OPPO patents a cutting edge Dual-sided phone with a Wrap-around display

When it comes to smartphone innovation, OPPO has been at the forefront with a bunch of new introductions and patents from the Chinese brand. And the patents and announcements don’t seem to stop. We have already seen OPPO X 2021, OPPO rollable concept phone, and now, the company has filed a new patent for a dual-sided smartphone with a Wrap-Around display.

Oppo files a Patent for its Dual-sided Phone with Wrap-around display

OPPO has filed a patent with the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) with documentation called ‘Method for assembling and disassembling electronic equipment’. It elaborates on the assembling and disassembling methods of such dual-sided flexible screens.

A quick look at the patent, and we can see the schematics of the phone, with thin bezels and sharp corners. The schematics do give us an idea of how it might look, but the concept images shared by LetsGoDigital give us a better idea of how the design would look when materialized.

Jermaine Smit, the guy behind Concept Creator has collaborated with the folks at LetsGoDigital. The concept renders by him looks very interesting. As mentioned earlier, the device has super-thin bezels and the left side has the display flowing towards the back. Although the display is extended and wrapped around it isn’t curved, rather it is sharp and has a cutting edge design.Oppo Patent Dual-sided Phone with Wrap-around display 2

OPPO is said to be using an ultra-thin steel plate between the display and the frame which allows them to place relatively thin screens.

Moving to the rear, the renders show the rear camera setup. It has four sensors and an LED flash beneath the lenses. As it is a full-screen phone with a display wrapped around it, we can say that the rear camera can be used as a selfie sensor by looking at the extended display as a viewfinder.

With only the screen on one side, the volume rockers have been placed on the very right edge if you have a look at the phone from the front.

Other than this, we have also seen something similar from Huawei in the past. The Chinese smartphone giant had patented a dual-sided phone with a similar wrap-around display back in 2020. The one major difference in Huawei’s patent was it had curved edges instead of sharp ones like this OPPO patent. In case you missed it, we’ve already seen a device in real life with a wrap-around display — the Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha

As it is just in the patent stage, we have to wait and see if this design materializes into a real smartphone in the coming years.

Apple Beats Studio Buds are powered by MediaTek chipset instead of Apple H1

A few days ago, Apple launched the Beats Studio Buds true wireless earphones, which are very different in terms of design and features when compared to the brand’s Beats Powerbeats Pro launched in 2019.

Now a report from Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at Tianfeng International says that the newly released Beats Studio Buds are powered by MediaTek’s TWS chip manufactured using the 22nm process instead of the Apple H1 chip made on 16nm process.

Beats Studio Buds featured

It is believed that the reason behind using MediaTek chipset and not the company’s own semiconductor product is better compatibility with Android devices as the US-based tech giant is now focusing on Android users as well to increase its market share in the true wireless earphones category.

Another reason for the tech giant to use MediaTek chipset could be shortened development timelines, more flexible and competitive strategies, reduced costs, and differentiation from the AirPods series.

Given that Apple is now using MediaTek’s chipset in its TWS offerings, the Taiwanese company will now be able to push the product to other companies as well, helping MediaTek boost its sales in the TWS chips segment.

Further, the report talks about the market share of wearables. It adds that although Apple remains the market leader in this category, its market share is declining. Due to lower-than-expected demand for AirPods in Q2 2021, the forecast of shipments was revised down to approximately 70-75 million units instead of around 85 million units.

Microsoft clarifies Minimum System requirements for Windows 11, Removes PC Health Check tool

Microsoft officially released the first Insider Preview build of Windows 11 yesterday. While the build was rolled out, the company has clarified on the minimum requirements of the new Windows 11 software.

Microsoft windows 11

According to a blog post from Microsoft, the PC health check tool has caused confusion regarding the compatibility of the software. Consequently, the PC Health Check App has been taken down after negative feedback from those trying to install the software on their powerful rigs. The tool failed to clarify the exact reason for the incompatibility of the software and for showing incompetent results.

“The intention of today’s post is to acknowledge and clarify the confusion caused by our PC Health Check tool, share more details as to why we updated the system requirements for Windows 11, and set the path for how we will learn and adjust”, the post stated.

Although the post is shared to shed some light on the updated minimum requirements of Windows 11, it does not have a definitive answer for the same. What we learn is that Microsoft is paving paths for those with Intel 7th gen chips. The new software could also support AMD’s Zen-1 processors. Let’s look at the updated requirements further in this article.

As of now, Windows 11 is not supported for old-gen chips and those with new-gen processors didn’t tick the PC Health app’s compatibility list. Well, it doesn’t mean that your powerful system doesn’t support the software. It’s just that Microsoft’s app does need some workarounds.

Nonetheless, Windows 11 currently supports chipsets with 2 or more cores having 1 GHz or faster speed. In order to run Windows 11, the system needs at least 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. It runs on TPM version 2.0 and supports DirectX 12.

“Using the principles above, we are confident that devices running on Intel 8th generation processors and AMD Zen 2, as well as Qualcomm 7 and 8 Series, will meet our principles around security and reliability and minimum system requirements for Windows 11”, the post continued.

Furthermore, the post also confirmed that Microsoft will be testing the compatibility for Intel’s 7th generation and AMD’s first generation processors. With this, we can expect the aforementioned chips to be compatible with the new Windows 11 in the future.

Design

Despite it is the vanilla version, the Realme Narzo 30 5G has a more attractive design. With that stripe on the left, it looks very futuristic and original while offering a thinner body than the Realme Narzo 30 Pro 5G, even though it has the same battery capacity. The vanilla Narzo 30 5G is even lighter than its Pro variant, and this makes it even more attractive when it comes to aesthetics. Both the phones have narrow bezels, a punch-hole design, and a side-mounted fingerprint reader, as well as a rectangle-shaped camera module and a polycarbonate body.

Display

Realme Narzo 30 5G and Narzo 30 Pro 5G are equipped with exactly the same display. It is an IPS panel with a 90 Hz refresh rate, a diagonal of 6.5 inches, a 480 nits typical brightness, and a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels. We are not talking about a high-end panel and neither a great midrange panel, but it is sufficient for every kind of user for both detail and image quality. Further, its good refresh rate will please gamers and those who want a smoother viewing experience. Given that it is an IPS panel, it does not provide the deepest colors and it does not integrate a fingerprint reader. It is an average panel like the ones you can often find on a lower-midrange phone.

Specs & Software

The Realme Narzo 30 Pro 5G is able to provide superior performance to the vanilla Nazro 30 5G because of its stronger processor. It is a Dimensity 800U by MediaTek, a definitely better SoC compared with the Dimensity 700 found on its more affordable sibling. Further, with the Pro variant, you can also get more RAM: up to 8 GB. The internal storage of the most expensive variant is the same for both handsets: 128 GB. But the Realme Narzo 30 Pro 5G also comes in a version with 64 GB of storage offering a higher value for money. Note that Narzo 30 Pro 5G has Android 10 out of the box, while Narzo 30 5G has Android 11.

Camera

Realme Narzo 30 5G and 30 Pro 5G have a triple camera department which includes the same main sensor: a 48 MP camera with an f/1.8 focal aperture. You can find this kind of sensor on most of the lower mid-range phones in the market: it is able to click good photos in good light conditions, but not amazing ones. The Pro variant differs from the vanilla version due to the presence of an additional 8 MP ultrawide camera paired with a 2 MP macro camera, while the standard Narzo 30 5G has just a pair of 2 MP sensors for macros and depth calculations. The front cameras are the same: a 16 MP sensor with f/2.1 focal aperture. These phones are able to record 4K videos from the rear camera and 1080p videos from the front camera.

Battery

At last, Realme Narzo 30 5G and Narzo 30 Pro 5G feature the same battery capacity: 5000 mAh. Their chipsets are built with the same production process and the display is the same, so they provide more or less the same battery life. The Realme Narzo 30 Pro 5G wins the fast charging comparison with a power of 30W, while Narzo 30 5G has just 18W.

Price

Realme Narzo 30 5G is priced at Rs. 15,999 / $215 in India, while the Pro version costs Rs. 16,290 / $220. If we exclude that the vanilla Narzo 30 5G has Android 11 out of the box while the Pro variant has Android 10, the Narzo 30 Pro 5G is definitely a better phone and it even offers a higher value for money with the actual prices.

ZTE unveils YouCare, a 5G Smart T-shirt that can monitor vital health data

A revolutionary remote health monitoring service, called YouCare has just been launched at the ongoing Mobile World Conference (MWC) 2021 holding in Barcelona, Spain. YouCare is based on a new technology that enables excellent health monitoring using a t-shirt with sensors embedded and data transmission via the 5G network. The t-shirt is a washable and reusable textile material and looks like a regular t-shirt.

The YouCare project is conceptualized to develop textile devices that can be used for health monitoring without the use of invasive and uncomfortable metal materials. The t-shirt was wholly developed in Italy, according to the developers, can detect several vital bio-markers in the body and transmit them seamlessly using the 5G network infrastructure provided by Chinese network infrastructure provider ZTE.

At the launch of the project today in Barcelona, ZTE stressed its joy at being part of the team that has produced the revolutionary health service monitoring project. The company underscored again, the tremendous opportunities that could be harnessed using the 5G network. ZTE further reiterated its continued support for the innovative work by the Italian team. The company also says it will initiate the YouCare 5G test soon.

YouCare works by detecting bio-vital health parameters using imperceptible polymeric sensors embedded on the shirt. A miniaturized control records the data, which is then converted to digital format. This data is then sent to a bidirectional platform, which then transmits the data to a smartphone or smartwatch. The data could also be transmitted to a remote unit for analysis.

Several vital health parameters can be detected by the YouCare t-shart. These bio-vital parameters include respiratory act analysis, electrocardiogram, sweat, and muscle activity that could help to identify various health conditions using the textile sensors. The data generated is then sent through 5G infrastructure enabled by ZTE to dedicated centers or individual users. The project could dramatically expand access to healthcare to a wide array of persons and remote monitoring can be really helpful in assisting those with chronic ailments to get a prompt attention on the go. Several stakeholders like the International Red Cross, are excited at the prospects of the project.ZTE

The pursuit of textile monitoring technology could hold the key to several innovative breakthroughs like telemedicine, sports, work, and so on. When this technology is then combined with the super-fast 5G network, the opportunities could be very huge. For one thing, unlike the smart wearable devices whose area of contact with the body is only the wrist, the new t-shirt offers a wider surface area for data acquisition.

Google Messages will autodelete OTP messages for Indian users

There are multiple services that send OTP messages to you when you want to carry out a transaction or as a form of authentication when you want to register or log in. These messages clog up the inbox, especially if you don’t delete them immediately. If you use Google Messages, then you won’t have to worry about these messages.

Among the new features that Google will be rolling out to its Messages app in India is the autodeletion of OTP messages after a period – specifically 24 hours. Users will be able to turn on the feature as seen in the gif below and this should help you clear your inbox.

Google has also announced that the app will use machine learning to automatically sort your messages into categories. Messages will now be classified into personal, transactions, OTPs, and offers, making it easier for you to find a particular message.

These new features will begin rolling out to Indian users (Android 8 and up) in the next few weeks in English. Google reiterates that these features are optional and can be turned off under the settings menu in Messages. There is no news yet on when it will be available for other regions.
