Popular tipster Revegnus (@Tech_Reve) recently revealed that Samsung will begin mass production of rollable screen smartphones by 2025, setting the stage for a revolutionary shift in smartphone design and functionality. The upcoming phones are touted to showcase advanced Under Panel Camera (UPC) technology and a cutting-edge bezel-less design.

From foldables to rollables: Samsung eyes 2025

This recent revelation aligns with Samsung’s prior showcases of their innovative screen technologies. At the 2022 K-Display event, Samsung turned heads by unveiling prototype models of rollable screens, foldable tablets, and intriguingly named products like “Flex G” and “Flex S.” Given their track record, Samsung’s foray into rollable screen smartphones isn’t wholly unexpected.

Another testament to their dedication to flexible displays came at the 2023 SID Display Week in the U.S., where Samsung Display presented a 12.4-inch flexible rollable OLED panel. This panel captivated attendees by stretching from a compact 49 millimeters to an impressive 254.4 millimeters, offering a transformative 5-fold magnification.

The buzz around the anticipated borderless design also stirs significant interest. Korean media giant, The Elec, has previously reported collaborations between Samsung, LG, and Apple, targeting the development of OLED displays without any front-facing borders. The vision? Achieve a display with zero border width, providing users with an immersive and uninterrupted visual experience.

Apple has also submitted a patent for a device incorporating a rollable or scrollable display, indicating potential integration into future products like iPhones, iPads, and Macbooks. According to a past report, Apple is working to launch a foldable screen MacBook in 2026.

Meeting such ambitious design goals necessitates further advancements in display technology. Both Samsung Display and LG Display are on a mission to refine the Thin Film Encapsulation (TFE) and Under Panel Camera (UPC) technologies.

However, they also face the challenge of ensuring adequate antenna space in these futuristic designs. As these tech giants grapple with these technological nuances, the industry and consumers eagerly await a new era of smartphone innovation.
