Gaming phones reached an outstanding level and they become a big niche of the smartphone market. Now, several brands are releasing gaming-centric devices. Among the most important ones there are Nubia and ASUS. Just a few days ago, Nubia launched a new flagship gaming phone: the RED MAGIC 8 Pro, equipped with the latest Qualcomm mobile platform and a huge battery. Earlier this year, ASUS came up with the ROG Phone 6D: the first ASUS gaming phone with a MediaTek flagship SoC. Which of these phones is actually the best? You can start to understand by learning the differences in this comparison between the main specifications of the RED MAGIC 8 Pro and the ROG Phone 6D.

Design

The Nubia Red Magic 8 Pro has an outstanding design. It has a very high screen to body ratio, with very narrow bezels around the display and even a front camera hidden under the screen. It is built with premium materials including a glass back and an aluminum frame, and it also comes in a special varaint with a transparent back. The phone is equipped with pressure sensitive zones you can actually use as triggers, with a touch sampling rate of 520 Hz, and its middle frame is made of aviation aluminum. Due to its thicker bezels around the display, the Asus ROG Phone 6D is less impressive for average users, but it has an amazing design for gamers. It includes an illuminated RGB light on the rear side and it is built with a glass back and an aluminum frame. It has pressure sensitive zones just like its rival and it is also water resistant with the IPX4 certification.

Display

It looks like the Asus ROG Phone 6D offers the best display. It is an AMOLED panel able to show up to one billion colors with a diagonal of 6.78 inches, a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2448 pixels, an amazing 165 Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ certification, and a peak brightness of 1,200 nits. With the Nubia Red Magic 8 Pro, you get an AMOLED display with one billion colors, a diagonal of 6.8 inches, a Full HD+ resolution, and a 120 Hz refresh rate. Both phones pack stereo speakers and an in-display fingerprint reader for authentication.

Specs & Software

The best hardware setup belongs to the Nubia Red Magic 8 Pro. It is fueled by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset built at 4 nm with an octa-core architecture composed of a Cortex X3 CPU running at a max frequency of 3.2 GHz, two Cortex A715 cores, two Cortex A710 cores, three Cortex A510 cores, and an Adreno 740 GPU. Alongside the chipset, there are up to 12 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of native UFS 4.0 storage. The Asus ROG Phone 6D gets a less impressive chipset: the Dimensity 9000+ by Mediatek running at 3.35 GHz and built with a 4 nm production process. On the other hand, it sports a higher quantity of RAM: up to 16 GB, as well as NTFS support for external storage. However, I prefer the Nubia Red Magic 8 Pro not only for the processor, but also because it has a built in cooling fan able to dissipate the heat in a better way.

Camera

It looks like the Asus ROG Phone 6D is the gaming phone with the best camera of the duo. You can not consider it a camera phone, but it is not a bad device to take photos. It has a triple rear camera including a 50 MP main sensor, a 13 MP ultrawide shooter, and a 5 MP macro lens.

Battery

These two phones have the same battery capacity: 6000 mAh, and they should offer comparable battery life. But the Nubia Red Magic 8 Pro charges quicker thanks to 80W fast charging.

Price

The Asus ROG Phone 6D starts from $800/€750, while you need about $583/€550 for the Red Magic 8 Pro in China. Which one would you choose?
