First custom ROM for POCO X3 arrives within a month of its launch

Smartphones running on MIUI are generally popular in the custom ROM community for various reasons. Mid-range POCO X2, which also runs on MIUI, has loads of custom ROMs. And now, its successor, POCO X3 NFC, has got a first working custom ROM within a month of its release.

Xiaomi Poco X3 NFC

The first working ROM, Nitrogen OS for POCO X3 NFC, is compiled by a senior member at XDA, xyyx. The ROM, however, is based on Android 10 and not 11. That said, this is based on AOSP(Android Open Source Project) and is sure to give a near-stock experience to users. Also, the ROM doesn’t contain any bloatware apart from the essential system apps. It doesn’t even include GApps(Google Apps) and you will have to flash it separately. XDA report also says that the ROM contains certain features hand-picked from LineageOS, OmniROM, Dirty Unicorns. If you wondering what these are, they are some of the popular custom ROMs.

That said, early builds of ROMs are sure to contain bugs. And, Nitrogen OS for POCO X3 NFC also has early bugs like broken video recording, inability to set SELinux to Enforcing mode, absence of Double-tap to wake feature. However, on looking at the current update of bugs on the Nitrogen OS XDA page for POCO X3 NFC, the bug section only lists SELinux. Hence, there is a possibility that the updated versions will fix the above bugs.

Other than this, basic features like Wi-Fi, calling, camera is reportedly working fine. You can visit the XDA forum page to download and install the Nitrogen OS ROM on your POCO X3 if interested. Do note that you need a device with bootloader unlocked, and a custom recovery like TWRP installed on the device as a pre-requisite.

POCO launched the POCO X3 smartphone recently at a price tag of around 199 euros. The device features a 6.67-inch FHD+ LCD display with 120Hz, Snapdragon 732G SoC, 64MP Sony IMX 682 equipped quad rear camera, 6,000mAh battery with 33W fast charging.

Lenovo Tab P11 Google Play Console listing reveals certain specs

Lenovo is one of the few companies that sell Android tablets. In late August, the company announced its high-end tablet for the year 2020 called Tab P11 Pro alongside entry-level Tab M10 HD Gen 2 and Lenovo Smart Clock Essential. Now, over a month later, the vanilla Tab P11 gets listed on Google Play Console and Google Supported Devices list.

Lenovo Logo Featured

Lenovo Android tablets are usually cheaper than the Samsung models. However, they also feature inferior specifications at times. Unfortunately, this seems to be the case with the upcoming Tab P11 as well, at least in terms of chipset.

Because according to its Google Play Console listing (via @stufflistings), it will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 unlike Galaxy Tab A7, which comes with Snapdragon 662. Whereas, on the plus side, the Lenovo tablet is listed with 4GB RAM, opposed to 3GB RAM in the Samsung model.

The listing also reveals it to sport an unknown sized display with a resolution of 1200 x 2000 pixels. Also, It is said to run Android 10 out of the box. Further, Google Supported Devices list confirms its model number to be TB-J606F (via @techpreacher8).

Sadly, that’s all the information available about the forthcoming Lenovo Tab P11 at the moment. Anyway, we expect this tablet to launch soon in the coming days.

Sony’s PlayStation 5 official teardown video reveals a massive cooling fan

The PlayStation 5 is Sony’s next-gen gaming console and it goes on sale next month. Last weekend, we saw a hands-on video of the console alongside several minutes of gameplay footage from Japan. Today, Sony released a teardown video that shows the internals of the gaming console.

The 7-minute long video which was posted on Twitter earlier today further confirms how insanely big the PlayStation 5 is. The console which is clad in white on both sides has a USB Type-C port and USB Type-A port in front while the back is home to two USB 3.0 ports (10Gbps), a LAN port, the HDMI out port, and the power input port.

The PS5 is a really powerful console and to keep it cool, Sony has put air vents in front and on the back. The video also shows that the circular base that the console sits on needs to be screwed on if you intend to place the console in a vertical position. In landscape mode, it clips on to the body with the aid of a clamp. Compared to the Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X that can stand and lay on their sides without the need for a stand, the PS5 is a bit too extra.

PlayStation 5 cooling fan

The teardown shows that it is easy to take off those white plates on the sides of the console. All it needs a bit of unclamping at the sides. When removed, you are greeted by a large cooling fan that extends to both sides. There is also a plate that can be removed to reveal a PCIe 4.0 SSD slot for storage expansion.

The teardown shows the SSD storage is soldered on the board and there is a custom 12-channel SSD controller that helps it achieve its blazingly fast speeds. We also get a look at the AMD supplied CPU and GPU, the former which uses liquid metal for cooling.

Apart from when trying to add more storage, there should be no need to open up your console. Nevertheless, if you are curious to know what is inside your latest gaming console, this video should be more than enough or others that will be made by YouTubers when the PlayStation 5 goes on sale.

Samsung UK chaffs Huawei in a promotional tweet of Galaxy Note 20 Ultra

Samsung is definitely leveraging the trade war between the US and Huawei, at least in the UK. A new Marketing Ad for Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has been put up by the company’s UK division on Twitter. And, it straight up mocks the absence of Google Mobile Services(GMS) on Huawei devices.

Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G

The company’s official UK Twitter account has a tweet announcing(via PhoneArena) the trade-in offers for the recently launched Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. As per the offer, the company is giving up to £350 off on exchange of old Huawei devices. Specifically, it shows a £350 trade-in value for the Huawei P30 Pro on or before November 8, 2020.

The post also has a video describing the offer along with it. In it, the company has blatantly called out the absence of Google Maps on Huawei devices. The video opens up with a slogan, “How do you upgrade to the latest Huawei phone without using your Google Maps app?”. It is basically encouraging people to buy their device to continue using Google services in Europe. While Samsung is indeed stating the obvious here, is cashing money out of someone’s misery a good thing?

Huawei has been facing pressure in all directions from the US. After banning Huawei from using the GMS in 2019, the US government is longing for more. It is actively asking countries in Europe to cancel the 5G deal, and has gone further to block supplies like semiconductor chips to Huawei that uses US tech.

The company has been trying everything to get back but is almost toast outside of China. It’s sales started crippling in Europe soon after the ban took center stage. Although it remained strong globally surpassing Samsung to become the leading smartphone brand in Q2 2020, the story of Europe is different. In fact, Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi edged Huawei as the third-largest vendor in Europe recently. That said, we will have to wait and see how this promotion works in favor of Samsung in the UK.

Motorola will launch new Home Appliances including AC, Refrigerator, Washing Machine on October 9

Motorola has announced that it will launch a new range of home appliances under the ‘Motorola’ branding on October 9 in India. A picture shared by the company on Twitter suggests that the products will be Air Conditioner, Refrigerator, and Washing Machine.

The event, as per a Flipkart teaser page(via Gadgets360), will take place on October 9 at 3 PM IST. Motorola will most likely stream the event online. From the looks of it, the company is launching the products on the occasion of the upcoming Flipkart’s Big Billion Days(October 16- October 21). And, the company’s post on Twitter gives us a closer look at the products.

First up, one of the products on the teaser image is Refrigerator. It is black in color and looks like it also has a Water/ice dispenser built-in. There are two long doors that probably houses the section of the majority of storage items. And, two more compartments beneath the doors as well. Besides, there is a Motorola branding and Adaptive Inverter Technology at the top right. The inverter keyword is probably to save the energy smartly.

Next up, the Washing machine in the teaser image is a front-load machine. There is a digital display with a menu dial at the center. Lastly, the Air conditioner takes the shape of a typical split-ac design with a central digital display. Plus, AC is silver in color whereas the washing machine has grey accents. Unfortunately, there is no additional info regarding the products yet. That said, the teaser images repeatedly boast of the word “Truly Smart”. This could either mean energy efficiency or integration of a voice assistant via smartphone but nothing is confirmed yet.

Apart from this, the company is also launching a new range of Smart TVs on October 9. Motorola has been in the Smart product segment for a while starting with the first Smart TV back in September 2019. However, with the new launch, the company will be expanding its footprint across other home appliances as well. Let’s wait for more details on Friday.

Certain Galaxy Note20 Ultra users are facing burn-in issue with official S-View Flip Cover

The Galaxy Note20 Ultra is the most expensive Galaxy Note device ever launched for a starting price of $1,299.99. Unfortunately, that does not make it the perfect phone as certain users are reporting display burn-in issue on their units with the official S-View Flip Cover accessory.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Display Burn-in Issue

AMOLED displays are susceptible to get burn-ins in the longer run. Poor-quality panels are likely to be affected earlier. The display on the Galaxy Note20 Ultra is definitely not a low-quality panel but still, some users are facing the issue.

These are users who use Samsung’s official S-View Flip Cover made for Galaxy Note20 Ultra. As you can see from the image attached above, the burn-in is visible on the right side of the phone’s display, the part of the screen used by the accessory’s transparent section.

The root cause for this issue is yet to be determined, however, Android Police notes that it could be due to a bug that fails to turn off the portion of the display used by the cover after a long period of time.

Interestingly, the issue got fixed for select affected users when they switched to a different case. That said, Samsung is yet to release an official statement regarding this matter.

Samsung to make more appliances disinfectant with UV LED technology next year

Samsung Electronics introduced a UV sterilizer that charges and disinfects the phones recently. And now, it is reportedly planning to launch products like home appliances fitted with UV LEDs more in 2021. A report by TheElec says Samsung’s latest decision is to make people worry less about disinfection amidst a pandemic.

Samsung UV Credits: TheElec

According to the report, Samsung planned to use the UV-C LEDs on consumer electronics products back in September. Apparently, it’s plan is to use the wavelength range of 250-280nm of the UV-C radiation. This is understandable considering UV-C, which generally operates around 200-280nm, is effective to kill germs, viruses, bacteria, particularly around 264nm wavelength. For the unware, UV LED emits ultra-violet light that is invisible to human eyes. There are three range of UV light- UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C. UV-C is Germicidal and has deodorant effects. It kills all the germs, bacteria, viruses by destroying their nucleic acids and disrupting DNAs.

Samsung, so far has only a small range of products like the Bespoke range of refrigerators. And, in case you don’t know, Samsung’s range of home appliances like microwaves, dishwashers, air conditioners, fridges, washing machines, driers and air purifiers, and more. If the report is true, the company will apply the UV-C LED disinfection in 20-30% of home appliances by 2021. However, it is reportedly yet to finalize the list.

Further, the company will reportedly outsource the LEDs from South Korea and China and not from its own sister, S-LED. The report also says that Seoul semiconductor and Semiconlight have the capacity to make UV-C LEDs in South Korea. That said, Samsung might seek after one of them. While the exact reason for the outsourcing is unknown, the complexity of UV LEDs and the requirement of sophisticated technology could be the reason.

Although Samsung tried its best in implementing the disinfection during the early days of COVID-19, it hasn’t been that vocal when it comes to applying UV LEDs to its products. However, it’s rival LG’s Innotek, has experience with InnoUV and already hosts a range of products with UV LEDs. That said, with the outbreak of the virus, UV LEDs are blooming and it will only get better in the future.

Optical lens module suppliers are getting ready for more affordable 5G smartphones

5G smartphones are forecasted to account for 50% of the entire market in 2023, as per IDC. Budget 5G smartphones are already a thing in 2020. They are expected to get even more affordable in the coming months. A new report further confirms it.

Xiaomi Mi 10T Lite
Xiaomi Mi 10T Lite costs only €279

These days, budget smartphones offer certain features that cannot be found even in premium devices. However, the experience cannot be the same as on those expensive flagships. Nevertheless, these affordable phones are value for money, especially those by Chinese companies.

Now, according to DigiTimes, optical lens module suppliers from Taiwan and China are gearing up to expand their share in China’s entry-level and mid-range 5G smartphone market. That’s because popular smartphone makers like Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi are currently focussing more on these type of devices.

Some of these notable optical lens module suppliers are Taiwan’s Newmax Technology and Chinese firms like Sunny Optical Technology, O-film Tech, and Q Technology.

Talking about Newmax, DigiTimes says that this company’s shipments will regain momentum in the second half of 2020 after slower sales in the first half of this year.

The Taiwanese company’s revenue declined 9.7% YoY due to poor performance in H1. It’s revenue totalled at NT$1.891 billion, which happens to be 28.7% lower than last year.

Tecno Camon 16 officially teased as coming to India on October 10

Transsion Holding Tecno took the wraps off the Camon 16 lineup in Africa a short while back. The company has now hinted that the phone will hit India soon.Tecno Camon 16

A teaser released by Tecno on Twitter shows that the company was planning to launch a Camon 16 series model but there is no indication as to the number of models that will be launched. However, the teaser confirms the product will be launched in mid-October and will disrupt the “photographic experience” with an aggressive price of below INR15,000 ($205).

The teaser further shows that the new Camon 16 smartphone will have four shooters, with the main one having a 64 MP sensor, and will have “AI-enabled Ultra Night lens”.

Even though the trio of Camon 16, 16 Pro and Camon 16 Premier were all announced, the company did not release pricing and availability details of the Camon 16. It is possible the Camon 16 will make its official debut in store shelves in India first. Also, the teased specs resemble those of the Camon 16 Premier.

The new Camon 16 smartphone will be available on Flipkart, but we don’t know when we’ll have the full info. One tipster said October 10 but we’re yet to hear anything official from Tecno.

Global Tablet shipments to decline every year from 2021 to 2025: Digitimes

A research by Digitimes reveals that shipments of electronic Tablets will decline in 2021 and beyond. In fact, the slip will likely continue for the next five years. And that will mainly occur as demand narrows down to the enterprise and education sectors.

In the estimate report, it is quoted that a dip of about 10.5% in shipments is imminent in the next year(2021). However, the overall shipments will float around 120 million units every year from 2021-2025. Previously, COVID-19 forced people to stay at home while they study and work online. This led to a surge in demand for Tablet and inturn increase in shipments midway of Q1 2020. Particularly, China, which is the epicenter of the pandemic, witnessed a near 30% increase in the educational tablet market.

Following this, the Q2 2020 showed a flat growth of 26% in shipments with Apple leading the way, and Lenovo and Huawei becoming fastest growing brands. However, people are starting to adapt to the situation now by returning to their offices and colleges. And, as operations across the world resume, the latest report states the demand will mainly be from high-end enterprise segments. Also, the report denotes that Huawei might lose a chunk of its hold next year.

This is because the US government has recently started pressurizing the Chinese giant by restricting the supply of key components like SoC to its products. That said, Lenovo and Apple will reportedly grab a bite of Huawei’s global tablet market as a result.

Additionally, Amazon, famous for its Fire tablets, will face a decline in the next five years. The reason for the decline is the focus on small-size tablets. This is understandable considering the demand for large-screen tablets have grown by a near 10% YoY in shipments of tablets above 10-inch displays.

Qualcomm to launch its own brand of Gaming Smartphones: Report

Qualcomm is apparently planning to launch its own brand of gaming smartphones soon. A report has suggested that the known chipmaker is working with another brand to launch its own mobile gaming centric handsets.

According to a DigiTimes report, “Qualcomm reportedly will team up with Asustek Computer to develop and launch its own-brand gaming smartphones at the end of 2020 at the earliest, according to industry sources.” In other words, the chip giant will team up with Asus, who will build the gaming smartphones for Qualcomm. Furthermore, the first model into this new lineup could arrive as early as the end of 2020, as per the industry sources.

Qualcomm Tech Summit 2020

Notably, Qualcomm is also gearing up for the Snapdragon Tech Summit, which is a virtual event that will start from 1st December 2020 and last till 2nd December 2020. In this event, the company is expected to announce its next gen flagship the Snapdragon 875 SoC. With recent launches, the company has been working on launching chipsets focused more on gaming, which has been a growing market in the smartphone industry.

Qualcomm chips like Snapdragon 730G or 765G are specifically focused on offering good gaming performance in mid range segments. And now, it appears that the company wants to enter the market as well, rather than simply supplying the numerous OEMs with its chips. Asus is also a great partner brand for this lineup as the company is also known for its own ROG Gaming Smartphone lineup, with the latest launch being the ROG Phone 3 that sports the powerful Snapdragon 865+ chip.

Qualcomm
ASUS ROG Phone 3

Unfortunately, finer details regarding this possible Qualcomm gaming handset is currently unknown. Although, it can be assumed that it will likely arrive with its latest Snapdragon 875 chipset but that is still speculation, so take it with a pinch of salt. However, we can also expect to hear more about the device soon, with a launch that would most probably be during the Snapdragon Tech Summit.

Lenovo ThinPad X1 Carbon 2021 leaked with new design changes

The next generation of Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon has just been leaked. While the company has offered one of the best business oriented laptops in the market, recent iterations have offered no real changes in design apart from minor internal upgrades. Now, the new leak suggests slight changes in design and other aspects as well.

Lenovo

According to a LaptopMag report, a new leak from a Chinese website called Baidu has revealed that the company is planning on introducing new changes to its upcoming generation of laptops. As per a user that claimed to have information regarding the 2021 ThinkPad X1 Carbon and ThinkPad X1 Yoga, Lenovo might be bringing changes to the displays of the new laptops.

Reportedly, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon and X1 Yoga might be getting their first redesign in years, which is the new 16:10 aspect ratio of its display. This aspect ratio would enable the screens to be taller and more narrow than the standard 16:9 aspect ratio found on most laptops. Notably, the change wouldn’t arrive as a complete surprise since the company recently launched the ThinkPad X1 Nano which features 16:10 display as well.

Lenovo

The leak arrived with certain images that also showcased a few other changes to the ThinkPad X1 Carbon’s design. Its hinge is now in a bar style over its previous two small independent hinges that can be found in current models. This would allow for a more rigid frame, with the new speaker grille’s position being housed on the top, right next to the keyboard on either side. Unfortunately, finer details regarding the products are currently unknown, so stay tuned for more updates.

Samsung patents hideaway hinge with LED indicators for foldables

Samsung is the leading player in the foldable smartphone category. The latest foldable from the company is Galaxy Z Fold2. This device is also set to launch as a China-exclusive limited edition Galaxy W21. Ahead of it, a utility patent regarding LED indicators in foldables filed by the South Korean tech giant has been published.

Samsung Hideaway Hinge LED Indicators Utility Patent Renders

Samsung filed a utility patent for a hideaway hinge with LED indicators with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in March using Galaxy Z Fold2 as a reference. However, this patent was only approved and published on October 1.

It was unearthed by none other than LetsGoDigital. The publication also created 3D renders showcasing the patent in action.

According to the documents, if this patent is ever utilized in a foldable smartphone, that device will come with a six LED module hidden inside its hinge. These red, blue, green and white lights will be covered by a translucent layer to diffuse their rays.

As per the patent, the above-mentioned four different-colored lights can be used to form more combinations. Talking about their use case, like most LED strip on smartphones, they are merely meant for notifications and aesthetics.

The Galaxy Z series of foldable phones are premium consumer products. These lights make them look fancy, which is not ideal for everyone. Hence, we don’t think Samsung to introduce this as a feature in its next foldable.
