Volkswagen Unveils ID.7 Electric Sedan in Europe

With the world on a relentless march towards sustainable transportation, Volkswagen makes a bold move by opening pre-orders for its ID.7 all-electric sedan in Europe. Previously, it was reported that the company is working on the soon-to-be-unveiled car. What sets this sedan apart is not just its sleek design but a blend of advanced technology and intuitive features.

The EV has a range of 386 miles on a single charge, which is quite impressive

At a price of 56,995 euros ($61,650), the ID.7 Pro is notably pricier than its direct competitor, the Tesla Model 3. But Volkswagen has made sure to add value to justify the cost. Augmented reality head-up displays and the “Discover Pro Max” navigation system come standard, signaling a leap in driving experience.

Safety has also been given utmost priority with a suite of assist systems like Lane Assist, Emergency Assist, and Rear Traffic Alert. The ID.7 Pro’s Area View 360-degree camera system emphasizes the car’s commitment to providing a seamless and secure ride.

The vehicle’s power is derived from a 77-kilowatt-hour battery, giving it a punch of 282 horsepower and a substantial range of 386 miles on the WLTP Combined cycle. It’s more than a car; it’s a statement of efficiency.

Customers looking to personalize their ID.7 have various options, such as the Interior and Exterior packages. Features like LED matrix headlights and sensor-controlled luggage compartment opening add to its appeal, reflecting a user-centric approach.

The new ID.7 represents Volkswagen’s vision for the future, combining luxury, convenience, and innovative technology. The automaker’s board member for sales, marketing, and after sales, Imelda Labbé, believes it sets “the new benchmark for all-electric premium models at Volkswagen. The European and Chinese market will witness the sedan this fall, with North America following suit in 2024.

In a world striving to embrace greener solutions, the ID.7 stands as a symbol of what’s possible in automotive ingenuity. Volkswagen has, indeed, raised the bar.

Lotus Unveils the Type 133 Electric Sedan with 400 Miles of Range

Electric Vehicles are still a growing occurrence in the market. After a dismal 2022 with only 576 cars sold, Lotus appears to be turning the tide. In a surprising comeback, the British car manufacturer has garnered 17,000 pre-orders for its Emira sports car and Eletre SUV in the first six months of 2023. What seems to be driving this resurgence is Lotus’s unwavering focus on the burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) market. The company has made it clear that the Emira will be its last gas vehicle, and their eyes are now firmly set on an electric future.

The Lotus Type 133 has a 400-mile range, thanks to the 112 kilowatt-hour-battery pack

In the pipeline is the Lotus Type 133, an internally named all-electric sedan expected to join the electric lineup. Though its official name is yet to be revealed, the design cues and features are already becoming apparent. Spy photos of the Type 133 indicate a sleek four-door design, aligned more with Tesla Model S than the low-slung Porsche Taycan. Features such as ultra-slim split headlight fixtures and rear light bar, unique to the sedan, have caught the attention of enthusiasts. The aerodynamic build with rear-wheel diffusers and buttressed front fenders seems to further emphasize the commitment to efficiency and performance.

Source: Wiki

Under the hood, the Type 133 is expected to boast impressive specifications, with a matching 112.0-kilowatt-hour battery pack as the Eletre, potentially providing up to 400 miles of range. High-end performance versions might even compete with the Porsche Taycan Turbo S and Tesla Model S Plaid, delivering north of 900 horsepower.

One interesting tidbit is the speculation around the sedan’s name. Traditionally following an “E” nomenclature, Lotus might continue this trend or potentially break away, with some even suggesting a throwback to the early 1960s with a name like “Cortina.”

Set to be revealed before the year’s end and likely going on sale in the summer of 2024, the Type 133 appears to be part of a broader strategy that could make electric vehicles more accessible, with a base price estimated under $90,000.

In a nutshell, Lotus’s unexpected rebound in 2023, underscored by a strategic shift towards electric vehicles, marks a significant milestone for the company. The forthcoming Type 133 sedan embodies this new direction and could well be a bellwether for the brand’s future in a world increasingly leaning towards electric mobility.

Taking a Deeper Look into the Discord Data Breach from March

In a series of unfortunate incidents, two separate data breaches involving Discord and Discord.io have left users concerned and authorities alert. Considering it’s a widely used platform, people have been genuinely concerned regarding this platform.

The incident has sparked a discussion around Discord’s Security Practices

  1. The Discord Breach: A recent notification has revealed that a data breach that occurred in March affected 180 users of the popular communication server, Discord. The compromised data included sensitive information such as driver’s license numbers. The company has reached out to the impacted users, offering credit monitoring and identity theft protection services. This follows the public acknowledgment of the breach in May.
  2. The Discord.io Incident: Discord.io, a website that allowed users to make custom links for their channels, fell victim to a significant breach on August 14. The vulnerability in the website’s code allowed a third-party attacker to steal hashed passwords, billing information, and Discord IDs. The aftermath led to the temporary shutdown of the site, along with promises of a total rewrite of code and an overhaul of security practices.

These breaches are distinct and involve different entities. Discord is not affiliated with Discord.io, and the company has made this clear, stating, “We do not share any user information with Discord.io directly and we do not have access to or control of information in Discord.io’s custody.”

Discord

Here are the key takeaways:

  • User Impact: While the breach affects a small number of users, the Discord.io breach’s more extensive reach is a cause for concern. Both incidents have sparked dialogues around data protection and security.
  • Security Enhancements: Both the real original and Discord.io are taking measures to ensure user privacy. Discord encourages users to enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) to protect their accounts.
  • A Reminder of Online Vulnerability: These incidents underscore the ever-present risks in the digital landscape. Users must remain vigilant and proactive in securing their online accounts.

The situation is a stark reminder of the complexities of online data security. As both Discord and Discord.io navigate the aftermath, users and businesses alike must consider their digital responsibilities and safeguards. It’s not just a story of two breaches; it’s a lesson in digital accountability.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra
Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

Samsung has been offering a curved-edge display on its Ultra-branded flagships, but the new leak reveals that the South Korean tech giant may opt for a flat screen on the S24 Ultra. There could be a couple of reasons behind it.

Firstly, a flat screen would offer an experience for S Pen users, particularly along the screen’s edges. This adjustment has been a longstanding request from enthusiasts of the S Pen. Additionally, the adoption of a flat screen opens up the possibility of using more affordable and efficient screen protection solutions, catering to the practical needs of users.

The tipster also revealed the dimensions of the S24 Ultra. With measurements of 162.3 x 79 x 8.6mm, it will not only be wider, but also shorter and slimmer than the S23 Ultra. To recall, the predecessor model measures 163.4 x 78.1 x 8.9mm. It is advisable to wait for further reports to know whether the company is really decided for a new design on the S24 Ultra.

Speaking of design, recent reports have claimed that it will be a durable device featuring a titanium alloy frame. Depending on the market, it is expected to release in Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Exynos 2400 chipset variants. Its screen may support up to 2,200 nits of brightness.

It is expected to come with a 200-megapixel (main, with OIS) + 12-megapixel (ultra-wide) + 10-megapixel (persicope) + 50-megapixel (telephoto) quad-camera system and a 12-megapixel front-facing camera. It may come with 12 GB / 16 GB of RAM and up to 1 TB of storage. It may pack a 5,000mAh battery with 45W charging support.

Samsung Galaxy Smart Tag 2 renders emerge, October launch expected

New details of the rumored Samsung Galaxy Smart Tag 2 have surfaced. The device, which recently passed through regulatory bodies like the Bluetooth SIG, the FCC, and Thailand’s NBTC, appears to be on the brink of its official launch, with speculations suggesting an October release.

Samsung Galaxy Smart Tag 2’s new images

While an exact launch date remains is not known yet, UK retailer MobileFun has provided insights that it will debut soon. Leaked official-looking renders released by the UK retailer showcase the Smart Tag 2 in two sleek color options, such as black and white. These color variants have been listed with respective part numbers, such as EI-T5600BBEGEU and EI-T5600BWEGEU. These images align with earlier leaks, confirming that the device has undergone a complete redesign compared to its predecessor.

Rumors suggest that the South Korean tech giant has taken a bold step forward by integrating ultra-wideband (UWB) support into the Smart Tag 2 by default. This technology could enhance location accuracy and enable seamless integration with the Android Find My Device network, catering to a broader user base. Notably, unlike its predecessor, every Galaxy SmartTag 2 is expected to feature both Bluetooth and UWB connectivity, erasing the need for split variants.

MobileFun lists pre-order pricing for individual Smart Tag 2 units at £42.99 (~$54). However, it may not be as per Samsung’s official pricing strategy, which is expected to vary from region to region. For context, the original SmartTag entered the market with a price tag of $29.99 in the US.

What sets the Smart Tag 2 apart is its potential to revolutionize personal item tracking. By leveraging the SmartThings Find app, users can attach the device to belongings and monitor their whereabouts in real-time. The device’s redesigned form factor not only improves its utility but could also pave the way for third-party accessory manufacturers to explore creative attachments and enhancements.

The Smart Tag 2 is expected to have the ability to create virtual perimeters. Users can designate safe zones, receiving notifications on their mobile devices whenever the SmartTag 2 ventures beyond these boundaries. This functionality adds an extra layer of security for users looking to keep their valuables within a specific area.

With the leaked information pointing towards an October launch, it’s possible that this unveiling could coincide with other Samsung releases, such as the Galaxy Tab S9 FE series and the Galaxy S23 FE.

Apple Plans to Make India the ‘iPhone Factory of the World’

The Covid-19 pandemic changed the world in a very different ways. Even though the immediate impact is mostly gone today, it has greatly changed our habits. For example, working from home used to be rare, but now it’s very popular. I’m even writing this from my living room. But these changes haven’t just affected everyday people.

The pandemic also hit China, the center of the outbreak, causing production problems. Many companies have decided to move some of their manufacturing to other countries to avoid future issues. Apple is one of those companies, and it has invested a lot in India. According to recent news, Apple wants to do even more in India. They are planning to increase the making of parts within the country. Here are the details..

Apple to Scale Up Domestic Component Manufacturing in India

According to the Moneycontrol’s report, Apple is looking to scale up its domestic component manufacturing in India. The iPhone maker has shared the details of its plans in a meeting with top finance ministry officials. The official said that Apple is interested in increasing its domestic component base and is actively looking at ways to do so.

Apple iPhone India

The meeting focused on better understanding the supply chain and how to indigenize more of the manufacturing process. The overall growth of the smartphone manufacturing industry in India was also reviewed. The government is not receptive to providing any tax incentives to Apple, but the company is still interested in investing in India. The official said that Apple wants to “indigenise faster” and is “eager to increase the domestic component manufacturing base in India.”

This move is likely part of Apple’s broader strategy to diversify its supply chains beyond China. A major chunk of Apple’s suppliers are based in China, and the company has been looking to reduce its reliance on the country in recent years. Apple has been manufacturing iPhones in India since 2017. The company currently makes about 7% of its iPhones in India, and it is expected to increase that number in the coming years.

Apple

Apple’s plans to scale up domestic component manufacturing in India are a positive development for the country’s electronics industry. The government’s PLI scheme has already attracted significant investment from smartphone manufacturers, and Apple’s move is likely to further boost the industry. The increased manufacturing activity is expected to create jobs and boost the economy. It will also help India to become a more self-reliant country in terms of electronics manufacturing.

US Chip Export Controls Could Cost Nvidia Billions in China Revenue

The trade war between the US and China is still going on. Both countries are working to control trade around the world and gain an economic edge over each other. Unfortunately, this is also causing problems in the tech industry. For example, Huawei got hit with US sanctions because of this tension and lost a lot of its share in the global smartphone market. Now, Nvidia faces a similar risk. The company has warned that it could lose a “permanent” business opportunity in China if the US government tightens export controls on chips. Here are the details…

Nvidia Sees ‘Permanent Loss’ of Business Opportunity in China if US Tightens Chip Export Controls

Nvidia has warned that it could lose a “permanent” business opportunity in China if the US government tightens export controls on chips. The company said that it is already prohibited from exporting its high-end artificial intelligence chips to China, but that it could also be prevented from selling less powerful chips that are used in data centers and other applications.

Nvidia USA vs China

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said that the company has “strong demand” for its products worldwide, but that the loss of the Chinese market would be a “major setback” for its business. “If we are not able to sell our products in China, it will be a permanent loss of opportunity for us,” Huang said. “China is a major market for our products, and it is important for us to be able to compete there.”

The US government is considering tightening chip export controls to China in an effort to prevent the country from developing its own advanced chip industry. The Biden administration has said that the measures are necessary to protect national security, but critics have argued that they could harm the US economy and hurt American companies that do business in China.

Nvidia is not the only US company that is concerned about the potential loss of business in China. Other companies that could be affected include Intel, Qualcomm, and Apple. The US government is expected to make a decision on whether to tighten chip export controls to China in the coming weeks. The outcome of the decision could have a significant impact on the global chip industry.

Motorola’s new phone module supports two-way satellite calling and text messaging

Satellite connectivity is the new hot feature in modern smartphones. So far, only Apple and Huawei have mainstream phones with this type of connectivity. Motorola has a niche-focused Defy 2 with satellite communication support. The Lenovo-owned company also offers Defy Link, a satellite-enabled messenger. Now, the company is gearing up to bring a new phone module with support for two-way satellite calling and text messaging.

Motorolaannounced it will release a Tiantong satellite phone module tomorrow. The module will support two-way satellite phone calls and text messaging. With a single click, users will be able to make a satellite phone call using their phone. The name suggests the satellite connectivity will be provided by Tiantong-1— China’s space-based information infrastructure and the country’s answer to the Inmarsat network.

Motorola Satellite phone module

It is worth mentioning Huawei’s Mate 60 series will also use the same satellite network for its communication feature.

Motorola confirmed the satellite phone module will be launched tomorrow. It’s safe to say the accessory will be unveiled only in China for now. The company didn’t immediately reveal which smartphone will be paired with the upcoming module or if it will be designed for multiple Motorola phones. The pricing details are also anyone’s guess at the moment.

Kingdom Eighties will be playable on Android and iPhones starting this fall

Kingdom Eighties is a single-player action tower defense game developed by Raw Fury. The video game was launched for PC in June and now the developer might have confirmed its arrival on Android and iPhones.

At Gamescom 2023, Raw Fury confirmed to Android Police that Kingdom Eighties is coming to Android and iOS this fall, likely in October. Gordon Van Dyke, Kingdom franchise creative director and co-founder of Raw Fury, even showed the outlet a working prototype of Kingdom Eighties running on an iPhone 14. He assured that the game would offer the same features and capabilities on Android, iOS, and desktop platforms.

Android Police notes the gameplay on mobile is similar to the desktop version, but there’s no co-op mode. Gordon Van Dyke told the publication that Including a co-op mode would have meant doing more design work, which could have made it tricky to finish the first story-driven installment of Kingdom. As a result, it was decided to omit the mode from the mobile version.

However, Survival Mixtape Mode, a recently announced feature for the desktop version of the game, will be available on mobile right from launch. After completing the campaign, players can revisit previously explored locations and challenge themselves to survive as long as possible against time. The mode includes a three-tiered high-score system to track the player’s progress.

To give you an idea, Kingdom Eighties serves as an expansion to the Kingdom series, inviting players to get back into a world of intricate micro-management and base construction. As the developers explain, the goal in the latest installment is to protect your town from the relentless Greed while also unraveling the mysteries surrounding your family’s heritage.

Currently, the Kingdom Eighties is available on PC. It can also be played on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X, and Nintendo Switch.

Samsung rumored to launch a rollable screen smartphone in 2025

Popular tipster Revegnus (@Tech_Reve) recently revealed that Samsung will begin mass production of rollable screen smartphones by 2025, setting the stage for a revolutionary shift in smartphone design and functionality. The upcoming phones are touted to showcase advanced Under Panel Camera (UPC) technology and a cutting-edge bezel-less design.

From foldables to rollables: Samsung eyes 2025

This recent revelation aligns with Samsung’s prior showcases of their innovative screen technologies. At the 2022 K-Display event, Samsung turned heads by unveiling prototype models of rollable screens, foldable tablets, and intriguingly named products like “Flex G” and “Flex S.” Given their track record, Samsung’s foray into rollable screen smartphones isn’t wholly unexpected.

Another testament to their dedication to flexible displays came at the 2023 SID Display Week in the U.S., where Samsung Display presented a 12.4-inch flexible rollable OLED panel. This panel captivated attendees by stretching from a compact 49 millimeters to an impressive 254.4 millimeters, offering a transformative 5-fold magnification.

Samsung flexible display

The buzz around the anticipated borderless design also stirs significant interest. Korean media giant, The Elec, has previously reported collaborations between Samsung, LG, and Apple, targeting the development of OLED displays without any front-facing borders. The vision? Achieve a display with zero border width, providing users with an immersive and uninterrupted visual experience.

Apple has also submitted a patent for a device incorporating a rollable or scrollable display, indicating potential integration into future products like iPhones, iPads, and Macbooks. According to a past report, Apple is working to launch a foldable screen MacBook in 2026.

Meeting such ambitious design goals necessitates further advancements in display technology. Both Samsung Display and LG Display are on a mission to refine the Thin Film Encapsulation (TFE) and Under Panel Camera (UPC) technologies.

However, they also face the challenge of ensuring adequate antenna space in these futuristic designs. As these tech giants grapple with these technological nuances, the industry and consumers eagerly await a new era of smartphone innovation.
