality

The Portronics Muffs A feature 40mm audio drivers and offer a good listening experience no matter what music genre you pick. The audio performance is impressive with the right amount of bass and offers clarity when listening at high volume levels. When the bass is played, listeners may feel slight vibrations on the earpads. I did not experience any rattling while listening to the bass. The Muffs A also produce a balanced output with trebles and vocals. It offers an immersive experience while watching movies.

As for the call quality of the Muffs A, I was able to hear the other person’s voice without any problem. However, the recipient could hear my voice but with less clarity. Sometimes, he could not understand what I was saying, and I had to repeat myself. However, I believe the quality is manageable for a device, and I can’t expect more from wireless headphones priced between Rs 1,500 and Rs 2,000.

There is no ANC support on the Muffs A. However, the company claims the wireless headphones are equipped with noise reduction technology, but it has not said anything more about it.

Battery Life

The Muffs A pack a 5,20mAh battery, which can be charged using the USB-C port. It took me around an hour to achieve a full charge.

According to Portronics, it can offer up to 30 hours of playtime. For me, a fully charged Muffs A was able to last around 10 days. I believe users will be impressed by its battery life.

Verdict

The Muffs A is surely something to recommend for people who are interested in purchasing affordable wireless headphones. I particularly liked it to listen to music while working and watching Formula 1 races. The build quality is fine, the audio quality is good, and the battery life is excellent. It’s not only me, but even people who have used it have left good reviews about the Muffs A on Amazon.
