A California-based electric bike specialist, Vanpowers, is ushering in the new year with a bang by introducing two innovative electric bicycles. Ditching their usual utility-focused design, the company is now targeting cycling aficionados with their latest e-gravel and e-mountain bike offerings, unveiled at CES 2024.

One launch is an e-gravel bike, while the other is an e-MTB

The UrbanCross, Vanpowers’ new e-gravel bike, is a noteworthy entry into the booming e-gravel market. It boasts a sleek, lightweight design, combining a carbon fork and handlebars with an aluminum frame that’s versatile enough to accommodate various accessories. This model stands out with its tech-savvy features like a Bluetooth-enabled color display and advanced anti-theft measures including geofencing, and GPS and 4G tracking.

Electric Bikes

Performance-wise, the UrbanCross is equipped with a 250-watt rear hub motor and a battery seamlessly integrated into the frame, promising a range of up to 60 miles on a single charge. Available in Ultra and Pro versions, it offers either a 500W or 750W mid-drive Bafang motor.

Like the UrbanCross, the GrandTeton sports a Shimano drivetrain, Tektro hydraulic brakes, and is decked out with tech features including a color display and smartphone connectivity. A highlight for both bikes is the torque sensor, providing a natural pedal-assist feel.

Vanpowers has yet to reveal the pricing and availability for these models. However, judging by their current lineup, the UrbanCross and GrandTeton are poised to deliver excellent value, combining cutting-edge technology with rider-centric design. SEC Greenlights Bitcoin ETFs: A Game-Changer for Crypto Investor

The legitimacy of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies has long been a subject of debate. While some countries attempt to regulate and control these digital assets by recognizing them, others ban them due to worries about illegal activities like money laundering and tax evasion. For instance, we recently mentioned that India delisted 10 crypto exchanges, including Binance, from Apple’s App Store. However, if you’re an investor or interested in cryptocurrencies, there’s good news. The United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has approved rule changes, opening the door for Bitcoin ETFs and reaffirming its recognition as an official currency. Here are the details…

Bitcoin ETFs Gain Official Recognition From SEC

In simpler terms, the SEC has allowed the establishment of a Bitcoin investment fund. This makes Bitcoin an officially recognized investment tool, allowing people to invest in it not only through cryptocurrency exchanges but also through traditional ones. Now, individuals, banks, companies basically anyone can invest in cryptocurrency without being tied to crypto exchanges.

Crypto

Of course, this decision took time to finalize. The recent approval of the Bitcoin fund was accidentally revealed on the SEC’s official Twitter account yesterday. Despite the deletion of the tweet and rumors of a hacked account, the decision confirms the accuracy of the shared information. Moreover, the financial industry had been anticipating the SEC’s approval of Bitcoin ETFs, and some attribute the recent surge to $47,000 to this development.

Although this decision could increase Bitcoin’s value, it’s important to highlight that the SEC clearly emphasizes the highly speculative nature of Bitcoin in their approval statement. And they are not wrong. It’s crucial to think carefully before running for “investment opportunity.” Yes, Bitcoin could indeed gain significant value after the decision. However, scenarios like millions of investors who have been waiting for profit for a long time selling billions of dollars worth of Bitcoin could lead you not to wealth but to bankruptcy. Bitcoin ETFs approved by the SEC are as follows:

  • BlackRock
  • Ark Invest
  • Grayscale
  • VanEck
  • Bitwise
  • Fidelity
  • hashdex
  • WisdomTree
  • Invesco Galaxy
  • franklin
  • Valkyrie

India delists 10 crypto exchanges, including Binance, from Apple’s App Store

Apple‘s App Store in India has recently delisted ten crypto exchanges, including prominent ones like Binance and KuCoin, following directives from India’s Ministry of Finance due to non-compliance issues. This action is a part of India’s intensifying regulation of the cryptocurrency sector. The Indian Ministry of Finance’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) accused these exchanges of operating illegally in the country and failing to adhere to anti-money laundering regulations.

India’s Crackdown on Crypto Exchanges for Anti-Money Laundering and Tax Adherence

The FIU’s notification to the exchanges occurred on December 28, 2023, and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology was requested to enforce the block. The FIU mandates that exchanges operating in India must register as reporting entities and comply with income tax filing requirements. Other affected exchanges include Bitget, Huobi, Gate.io, OKX, Kraken, and MEXC.

This move is seen as an effort to enhance compliance with Indian laws, particularly following the imposition of taxes on digital asset incomes in 2022. Indian law requires a 30% tax on crypto holdings and transfers, along with a 1% tax at source for each trade. The crackdown on offshore exchanges aims to create a level playing field, as India continues to advocate for global collaboration in regulating the crypto sector. While local exchanges in India have been subject to stringent requirements, such as Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures, foreign platforms have operated with less scrutiny.

In response to the decision, Binance South Asia reassured existing users that they would not be affected and expressed a commitment to comply with local regulations. Meanwhile, Apple has removed three offshore crypto exchanges from its App Store in India, and there is speculation that similar actions might follow on Google’s Play Store.

The finance ministry emphasizes that both offshore and onshore Virtual Digital Asset service providers in India must register with the Financial Intelligence Unit-India and comply with the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. This compliance includes maintaining detailed KYC information and records of transactions with clients. The government’s stringent stance on crypto regulations, including heavy taxation and compliance mandates, has significantly impacted the trading volumes and operations of crypto exchanges in India.

Realme 12 Pro+ Rolex Edition teased along with potential launch date

Realme is gearing up for the imminent launch of its 12 Pro and 12 Pro+ smartphones. Ahead of the launch, the smartphone brand has started to generate hype by tasing its partnering with a luxury watch company.

Realme 12 Pro Rolex Edition

Leaked images suggest that the brand in question is Rolex, and Realme will be making a custom variant of the Realme 12 Pro+ smartphone featuring blue leather and gold accents on the back. The phone maker initially teased the collaboration, which revealed its partnership with luxury watch designer Ollivier Saveo, using a crown emoji reminiscent of the Rolex logo.

The leaked teaser image also hinted at a significant date, the 28th, on the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust, suggesting a potential launch date of January 28. In addition to the luxury collaboration, the Realme 12 Pro series is anticipated to introduce a periscope camera, as revealed in various teasers. The company has secured certifications from TENAA, SIRIM, Indian BIS, and TDRA websites, setting the stage for the series launch in India in January.

That said, the Realme 12 Pro+ is tipped to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 chipset. The device will likely have a 6.7-inch AMOLED FHD+ 120Hz display with a 16-megapixel camera in the front. As mentioned above, it will feature a periscopic telephoto camera, which is expected to be a 32MP sensor with 2x optical zoom. We can also expect a 50MP primary camera sensor, along with a 5,000mAh battery, 100W fast charging, and up to 16GB RAM onboard the device. More details will likely be confirmed as we get closer to the launch date, so stay tuned.

Nintendo Switch 2’s Lack of Dedicated DLSS Hardware Could Limit Resolution to 1080p

The countdown has begun for Nintendo Switch 2. The company faces a challenging task with the handheld they have been working on for quite some time. This time around, they not only have to compete with PlayStation and Xbox but also contend with alternative rivals like Steam Deck. Furthermore, both performance expectations in games and among gamers are quite high. However, a recent leak suggests that the Japanese game developer may not be too concerned about this situation, as the Switch 2 might lack special hardware to run DLSS. Here are the details…

Resolution Ceiling for Nintendo Switch 2 May Hit 1080p/1440p Without DLA

Unfortunately, we don’t know much about Nintendo Switch 2 yet. However, one thing we do know is that it will incorporate the T239 chipset, which significantly outperforms the Nvidia Tegra X1 and X1+ found in current handhelds. The use of Nvidia technologies is crucial at this point because the issue goes beyond just graphics. Nintendo, aiming to prolong the console’s lifespan, wants to leverage artificial intelligence technologies like DLSS.

However, according to emerging information, the company is avoiding spending money on DLA (Deep Learning Accelerator) that directly influences DLSS performance. For those unfamiliar, DLA, or Deep Learning Accelerator, is a specialized processor designed to help GPUs perform deep learning tasks more efficiently. It is particularly critical for enhancing the performance of DLSS. DLSS renders the game image at a lower resolution and then uses DLA to recreate the image at a higher resolution.

This allows games to be displayed at higher resolutions with higher frame rates. In summary, DLA transforms DLSS into a more efficient and powerful technology, delivering better image quality. Unfortunately, the alleged T234 chip that the company is rumored to use does not support this technology. This directly implies that the handheld will not be able to provide a 4K 60 FPS gaming experience. If the claims are accurate, without DLA, Nintendo Switch 2 will be limited to running games at 1080p or at best 1440p resolution.

Unfortunately, we currently lack more information on this matter. Perhaps the only thing we can do is wait for new leaks and the console expected to be unveiled in the first quarter of 2024.

OtterBox Unveils Eco-Friendly Cactus Leather iPhone Cases at CES 2024

OtterBox, a well-recognized brand for smartphone cases, has recently stepped into a new realm of innovation with its latest product: iPhone cases made from cactus leather. This new line mirrors the feel of traditional leather. These Symmetry Series Cactus Leather Cases maintain the durability and protection synonymous with OtterBox products. They feature a robust design, with reinforced corners for absorbing shocks, a raised edge to safeguard the camera, a screen lip for display protection, and the brand’s renowned DROP+ protection.

Cactus leather production uses way less resources than traditional leather

What sets these cases apart is the use of cactus leather, derived from the nopal or prickly pear cactus. This material choice is a game-changer. Cactus leather production requires notably less land, water, and resources compared to traditional leather methods. Additionally, the harvesting process of mature prickly pear pads is environmentally friendly, as the cactus continues to live and can be re-harvested.

Otterbox Cactus

This innovation was showcased at CES, where MacRumors’ Dan Barbera got a firsthand look. He noted that OtterBox’s cactus leather material offers an improvement over Apple’s FineWoven leather alternative.

Beyond iPhone cases, OtterBox extends its use of cactus leather to Apple Watch bands and a MagSafe wallet, demonstrating versatility and a commitment to sustainable practices.

Priced at $60, these cactus leather cases are set to be available on the OtterBox website from Spring 2024. This launch not only marks a shift in material use for tech accessories but also represents a broader movement in the tech industry towards more environmentally conscious and ethical manufacturing practices.

Foxconn is Diversifying from iPhones to Electric Vehicles

Foxconn, the renowned supplier for Apple, is making a strategic shift by entering the electric vehicle (EV) market. This move, centered in Zhengzhou, China, is a response to the declining demand for smartphones and consumer electronics.

Foxconn is one of the many companies that want to be a part of the EV revolution

In January, Foxconn established a new firm, Foxconn New Energy Automobile Industry Development (Henan) Co, with a focus on electric cars. This initiative is not just about diversifying their portfolio but also about capturing a slice of the burgeoning EV market. The venture will delve into various aspects of car production, including manufacturing components, developing motors, and selling new energy vehicles.

Foxconn India

This move is significant for Foxconn, traditionally known for its role in electronics manufacturing. The Taiwanese giant’s revenue in 2023 showed a decline from the previous year, prompting this pivot towards the automotive sector. The company has already introduced an electric cargo van and plans for a compact SUV, signaling its serious intentions in the EV space.

Interestingly, Foxconn’s move comes at a time when the global smartphone market is stagnating. Their decision to invest in EVs could be a smart play, capitalizing on the growing interest in eco-friendly and sustainable transportation.

Moreover, Foxconn’s investment in the EV sector could have a ripple effect in the industry, potentially leading to innovations in electric vehicle technology and production. Their extensive experience in manufacturing and global supply chains could bring a new perspective and efficiency to the EV market.
