Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Plus CAD renders emerge to reveal design from all angles

Samsung is reportedly working on the Galaxy Tab S9 series of flagship tablets. Reports have claimed that the Tab S9 family may debut alongside the Galaxy Fold 5 and Flip 5 in August this year. A couple of months before the expected launch, reliable tipster OnLeaks has teamed with Woloftablet to share the CAD renders of the upcoming Galaxy Tab S9 Plus. The new renders give a good look at the tablet’s design from all angles.

The design of the Galaxy Tab S9 Plus is not different from that of its predecessor. One noticeable change is that there are now separate camera units on the back. This is a design style that Samsung used on the Galaxy S23 series and the most recent A-series phones.

The Galaxy Tab S8 Plus has dimensions of 285 x 185 x 5.7mm. The new leak reveals that the Galaxy Tab S9 Plus measures 285.4 x 185.4 x 5.64mm. Hence, the Tab S9+ will not offer a visual improvement in terms of design as compared to its predecessor.

The CAD renders show that the Galaxy Tab S9 Plus has a single camera on the front and is equipped with an under-display fingerprint scanner. The device will continue to feature quad speakers and carry support for the S Pen stylus.

A recent report claimed that the Galaxy Tab S9 lineup will also include two other models, the Galaxy Tab S9 and the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra. All three models are said to offer IP67-rated water and dust resistance. The Tab S9 series is said to be powered by the custom version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which also powers the Galaxy S23 series.

After US, EU is now taking precautions against Chinese technology and trade

The European Union is reportedly making plans to introduce new laws to address the potential dangers of Chinese technology. One proposal being considered is the implementation of a screening process for investments going out of the EU that specifically target China. Additionally, the EU is looking at developing a coordinated response to address any risks associated with Beijing’s use of technology. The scope of the proposed laws is intended to go beyond current restrictions, bans, and investigations focused on apps such as TikTok.

source: Ursula VON DER LEYEN (President of the European Commission) at the EURO Summit

Last week Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission said that it is important for the EU to be ready to establish protective measures against the potential exploitation of trade and investment by China.

She further emphasized that preventing China from acquiring “sensitive technologies” that can be utilized to suppress human rights or impose security restrictions is crucial and China’s evolving policies may necessitate the creation of new protective measures for key sectors. In cases where dual-use purposes cannot be ruled out or there are concerns about human rights, there must be a distinct demarcation regarding whether exports or investments align with the EU’s security interests.

These statements come right after the ban of the Chinese app Tiktok. Back in February, TikTok was banned by the European Commission and the EU Council on staff phones. This followed in the footsteps of the US federal government and over 25 states who had already prohibited the use of TikTok on official work devices. Canada, Belgium, and Britain have also implemented similar measures.

Though the EU has only banned TikTook from staff phones, it is planning to concentrate its defenses on safeguarding other “sensitive high-tech areas” such as microelectronics, robotics, quantum computing, biotech, and artificial intelligence.

Von der Leyen emphasized the importance of preventing EU companies’ knowledge, expertise, and resources from being used to strengthen the military and intelligence capabilities of systemic rivals. She called for a review of any potential gaps in the EU’s existing toolbox that may enable the leak of sensitive technologies through investments in other nations. The focus, according to von der Leyen, should be on emerging technologies that have the potential to develop military capabilities and pose a risk to national security.

Huawei Health App Removed from Google Play Store

Huawei Health is a health-tracking app that offers features similar to Samsung Health app. By connecting it to a Huawei wearable, users can track and manage their fitness and health-related activities, such as step counting, heart rate monitoring, sleep tracking, and more. However, for reasons unknown to us, the Huawei Health app is no longer available in the Google Play Store. Here are the details.

If you’re someone who relies on Huawei Health to track your fitness and health activities, this news may disappoint you. However, it makes sense for Google to delist the app as its last version from 2020 and it didn’t have support for Huawei’s latest wearables, like the Band 7. In case, you want to install the application on your device, you’re left with two options—sideload it through untrusted sources or get the Huawei App Gallery first and install it from there.

Huawei health app

Notably, the application is still available in Apple’s App Store and Samsung’s Galaxy Store. To remind you, Huawei Health can be paired with Huawei wearables, including smartwatches and fitness trackers, to provide detailed insights about a user’s health and fitness data.

Currently, it is unclear why Huawei Health has been removed from the Google Play Store. This could be due to a range of reasons, from technical issues to Huawei’s failure in updating the app to newer Android APIs. However, if you already have the app installed on your device, you should still be able to use it as normal, but it may not receive updates or bug fixes in the future.

Meizu might have a Clamshell Foldable smartphone in the works

Most people still use slab smartphones, but there’s been a lot of hype surrounding folding smartphones lately. It’s evident as more and more brands have started to foray into this unconventional smartphone category. We’ve recently seen Tecno take a shot at it, and now it seems Meizu is set to join the fray soon with an upcoming clamshell foldable.

Meizu’s plans to launch a foldable smartphone are no secret as the brand’s vice president already confirmed the same recently. He said the company will launch its first foldable by the end of this year. While no further details about the product have been disclosed, a patent showcases a Meizu smartphone with a clamshell design.

Meizu Foldable

As you can see in the image above, the foldable features a clamshell design that looks quite similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip phones. According to the patent’s abstract, the hinge mechanism of the device is designed to make it easy to open and close the smartphone efficiently. Interestingly, it seems that Meizu has managed to reduce the gap between the two halves of the phone when it’s closed, which could indicate that the company has come up with an improved hinge design.

Meizu is a seasoned smartphone brand that has been in the business since January 2007. While it was once a major player in China, the company has since lost ground to competitors like Xiaomi and Oppo. However, the brand has plans to stage a comeback and hopes to secure a place in the top 5 within the next three years. Meizu’s latest flagship series, the Meizu 20, appears to be a promising product that could serve as a springboard for the brand, but it’s clear that the road ahead will be challenging.

Leaked renders show the Galaxy Z Flip 5 with a larger cover screen

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 4 is a brilliant clamshell foldable but unlike its competitors, the smartphone comes with a smaller outer screen with limited functions. It can be used to see your current notifications, battery percentage, date, and time, but not a whole lot more. However, it seems the Korean company is planning on upsizing the cover display with the Galaxy Z Flip 5. Some leaked renders show evidence for the same.

A design render shared by Sammobile suggests Samsung is going to do some major changes on its upcoming clamshell foldable. As you can see in the image, the cover screen for the Galaxy Z Flip 5 appears to be quite a bit larger compared to previous models. It can be seen taking up most of the space on the front outer display and is definitely larger than what Oppo offers on the latest Find N2 Flip.

Galaxy-Z-Flip-5-cover-display-mockup

While it is unclear how Samsung will utilize a larger cover screen, we can expect it to offer far more functions than its predecessor. It is possible that the brand might allow full-fledged Android apps to be used on the outer display, especially since numerous third-party developers are already doing so. It may also include support for timers, the camera, and weather forecast.

Although the exact dimensions of the cover screen are not disclosed, sources tell Sammobile that it will fall within the range of 3 to 4 inches. Nevertheless, based on the measurements of the Galaxy Z Flip 4, the publication anticipates that it will most likely be closer to the lower end of that range.

Huawei Chairman says the US sanctions will benefit China’s chip industry

Huawei has claimed that the sustained US sanction regime that almost crippled it will ultimately benefit the Chinese chip industry. Huawei had come under a raft of sanctions by the United States government during the Donald Trump presidency. The sanctions regime has however continued with the Joe Biden administration. Huawei’s Chairman, Eric Xu, says that China’s chip industry will have a rebirth.

Huawei

Huawei lost its leading global position in the smartphone and telecommunications hardware market as a result of the US sanctions. The company also lost access to Google Play services, in addition to its inability to access US chip vendors. It has however risen stoutly to the debilitating challenges, developing its in-house operating system HarmonyOS and navigating expertly over the chip challenge. Huawei had the credible prospect of becoming the world’s number-one smartphone manufacturer before the sanctions hit it hard.

China is not allowed to purchase extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines for producing modern chips. Although SMIC is still developing its capability in China, Xu believes the future is bright for China-made chips. Such sanctions have expectedly pushed China into action, but it is unclear how long before it turns the corner.

Huawei reported a 69% dip in revenue in 2022, which was its biggest decline since 2011. Xu puts Huawei’s revenue setbacks as a result of a challenging external environment and non-market factors. The CEO however says Huawei has continued to forge ahead, doing everything to maintain business continuity and serve its customers.

Huawei hopes to benefit massively from China’s growth in chip-making capacity. This could help to further position the brand in its quest to rise to its pre-eminent position before the US sanctions kicked in in 2020.

Samsung plans chip packaging test line in Japan, move seeks to deepen connections

Samsung is apparently planning on setting up a new chip packaging test line in Japan. The move from the company is likely a way to deepen its cooperation in the region. The news arrives from five sources close to the matter.

The five people added that the South Korean tech giant is looking to boost its advanced packaging operation whilst building stronger connections with the semiconductor equipment and materials maker in Japan. Furthermore, it would also be the first such test line in the Asian country for Samsung, which is also the world’s largest memory chips manufacturer. This news also arrives as the United States seeks to work together with its allies to counter China’s advancements in semiconductor technology.

Back on Friday, Japan said that it would restrict exports of 23 types of chip making tools, which aligns its technology trade controls with the US’ effort to stop China from building advanced chips. The tech giant is also looking to establish the facility in the Kanagawa prefecture that is near Tokyo. Interestingly, this is also where Samsung has a research and development center.

Unfortunately, finer details regarding the matter like the timeline and investment are still unclear. Although, the total investment would likely be in tens of billions of yens or near 75 million US Dollars. The brand is looking to deepen its relations with the Japanese companies, while also looking at the region for its relatively low labor cost and presence of these chip equipment makers. Simply put, the region offers Samsung access to a local “ecosystem”, as per one of the sources.
