Design

Do you mind about having a dual punch-hole in your display in order to get the most narrow bezels? If you do not, Realme X50 Pro Player will offer you amazing design with a glass back, an aluminum frame, and a compact camera module, for a very elegant look. If you want a full screen experience, Redmi K30 Pro has a holeless display since it comes with a motorized pop-up camera. But its glass back houses a more invasive camera module. Honor Play4 Pro has a gaming-centric design, not the best for those who want an elegant phone.

Display

Realme X50 Pro Player is equipped with the same display as the vanilla X50 Pro and it is the most amazing panel of this trio. Besides coming with the Super AMOLED technology and a Full HD+ resolution, it has the HD10+ certification and a high 90 Hz refresh rate. Redmi K30 Pro takes the silver medal with a Super AMOLED and HDR10+ display, but unfortunately, it lacks the 90 Hz refresh rate. Honor Play4 Pro is equipped with an average IPS panel supporting a standard refresh rate and providing a 1080p resolution, just like the ones you can find on most of the midrange phones.

Hardware/Software

Redmi K30 Pro and Realme X50 Pro Player offer a higher level of performance because they are fueled by Snapdragon 865 mobile platform which is more powerful than the Kirin 990 chipset found on the Honor Play4 Pro. Realme X50 Pro Player looks more convincing because it offers up to 12 GB of RAM (instead of just 8 GB like the Redmi K30 Pro), but Redmi K30 Pro still looks awesome with its UFS 3.1 internal storage (X50 Pro Player has a UFS 3.0 native storage). With all of these devices, you get Android 10 out of the box.

Camera

The most complete rear camera department belongs to the Redmi K30 Pro as it comes with a 64 MP quad camera including a 13 MP ultrawide sensor and a 5 MP telephoto macro sensor. But the Honor Play4 Pro has better zoom capabilities thanks to a telephoto lens with OIS and 8x optical zoom. When it comes to front cameras, Honor Play4 Pro is superior as it offers a dual selfie camera including a 32 MP main sensor and an 8 MP ultrawide lens.

Battery

The biggest battery belongs to the Redmi K30 Pro which can provide a longer battery life on a single charge. But it has the slowest charging technology with just 30W. The fastest charging technology belongs to the Realme X50 Pro Player with a power of 65W bringing the battery from 0 to 100% in just 35 minutes. But Honor Play4 Pro is still pretty fast with its 40W charging tech, and it even supports reverse charging.

Price

Honor Play4 Pro carries a starting price of just €360/$408 in China, Realme X50 Pro Player starts from €334/$379, and Redmi K30 Pro is priced €375/$425. If you are seeking the best gaming experience, choose the Realme X50 Pro Player which offers a higher refresh rate and a best hardware department. Redmi K30 Pro gets close under these points of view, but it is inferior. However, it has better cameras and a bigger battery. Honor Play4 Pro has very interesting cameras, but not everyone may like its display and its chipset has an inferior performance level to the Snapdragon 865 found on Realme X50 Pro Player and Redmi K30 Pro.

Realme X3 SuperZoom Camera Review: Can It Match the Huawei P40 Pro in Zooming?

Recently, Realme released an important smartphone in the affordable flagship segment – the Realme X3 Superzoom. Probably from its name you’ve already guessed what strength it holds. Yes, the phone is called SuperZoom because it has incredible zooming capability.

We have seen how Realme has successfully launched special smartphones with incredible pricing. And the X3 Superzoom is no exception. Usually, smartphones equipped with super camera combinations supporting 5x optical zoom are pretty expensive but the new Realme model stands out from its competition.

While it seemed that high resolution zooming cameras would be exclusive to expensive flagships, the Realme X3 SuperZoom tries to change this trend by bringing it to the upper mid-range segment.

Realme X3 SuperZoom Persicope Camera Featured

We have already posted the Realme X3 SuperZoom hands on a few days back but now let’s take a closer look at the device and its cameras. In this X3 SuperZoom camera review, we try to check whether the powerful cameras do justice to its specs in real-life performance.

Realme X3 SuperZoom Display

Before talking about its camera, let’s look at its display. We think it’s unfair to the phone if we don’t take about its 120Hz refresh rate, even if it’s not on the first page of Realme official advertisement. But it’s an LCD display which doesn’t allow to have an in-screen fingerprint reader — so you have to use a side-mounted fingerprint-enabled power button. The pixel arrangement is quite similar to what we’ve seen on the other 120Hz LCD display. Compared to most mid-rangers that feature a 60Hz display, the X3 superzoom offers much better fluidity.

Realme X3 SuperZoom Review Featured (5)

Realme X3 SuperZoom Camera Review

As for its camera, the X3 Superzoom features a 64MP main camera with a Samsung GW1 sensor which was announced at the end of last year. Another highlight is the top 8MP telephoto camera. It supports up to 5x Optical zooming and 60x hybrid zooming. To guarantee its stability, the telephoto camera has OIS anti-shake. The other two cameras are an 8MP wide-angle shooter and a 2MP macro camera.

Let’s check out whether this combination works well in real life.

Realme X3 SuperZoom Persicope Cameras

First, let’s see some samples from the primary camera. The original high-resolution sensor shot samples with pretty good detail and clarity. And under good light conditions, the samples had excellent exposure and white balance. An interesting feature for the Realme camera app is its AI color dazzle mode. It’s similar to the vivid color mode on other phones. But at the same time, the Realme model could adjust the colors in a smarter way of AI recognition. The color reproduction is lively with higher saturation than the originals.

But a problem is that though the photos shot by the main camera had impressive contrast, the dynamic range of the photos didn’t satisfy us as the dark areas lost some detail and had some noise.

And then we try to see how it performs in night scenes. From the samples, we could see significant brightness improvement and the exposure balance between brightness and shadow. In the aspect of noise reduction, it managed to smoothen the dark scenes in the images at the software level. But if you look closer, we could see some blurring marks left by software tuning.

Now let’s talk about the samples shot by the wide-angle camera. Although the 8MP resolution now is not the best option for a smartphone’s wide-angle camera, the wide-angle samples of the Realme X3 Superzoom still have decent colors and good anti-distortion. And the X3 also had the same problem on the wide-angle camera as most phones — it didn’t do well on removing color fringing in the image.

And let’s move to another camera, the macro camera. Well, it’s almost one of the standard setups for Realme’s models. And as usual, the Realme Macro samples maintained a pretty good production in really close shooting distance.

There are a few smartphones that have 5x optical zoom but this model is the first mid-ranger that actually features 60x digital zoom capability. The Realme X3 SuperZoom covered almost the same shooting range as the Huawei’s latest P40 Pro flagship – from 0.6x  to 5x optical zoom, and even longer digital zoom as well.

We also compared it with the P40 Pro’s zooming samples. For the 5x zoom option, although the X3 Superzoom samples have lower resolution than Huawei’s samples, Realme’s zooming samples have pretty good color representation and better color contrast. When we zoom up to 10x, the resolution strength of the Huawei’s model is more significant. But here we have to praise the Realme X3 Superzoom for the OIS anti-shaking, which allowed us to shoot the clear zoomed-in photos with my hand.

You can get the original camera samples from this drive link.

It’s clear that Realme X3 Superzoom’s biggest strength is its telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom – unseen on smartphones in its price range. So we had to check how good the Realme X3 Superzoom camera was, especially when compared to the best in the market – the Huawei P40 Pro.

The samples showed us that the Realme model did not fall very behind in quality. The cameras are not a gimmick and perform really well for a device in its price range.

So if you want an affordable smartphone with powerful zooming capability, the Realme X3 SuperZoom won’t disappoint you!

Weiyuan Smart Handheld Bladeless fan is Xiaomi’s latest crowdfunding product

Xiaomi Youpin has played host to another innovative product – the Weiyuan Smart Handheld Bladeless fan. The fan features a design which has won the German iF design 2019 award as well as the Good Design and Red Dot design award. It is under crowdfunding for just 39 yuan (~$5) but will retail for 69 yuan (~$10) after the exercise. Weiyuan Smart Handheld Bladeless fan

The bladeless fan adopts a simple but impressive design. The design is such that it blows air from a ring with no external blades. Due to the absence of physical blades, the fan will not generate dust or hurt children’s fingers. The Bladeless Fan adopts a working mechanism similar to other known brands like Dyson. The air is drawn in by a compressor in the base and then directed up into a ring. It comes out of a slit around the ring and passes over a shape like that of an aircraft wing (Coanda effect).

Weiyuan Smart Handheld Bladeless fan

The bottom of the Weiyuan Smart Handheld Bladeless fan adopts a 7-wing diagonal flow impeller, which can form a high-pressure airflow into the air. When the air guide vane is pressurized due to the high airflow, the air is then pushed toward the air outlet at a wind speed of 7.52m/s.Weiyuan Smart Handheld Bladeless fan

The bladeless fan has a sophisticated internal design with noise reduction at the foundation. The high-pressure airflow passes silently and the fan’s running sound is controlled within 55dB which is cooler and quiet.

The Weiyuan Smart Handheld Bladeless fan is powered by a built-in 2000mAh lithium battery. Designed with three-speed level controls, the battery can last up to 10 hours if the fan is operated at the lowest speed level. It can be charged through a USB-C interface and has the 5V/1A power rating. The battery can be fully charged in 3 hours between charge.

Another impressive aspect is its lightweight. The bladeless fan weighs just 137 grams making it a compact device that can fit into a backpack easily.

India announces incentives worth ₹ 50,000 crore to boost local smartphone production

The Indian government is encouraging international electronics companies to manufacture their products in the country by introducing new schemes. The Ministry of Electronics has announced an incentive of about ₹50,000 crores ($6.6 billion).

OPPO Find X

The government has introduced three new schemes and they are as listed below.

  • Production Linked Incentive (PLI)
  • Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors (SPECS)
  • Modified Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMC 2.0)

The most interesting out of three is Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. The Ministry of Electronics has removed certain clauses, which were previously opposed by the companies.

The new updated scheme now states that companies can enforce force majeure in unfortunate times like the ongoing pandemic. Also, incentives ranging between 4% to 6% over a period of 5 years have also been introduced.

Smartphone companies interested in this scheme must manufacture high-end phones (above $200) worth ₹4,000 crores in the first year followed by ₹8,000 crores, ₹15,000 crores, ₹20,000 crores, and ₹25,000 crores in the next four years to be eligible for the incentives.

Whereas, SPECS, on the other hand, will grant an incentive of 25% on capital expenditure for electronic goods like semiconductor/ display fabrication units, Assembly, Test, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP) units, and others.

Lastly, EMC 2.0 will provide support for building world-class infrastructure with common facilities and amenities like Ready Built Factory (RBF) sheds / Plug and Play facilities.

iPhone Xr
iPhone XR is currently being assembled in India

With companies looking to shift their production base out of China, India could turn out to be a favorable region for smartphone manufacturers in the coming years. Apple, Xiaomi, and others already manufacture smartphones sold in India but such incentives are meant to attract more investment from manufacturers, with the possibility of positioning India as a global smartphone export hub.

Amazon in early talks with Airtel to buy 5% stake for $2 billion

A few weeks back, Facebook announced to invest $5.7 billion in Reliance Jio for a 9.9% stake. It was soon followed by a report, which revealed Google is also in talks with Vodafone Idea to buy 5% stake in the company. Now, a fresh report by Reuters says Amazon is also joining the bandwagon as it is eyeing to buy 5% stake in Bharti Airtel for $2 billion.

Amazon Logo Dark

According to the report, the sources close to the matter revealed both the US-based tech giant and India’s third-largest telecommunication company are in early talks for a new deal.

Amazon is willing to invest $2 billion for 5% stake in Airtel, however, the deal could either change or even agreement may not be reached according to the sources.

Having said that, one of the sources also cited that if the stake buyout fails, the companies will look at a commercial transaction that could give Airtel customers cheap access to Amazon products.

Both the companies declined to comment on the deal when Reuters reached out to them.

The investments from US tech giants can sort of help the suffering carriers in India, which are yet to pay out their AGR (Adjusted Gross Revenue) dues. In return, these companies get access to one of the largest market in the world to push their products.

Honor has quietly announced Honor 8S 2020 in the United Kingdom. The entry-level smartphone is available to purchase from the brand’s official website for only £99.99.

The newly announced Honor 8S 2020 is nothing but the same Honor 8S aka Honor Play 8 (China) from last year. The original phone launched in 2GB + 32GB and 3GB + 64GB configurations depending on regions.

Samsung AR glasses patent showcases an easier and innovative navigation interface

A recent Samsung patent has revealed a new AR glasses technology. The South Korean tech giant has dabbled with AR (augmented reality) and VR (virtual reality) technologies in the past and the new patent reveals an improved and easier navigation system.

Samsung

According to the patent description, the new AR glasses will be capable of offering users step by step instructions when assisting during navigation. The innovative navigation system offers users directions directly through the glasses. This system highly resembles a heads up display that is seen in fighter aircraft and recently in a few cars’ windshields as well. However, the AR glasses might offer a more immersive experience that might distract the user less while driving.

The Samsung AR glasses will be able to provide an overlay that offers navigational information in real time. This device could even provide information regarding different points of interest that a driver may notice while looking around, making it more versatile and informative at the same time. For example, information can be displayed for exit ramps, fuel stations, or even food joints if needed.

Samsung

The AR glasses from Samsung would require a few additional systems to work, namely sync with a map application, GPS tracking, multiple cameras within the car, and sensors as well. At the moment, the company does offer various smart car related products that feature these components, but it seems like Samsung is taking it a step further and making it more interactive.

HTC Desire 20 Pro Specifications leak via Google Play Console

HTC is no longer a big name in the smartphone market. Still, a design sketch of Desire 20 Pro emerged at the end of April courtesy of Evan Blass aka @evleaks. Now, its specifications leak as well through Google Play Console.

HTC Desire 20 Pro Specifications Google Play Console

Going by the design, the HTC Desire 20 Pro certainly looks like any other mid-range smartphone in 2020, however, its internal specs are outdated.

As per the Google Play Console listing, the handset’s codename, as well as model number, are htc_bymdugl and HTC 2Q9J10000 respectively. But if we recall, Mr Blass claimed the codename to be Bayamo.

Further, the listing reveals the phone to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 SoC paired with 6GB RAM, which is a bummer since the chip is over a year old and is mostly found in budget smartphones.

HTC Desire 20 Pro Design Sketch Leak

Whereas, the display of the phone will be fairly modern as it will be an FHD+ (2340 x 1080 pixels) panel with a punch-hole at the top left corner. Lastly, like any other new Android smartphone, it will run Android 10 out of the box.

Unfortunately, the listing lacks camera specs along with the official renders of the device. Also, it is not sure when HTC will announce this handset but hopefully, the brand prices it aggressively.

Apple iPhone SE 2020 sparks the highest interest in SE Asia amidst a declining smartphone market

Despite the Coronavirus pandemic disrupting various economies and industries, the smartphone market is still holding on thanks to fresh launches. While the industry has seen a noticeable decline in sales, brands like Apple, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and others have still kept an interest in the market thanks to their new offerings during this time of crisis.

Apple iPhone SE 2020

According to a report from iPrice, Apple’s latest smartphone, the iPhone SE 2020, has come out on top, with the highest number of searches online. The new iPhone model retained the highest demand across 7 countries (Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Hongkong) in April 2020. The Apple mid ranger witnessed a search interest rise of a massive 206 percent, which was over triple of the Cupertino based giant’s flagship, iPhone 11 Pro.

Similarly, the OnePlus 8 series arrived second on the interest list in countries like Singapore, Malaysia, The Philippines, Thailand, and Hongkong. Xiaomi’s Mi 10 came in third, with a 7 percent search market share from March to April 2020. The iPhone SE 2020 saw an average of 673,000 during the same period, which accounts for nearly 78 percent of the total search market.

With Apple’s iPhone prices crossing the $1000 mark, an affordable and smaller handset was frequently demanded by its customer base. While the original iPhone SE didn’t see great success, the company has clearly worked on a lot of issues and offered a more attractive handset at the price range.

Xiaomi invests $20 million in Chinese OLED maker Zhiyun

Xiaomi has just invested in the top OLED manufacturer in China. The smartphone vendor has invested 143 million Yuan (roughly 20 million US Dollars) in Dalian Zhiyun Automation Company, which specializes in making LCD, OLED and even mini LED display technology.

Xiaomi

The amount Xiaomi has invested in Zhiyun accounts for about 15.5 million shares in the company. This translates to exactly 5.63 percent of Zhiyun’s total share value. For those unaware, Zhiyun is China’s biggest company that deals in display technology and has worked with other known industry names like BOE, Huaxing, Tianma, and Visionox.

These brands also rival the South Korean tech giant, Samsung, which is one of the largest OLED manufacturers in the world. The company roles in the market also increased with the massive demand for smartphone and display technologies like LCD. This caused the market price of its share to skyrocket in the Shanghai Stock Exchange, breaking the monopoly of Japanese and South Korean companies in the Chinese market.

Now, analysts claim that a similar trend could be witnessed with Zhiyun’s OLED technology, including research into flexible displays, bonding, dispensing, and lamination technology. With the companies trying to shift more towards local sourcing, Zhiyun and other display based companies may soon see an influx of orders from Chinese vendors.

Google Chrome dominates browser market in 2020, Microsoft Edge gains ground

According to a new report, Google Chrome is leading the browser market for 2020. The popular browser from the search engine giant recorded a new high for the fifth straight month with a new high of 69.8 percent market share.

Google Chrome

The report was published by Net Applications, an analytics firm from California, US. The market share held by Chrome has only been achieved by Microsoft‘s then signature browser, Internet Explorer, which held a 70 percent market share back in 2008. So if Google’s Chrome manages to break past the 70 percent mark, it would be the third browser to ever do so.

Microsoft isn’t completely out of the picture yet either. The company’s Edge browser as been gaining popularity in recent months. By its current growth rate, Microsoft Edge is expected to achieve a market share of 10.3 percent by this time in 2021. Another popular contender, Mozilla Firefox, with a market share of 7.2 percent as of May 2020. Although, its growth rate in recent times has been relatively flat. So, at this current rate, it seems that Google will continue to dominate the market until some new player makes an appearance and disrupts the market.
