The so-called DJI drone ban in the United States started in late December 2025, but it is not what many headlines made it sound like. DJI drones were not banned outright. The new rules mainly affect future imports and approvals. If you already own a DJI drone, you can still use it.

Why This Happened

The issue comes from the National Defense Authorization Act for FY2025. The law required a US national security agency to complete a formal security review of DJI by December 23, 2025.

That review did not happen by the deadline. Because of this, the Federal Communications Commission placed DJI equipment on its Covered List. Being on the Covered List does not ban ownership or use. It blocks new FCC equipment approvals, which are required to legally import and sell products in the US. That is what triggered the current restrictions.

Existing DJI Drones Are Not Banned

Many people think all DJI drones have become illegal. That is wrong. Any DJI model that already had FCC approval before December 23, 2025, can still be owned, used, and bought from existing US stock. The rule only affects new approvals, not products that were already certified. If a drone was approved before the deadline, it can still be sold in the US.

New DJI Drones Cannot Get FCC Approval

This is the biggest impact. Because DJI is now on the FCC Covered List, new drone models and radio equipment cannot receive FCC authorization. Without that approval, companies cannot legally import or sell those devices in the United States.

It uses four high-pressure water jets, a 16 mm waste outlet, and applies 12 newtons of downward force on the mop pads for effective dirt removal. This setup supports up to 200 days of maintenance-free operation. A three-stage sound suppression system cuts dust collection noise by up to 80 percent.

ROMO has a 164 ml onboard water tank to keep mop pads evenly damp and automatically adjusts water flow for tougher stains. ROMO P adds a separate compartment for floor deodorizer, allowing different routines for kitchens or full-home cleaning. The DJI Home app handles control and offers preset and customizable modes for carpets, thresholds, kitchens, bathrooms, and pet areas. Privacy features include encrypted video transmission and two-factor authentication for camera access. ROMO supports 55 W fast charging and reaches full charge in about 2.5 hours.

DJI has launched the Power 1000 Mini, a new portable power station that sits between compact power banks and larger power stations. The product has debuted in China, with a wider rollout expected later. It follows the launch of the Power 1000 V2, which reached markets like Europe in July 2025.

The Power 1000 Mini focuses on reducing size and weight while keeping a large battery. It uses a lithium iron phosphate battery with a capacity of around 1,000 Wh. The battery is rated to retain at least 80% capacity after 4,000 charge cycles. Power output is rated at 1,000 W, with support for an 800 W continuous load. This is enough to run laptops, cameras, drones, and other mid-power devices.

Compared to the Power 1000 V2, the Mini is smaller and lighter. It measures 314 × 212 × 216 mm and weighs 11.5 kg. For reference, the Power 1000 V2 measures 448 × 225 × 230 mm and weighs 14.2 kg. The Mini also includes an integrated handle to make carrying easier.

One of the key new features is a retractable USB-C cable built into the body. It supports up to 100 W bidirectional charging. The rest of the port selection includes one additional 100 W USB-C port, two 12 W USB-A ports, and two AC output sockets. This is half the number of AC outlets found on the Power 1000 V2. There is also an SDC port.

Charging is fast for a power station of this size. DJI states that a full charge takes about 75 minutes, while an 80% charge can be reached in under one hour. The unit can be charged using AC power, USB-C input, or solar panels.

The Power 1000 Mini also includes a built-in LED light, which can be useful for camping or low-light conditions. An SOS flashing mode is included for emergencies.

In China, the Power 1000 Mini is priced at CNY 2,499, or about $359. DJI has not yet confirmed when it will be available in other regions.

Enhanced intelligent tracking is the main upgrade

The biggest addition is the RS Enhanced Intelligent Tracking Module. It supports people, vehicles, and pets, and can maintain recognition at distances of up to 10 meters. DJI says the system can quickly re-acquire a subject even if it briefly leaves the frame, which should help during fast or unpredictable shots. Screen-based tracking also reduces reliance on gesture controls or external triggers.

Motor performance has been improved as well, with DJI claiming up to a 50% increase in peak torque. This is paired with the company’s fifth-generation stabilization algorithm, designed to handle quick directional changes and vertical shooting more effectively.

On the usability side, DJI has added a native electronic handheld adapter for easier one-handed operation and low-angle shots. There’s also a real-time Z-axis stability indicator on the display, intended to help operators adjust their movement and reduce vertical shake. Despite weighing just 1.46 kg with the grip and quick-release plate, the RS 5 supports payloads of up to 3 kg. Adjustable leveling knobs on all arms and a folded locking design aim to speed up balancing and transport. Battery life is rated at around 14 hours, with fast charging taking about an hour. An optional high-capacity battery can extend usage to roughly 30 hours.

Estimates suggest DJI controls between 70 and 90 percent of the commercial, government, and hobbyist drone space in the US. For many pilots, there is simply no comparable alternative.

The backlash has been immediate. Nearly 500,000 commercial drone pilots are registered in the US, and many rely on DJI equipment for work in construction, agriculture, real estate, infrastructure inspection, and public safety. Pilots argue that American-made drones are often more expensive and lag behind in performance.

“I’m a die-hard American-made advocate and drive a Chevrolet pickup truck,” said Eric Ebert, owner of Falcon Unmanned, a construction monitoring firm in Indiana. “But American drones are simply not competitive.”

Some operators are now stockpiling drones, batteries, and spare parts. One pilot working on solar and wind projects said he has already stored dozens of drones to keep operating through the next few years. “We know very well what 2026 means for us,” he said.

A recent survey by Greg Reverdiau of the Pilot Institute, based on responses from around 8,000 commercial pilots, paints a grim picture. About 43 percent said the ban would have an “extremely negative” or “potentially bankrupt” impact, while 85 percent said their businesses could survive two years or less without access to new foreign-made drones.

As petitions reach Congress and the White House, pilots warn that without viable domestic alternatives, the FCC’s move could cripple an industry that has become essential to modern infrastructure and emergency response.

Once you update the DJI Fly app to version 1.19.4, compatible Apple Watch models (Series 8, Ultra 2, Ultra 3, and newer) can take off, change flight modes, capture photos or videos, and even show exactly what the drone sees in real time. The feature is aimed at runners, cyclists, and hikers who want to travel light, but early users are already trying it in more creative ways.

Voice controls also get an upgrade. After granting the app microphone access, you can speak flight commands or use the watch as a remote mic to record commentary or ambient sound directly into your footage — a neat touch for vloggers or anyone who wants to narrate hands-free.

Leaker Igor Bogdanov recently posted a set of high-quality promo renders confirming the name Avata 360. These kinds of images usually appear a few weeks or months before DJI announces anything — the same pattern we saw with the Avata 2. But this time, the story moved faster. A supposed photo of the drone’s retail box also began circulating online.

It’s still not clear where the box image originally came from. Several X accounts shared what looks like the same photo, each one altered slightly with filters or blur to hide specific details, presumably to avoid getting anyone in trouble. The 2017 Mavic Pro Platinum followed earlier this year, with support ending in April. Those models join several well-loved classics that have already been retired: the first-gen Mavic Pro and the tiny DJI Spark lost support in October 2024, while even older Phantom 3 and early Phantom 4 variants were phased out way back in January 2023.

DJI has released the Neo 2, a compact 151 gram drone built for users who want something easy to carry and easy to control. It is the company’s lightest drone with omnidirectional obstacle sensing and brings new gesture controls, upgraded ActiveTrack and a SelfieShot mode aimed at quick everyday shooting.

A small display sits beside the camera to show the current shooting mode. The drone can lift off straight from the user’s palm by pointing it toward themselves and pressing the take off button. When the flight is done, the Return to Palm feature guides the drone back to the user’s hand so it can land safely without much effort.

Gesture Control is one of the main additions. Holding up one palm lets users move the drone left, right or adjust altitude. Using both palms makes it move closer or farther depending on how the hands shift. The camera angle can also be adjusted without a remote. The Neo 2 listens for voice commands through a smartphone or Bluetooth headphones, and those who want a longer range can connect it to the DJI RC N3 controller for up to 10 km of video transmission.

The drone also works with DJI’s motion controller and goggles for an FPV setup. It uses a 12 MP 1/2 inch CMOS sensor with an f/2.2 aperture and a new 2 axis gimbal that helps keep footage stable. This comes as DJI continues expanding beyond cameras and drones. The company just launched its first Romo-series robot vacuum internationally, and the Osmo Mobile 8 is expected to move beyond China soon. With multiple product lines in motion, a late-November slot for the Osmo Action 6 doesn’t seem far-fetched.

What’s special about DJI’s new mini drone?

The popular drone maker just announced the Neo 2 model in its home market of China. This release also arrives just ahead of the DJI Neo 2’s global release, which is tipped for November 13. The Neo 2 is slightly larger and heavier than the original Neo, measuring 151 grams in weight (160 grams with the Digital Video Transmission Module attachment). In comparison, the DJI Neo featured a 135 gram body. But despite the added heft, it offers a similar flight range and speed.

Under the hood, this tiny drone is powered by a 1,606 mAh (11.5 Wh) battery pack and features a built-in storage of 49GB. DJI equips the Neo 2 with a 1/2-inch camera sensor with a 119.8 degree FOV, f/2.2 aperture, and 4K/60 or 4K/100 fps video recording options, with a peak video bitrate of 80Mbps. The compact drone features dual axis gimbal for improved image stabilization, along with gesture controls, and an omnidirectional obstacle avoidance system that uses the front facing LiDAR sensor.

The DJI Neo 2 was just announced in China for 1,499 Yuan (roughly 211 US Dollars), marking a 200 yuan increase in price. Users can even buy the drone along with the batteries and a charging case for 1,999 Yuan, while the bundle with the RC-N3 controller costs 2,499 Yuan. Lastly, one can even buy the Motion 3 controller and Goggles N3 with the drone for 3,699 Yuan.
