Huawei files trademark application for “Mate Watch”

Huawei’s Mate line has evolved from being limited to just phones to include other products such as computers (MateBook) and tablets (MatePad). Now Huawei is ready to add smartwatches too.

The Chinese tech giant filed a trademark application early this month for the brand name “Huawei Mate Watch”. Huawei’s smartwatch line is currently called Watch GT with models such as the Watch GT 2 and Watch GT 2e. The trademark application may hint at Huawei’s plan to switch to “Mate Watch” in place of the “Watch GT moniker”.

The Huawei Mate Watch will most likely be unveiled this year, probably at the launch of the Mate 40 series. There is still a lot of waiting to do before then and more details should surface soon.

At the beginning of the year, Huawei also filed a trademark application for “MatePod”. There are speculations that it may be the new name for its headphones but it is also possible it may be the new name of its smart speaker series.

Realme Buds Q revealed in official teaser poster; to launch on May 25

Last week, Realme announced it has sold 1,000,000 smart audio IoT devices worldwide. It appears the manufacturer is on the way to selling its next 1 million units and it plans to do that with the launch of two new audio products. One of them is the Realme Buds Air Neo scheduled to launch on May 25 in India, and the second one is the Realme Buds Q, which has now been revealed will launch on the same day as above but in China.

Realme Buds Q poster

The official Weibo account for Realme has shared a poster that reveals the design of the Realme Buds Q as well as several details including a hint at the price tag.

The Weibo post says the Realme Buds Q was designed by José Lévy, a designer, stylist, and inventor. The design process is said to have taken 180 days with a focus on being lightweight and comfortable.

Realme Buds Q design

The earbuds, which weight 3.6 grams each, have a design different from that of the Realme Buds Air. There are no stems sticking out of your ears and the earbuds have a close-fit design. Realme says it has used an advanced matte processor for the finish. The image shows it will come in black with a matching pebble-shaped case but it will be nice if there are other colorways too. The silicone tips have Realme’s signature yellow color and the case has an LED in front to let you know when it is charging.

The Realme Buds Q looks nice but the only gripe we have with it is the Realme logo on each earbud which seems to be saying both earbuds are for the wearer’s right ear. We believe there will be smaller markings on the inside indicating which earbud is for each ear but the Realme logo will be confusing for some first-time users.

Realme Buds Q price

Realme also teased the cost of the TWS earbuds by including three different prices and asking folks to guess which one it will be. The prices are ¥199 (~$28), ¥299 (~$42), and ¥399 (~$56). Let us know in the comment box below which one you think will be the price tag of the Realme Buds Q.

Remote-controlled e-scooters set to revolutionise scooter-sharing service

Recently, Estonian ride-sharing start-up Bolt unveiled its e-scooter that would be deployed across several cities in Europe. The scooter-sharing service would require some ground personnel who would pick up the scooters between rides for disinfection. Also, there is a charge if the scooter is left outside the designated parking area. Remote-controlled Electric scooter

A new scooter sharing service which is now being test run in Atlanta, Georgia will eliminate the need to fine users for parking the scooter anywhere after use. The project is backed by three companies. Go X supplies the scooter and operates the service while the scooters are fitted with remote controls by Tortoise. A third company is Curiosity Labs, a “smart city” incubator located at Peachtree Corners. The firms believe this service is the future of shared mobility.

These are not actually self-driving scooters and won’t ride you anywhere you want autonomously. The remote controls are actually deployed if there is a demand for the scooter. A team of remote employees located in Mexico City will then use the controls to move the scooters around the business park to where the request was made. In addition, the remote can also be used to move the e-scooter to a designated parking area where there are employees who will disinfect the ride.

The device looks bulkier than the regular e-scooters as there are a pair of training wheels which ensures the two-wheelers are stabled while being remotely driven. Also, there are a couple of components attached to the deck and handlebars. But wit such features, it becomes easy to redistribute the scooters across the city instead of waiting until the end of the day before sending out scooter hunters to redistribute them.

The service will roll out this week with about 100 scooters made available to rent. Rentals can be made using the Go X app.

Apple iPhone sales surged high in the month of April in China

The sales of smartphones tanked in China, the world’s largest smartphone market, thanks to COVID-19 pandemic. But it has begun to improve from the month of March. A new report by CNBC suggests Apple iPhone sales surged high in April than three months before it.

Apple iPhone XR

The coronavirus led lockdowns across China affected all the business in the region just like any other country. But since China started recovering in March, the smartphone sales in the country has drastically improved by April.

According to the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology Institute, the country witnessed a total of 40.782 million units of smartphone shipments in April.

Another report by CINNO Research says Apple alone sold 3.9 million iPhones (160% MoM) in April. Out of those, 24% were iPhone SE 2020 although it was only available from later last month. For comparison, the company sold only 1.9 million units of iPhones in March.

Sales of iPhones in China plunged 60% YoY in February. Apple had to shut down its stores abiding the lockdown rules. But all of its stores were soon re-opened by mid-March, which helped in boosting the sales.

Apple is yet to go through a rough path as demand for 5G smartphones is rising in China and the company has none to offer. iPhone sales are expected to grow in the country only after the launch of the rumored 5G iPhones 12 series.

Redmi Note 7 Pro has an Android 11 Port, Here’s how to install it

Redmi Note 7 Pro launched in February of 2019 in India powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 675. The handset is only available in China other than its debut country. It came with MIUI 10 based on Android Pie out of the box. The phone was later updated to MIUI 11 and is also eligible for MIUI 12. However, it is yet to receive Android 10 update. Despite this, a developer has ported Android 11 for this device and anyone can install it.

Redmi Note 7 Pro All Colors

Xiaomi is known for providing at least three MIUI updates for its Redmi Note devices, however, the same cannot be said for underlying Android OS. On average, the company only gives a single update Android version update to its budget devices.

However, the Redmi Note 7 Pro has still not received a single Android update even after a year from its launch. But thankfully, the device is popular in the custom ROM community just like any other Redmi Note series handset.

The phone has a number of Android 10 custom ROMs and now thanks to a developer called iamharshdeb on Telegram, users can also taste Android 11 on Redmi Note 7 Pro codenamed ‘Violet’.

The Android 11 custom ROM for Redmi Note 7 Pro is a port of Android 11 Developer Preview 4 released by Google earlier this month. So, it will be not as stable as Android 10 ROMs available for the device. Nevertheless, it is worth trying if you are into modding and stuff.
