Netflix Seems to be Moving Beyond the Basic Plan, UK and Canada to be the First Regions

Netflix seems to be charting a new course. The company’s recent decision to phase out its Basic plan marks a significant shift in its strategy, as revealed in its latest earnings call. The company has been grinding down hard on its cheaper plans to accommodate the rapidly inflating economy, and now, these steps are getting a bit too serious.

Netflix

The Basic plan, known for its affordability at $11.99 and ad-free viewing, has been a staple for many. However, in a landscape where content consumption is evolving, Netflix is adapting. The plan, which stopped being available to new or returning users last summer, is still in use by existing subscribers. But its days are numbered, with the UK and Canada set to see it phased out first.

This change is part of a broader trend in Netflix’s approach. The company’s focus is increasingly on its ad-supported content, which has seen a surge in popularity. In fact, ad-based subscriptions have grown by 70% quarter over quarter, now making up 40% of all new Netflix sign-ups in relevant markets.

What does this mean for subscribers? Options are narrowing. Once the Basic plan is gone, the ad-free experience will be limited to the Standard and Premium tiers. The Standard plan, at $15.49 per month, offers full HD streaming and support for two devices simultaneously. The Premium tier, priced at $22.99 per month, ups the ante with Ultra HD, streaming on six devices, and additional member options.

While some may see this as a reduction in choice, it’s a strategic move by Netflix. The streaming giant is not just tweaking its subscription models; it’s also investing in exciting content. The much-anticipated Squid Game Season 2 is set to release in 2024, and a new deal gives Netflix exclusive streaming rights to WWE Raw in 2025.

Apple Apparently Pushes Back the Launch of its Rumoured Electric Car

Apple has been on a rollercoaster ride in its quest to launch an electric vehicle. While the tech titan has maintained a shroud of secrecy around its automotive venture, known as Project Titan, recent developments suggest that the journey has been anything but smooth.

According to Bloomberg, Apple is recalibrating its goals again

The project, which has been gobbling up an estimated $1 billion annually, started with grand visions. Initially, Apple set its sights on creating a fully self-driving electric vehicle, potentially even a robotaxi. This ambition saw them recruit top talent from the automotive and battery sectors, including former Tesla employees.

Apple Car

However, the path to innovation is often fraught with challenges. Apple’s foray into electric vehicles is no exception. The company has had to recalibrate its goals multiple times, according to Bloomberg. The latest pivot seems to be a shift from a fully autonomous vehicle to one that offers assistance on highways but still requires human attention and intervention.

This change in direction is significant. It indicates a scaling back of ambitions and aligns Apple’s offering more closely with existing advanced cruise control systems seen in vehicles from Tesla and General Motors. The decision to adjust their vision might be seen as a pragmatic move, given the immense complexities and safety considerations involved in creating a fully autonomous vehicle.

Moreover, Apple’s timeline for launching its electric car has been pushed to 2028, a delay from its original 2026 target. This postponement could be a reflection of the intricate and costly nature of automotive innovation. The company’s leadership is reportedly at a crossroads, contemplating whether to continue pouring resources into the project or cut their losses if this new direction fails to yield results.

In the broader context, Apple’s endeavor comes at a time when the electric vehicle market is booming. With Tesla leading the charge and tech firms like Sony and Alphabet’s Waymo diving into the mix, the competition is fierce. Apple’s potential entry into this space could be a game-changer, not just because of its reputation for design and user experience, but also due to its track record of disrupting industries.

As Apple inches closer to its dream, the question remains: Can it carve out a unique niche in an already crowded market? Only time will tell if Apple’s electric car will revolutionize the industry or become a footnote in the annals of automotive history.

Notably, all brands except Vivo and Sony have already introduced smartphones powered by the SD8G3. Although the Vivo X100 Ultra, featuring this chip, is expected to debut in April, the Sony flagship is anticipated to be unveiled in the first half of the year. Interestingly, it was surprising to see that Motorola was not mentioned in the list. A fresh leak suggests that the Lenovo-owned brand will indeed launch a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 phone in the next few months in China.

Motorola’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 phone incoming

According to tipster Wisdom Pikachu, Motorola is working on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, and it will go official in Q2 2024. That’s it; there is nothing else known about the mysterious phone.

Motorola releases its flagship phones under the X-series in China and the Edge-series in the global market. To recollect, the company unveiled the Moto X40 featuring the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip in December 2022, and the same device was rebranded as the Motorola Edge 40 Pro for the global market in April 2023.

While there is no confirmation yet, there is a possibility that Motorola’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 may launch as the Moto X50 in China. The same device may get repackaged as the Motorola Edge 50 Pro in the global market.

Hopefully, the rumor mill will spill more details about the mysterious Motorola flagship phone in the coming weeks.

A new report by MySmartPrice, with prominent leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer (aka OnLeaks) as the source, has revealed the key details of the Pixel 9 Pro. Here is a look at all the details that have emerged through the leak.

Google Pixel 9 Pro design revealed

The publication has shared four CAD renders as well as a 360-degree video of the Google Pixel 9 Pro. The report reveals that the Pro model will be equipped with a 6.5-inch flat display, which means it will be smaller than the Pixel 8 Pro, which features a 6.7-inch AMOLED panel.

The screen has rounded corners and a centrally positioned punch-hole. As far as bezels are concerned, they appear quite thin, indicating that the device will offer an impressive screen-to-body ratio.

As per the report, the edges of the Pixel 9 Pro are flat, with the right side featuring a power key and a volume rocker. The left side of the device only has the antenna markings. The top edge of the Pixel 8 Pro has a microphone and an mmWave antenna cover, whereas the bottom features a SIM slot, a USB-C port, and a speaker grille.

The back panel of the Pixel 9 Pro will have a slightly redesigned horizontal camera module, which will comprise a main camera probably with support for a variable aperture, an ultra-wide lens, and a periscope telephoto camera. The thickness of the device at the camera will be 12mm, and its overall dimensions are said to be 162.7 x 76.6 x 8.5mm.

Apple’s Legal Battles in the UK: A Look at the $1 Billion App Store Fee Dispute

Apple, a household name in technology, is currently navigating turbulent waters in the United Kingdom. The core of the storm? A hefty lawsuit that’s putting the tech giant’s App Store policies under the microscope. The lawsuit, demanding a whopping $1 billion, represents more than 1,500 app developers who believe they’ve been wronged by Apple’s fee structure.

Apple App Store is a necessity for app developers to reach their audience

Here’s the crux of the issue: these developers argue that Apple’s commission fees, which can be as high as 30% on app purchases, are unfair. They feel Apple, using its strong market position, is overcharging them for the privilege of being on the App Store. This is a significant concern because, for many developers, being on the Apple App Store isn’t just a choice, it’s a necessity to reach a broad audience.

Apple

But Apple isn’t taking this lying down. Their defense hinges on an interesting point: most of their developers, about 85%, don’t pay any commission. This is because these developers offer free apps or apps that don’t have in-app purchases. Apple’s lawyers are pushing hard to dismiss the case, arguing that it’s baseless and that claims can only be made by those who were charged via the UK App Store.

The case, filed at the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) in London, isn’t just a standalone battle. It’s part of a broader narrative where Apple is facing several legal challenges over its App Store practices. This includes another massive lawsuit involving around 20 million UK users over App Store commissions and a separate case about iPhone batteries.

What does this mean for Apple and app developers? It’s a complex dance of power, legalities, and market dynamics. For Apple, it’s about defending its business model and practices, which have been a cornerstone of its success. For the developers, it’s a fight for fairer terms and a more level playing field. As these cases progress, they won’t just impact the involved parties; they could reshape how tech giants operate and interact with smaller players in the industry. With trials not expected until 2025, the tech world watches and waits to see how this legal drama unfolds.

Fortnite May Revive Kinetic Blades in Latest Chapter

Fortnite fans, brace yourselves! The buzz around the gaming community hints at a thrilling comeback of the Kinetic Blades in Chapter 5 of Fortnite. Known for their distinctive ability to revolutionize in-game movement and combat, these blades have caught the eye of leakers and data-miners alike. Wensoing, a prominent name in the Fortnite leak arena, stumbled upon intriguing files in the latest 28.10 update. What’s cooking, you ask? These files aren’t just any ordinary addition; they bring fresh animations and a revamped model for the Kinetic Blades!

This update seems to be a part of a bigger shift in movement mechanics in Fortnite

This discovery isn’t just a standalone update. It’s part of a bigger picture, linking to Epic Games‘ recent tweaks in movement mechanics. While it’s all speculative, the timing and the nature of these changes are too coincidental to ignore. The Kinetic Blades could be a game-changer, quite literally.

Fortnite

But wait, there’s more! The Fortnite universe is buzzing with crossover excitement. After the recent initiation of Fortnite downtime, data miners unveiled a second outfit/skin inspired by Metal Gear – Raiden, a character famed for his blade skills. Could this be a hint? Many think so. The link between Raiden’s arrival and the new Kinetic Blade files suggests a potential collaboration with Konami. Imagine wielding a newly modeled Kinetic Blade, reshaping how you move and fight in Fortnite’s world.

Speaking of new additions, let’s talk about the Raiden Outfit. Post-downtime, it’s likely to make a grand entry into the Fortnite Item Shop. This move aligns perfectly with the release of the Solid Snake Outfit, enabling players to dive deep into the Metal Gear vibe. And for those hungry for more, rumors are floating about a Gray Fox Outfit in the works. Though unconfirmed, it keeps the anticipation high.

As we inch closer to Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 4, the stakes are higher, and the excitement is palpable. Will the Kinetic Blades make a groundbreaking comeback? Only time will tell. But one thing’s for sure – Fortnite is keeping its game strong and its players on the edge of their seats!

MMR’s Latest E-MTB Innovation is a Sweet Blend of Tradition and Tech

Electric bikes are revolutionizing the way we ride, offering more power, technology, and versatility. But amidst this high-tech boom, a new trend is emerging – electric bikes that retain the classic pedal feel of traditional bicycles. This fresh approach is wonderfully exemplified by MMR’s latest electric mountain bike, the Kaizen, which combines the old-school joy of cycling with the modern benefits of electric assistance.

The e-MTB is powered by the Bosch Performance Line SX

Spanish bike brand MMR, known for its innovative designs, has introduced the Kaizen, a bike that’s as much about the journey as the destination. It’s crafted for those who relish the feeling of pedaling, yet appreciate a bit of a boost to make their rides longer and less exhausting. The Kaizen is not just a means of transport; it’s a celebration of the cycling experience itself.

E-Mtb

The heart of the Kaizen lies in its motor – the Bosch Performance Line SX. Launched in 2023, this motor is a game-changer for enthusiasts of electric gravel bikes and lightweight e-MTBs. With a focus on preserving the natural pedal feel, this low-power motor doesn’t overpower the ride. It delivers a modest 55 Nm of torque, ensuring that riders still enjoy a hands-on experience while benefiting from electric assistance.

MMR has managed to craft the Kaizen as a lightweight champion, weighing just 16.7 kilograms (36.8 pounds). This weight, coupled with the 29-inch wheels and a balanced 140-millimeter suspension travel, positions the Kaizen favorably for both cross country and all-mountain riding. It’s not just a bike; it’s a statement of balance and finesse.

Practicality isn’t overlooked, though. The Kaizen comes with the Bosch PowerTube 400 battery, perfect for those extended adventures. And for those who dare to go further, there’s an option to fit a 250-watt-hour range extender. The MMR Kaizen doesn’t just speak to the wallet; it speaks to the heart of biking enthusiasts. With five build configurations and a price range that reflects its varying levels of sophistication, the Kaizen is accessible yet aspirational.

Genshin Impact faces backlash, losing over a million followers over unsatisfactory New Year rewards

Genshin Impact, a popular online RPG game, recently faced a significant backlash from its Chinese player base. The controversy arose after the game’s developers, HoYoverse, announced modest rewards for the Lantern Rite Festival, a significant event celebrating the Chinese New Year. This decision was met with disappointment from players, especially in China, where the event is of great cultural importance.

Genshin-Impact-Crying-Klee

Backlash Over Lantern Rite Festival Rewards in Genshin Impact

The dissatisfaction among players was evident as the game’s official Douyin (Chinese version of TikTok) account experienced a massive loss of over one million followers in just one day, a drop from approximately 9.6 million to around 8 million. Similar declines in followers were observed on other social media platforms associated with Genshin Impact.

Players compared the rewards offered for the Chinese New Year event unfavorably with those given in other regions and to rewards in HoYoverse’s other games. This perceived imbalance led to accusations of global favoritism and a lack of appreciation for the Chinese audience. In response to the underwhelming rewards, players not only unfollowed Genshin Impact’s social media accounts but also targeted affiliated brands like KFC, Hey Tea, and Pizza Hut.

Amidst the outcry, allegations surfaced that HoYoverse was using bot accounts to artificially maintain follower counts on platforms like BiliBili, a major Chinese video-sharing website. This further fueled the discontent among the player community.

This situation has also sparked debates among players about the game’s reward system. While some argue that the response is an overreaction, others support the dissatisfaction, pointing to long-standing frustrations with HoYoverse. The controversy has extended to other social media platforms, with players expressing their disappointment and calling for better rewards.

HoYoverse issued an apology and promised to reassess and adjust the rewards. The situation underscored the challenges game developers face in balancing the expectations and cultural sensitivities of a diverse global audience.

As the debate continues, the future of Genshin Impact in the Chinese market depends on HoYoverse’s handling of this crisis and its ability to respond effectively to the concerns of its players.
