Apple Announces a Temporary Pause on the Sale of Apple Watches in the United States

Apple has announced the temporary halt of sales for its latest smartwatches, the Series 9 and Ultra 2, in the United States. This decision, effective from December 21 on their website and after December 24 in retail locations, arises from a patent dispute concerning the blood oxygen measurement feature of these models. This feature has become a point of contention with Masimo, a medical technology company, claiming that Apple‘s devices infringe upon its patents.

The Apple Watches seemingly violated Masimo’s patent rights

The dispute took a critical turn in October when the US International Trade Commission (ITC) found that Apple’s watches violated Masimo’s patent rights. This finding could potentially lead to a ban on importing these Apple Watch models into the U.S. However, the decision awaits final review by President Joe Biden, with a deadline set for December 25. If the president does not veto this order, the ban will come into effect the following day.

Apple Watch Double Tap NameDrop iOS 17.1

Amidst this legal tussle, Apple’s response has been swift and strategic. The company, while disputing the ITC’s findings and planning to appeal, is preparing for the possibility of the ban being upheld. This preparation involves considering both legal and technical adjustments, including modifications to the algorithms that determine oxygen saturation levels in the blood.

Interestingly, the patent dispute and the subsequent sales pause do not affect all Apple Watch models. The more affordable Apple Watch SE, which lacks the contested blood oxygen sensor, remains available for purchase.

The timing of this development is crucial, as the holiday season in the U.S., typically a peak sales period for Apple, is underway. However, experts like Ryan Reith from IDC believe that Apple’s inventory of other models like the Watch 8 and SE will cushion any immediate sales impact.

This dispute also raises broader questions about the protection of intellectual property and the future of technological innovation in smart devices. As tech giants like Apple continue to push the boundaries of what smartwatches can do, the resolution of such disputes will have significant implications for the industry and consumers alike.

New Genshin Impact Character is Now Public!

In the latest update of Genshin Impact, a popular action role-playing game, the developers are introducing a character who’s stirring excitement and curiosity. Meet Chiori, a new Geo character who’s not just a warrior but also an accomplished fashion designer from Inazuma.

The character, Chiori, has dual identities in the game

Chiori’s dual identity is a fresh concept in the game. Known for designing the outfits of characters like Lyney, Lynette, and Navia, her step into the role of a playable character adds depth to the game’s narrative and character development. This blend of artistic creativity with combat skills offers a new perspective on how game characters can be more than just fighters or mages; they can have diverse and interesting backgrounds.

As a 5-Star Geo Sword character, Chiori is expected to bring new dynamics to the gameplay. There’s speculation that she might serve as a support or healer within the Geo element, a role that has been limited in the game so far. If these predictions hold true, Chiori could offer players more strategies and team compositions, especially for those who favor the Geo element.

The introduction of Chiori is timed with the game’s narrative expansion into Fontaine. This shift promises to bring a fresh storyline and new adventures, featuring other characters like the Kamisato siblings and Yoimiya. For players, this means not just a new character to explore but also new stories and quests, enhancing the overall gaming experience.

Chiori’s arrival in “Genshin Impact” represents the game’s continuous evolution and its commitment to creating a rich, diverse world. Her unique background as a fashion designer turned fighter is a testament to the game’s creative storytelling and character design. It shows that in the world of gaming, characters can have layered personalities and talents, making the player’s experience more engaging and immersive. Whether it’s through her design skills, her story, or her combat abilities, Chiori is set to make a significant impact on the game’s landscape.

Mercedes-Benz’s New Electric C-Class was Spotted in the Wild while Testing

The race in the electric vehicle (EV) market is heating up, and Mercedes-Benz is not staying behind. The company has big plans to switch entirely to electric cars by 2030, depending on how the market grows. A key player in this electric dream is the new electric C-Class, set to launch in 2025, and it’s Mercedes‘ answer to the BMW i4.

The Mercedes Electric C-Class is leaning towards a more refined design

The electric C-Class was recently caught on camera while being tested. It was all covered up to keep its final look a secret. But even with the camouflage, we can guess that Mercedes is going for a sleeker look compared to its bigger models like the EQE and EQS. It seems to be leaning towards a more sharp and refined design, maybe taking some cues from the Vision EQXX concept car in terms of aerodynamics.

Mercedes

This new electric sedan is expected to be built on Mercedes’ exclusive electric vehicle platform called MB.EA. This is different from the electric CLA models that are being developed on a mixed-use platform (MMA), which also supports traditional combustion engines. This shows how Mercedes is trying to cater to different tastes and needs in the EV market.

There’s also buzz about Mercedes possibly changing the way they name their EVs. Starting from 2024, they might move away from the “EQ” branding. This change might start with the electric version of the G-Class. It’s a sign that Mercedes is entering a new era in their EV journey.

As Mercedes gears up to launch the electric C-Class, it’s not just about their own evolution. They are going head-to-head with BMW‘s upcoming vehicles like the i3 Sedan and the next-gen iX3, both expected to be built on the innovative Neue Klasse platform. This competition highlights just how dynamic and fast-changing the world of luxury EVs is. With its expected modern design and cutting-edge technology, it’s ready to make a mark in the rapidly evolving world of electric cars.

Guangdong’s Bold $1.5 Billion Strategy Showcases China’s Quest for Chip Independence

In a strategic move to bolster its semiconductor industry, China’s Guangdong province has recently established an impressive $1.5 billion chip fund. This initiative marks a significant step in China’s journey towards semiconductor self-reliance, a goal that has gained urgency in light of the escalating export restrictions from the US.

The Chip fund is intended to support the developing semiconductor industry

The Guangdong Semiconductor and Integrated Circuit Industry Equity Investment Fund, now in its second phase, reflects China‘s determination to support its chip industry amid international pressures. With Guangdong’s provincial government and two municipal government funds at the helm, this endeavor is a clear signal of China’s commitment to technological independence.

China chip

This move is not isolated. Similar efforts are underway across China, including Shanghai‘s semiconductor investment fund established in 2016. These regional strategies align with Beijing’s broader goals, underscoring a national consensus on the importance of the semiconductor sector.

Interestingly, the US has adopted a similar strategy with its 2022 Chips and Science Act, demonstrating a global recognition of the strategic importance of the semiconductor industry. The act promises subsidies for chip projects, indicating a global race towards semiconductor prowess.

The Guangdong fund follows its successful first phase initiated in December 2020. The current phase is primarily financed by Guangdong Yuecai Holdings, highlighting the role of local government in driving technological advances. The fund is a local counterpart to China’s National Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund, also known as the Big Fund, which has been pivotal in the country’s semiconductor progress despite challenges.

China’s approach to semiconductor development is comprehensive, involving both state and private sectors. This “whole-nation” strategy is not just about advancing technology; it’s a response to intensified US trade sanctions. Recent US export control rules have only added urgency to China’s endeavors. The path to self-reliance in semiconductors is not short, but China is showing determination. As the industry evolves, the implications of these developments on global technology and trade dynamics will be profound and far-reaching.
