The highly anticipated launch of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, expected on July 9th, is already facing stiff competition as Honor has unveiled its Magic V5, claiming the title of the world’s thinnest foldable smartphone. This development, just a week before Samsung’s Unpacked event, casts a shadow over one of the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s anticipated key selling points.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 Teaser

The Honor Magic V5 boasts an impressive slim profile, measuring a mere 8.8mm when folded and an even more svelte 4.1mm when unfolded. This significantly undercuts the rumored dimensions of the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which is expected to be thinner than its predecessor but not quite as groundbreaking as Honor’s offering. While the Magic V5 is currently exclusive to the Chinese market, its eventual global release poses a direct challenge to Samsung’s dominance, particularly in the premium foldable segment outside the US.

According to prominent leaker Ice Universe, the battle for the thinnest and lightest foldable is nuanced. While the Honor Magic V5 achieves its “thinnest” status in a specific white version (8.8mm folded, with other colors at 9.0mm), and the Vivo X Fold 5 boasts a lightest-only black version at 217g (other colors near 230g), the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is tipped to achieve both lightness and thinness across all its versions, coming in at a reported 8.9mm and 215g. This suggests that while Honor and Vivo might have niche “extreme” versions for marketing, Samsung aims for a more universally accessible and optimized design.

However, the news isn’t all rosy for Samsung. Another major concern for potential Galaxy Z Fold 7 users is the apparent lack of improvement in dust resistance. Leaker PandaFlashX suggests that the device will retain the same IP48 rating as its predecessor, the Z Fold 6. This means that while the phone offers decent water resistance (up to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes), it provides only limited protection against dust, specifically larger particles.

In stark contrast, the newly launched Honor Magic V5 comes equipped with IP58 and IP59 ratings for dust and water resistance, offering a higher degree of protection than Samsung’s anticipated offering. Beyond the IP rating, Honor has also focused on other durability aspects, including scratch-resistant outer glass and a hinge tested for an impressive 500,000 folds. Adding to its robust design, the Magic V5 even incorporates AI-based debris detection to prevent screen damage, showcasing a more comprehensive approach to foldable durability.

As the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s launch date approaches, the spotlight is firmly on Samsung to see if it can surprise with additional features or address these competitive concerns, particularly regarding the crucial aspect of device longevity and resistance to environmental factors. The foldable market is rapidly evolving, and while Samsung maintains a strong hold in certain regions, the aggressive innovations from competitors like Honor and Vivo are certainly shaking things up.
