AnTuTu: Dimensity 800 vs Dimensity 800 (overclocked version)

Earlier this week, we reported that MediaTek will have an event on May 7 where it is expected to announce new processors. One of the expected chipsets is a higher-clocked version of the Dimensity 800.

It turns out that an AnTuTu benchmark result of this higher clocked version already surfaced on the web. And it is compared against that of the standard version. The benchmark results were posted on Weibo by Digital Chat Station and he said they are from prototype devices.

[envira-gallery id=”320400″]

As you can see in the images above, the device powered by the overclocked Dimensity 800 (right) scored higher than the device powered by the standard Dimensity 800 in all areas, most especially in the CPU, UX, and GPU categories.

According to a tweet by Russian tech blog @Xiaomishka, the Dimensity 800 and Dimensity 800+ (overclocked version) will power two upcoming Redmi phones in China. The phones have model numbers M2004J7AC and M2004J7BC and are believed to be the Redmi Note 10 (Dimensity 800) and Redmi Note 10 Pro (Dimensity 800+).

The tweet reveals the Dimensity 800+ has its “large core” pushed to 2.6GHz which is a significant bump from the 2.0GHz clockspeed of the performance cores of the Dimensity 800.

We advise you to take the above with a grain of salt until more details surface. Nevertheless, there is no gainsaying that the overclocked Dimensity 800 will offer a significant improvement in performance over the Dimensity 800.

Updated [Official spec sheet]:MediaTek Helio G85 announced – nothing more than a name change

Update: MediaTek has released the official spec sheet and it confirms our original story that the difference between the Helio G80 and Helio G85 is a higher clocked GPU.

MediaTek’s Helio G-series line of smartphone chipsets has gotten a new member today. The new processor which is called the Helio G85 made its debut in the Redmi Note 9. So what features does this new gaming chipset bring?

MediaTek Helio G85

The Helio G85 processor arrives nearly three months after the Helio G80 was announced. The latter processor made its global debut in the Realme 6i smartphone.

Helio G85

For the 12nm Helio G85, MediaTek is sticking to a 2+6 core arrangement. So you have 2x Cortex-A75 cores clocked at 2.0GHz and 6x Cortex-A55 cores whose clockspeed is unknown. This is the same core arrangement and clockspeed as the Helio G80. So what is actually different?

The clockspeed of the GPU seems to be the only difference. Based on the official spec sheet of the Redmi Note 9, the Mali G52 MC2 of the Helio G85 is clocked at 1000MHz while the spec page for the Helio G80 says its GPU is clocked at 950MHz. So we have just an increase of 50MHz over that of the Helio G80. Pretty disappointing, right?

Helio G85

Helio G85

We reached out to MediaTek for a full spec sheet of the new chipset to see if there are more details but we haven’t gotten any response yet. If and when they do publicize a full spec sheet and we find more differences, we will let you know.

MediaTek Helio G85 MediaTek Helio G85

According to benchmark results displayed by Xiaomi during its product launch, the Helio G85 beats the Exynos 9611 and the Snapdragon 665 processor by no small margin.

Based on the above, the Helio G85 does bring a bump in performance compared to the Snapdragon 665 that powers the Redmi Note 8. However, there is no justification for why it exists when there is the Helio G80.

Xiaomi launches a smart Mobile Air-conditioner priced at ¥1599 (~$226)

In most homes, it is rare to find an air conditioning system in the kitchen. In winter, this may not pose any challenge but cooking during the summer will definitely be associated with sweating due to the ambient temperature. In this regard, Xiaomi Youpin has launched a third-party mobile air-conditioner. The product is manufactured by NEW WIDETECH, a Chinese start-up and adopts a 1,599 yuan (~$226) price tag.

Xiaomi mobile Air-conditioner

The new mobile air-conditioner is the same size as the Mi Air Purifier but has a universal caster at the bottom. Thus, it can easily be moved to the kitchen when cooking or any other part of the house. It is suitable for any place, such as apartments, office spaces, kitchens, security kiosks, and even outdoor activities.

The NEW WIDETECH Smart Mobile Air-conditioner features an applicable area of 11-17 square meters. The air-con doesn’t utilise a split unit design and as such, no outdoor unit is required. It supports three functions of air supply (adjustable double-speed wind speed), cooling and dehumidification, which not only meets the summer heat but also realizes the dehumidification during the rainy season.

The mobile air conditioner adopts a waterless tank design. It uses a DC water pumping motor to force the evaporation of condensed water without draining at all times, which solves the trouble of draining the machine. The machine also has some air purification functions. The built-in silver ion filter can remove the bacteria in the air including E. coli. It also effectively filters dust and other particles in the air, and make the blown wind more fresh and comfortable.

In addition, it has a built-in Wi-Fi function and can be paired to a smartphone via the MIJIA app. With the app, the settings of the air-conditioner can be adjusted from a smartphone. The machine can also be linked to the XiaoAI-enabled device to achieve voice control. It also has a dedicated remote control.

Roborock S6 MaxV Vacuum Cleaner Review: Embracing the Smart Life

Roborock S6 MaxV

The Roborock S6 MaxV vacuum cleaner recently became one of the most useful members of my smart home system. Actually, my point is that most intelligent household appliances are not as smart as companies claim. But in the case of a Robot vacuum cleaner, you will see tangible benefits in your life, you no longer have to mop or vacuum, which is why I am willing to pay a premium for a powerful vacuum cleaner. So, I have been keeping an eye on this segment. And the Roborock S6 MaxV turned out to be a great option for my need.

Roborock, specializing in the design and production of cutting-edge intelligent vacuum cleaner, introduced its latest cleaner product, the Roborock S6 MaxV this week. The Roborock S series is the most innovative lineup of Roborock products. And the S6 MaxV is Roborock’s most powerful robot vacuum as it comes with plenty of new technologies and hardware upgrades. Compared to the previous S-series models, it has stereo cameras and a LIDAR Sensor together for better obstacle avoidance and room detection; a better power motor but longer battery life; a larger 300ML water container providing maximum mopping area up to 250㎡.

Hardware

Inside of the Roborock S6 MaxV, a Qualcomm APQ8053 processor provides better AI calculation and processing power. Combined with the dual-camera system, the better chip is able to have more accurately & faster obstacle recognition and avoidance than a single camera. Working with the LIDAR sensor, the Roborock S6 MaxV is more capable of building an accurate map of an interior. In actual running, the map information could be scanned and uploaded to the phone App in half a minute. Thanks to the Qualcomm chip and the simplified App, interaction with the S6 MaxV was easier and far more fluent.

The Roborock has added an App guidebook inside the box. Users can find all details about the App in this book.

Stereo cameras

The most important upgrade in the new model is the stereo cameras. Thanks to the stereo cameras, users don’t have to stay with the cleaner, to monitor its work, and prevent it from bumping into obstacles. The stereo camera on the front captures detailed images at a max-speed of 30fps. It can spot obstacles as small as 2-inches wide and 1.1 inches tall, not to mention shoes or small toys. Another wonderful detail is that when you first launch the S6 MaxV, it would ask you on the App if you’re keeping pets. If yes, the S6 MaxV will turn on the Pet mode to avoid pet droppings.

The Roborock S6 MaxV is equipped with a 5200mAh battery, the same as the previous S6 model. But it is able to provide up to 180 minutes of cleaning, which is 30 minutes longer than the cleaning time of the S6 model. It’s enough to cover a cleaning area of 300㎡or a mopping area of 250㎡. However, I’m sure some of you have larger houses and the battery life might not be enough to finish the whole cleaning work on one charge.

According to past experience, most robot vacuum cleaners would automatically go back to the dock when 20% of low battery warning, then charge up to 80% and resume the cleaning. But on the S6 MaxV, the process has become smarter. It calculates how much power it needs to finish cleaning, and then charges up to the required power level. So compared to the most vacuum cleaners, the S6 MaxV is definitely one of the most efficient cleaners for a big house.

25% improvement in power

Other hardware upgrades like 25% better suction power (2500Pa) and larger water tank capacity (300ml) enable sweeping and mopping at the same time. You can also set it to just sweeping or just mopping mode. Using the official Roborock APP, users are able to customize schedules and various zones settings for the S6 MaxV. For example, users can schedule multi-tasks of mopping mode or just sweeping mode (suction power) for every room.

Roborock App

The App can display the multi-level maps scanned and stored by the S6 MaxV. It supports up to 4-floor plans and recognizes automatically which map the robot is on. So you can track all the cleaning routes of the robot and complete all the latest features provided:

No-Go Zones: Allow users to create a rectangle shape of the area or a barrier tape for keeping the robot off.
No-Mop Zones: Let the robot avoid mopping in a carpeted area or a customized area.
Room Cleaning: Order the robot to clean a specific room or two instead of the whole house.
Zoned Cleaning: Clean within a specific zone of an interior.
Pin n Go: Users can select a specific point on the map and send the robot to clean there.

Noise

Another problem that users complained about a robot cleaner is noise. But on the S6 MaxV, it provided 5 suction power modes for users to use it appropriately under different scenarios. In the silent mode, all of my family members were happy with its cleaning efforts and were able to accept the noise as well.

Carpet cleaning

Roborock S6 MaxV is also appropriate for carpet cleaning. Thanks to its 25% power improvement and the feature to identifies carpets, the Robot provided much better cleaning than most other robots on my carpet. When the S6 MaxV identified carpet, it boosts suction power to the MAX level to provide the most powerful cleaning.

Conclusion

We are glad to see that Roborock was able to combine the advanced hardware and the functional software on the new Roborock S6 MaxV.

The smart tech doesn’t come cheap as the price tag of $749 is quite steep. However, when you figure out how much time you lose during mopping and sweeping, you would agree with me. It’s definitely worth the money. It’s not necessary to buy the S6 MaxV, but if you are willing to embrace the smart life, the S6 MaxV won’t disappoint you.

The Roborock S6 MaxV is available via Roborock’s website and Amazon.

Report: Arogya Setu app to be pre-installed on new smartphones with non-skippable registration

Since there is no cure for the COVID-19 disease, the only way to keep ourselves protected is by following social distancing and washing hands. Additionally, governments can implement robust contact tracing systems to avoid more people getting infected by the virus. ‘Arogya Setu’ is an app built for this very reason for Indians. The application is yet to be a month old but the government is already planning to force new smartphone buyers to register.

The Arogya Setu app is available on both Android and iOS. However, there are still a vast majority of Indians with feature phones. The country is still looking into ways to enable contact tracing for those set of citizens.

Arogya Setu Contact Tracing App India

Before that, the Indian government is planning to force smartphone makers to pre-install the app on their devices. Additionally, it is planning to appoint nodal agencies that will be working together with smartphone companies to implement the setup process of new phones with a non-skippable registration process for Arogya Setu app.

However, it is not known how and when it will be carried out. Because India is yet under lockdown and smartphone manufacturing facilities are still shut down. If the plan gets formalized, we can expect the process to begin as soon as the facilities reopen.

‘Arogya Setu’ has had a remarkable positive response ever since its release. It is reported to have crossed 7.5 crores (75 million) downloads, out of which, 5 crores+ (50 million) alone is from the Google Play Store. The app uses location and Bluetooth data to track the people affected by the coronavirus

It has a record of documented COVID-19 patients as well as location history of registered users. By using the app, healthy individuals can avoid crossing paths with the affected persons. It also has sections to self-assess symptoms, issue e-Pass, monitor the status of cases, and more.

The company recently released audio products in its home country, Japan, which include the popular WH-1000XM3 over-ear headphones, WF-XB700, and WI-SP510 wireless earphones. However, Sony isn’t just stopping there as it is working on launching even more wireless earphones, with athletes and helmet wearers in mind this time.

Sony

Back in 2019, Sony had filed for design patents with the Japanese patent agency JPO for new wireless earphones. This patent was finally published last month and features 9 black and white images, alongside one colored render of the new hearables. Unfortunately, the finer details regarding the product are currently unknown as it is a design patent. However, the company did reveal a short description of it.

Looking at the images, it is clear that the earphones are wireless and are designed for and other physical activities in mind. Notably, the description revealed that the earphones can be used under a helmet. This is achieved by having the earpiece stay inside the helmet while the region with the controls can be positioned outside of it. Since the design follows a hooked shape, it can go over an ear to equally distribute weight and not feel too heavy on any one side.

A microphone sits at the top of the control panel, which should make it easier to pick up calls and help in the user being more audible to the other party. The control “pads” might also have touch controls through which one can lower or raise the volume, but that is just speculation at this point. The bean design is quite unique and we would like to see what features, like noise cancelation, Sony manages to pack in these wireless earphones.

Honor V30 Pro Scores only 59 points in DxOMark Audio but Excellent in Recording

Honor V30 Pro launched in November 2019 gets tested by DxOMark Audio team. Sadly, the phone only scores 59 points, which is just a single point more than the Realme X2 Pro. As a result, the handset ranks 15th, which is a far cry from the top 10.

Being a phone with a single speaker system, Honor V30 Pro performs terribly in spatial. The wideness in playback is non-existent as well as balance and localizability are impaired since the sound comes from a single side.

Honor V30 Pro DxOMark Audio

The timbre performance is decent but the lack of bass is clearly felt, which in turn affects the overall timbre and dynamics of the playback audio.  But clear and precise high-ends result in good attack.

Once again, volume performance is decent with good consistency and natural volume steps. However, excessive compression affects audio content at maximum volume levels as well as leads to distortion by producing hissing noises.

As for recording, the phone performs much better than its playback. The recording frequency is very good and consistent with exceptional bass extension. The dynamics are well-preserved due to great SNR (signal-to-noise ratio).

The spatial performance is remarkable with excellent localizability and wideness. Recorded loudness is also superb with very few artifacts, even in loud environments. Background rendering is great as well, thanks to a natural tonal balance and all the above-mentioned recording qualities.

Overall, the Honor V30 Pro is a good phone for recording but an average handset for playback.

Microsoft Surface Headphones 2 spotted on SIG certification, features Qualcomm AptX Support

Microsoft is apparently working on a new Surface Headphones, as per the discovery on the Bluetooth SIG certification website. The company had previously launched its Microsoft Surface Headphones back in 2018, and the ones found on the website could be its upcoming successor.

Microsoft

The new hearables in question could likely be the Microsoft Surface Headphones 2. The certification carried the model number 1919 and have appeared with some rather interesting details as well. The headphones will feature Bluetooth 5.0, which is an upgrade over the last generation that used Bluetooth 4.2. Furthermore, the listing also reveals that the Surface Headphones 2 will also have support for Qualcomm’s AptX, another feature that was skipped in the predecessor.

According to the SIG certification, the new pair of Bluetooth headphones will feature improved sound quality, partly thanks to AptX, and also have a longer battery life. The official website lists 20 hours of battery life on a single full charge, which is a slight improvement over 18 hours on the original Surface Headphones with Active Noice Cancelation being turned off. Notably, with the added ANC system, battery life lasted about 15 hours.

Microsoft Surface Headphones

Another unique aspect regarding the original Microsoft Surface was its rotating dial that allowed users to turn the levels of the ANC up and down depending on the direction the dial was twisted. The newer generation might adopt a similar feature since it was a highly praised design at the time. However, there is no way of confirming it right now. While the launch may be a while away, the Microsoft Surface Headphones 2 could be announced as soon as next month, during the Build 2020 event. So stay tuned.

Amazon reportedly bought Thermal Cameras made by Blacklisted Chinese company

Amidst growing concerns from many workers over the Coronavirus pandemic, Amazon had to employ various precautionary measures to ensure the safety of its employees. For this, the e-retailing giant started providing face masks and conduct regular temperature checks through thermal cameras. However, it seems that Amazon has bought cameras from a Chinese company that was previously blacklisted by the US government.

Amazon

According to a Reuters report, Amazon has spent about 10 million US Dollars for 1,500 thermal cameras. Although, it seems that the company Amazon has bought them from was previously implicated to be involved with China’s efforts to detain and harass Uighurs and Muslim minorities. The Chinese company, Zhejiang Dahua Technology, has declined any such allegation but it was one of the 28 companies that had faced the trade ban from the US Commerce Department back in October 2019.

Zhejiang Dahua Technology was placed on the “Entity List” similar to Huawei. For those unaware, it is essentially the blacklisting of a company that is deemed to be a threat to the US. These companies face pressure from the US and have their operations hindered as they cannot buy or sell products/services to American based companies.

Apparently, the purchase from Amazon is legal since the “rules control the US Government contract awards and exports to blacklisted firms.” However, they do not stop sales to the private sector. Furthermore, Amazon did not confirm the purchase, rather, it was using thermal cameras from “multiple’ sources and not limited to just Dahua. This includes Infrared Cameras Inc and Flir, with about 500 cameras being used in the US. Interestingly, the Dahua made cameras are capable of facial recognition to match temperature data later on, but Amazon insists on not using this technology in their cameras.

TikTok surpasses 2 billion downloads, Coronavirus pandemic helps surge user base

TikTok, the extremely popular social media app, has surpassed 2 billion downloads across iOS and Android, according to a report from Sensor Tower. Back in late 2019, the app crossed 1.5 billion downloads and is currently seeing the ‘best quarter for any app ever’ in 2020.

TikTok

One of the supplementing reasons for its growth after its initial viral success is the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. While people across many nations are confined in their homes, social media apps have been witnessing a swelling user base. However, none brought in numbers as high as TikTok, which reportedly saw 315 million downloads during just the first quarter of 2020.

This is a new quarterly record for a smartphone application, with massive engagements and revenue being brought in as well. The 2 billion downloads were from Android and iOS, but the majority of its lifetime revenue was primarily generated by the latter platform. Apple’s iOS raked in 435.3 million US Dollars to date, while Android only brought in 21.4 million US Dollars for ByteDance (the parent company behind TikTok).

In terms of regional popularity, China took the top spot for a revenue source for the social media app, which was followed by the United States. Sensor Tower report revealed that Chinese people spent 331 million US Dollars in the app (accounting for 72.3 percent of the total revenue) while people from the US spent 86.5 million US Dollars (about 19 percent). This stands to showcase the apps immense popularity and consistent growth in the industry, which may keep its competitors on their toes.
